Today's podcast takes up Joe Biden's COVID speech and plans and asks how we are to understand a president who says you have nothing to fear if you're vaccinated but he's going to protect you from the unvaccinated. And we discuss the enduring impact of 9/11. Give a listen.
On Thursday, President Joe Biden was unsparing about the burdens that the unvaccinated have thrust onto the rest of us: thousands more dead, overflowing hospitals, a rebounding economy showing signs of retreat. Pandemic politics, as Biden called it, are not simple. But eight months into the crisis, any new set of rules offered by the president raises an obvious question: Why didn't he do this already? The White House calls it a 6-point plan, but there were two big new things that Biden announced: — Vaccinations: Biden is finally leveraging the unilateral power of the federal government to expand vax mandates to some 100 million Americans: all workers at companies with over 100 employees, all federal employees and contractors, anyone who works for a health care provider that receives Medicare or Medicaid reimbursements, any employee at a school that receives federal money from Head Start and a few other programs. — Testing: Biden is using federal authorities to surge the production and distribution of rapid Covid tests, including at-home tests. In which John Heilemann talks with renowned epidemiologist Dr Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota and a former member of Joe Biden's Covid-19 presidential transition advisory board. Heilemann and Osterholm discuss the past, present, and future of the pandemic as the Delta variant lays waste to the sense, just weeks ago, that America had gained the upper hand against Covid; the ways politicians have misjudged the virus and mismanaged our response to it; the Biden administration's scramble to employ tougher tactics to incentivize vaccination and quash the anti-mask crusade; the dangers posed by alarmingly low rates of vaccination in many countries around the world; and the likelihood of a new variant emerging that is even worse than Delta. Osterholm also reflects on his reputation in some quarters as Dr. Doom, and suggests one reason for continued optimism about the future no matter how grim the news on the Covid front may be: dogs. The Boys are panicking, and you should too, because the new Delta variant of COVID is going to kill everybody. A former Obama official says defunding the police did not cause crime to rise, it was the fault of the police. President Joe Biden's COVID vaccine goal will not be met, and a Minnesota girl slams the school board over BLM posters after “no politics” promise. The left aims to defeat another pipeline, but Native American business leaders defend its construction. The Phoenix Suns have told their fans to “keep their cool” after the latest arena fight, and nearly 4,000 fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts have tested positive for COVID-19. Couples who blame the pandemic for their relationship troubles are much happier, and the hard-liner Iranian president was involved in 1988 mass executions, at age 28. An Olympic athlete talked about exploding Trump's head, and the desire to win a gold medal, only to be able to burn an American flag on the podium.
As people around the world begin to contemplate life after COVID-19, governments are trying to figure out how to re-open their economies safely while the virus continues to circulate. Some countries, like Israel and Denmark, have introduced digital vaccine passports to allow residents access to indoor spaces like restaurants and movie theatres. Those in favour of these certificates argue that they are the safest, easiest, and most effective way of reopening the economy quickly. Citizens should only be allowed to participate in society if they can prove they aren't a health risk to others. And while it is true that everyone has the right to forgo vaccination, they must also accept the limitations and consequences that come with that choice. Critics see these passports as a coercive scheme that forces people to get vaccinated, as well as a dangerous threat to personal rights and freedoms that will exacerbate society's inequities and transfer more power into the hands of the government. The state, they say, has no right to mandate personal movements based on a medical treatment, and vaccine passports have no place in any democratic and free society. Arguing for the motion is Ezekiel Emanuel. He is an oncologist, bioethicist, and Vice Provost for Global Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania, and a former member of Joe Biden's COVID-19 transition team. Arguing against the motion is Natalie Kofler. She's a molecular biologist and lecturer at Harvard Medical School, and the founding director of Editing Nature at Yale University QUOTES: EZEKIEL EMANUEL: "We have long had policies of vaccine certification, and we're simply adapting those to the new 21st century and COVID." NATALIE KOFLER: "'Vaccine passports' add another layer of disenfranchisement and inequity towards people and countries that have been disproportionately impacted by serious issues in vaccine distribution." A deal has been reached in the Senate to pave the way forward on President Joe Biden's Covid relief bill after activity in the chamber ground to a halt for hours on Friday amid a holdup over unemployment benefits.A Democratic aide told CNN that Senate Democrats plan to offer an amendment to extend the enhanced unemployment insurance program through September 6 at a rate of $300 per week as part of an agreement that West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin has accepted.Manchin had earlier stalled passage of the bill over an impasse on unemployment benefits, with Republicans urging him to sign on to an amendment they had crafted. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

The Senate is about to use a trick called “reconciliation” to pass Joe Biden's Covid relief bill. It's the way we've passed all kinds of policies from the Trump tax cuts to portions of Obamacare. And many want to keep using it to pass all kinds of policies that would never otherwise make it through the Senate's filibuster - things like a rise in the minimum wage, climate policies, and infrastructure investments. But Tori Gorman, a budget expert at the Concord Coalition, says that might be a big mistake. She explains how reconciliation really works, and why it's in everyone's best interests for it to go away.
