pWotD Episode 2598: Jerry West Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 499,944 views on Wednesday, 12 June 2024 our article of the day is Jerry West.Jerome Alan West (May 28, 1938 – June 12, 2024) was an American basketball executive and player. He played professionally for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). His nicknames included "the Logo", in reference to his silhouette being the basis for the NBA logo; "Mr. Clutch", for his ability to make a big play in a key situation such as his famous buzzer-beating 60-foot shot that tied Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks; "Mr. Outside", in reference to his perimeter play with the Los Angeles Lakers and "Zeke from Cabin Creek" for the creek near his birthplace of Chelyan, West Virginia. West played the small forward position early in his career: he was a standout at East Bank High School and at West Virginia University, where he led the Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA championship game. He earned the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player honor despite the loss in the championship. He then embarked on a 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers and was the co-captain of the 1960 U. S. Olympic gold medal team, a squad that was inducted as a unit into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2024, he will be inducted to the Hall of Fame as a contributor to the sport as an executive and consultant.West's NBA career was highly successful. Playing the guard position, he was voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams, was elected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times and was chosen as the All-Star MVP in 1972, the same year that he won the only title of his career. West holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series with 46.3. He was also a member of the first five NBA All-Defensive Teams (one second, followed by four firsts), which were introduced when he was 32 years old. Having played in nine NBA Finals, he is also the only player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP despite being on the losing team (1969). In 1980, West was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and named to the NBA 35th Anniversary Team. West was named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996, and to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.After his playing career ended, West took over as head coach of the Lakers for three years. He led Los Angeles into the playoffs each year and earned a Western Conference finals berth once. Working as a player-scout for three years, West was named general manager of the Lakers before the 1982–83 NBA season. Under his reign, Los Angeles won six championship rings. In 2002, West became general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies and helped the franchise win their first-ever playoff berths. For his contributions, West won the NBA Executive of the Year Award twice: once as a Lakers manager (1995) and then as a Grizzlies manager (2004). West's son, Jonnie, also played college basketball for West Virginia. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:57 UTC on Thursday, 13 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Jerry West on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Amy Neural.
We may be a few weeks away from the offseason, but that isn't stopping the offseason reports from coming in. An NBA Executive confirms that several teams are watching the Utah Jazz and his situation with Utah. He named several teams including the New York Knicks. NY being interested is an All-Star the caliber of Markkanen is no surprise. In terms of skill set, fit, age timeline and more, he would be a great fit on this team. Unfortunately, when dealing with Danny Ainge in Utah, the cost of making such a trade will be astronomical. 0:00 ... Hello and Welcome 0:26 ... Bet OnLine Live commercial read 1:08 ... Bruce starts out by giving credit to the "48 Minutes" crew for setting in motion several moves that reshaped three NBA franchises: the Bucks, Celtics, and Blazers. 1:46 ... Bruce wanted Holiday on the Celtics from the moment he was traded by the Bucks to Portland. Holiday teams with Derrick White to give Boston an incredible defensive duo on the perimeter. 2:57 ... Ross asks World B to compare Holiday to the departed Marcus Smart and World B feels Jrue is a significant upgrade for Boston at that position. 4:26 ... Bruce feels the addition of Holiday is a "win now" move for Boston. He feels that White and Holiday will be among the league leaders in forcing turnovers and that opposing teams will have a lot of trouble getting into the paint against the Celtics. 5:50 ... World B explains that Boston was already a top two defensive team (last season) and now the Celtics and Bucks are clearly the two best teams in the east and possibly the two best teams in the entire league. 7:16 ... Ross asks Bruce about Boston's front court depth and Bruce feels they need one more big on the roster to play behind Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford. Among the possibilities Bruce mentions are Andre Drummond of the Bulls and three available free agent bigs. 9:15 ... Bruce cites some other depth issues for the Celtics 9:58 ... World B points out that Porzingis played well last season for the Wizards when paired with fellow big Daniel Gafford and we should not be surprised if Porzingis and Horford play significant minutes together at times. 11:13 ... Moving to Milwaukee's situation, Ross wonders if the Bucks will regret freeing up Holiday to join Boston. World B feels that the Bucks would not do anything differently in dealing Holiday to get Damian Lillard. 