It's been a while since we checked in with our friend Joe Desmond, an N- Scale modeler with a passion for the hobby, Conrail and connecting with other hobbyists through social media. There's a great discussion about the pros and cons of spending valuable modeling time making YouTube videos versus working on the layout. Joe has for some years now publicized his Central Jersey Conrail layout on TikTok and other social media avenues. There's some good discussion on why the layout isn't finished yet, life's curveballs and never sacrificing quality for speed or getting the layout finished, as well as a variety of other topics. It's a great podcast and we're sure you'll enjoy!!

Former Dauphin County Chief Detective Thomas Brennan's phone rings between 3 am and 4 am from a responding officer requesting assistance on a crime scene. When the detective arrives, he notices a car pulled close to a ditch. Brennen, who received training at the FBI Behavioral Science Unit during his tenure with the state police, knew immediately what he was dealing with when he arrived at the Conrail crime scene. After Brennan asks the officer for details, the officer explains that a Conrail train security guard had stumbled onto a man attacking a woman. The man was startled and he ran off. Thankfully the victim was injured but alive so he called for police and waited with her until help arrived.  Detective Brennan noted that the vehicle's trunk was open and inside was what many would call a “kit” such as rope, and duct tape, as in things to help someone kill or at least bind another person. Outside the car on the ground were plastic mats, seemingly to cover the ground inside the ditch. It was now clear to Brennan that this man had planned to kill his victim, put her in that ditch, and drive away. What was also clear to the detective was that this was not this man's first time killing someone, he had done it before and he knew what he was doing. Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast as we discuss ‘Steelton Serial Killer: Joe Miller.'As always, the listener discretion is by our bestie Edward @octoberpodVHSJust like our music is by our bestie Nico @theinkypawprintThis episode is sponsored by the amazing sleepcreme.comIf you don't experience better sleep, they will refund your money. Is it time to nationalize the railroads?

The train derailment disaster in East Palestine, Ohio catapulted the degraded condition of the US's freight rail network into national consciousness. But workers have been sounding the alarm for years. Long hours, short staffs, poor sick leave, and dangerously extended trains have raised the risks inherent in railroad operations for workers and the public in order to fatten the profit margins of corporate rail carriers. While the Department of Transportation has called for stricter regulation in the wake of East Palestine and other recent disasters, rank-and-file workers say it's not enough. The problem is not simply one of inadequate regulation, but the power of private, profit-driven interests to shape what is ultimately public infrastructure. Thus comes the call to nationalize the railroads. But how might this be accomplished, and how effectively can it solve the problems plaguing the rail system today? Journalist and professor Kari Lyderson and former Railroad Workers United General Secretary Ron Kaminkow join TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez to discuss current issues in the US rail system, and the potential solutions nationalization could offer.Kari Lyderson is a Chicago-based journalist, author and assistant professor at Northwestern University, where she leads the investigative specialization at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications. She is the author of numerous books, including Mayor 1%: Rahm Emanuel and the Rise of Chicago's 99% and Closing the Cloud Factories: Lessons from the Fight to Shut Down Chicago's Coal Plants. Until recently, Ron Kaminow served as General Secretary of Railroad Workers United. Prior to hiring out as a brakeman with Conrail in 1996, he served as President of AFSCME Local 634 in Madison, Wisconsin. In 2005, Kaminkow helped to found Railroad Operating Crafts United (ROCU), an RWU predecessor. In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D discusses the Rail Workers Union recent call for nationalization of all rail lines in the US, Mexico, and Canada.Jumping in to the video, Double D reads excerpts from an article published by "People's World" which outlines some of the recent labor struggle between RWU and the big rail bosses, as well as highlighting their recent call for nationalization of all rail lines in the United States.Double D shows how the Steering Committee of the RWU sees nationalization as a fight not just for economic justice but for democracy. Double D contrasts this perspective with the on going political theater of Democrats claiming that "American democracy is under siege" by right wing political forces. He agreeing with that reality, Double D points out that both the political class and the media class leave any and all notion of economic democracy out of this discussion. He asserts that capitalism and democracy are not only not synonymous, they are in fact contrary to one another, and that so long as social, economic, and political life is dominated by corporations, American democracy will remain on life support.Double D examines the authoritarian structure of capitalism, outlining the concept of the "dictatorship of capital" and analyzes how the corporation is in its essence an authoritarian structure. Relating this to the rail road, he shows how big rail bosses have ousted 29% of the rail road work force over the last eight years, and have continued to boast record profits straight through the Great Recession and even the pandemic.Ruminating on this reality, Double D considers the madness of having the profit motive as the driving ideological force within your society. He points out how rail lines have begun looking at profit margin as the primary definition of the success of the rail road. He asks what is the purpose of a railroad? To make money? Or to transport human beings and freight? He goes on to examine how the profit motive has warped every aspect of American society, citing food production, entertainment and the arts, and even national security and foreign policy.Analyzing some history of the rail lines, Double D explains how nationalization is nothing new in US history. He outlines how the government took several bankrupt or defunct rail lines, and merged them into one federally owned company known as "Conrail" back in 1976. He shows however, that while the government was able to return the rail lines to profitability, the federal assets were sold off to two rail giants, who then split up the network, and discontinued many of the smaller branches. He goes on to examine the 1918 Railroad Control Act, through which the US government seized control of all rail lines to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of military equipment and personnel during the First World War. He then shows how a majority of rail workers voted to maintain nationalization as the rail roads began to move back into private hands. Double D asks how we could possibly living in a democracy, when a majority of workers who do all of the work vote a certain way, yet the ownership class still remains in control of one of the most essential parts of our national infrastructure.youtube.com/entitledmillennialspaypal.me/entitledmillennialspatreon.com/entitledmillennials

