If you know me, then you know that I have an extremely dark sense of humor and I love stand up comedy. As a language learner, being able to understand jokes and cultural humor is a sign that you've reached a relatively advanced level because stand up comedy is heavily influenced by culture. So if you can understand not only the words being said, but also the reason that people find it funny, then you've got a pretty good understanding of both the language and the culture. So this episode is for all of my stand up comedy lovers who want to put their English to the test and get more familiar with American culture. This list of comedians is in no particular order, by the way. This week spotlights Loretta Lynn's 1975 crossover hit, “The Pill,” one of the most controversial country singles of all time. To discuss Loretta, birth control, and the normalizing of sexual health education, Danny and Tyler are joined by the brilliant and hilarious Alex Kumin (@alexkumin, Comedy Central, Comedians You Should Know). Everyone from Owen Bradley to Reba McEntire to Jack White says that Loretta Lynn is one of the smartest country songwriters of all time, and they'd all agree she's a fearless badass too. According to Tyler Mahan Coe, Loretta Lynn had more songs banned from radio than all male country artists in the 20th century combined. What gets a female vocalist banned from country music radio? What makes a woman "radical" within a male-dominated industry? Is wanting birth control even controversial? Give this week's episode a listen, where we answer those questions.New to Loretta? Mike began his comedy career at the age of six with clowning classes at the local JCC. He's been delighting crowds with his intoxicating brand of wild-eyed humor ever since. Mike’s irreverent bar-stool philosophy careens from topic to topic like a runaway freight train with some dubious couplings. Audiences have described the experience as “spontaneous,” “joyful’ and “slightly terrifying.” Mike cut his teeth in Chicago (not as painful as it sounds), where he was a regular at Zanies Comedy Club, The Laugh Factory and Comedy Bar Chicago. He co-founded the popular showcase, Comedians You Should Know, which he brought to New York City in 2016. It has since become the weekly go-to spot to see comedy legends and up-and-comers rock the same mic. Internationally, Mike has offended nostrils in Montreal as a "New Face" of the 2013 Just For Laughs, and he won The Montreux Comedy Festival competition in Switzerland. He’s been featured on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Comedy Central, and HBO’s The Deuce. Look for his debut album, LEBO, in early 2019 on Stand Up Records.
Comedian David Drake talks taking on a live audience and why a comedian shouldn't turn on them, showcasing "Comedians You Should Know", digging yourself out of a hole, and a favorite joke about Halloween. Plus, accents without offense, unwanted music on the subway, nerd camp and "mermaiding", living in the moment, chocolate orange red wine, and improvised stories that must include three words.
