Hello to you listening here, there and everywhere!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. My dear friend, colleague, and fellow podcaster Charlene Norman, the voice behind The 5Cs podcast sent me a post on LinkedIn written by Terry Szuplat (Obama speechwriter 2009-17) and founder Global Voices Communications.Mr. Szuplat's essay, Take Heart - We Will Endure, calls to be shared because we are down in the trenches and welcoming any sign of how to keep our good selves going. This is what he wrote:"To our friends around the world asking, “What's going on?” Well… 77 million Americans voted for Trump. 78 million voted for other candidates…So, no, it was not a “landslide.”It was another close election in a very divided country. How are we doing, you ask?Yes, we're disheartened.Like you, we are deeply, deeply concerned about what we're witnessing every day.Good, innocent people are being hurt -- across the United States and around the world. There's a lot of anxiety and fear, especially about what comes next. But we want you to know -- we're still here. The majority of Americans did not vote for this.A majority of Americans, according to the latest polls, do not approve of this.We know we are not alone. We are not powerless. And we're not going anywhere.Yes, Trump won the most votes. He won the election. He has a right to pursue his policies. But we are still a nation of laws, and he does not have a right to violate them.So we'll keep standing up for the country we believe in.For rights enshrined in our Constitution. For the rule of law.For justice. For treating one another with empathy and compassion. For a country where power comes from the people, not a king.It may not always make the headlines, but know that we're standing up.We're standing up in town halls in our communities. We're standing up in the streets. We're standing up in Congress. We're standing up in the courts. We're standing up in our neighborhoods, schools, companies, libraries, and our organizations. We're standing up here online—connecting with, empowering, and inspiring each other and lifting up the stories and voices of Americans who are courageously speaking out. We're under no illusions. This is not a time for blind faith or wishful thinking. It's not to say that everything will be OK.It won't, especially for vulnerable people. We're only a few weeks in. This will get worse before it gets better. As we stand up, sometimes we'll win. Sometimes we'll lose. We may not be able to stop the worst abuses. But we promise you — we're not giving up.We'll do everything we can everywhere we can every day we can to preserve this country that we love.As a nation, as a people, we've been through challenging times before -- horrors and hardships that have tested whether this great American experiment could survive.Slavery.A civil war.Segregation.A Great Depression.Social unrest.Mass movements for justice and equality. And now, as then, we draw strength from each other and what we know in our hearts:We shall overcome. We will endure.Because when it comes to standing up for the country and values we believe in, we're still guided by those words of long ago:“Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never.”Though hard to see right now, the America you know is still here, and — after the storm — we'll still be standing." 2024 election results: https://lnkd.in/eNVkcXdBWritten by Terry Szuplat, Obama speechwriter (2009-17) | Bestselling author of SAY IT WELL: Find Your Voice, Speak Your Mind, Inspire Any Audience | Keynote Speaker | Adjunct Professor, American University | Global Voices CommunicationsYou're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, (including Android, Amazon Music, Audible & Pandora Radio) and join us next time! After a contentious election cycle and along with the ongoing division found in our country, and considering the holidays are right around the corner, let us not run away from our families, but seek shelter and healing within them...even when we do not agree politically, morally, and spiritually.

Sir Keir Starmer has told police to stay on ‘high alert' for more disorder, as rafts of rioters receive lengthy jail sentences in Britain's courts. Has the unrest petered out, or could it yet flare up again? And how will the government get a grip on the longer-term challenges the recent violence has thrown up – from illegal immigration to community cohesion? The FT's Lucy Fisher is joined by northern England correspondent Jennifer Williams and UK correspondent William Wallis to assess the fallout. Plus Sunder Katwala, director of British Future, a think-tank specialising in integration, joins with his analysis of how Starmer should start to heal the ‘fractious, divided and anxious country'.Follow Lucy on Twitter @LOS_Fisher, Jen @JenWilliamsMEN, William @WWFTUK, Sunder @sundersaysWant more? John Suzuki believes we all have three careers; first to learn and go to school, second to earn and make a living, and third to return and give back. Now in his third career of giving back, John's mission is to make the world better by inspiring people to live with less fear and divisiveness and bring a little more love into the world. John's skills include inspirational speaking, storytelling, problem-solving, technology evangelism, sales & marketing, and relationship building. His authentic and sincere spirit and caring for people are always appreciated by those around him. Happily married for nearly 40 years, John and his wife split their time between Seattle and San Diego where their children and grandkids live. In episode 378 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why John believes that the third stage in life is to give back, what are the dangers of a divided and broken country, why he decided to write about the story of Shiro "Kash" Kashino in his book "American Grit – From a Japanese American Concentration Camp Rises an American War Hero", how the most hated Americans ultimately defeat America's enemies, what happened to these heroes after World War II concluded, what we need to do as citizens to ensure that it never happens again, how we can live in a society with less fear and more love, and what the response has been to the book. Enjoy!
This week, we bring you an episode from Feet in 2 Worlds and its series Immigrants in a Divided Country, which explores the current political landscape from the perspective of immigrants. In this personal audio essay, writer and audio producer Boen Wang goes looking for answers. He always thought his mom—an immigrant from Mainland China —was brainwashed by the Chinese Communist Party. His mom, on the other hand, thinks he's been brainwashed by the New York Times and CNN. To break the deadlock Boen interviews his mom about the evolution of her political beliefs—which are on the opposite end of the spectrum from his.As he learns more about his family and himself, Boen discovers the surprising history and etymology of the term “brainwashing”—which goes back to the last Chinese empire and is deeply rooted in American Cold War-era anxieties about the rise of communism. In the end, he emerges with a new understanding of the use and misuse of “brainwashing” and shares his thoughts on how people with opposing views can live with their differences.Episode Transcript