Even if the story has faded from the headlines, the struggles railroad workers are facing have not gone away in the slightest, and workers and their families have reported that BNSF's “Hi-Viz” policy has been a disaster for them and for the railroad industry. This is the first episode of Living with Steam EXTRA, where between episodes of the main podcast, I'll share railroad recordings made by folks other than John Prophet. On a cold, early evening in February 1993, I was inside Central Terminal in Buffalo, NY having a "look-around" with several friends. While everyone was off exploring the tower section, I wandered up to the 10th floor because I wanted to attempt to make a recording of what the outside of the facility sounded like. The mainline of the NYC (then Conrail) was obviously several hundred feet in front, and the tracks coming off the Belt Line (heading east) were right below the window I was looking out from. I lowered microphones out from two windows facing the tracks and connected them to a portable cassette deck I had brought with me. For 16 minutes, I sat in the window watching everything unfold outside the Terminal while the tape recorder captured it all... including some of my friends walking around the floor. Quiet, please! This may not be a recording of steam engines, but the recording might give you a good representation of what it may have sounded like to work at Central Terminal with the continuous and often very busy rail activity going on outside.

Understanding Conrail with Brian Gorton Brian Gorton and Joe Lynch discuss understanding Conrail. Brian is the President & Chief Operating Officer of Conrail Shared Assets, which serves as a contract local carrier and switching company for its owners, CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. About Brian Gorton Brian E. Gorton joined Conrail in 1987 as a conductor. He advanced to the position of Assistant Terminal Superintendent before departing Conrail prior to the CSXT and Norfolk Southern acquisition of Conrail in 1998. After his departure from Conrail, he worked at the Union Pacific Railroad where he held various positions in the Transportation Department including General Manager of UP's Houston and Gulf Coast Service Units. On April 19, 2021, Brian rejoined Conrail and was appointed President & Chief Operating Officer of Conrail Shared Assets headquartered in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, bringing with him over 30 years of railroad experience and expertise. About Conrail  Conrail is an American railroad company. It operates three networks—the North Jersey, South Jersey/Philadelphia, and Detroit Shared Assets Areas, where it serves as a contract local carrier and switching company for its owners, CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. Customers located along Conrail's lines have access to the national rail network through either railway. As a local rail service provider, it's Conrail's job to make sure that customers' freight shipments are safely and efficiently moved between their rail sidings and the long-distance freight trains operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern. CSX and Norfolk Southern handle all commercial matters for customers. However, Conrail plays a critical role in serving shippers and receivers as a service provider for our owners. Key Takeaways: Understanding Conrail Brian Gorton is the President & Chief Operating Officer of Conrail Shared Assets, which serves as a contract local carrier and switching company for its owners, CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. In the podcast interview, Brian explains Conrail's capabilities, service area, history, operations, and the advantages that rail brings to high-volume shippers. In the spring of 1997, Norfolk Southern Corporation (NS) and CSX Corporation (CSX) agreed to acquire Conrail through a joint stock purchase. CSX and NS split most of the Company's assets between them. The approved merger plan restructured Conrail into a Switching and Terminal Railroad operating about 1,200 miles of track in three regional areas. On June 1, 1999, Conrail began operating as a Switching and Terminal Railroad for its owners, NS and CSX, in the three geographical areas of Northern New Jersey, Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia, and Detroit, Michigan. In 2007, it expanded its operations from Northern New Jersey to Staten Island, New York. Advantages of rail transport: Cost effective. Shippers often save money by switching from truck to rail. Sustainability. Rail transport is more environmentally friendly and produces less greenhouse gas emissions than over the road trucking. Great option for high-volume shippers. A double-stacked train can move more freight than hundreds of trucks. Reliability. Trains run on a track and on a schedule, so traffic and weather are seldom an issue. Access to capacity. Many shippers use rail as an alternative to the driver and truck constrained over the road market. Intermodal shipping which utilizes rail transport is often the most efficient transportation mode for shippers, particularly high-volume shippers. Philadelphia: A Railroad History describes the remarkable development of the railroad industry in Philadelphia and the intense competition that pitted the Pennsylvania Railroad against the Reading Railroad, and those two titans against the formidable Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to dominate the regional market. The book details the impact of the rail industry on four local firms—Baldwin Locomotive, the Cramp Shipyard, Midvale Steel and the Budd Company—and on the Philadelphia waterfront and its port. And it concludes with speculation on the impact, challenges and opportunities presented by Conrail’s acquisition by CSX and Norfolk Southern. Philadelphia: A Railroad History also highlights the key roles of the city’s industrial giants during this colorful era, including Steven Girard, Matthias Baldwin, William Sellers, Franklin Gowen, John W. Garrett, George Roberts and Edward G. Budd. Edward Duffy is a graduate of La Salle and Temple Universities. He has worked for Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce, its Planning Commission, its Port Corporation, and the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation. Edward Duffy’s interest in railroads dates from his role as liaison between the City of Philadelphia and various rail reorganization agencies in the early 1970s that resulted in the creation of Conrail in 1976.