12:59 ... Bruce feels the Lillard acquisition was essential for the Bucks since they often struggled offensively late in games and Dame solves many of those problems. 13:19 ... Bruce points out that Lillard joining Giannis has echoes of Clyde Drexler joining Hakeem Olajuwon in Houston in 1995 and helping "The Dream" win his second NBA title. Bruce also points out that in a Bucks/Celtics playoff series, Holiday and Lillard will be a fascinating individual matchup as they'd likely guard each other. 14:39 ... Ross points out that the Bucks acquired Cameron Payne on Sunday as their backup point guard and all the guys agreed it was an excellent move. 17:26 ... The guys pay tribute to the Portland Trailblazers general manager Joe Cronin for his off-season moves and how he turned what looked like a situation where Lillard might have to be traded for "pennies on the dollar" into a major haul of talent and future assets. Bruce feels he is the early favorite for next season's NBA Executive of the Year. 19:49 ... World B gives Cronin a grade of A+ for his Lillard dealings. 21:13 ... Ross feels that Cronin's great achievement might be if Scoot Henderson wins Rookie of the year. 22:11 ... Ross leads a discussion on whether the Blazers might use Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams III in a "Twin Towers" setup and if so, who would play the 4 and who would play the 5. 26:03 ... Ross leads a discussion on the "lost" off-season of the Miami Heat. Bruce cites the aging players on Miami but predicts that they'll continue to develop undervalued players on their roster with some surprise contributors emerging. Bruce also thinks Heat GM Andy Elisburg should call Cronin and see if Brogdon is available in a trade because he'd be an upgrade at point over "soon to be 38 year old Kyle Lowry." 28:30 ... Ross asks World B how he feels (as a Knicks fan) about Miami's off-season difficulties. 29:56 ... Ross is curious as to what the Heat will be able to do to upgrade the team as the season rolls on. 30:39 ... Ross bye until next time TRT 30:57

The former CEO of the parent company that owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils has agreed to take the same position for London-based Merlin Entertainments. Scott O'Neil will be responsible for overseeing the business operations and global growth for Merlin Entertainments across its 147 attractions in 24 countries. O'Neil's appointment, effective Nov. 15, comes following outgoing CEO Nick Varney's decision to retire after 23 years. Merlin's attractions include 10 Legoland Resort Theme Parks and hotels, six Resort Theme Parks including Alton Towers, Heide Park and Gardaland, as well as Sea Life aquariums, Madame Tussauds, Peppa Pig World of Play, the Lastminute.com London Eye and Sydney Tower Eye. Merlin is continuing to expand, with three Legoland Resorts in China under development and further openings planned across the US and Asia. The 52-year-old O'Neil resigned in June 2021 from Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment after he helped lead scores of projects under the HBSE banner, such as the Grammy Museum at the Prudential Center and the creation of a state-of-the-art Sixers complex, both in New Jersey. O'Neil, a Villanova graduate, also previously led Madison Square Garden Sports. He oversaw the business operations of the Knicks, New York Rangers, and New York Liberty. “My experience in the NBA, NFL and NHL in building teams, my passion for guest experience, cultivating, reviving and building brands, and driving growth in a business that is similar and consumer focused seemed like a natural next step,” O'Neil said. Though it's far from a household name, Merlin has become the undisputed, second-largest visitor attractions operator on the planet based on attendance. Disney has a comfortable lead in the No. 1 spot. “Scott has significant experience in the entertainment industry, a proven track-record of delivering business transformation, and the vision and ambition to lead Merlin through the next exciting stages of its global development,” said Roland Hernandez, chair of Merlin Entertainments. “The board has every confidence in him, and we look forward to working closely together over the coming years.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Mitch Kupchak grew up in a different America with parents whose upbringing in the Great Depression instilled a strong work ethic but left little time for sports. But as Mitch grew into his 6-foot-10 frame, it soon became apparent that he was destined for something special on the hardwood. As his skills caught up with his size, several college coaches came calling, and it was a simple, honest pitch from Dean Smith that convinced the young man to attend the University of North Carolina. Once at Chapel Hill, Mitch was molded into the man he became by a combination of Smith's leadership and his own diligence. This earned him a berth on the gold medal winning Team USA squad in the 1976 Montreal Olympics and a roster spot for the Washington Bullets, where he won the NBA championship with Hall of Famers Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes. Mitch battled through several serious knee injuries to win two more titles with the Showtime Lakers, and then undertook an apprenticeship under Jerry West, who prepared him for life in the front office. Kupchak eventually took over the Lakers GM role from West, winning two more championships with the Kobe Bryant-Pau Gasol team. He is now the President of Basketball Operations and VP of the Charlotte Hornets. In this episode, Mitch shares: How his upbringing built a firm foundation for successWhat Dean Smith taught him about leading a gold medal lifeWhy his Bullets teammate Ernie Grunfeld became his best friendHow Jerry West prepared him to be an NBA GMWhat he remembers from watching a 17-year-old Kobe Bryant work out for the Lakers
