Man has it within his power to control his destiny to a great extent. He may shape and select the events of his life in about ninety percent of the cases and predetermine what his future shall be. The instrument through which he does this is the power of his mind. There are actually five mental agents which you may use to control your destiny. But first, before we study these thoroughly, let us define what we mean by the word Destiny. The dictionary defines destiny as: "The inevitable succession of events. One's fortune, or fate." You may not be able to choose your parents, or the shape and size of your body, the color of your hair or eyes, but these are not destiny. No matter with what limitations you were born, you can do something with your mind to determine the inevitable succession of events, and thus shape your fortune or fate.

Can you think of a time in your life when money played a factor in an important decision you made? Or maybe you couldn't make the right decision because you did have the money to do so. My mom got pregnant in high school with my older brother and had to quickly get married because my dad's family was Catholic and lived in a small town in Kansas where having a baby out of wedlock was unheard of at the time. My mom was an amazing mom who raised three kids and sacrificed all of her dreams to be a mom. She always says being a mom is all she ever wanted to do but before she turned 40, my dad had an affair and left her. She had no high school degree, she had only gotten her GED but never worked a day in her life and she found herself a single mom of three kids needing to get a job. She stayed in that marriage longer than she needed to because of money. What would she do? Who would hire a single mom with no college degree or work experience? I saw money dictate her decisions. I was in 7th grade and vowed right then and there I would never rely on anyone for money. I would be self sufficient and if I needed to pack up my kids and move to have a better life, I would do it.    I read a quote the other day that hit home for me and reminded me of that story. “Money or the lack thereof will put you at the mercy of someone else.” There is not a more true statement. People have a deep intuition about what has been called the “nature–nurture question.” Some aspects of our behavior feel as though they originate in our genetic makeup, while others feel like the result of our upbringing or our own hard work. The scientific field of behavior genetics attempts to study these differences empirically, either by examining similarities among family members with different degrees of genetic relatedness, or, more recently, by studying differences in the DNA of people with different behavioural traits. The scientific methods that have been developed are ingenious, but often inconclusive. Many of the difficulties encountered in the empirical science of behaviour genetics turn out to be conceptual, and our intuitions about nature and nurture get more complicated the harder we think about them. In the end, it is an oversimplification to ask how “genetic” some particular behavior is. Genes and environments always combine to produce behavior, and the real science is in the discovery of how they combine for a given behavior.