Whether you had to find a mirror to see yours or you could just look down and not miss it, we've all had first encounters with our bits, you know, our genitals. In a culture that espouses a specific body ideal, we can't escape wondering if even our most private parts hold up by comparison. Bodies are amazing because of diversity not despite it. In this episode, Cooper, Ginger, Dylan and Katie Mack discuss how body positivity wins the day. To SheVibe: Thank you! Your magazine cover is … without too much hyperbole… possibly the greatest thing that has ever happened. It’s amazing and we will show our appreciation at every opportunity. We dedicate this episode to you. We discuss a couple email responses to the following letters (warning: politics ahead): Cooper... Cooper... Cooper... I'm disappointed. I listen to your podcast regularly and am a fan. But as a Kinkster/swinger/conservative I have to say I was saddened by your recent spewing of vitriol towards anyone who doesn't believe as you believe. For background.... I am a straight, polyamorous, loving dominant male. I was raised with 4 sisters by parents that instilled common courtesy and respect. From the day I started studying about alternative lifestyles, I was repeatedly reminded that "My kink is not your kink". I understood that as a clear directive to not be derisive towards another's proclivities. As long as it was safe sane and consensual, more power to them. I may not know all the intricacies of their dynamic and it wasn't my job to pass judgement. I had hoped for the same kind of inclusion and acceptance from your podcast. Your dismissive attitude towards Christians and republicans was quite disconcerting. Your right to be an Atheist does not preclude another from believing in the "fairy tales" they hold dear. Your right to vote based on a woman's choice of what to do with their body does not preclude another from believing that bigger government will NOT ensure the rights of the individual are protected and/or provided for. With the history of Conrail, the Postal Service and Veterans Hospitals as examples, I'm more convinced than ever that the answer lies in the community rather than a larger ineffective centralized governments control. I'm sure you don't want to hear my political leanings any more than I want to hear about your epic prostate orgasm. That being said, I would never denigrate you for your kink or political affiliations. And to Dylan: Just finished LotSS 220, and I wanted to write in with a comment on Dylan's suggestion for a family-friendly sexy vacation destination. While he's anxiously waiting for Disney Cruise Lines to launch their Multi-Tier Mascot Mediterranean Fuckboat, his suggestion of a build-your-own vacation is workable, with one caveat; expecting a gathering of children to make it through the night without finding -something- they think they need an adult for, especially when it's super important that they stay away, is utter folly, no matter how much you pay the kids who are ostensibly in charge. But this is a problem that can be solved by logistics. If you know you have N couples with children who would be up for a sexy vacation (I am assuming you are on the board of the Homeowners Association to have access to that sort of info) you book your hotel rooms for at least N nights. Each couple then volunteers to watch the kids during one evening while the rest of the party congregates at a room at an entirely different hotel for sexy times. That way, every adult gets at least N-1 opportunities to participate, the kids get N awesome sleepover-like parties, and nobody has to leave their kids under the care of someone they don't trust enough to show their junk to. Remember, it takes a village to raise an orgy.

We have renamed our podcast to match the new branding of our blog. “Lubetkin on Communications” better captures the goal of our blog and podcast series, which is to provide a forum for discussion of important communications and public relations issues with newsmakers in the field. But in this episode, we depart from our coverage of public relations to chat with an old friend, David Kwechansky of Toronto, about the most famous electric locomotive in railroading history, the GG-1. David commissioned Grif Teller, the Pennsylvania Railroad's legendary calendar artist, to paint the image above for David's personal collection. Then he got a bright idea. Wouldn't it be cool to ask NJ Transit for a ride on that exact GG-1 locomotive? I was doing public relations for Conrail. Conrail was the contract operator of commuter rail service for NJ Transit in New Jersey when I was assigned to make the arrangements for David's engine ride. David's journey to New Jersey to ride GG-1 #4884 and pick up his painting from Grif Teller's Little Falls, NJ, studio were the subject of an extensive article in Trains Magazine in December 1981.   Three years later, “PodWife” Judy and I got to ride in the cab of GG-1 #4877 when NJ Transit sponsored a special railfan excursion to celebrate the retirement of the last GG-1 from regular rail service. There were several railfan rides on October 29, 1983, but Judy and I were lucky enough to be in the cab on the very last run of the day…and I had a microcassette recorder with me to capture some of the sounds – decades before podcasting became available.   Listen to the podcast here:   Download the podcast program here (Two-channel mono MP3 file, 54.3 mb, duration 00:43:22.)   Subscribe to the RSS feed for the “Lubetkin on Communications” podcast series.
