Emily, is working on her Bachelor's Degree in Nutritional Science and is looking forward to completing a PhD in the same field a few years after graduation. Emily has been sensitive to metals her whole life, starting with a severe allergy to earrings and other jewelry as a child. In early 2019 she was talked into getting her nose pierced by a friend and was SUPER excited. Even picking out cute nose rings. Within months of that nose piercing Emily developed multiple autoimmune diseases and suffered with the debilitating effects of Trigeminal Neuralgia, a syndrome nicknamed “The Suicide Disease” creating painful nerve sensations on the face. She also suffered from an onset of joint pain, repeated sore throats and swelling of her lymph nodes, as well as all kinds of tenderness surrounding the area. Around the same time frame Emily started noticing increase symptoms from several mercury fillings in her mouth, experiencing a large “flair” when the fillings were removed and likely swallowing a small piece of the extracted filling during removal. Symptoms from her fillings were most notably a metallic taste in her mouth, among others. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Michelle Jorgensen. She is an author, speaker, teacher, and holistic dentist. She is a Functional Integrative Dentist (DDS) and a Board-Certified Traditional Naturopath (BCTN). It wouldn't show up easily on a hair analysis test. A provocation test can be done to detect mercury in the body as it takes something from the tissue for testing.  The best way to find the kind of Mercury you are dealing with is through a urine test It took a while before Dr. Michelle's health improved due to Mercury exposure. It's a slow process of recovery. [11:38] Mercury Poisoning and Its Harmful Effects on the Body Zinc helps in creating stomach acid.  The presence of mercury in the body prevents the creation of stomach acid, hence it'll be hard to digest food and absorb the nutrients. No matter what you do, if your stomach can't create acid, it'll be hard to break down food. You'll end up getting malnourished and a lot of problems may arise. Mercury doesn't affect thyroid function as much as Fluoride.  Fluoride, Iodine, Bromine, and Chloride may have an effect and interfere with thyroid hormone activation. Mercury is like a bully that has an effect against everything. A baby can inherit the Mercury that exists in their mom's body or tissues. It detoxes into the baby.  One's body works differently than the others. Some are experiencing Methylation issues or Methylation variations that enable the body to determine whether to keep or throw something. [18:41] What to Do When You Have Issues with your Dental Fillings? If you're having a Mercury issue with your fillings, you have to get it removed safely. You shouldn't just remove them unsafely from a regular dentist.  It's better to let it be than have it removed unsafely. Removing it unsafely is giving a risk of much bigger mercury exposure than leaving them be. [25:40] How Do Oxygenation and Airway Issues Affect a Person's Sleep? At least 75% of people have airway obstruction, however, it isn't entirely sleep apnea. Oxygen is needed in the blood as the blood takes it to every single cell in the body. If you're not getting enough oxygen, your blood won't have much oxygen. If you have high blood pressure that you can't figure out what the cause is, it might be due to low oxygenation and airway issues when you're sleeping.  Oura ring can help become an indicator of your oxygen saturation. When a person wakes up because they need to go to the bathroom, they are already awake at the time. The body has a hormone that prevents oneself from the need to go to the bathroom, so if you have this urge, then you're already awake the moment you felt it. A cone beam CT scan is one of the things that can help you in checking your airway. It will help determine what's causing the lack of sleep in a person. It needs to be a Cone Beam CT scan full volume or a larger volume for this. Gum recession, worn-out front teeth, bumps of bone under the tongue from squeezing and clenching to flatten the tongue and open up the airway, etc. are signs that you need to pay attention to. [40:25] Possible Solutions and the Things that Dr. Michelle Recommends One of the solutions you could do is to get a sleep study, check what's currently happening, etc. The tongue position could be one of your issues. You may have a tongue tie that can be solved by Myofunctional Exercises and tongue tie release. Dr. Michelle Jorgensen also recommends going with a myofunctional therapist.  AND MUCH MORE!  What to do about Mercury Dental Fillings?   To be perfectly clear -Mercury is toxic-its a poison. One of the main symptoms is cognitive impairment, including memory loss. Mercury can also induce the characteristic amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles seen in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. It also damages the antioxidant glutathione which limits our ability to handle free radicals.  So there are many reasons to stay away from this dangerous substance. And this isn't really new.The effects of mercury were known throughout history. Mercury toxicity resulted in the phrase "mad as a hatter" .   Mercury was used in the manufacturing of felt hats during the 19th century, causing a high rate of mercury poisoning among those working in the hat industry.   This was  later immortalized in Lewis Carroll's classic Alice's Adventures in wonderland. There are two forms of mercury that can harm us:Organic or  methyl mercury which can be found in fish. This will be the topic of another video.Inorganic or metal mercury can be acquired from handling old mercury thermometers but today the greatest risk is from the metal in certain fillings in our teeth.         Now how do we know if we have mercury exposure and possible early toxicity? There is a blood test but because Mercury tends to migrate to other tissues such as bone and brain the blood test may not be positive. It is thus possible to have mercury toxicity without increased blood levels.  If the blood mercury is equal to or greater than 5 mcg/L then there is mercury toxicity. If  blood levels are below that there still could be toxicity for the reasons mentioned.         The current most sensitive mercury test uses a combination of blood, urine and hair to make the determination. And it reports   inorganic and methyl mercury levels separately so the source can be determined. Its called the Mercury Tri-Test from Quicksilver Scientific        People of a certain age may have amalgam dental fillings.  Dental amalgam is an alloy of silver, copper, tin, and zinc combined with 50% mercury.Look in your mouth and look for the characteristic dark appearance of the amalgam.Note some amalgam may be hidden below a crown.So just because you don't see any amalgam doesn't mean it's not there if you have crowns.                  Each amalgam filling can leak up to 10 micrograms of mercury/day into circulation according to some reports.Experts don't agree about the toxicity of Mercury from amalgam. For example the Alzheimer's Association says that "according to the best available scientific evidence there is no relationship between silver dental fillings and Alzheimer's" . Others are not so sanguine. Some studies show a relationship and others do not. Since mercury is a known toxin, we are taking an aggressive position here if mercury is abnormally high or cognitive impairment is occurring.       The relationship between the amount of mercury and the number of amalgam fillings is not straightforward. For example the amount of mercury detected in tests is not related to number of amalgams but rather to the surface area of the amalgam. Also some amalgams leak more than others.So what shall we do?Here is Rule #1 that just about everyone would agree upon:         Don't get any new amalgam fillings.