In this episode, I look at an article published in the fall of 2022 by Barna Group, an organization that does research related to Christianity and American culture. The article, which is entitled Does a Divided Public Look to Pastors for Guidance?', looks at the statistics surrounding which people or institutions Americans trust to make a positive change in society. Shockingly, many Americans, even those that don't go to church, still think that religious leaders should give guidance on issues that divide our nation. I break down the article, and then offer a theological reflection of it based on Revelation 5, 1 Timothy 3, and James 4. I argue that Jesus is the messiah, that we are his people, and that church leaders enable us as the people of God to make a positive difference in the world. This week, Faith Matters was delighted to welcome Dan Vallone, the US Director for More in Common, a nonprofit foundation whose mission is to build a more united and inclusive America that is resilient to the profound threats posed by our country's polarization.Dan has a super impressive background, including serving six years active duty as a US Army infantry officer, with one tour in Afghanistan. He is a graduate of West Point and earned a Master's degree from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore on a Fulbright Scholarship, and later an MBA from Harvard Business School. He also spent time as a special advisor on innovation to the US Department of Education. In this conversation, Dan spent time helping us understand why it seems we have become so divided politically in the United States. He shared some really interesting research that shows that the large majority of Americans are proponents of listening, compromise, and good-faith engagement with those on the other side of the aisle. Dan left us with several practical takeaways about how we can be active healers in our communities, and how faith institutions like the Church can play vital roles in helping us come together. We want to extend a huge thanks to Dan for his thoughtfulness and leadership on this issue and hope you enjoy!
The news that the National Institutes of Health funded hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of experiments on dogs in a foreign country sparked outrage in U.S. media. The idea of wasteful spending on useless animal experiments has been the target of PETA for years. But now it's apparent that in the divided political environment of Washington, there's one issue that is truly bipartisan: Saving the Animals, and especially those at NIH. PETA Sr. VP Kathy Guillermo talks about the Research Modernization Deal that could be a bipartisan answer to a cruel and ugly situation at NIH, where nearly $40 billion dollars goes to wasteful animal experiments every year. Listen now. Then take action at PETA.org The PETA Podcast PETA, the world's largest animal rights organization, is 6.5 million strong and growing. This is the place to find out why. Holmberg's Morning Sickness - Brady Report - Wednesday September 1, 2021
At the height of Adolf Hitler's reign, German theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, created an underground seminary for Jesus followers who opposed the church's complicity with Nazi control. It was within this distressing context that Bonhoeffer penned these words in his book, Life Together: “The greatest threat to Christian community is our expectation of some wishful idealized version of it… Those who love their dream of a Christian community more than the Christian community itself become destroyers of that Christian community.” In the United States today, we do not live under fascist control or in the thick of genocide, but our country appears to be more polarized and divided than ever. Do the words of Bonhoeffer deliver any hope for the American church today? And what does the book of Acts have to say about unity among believers? Is Christian unity even possible in our divided country? (Spoiler: we believe it absolutely is. Listen to this week of Acts Verse by Verse to discover how.)

From racial injustice protests to divisive electoral politics to a Confederate flag in the Capitol on January 6th and impeachment hearings, our country’s divisions have been on full display. This has challenged many Americans - and those around the world - to relook at democracy and its principles. This discussion will explore what democracy means in a divided country and whether unity is possible in a democratic republic.
