In #18, Michael Sikand (@michaelsikand) and Simran Sandhu (@_simmy_) chat with Mike Fata (@themikefata), Founder of Manitoba Harvest. Mike dropped 100 lbs while sticking to a no fat diet, but it was his discovery of hemp seeds, that prompted him to realize that healthy fat diets were the future. It took him 20 years, but Mike scaled Manitoba's signature hemp heart packets (seeds) into a popular food supplement embraced by mindful eaters across the U.S. and Canada. By 2019, Manitoba had achieved $100M in annual sales and Canadian weed giant Tilray stepped in to buy it for $419M. From reflecting on creating a category from scratch to providing startup advice to young people, Mike brings listeners and viewers into his sharp, tactical mind. His role as an investor and advisor in up and coming CPG brands like Mid-Day Squares and Dream Pops makes him an excellent judge of what young people are bringing to market and if they have a chance at cracking a real market.  Follow Mike on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/themikefata/ Follow Mike on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themikefata/?hl=en Make sure to like, subscribe, or leave a review for Our Future Podcast, the entrepreneurship podcast for young people!  Follow the show on TikTok: @ourfuturepod  Follow the show on IG: @ourfuturepod  Message Michael on Twitter: @michaelsikand.  Message Simmy on Twitter: @_simmy_  Our Future Podcast is a production of Morning Brew.businesses without focusing on just one at a time. Practically as soon as it got off the ground, Dream Pops was already under pressure. Founder and CEO David Greenfeld admits that launching the platform brand of plant-based, indulgent desserts and candy via a direct-to-consumer model – a strategy that almost bankrupted the company – was a mistake. However, lessons learned – and shared – have given Dream Pops a foundation to disrupt multi-billion dollar categories. Launched in 2018, the company aims to challenge legacy confectionary brands by giving consumers better-for-you options across four product lines, including its flagship coconut milk-based popsicles and shelf-stable chocolate-coated snacks sweetened with coconut sugar. The brand is sold in over 6,500 stores, including nationally at Whole Foods as well as locations of Wegmans, H.E.B. and Harris Teeter, among others. Dream Pops' innovation and retail strategy is bolstered by its active social media presence, which Greenfeld says “completely changed the trajectory of the company.” Greenfeld has over 44,000 followers on LinkedIn and points to constant engagement on the platform as driving significant interest in Dream Pops among industry professionals. Meanwhile, the brand's early embrace of TikTok has helped it attract over 181,000 fans and millions of views of its short videos. Within this episode, Greenfeld spoke about the origins of Dream Pops, how he navigated a myriad of challenges in the frozen aisle, the duality of better-for-you and indulgent food and how he used the popsicles as a proof of concept and springboard into shelf-stable products. He also explained why every CPG company needs to also be a “content company,” the importance of investing in merchandising and why consistency is the most important aspect of Dream Pops' social media strategy.   Show notes: 0:42: Interview: David Greenfeld, Founder/CEO, Dream Pops – Greenfeld sat down with Taste Radio   editor Ray Latif and chatted about his experience as a finalist in NOSH Pitch Slam 3, his method and process for gaining followers and influence on Linkedin, and what motivates him to invest in early-stage companies. He also discussed the meaning and importance of the brand name, why he was bullish on the frozen aisle, how the term “plant-based” has evolved in recent years and its impact on the development of Dream Pops. Later, he spoke about the company's roadmap for innovation and new product development, applying learnings from merchandising in the frozen set to ambient shelves and whether it's too late for brands to now start incorporating TikTok into their social media strategies. Today's guest is David Greenfeld, founder of the plant-based popsicle company Dream Pops. David is a student of successful entrepreneurs and takes a very academic approach to grow as an individual as well as a business owner. For instance, when he was starting out his professional journey, he figured it would be a good idea to have a grasp of finance, so he went into investment banking. And concurrently with banking, he was on the lookout for markets with untapped potential. He eventually found one in popsicles, but to say the rest is history would be to ignore the persistence and clever series of pivots that led him to create a national brand. Listen in as we cover everything from why there are no overnight success stories in business, why Dream Pops will not be the brand that relies heavily on celebrity partnerships, and why entrepreneurship is a sport.

It was an unconventional convention, yet Natural Products Expo East 2021 was nevertheless a memorable event. Following a one-year hiatus, the annual trade show settled into its new home in Philadelphia where Taste Radio hosts Ray Latif, John Craven and Mike Schneider met with dozens of food and beverage brand exhibitors along with many early-stage founders and first-time attendees who walked the floor.  In this episode, Latif, Craven and Schneider discussed the general mood and reception for Expo East 2021 and what it means  for the future of in-person industry events. They also highlighted several new and recently launched products featured at the show and later debated the merits of traditional ingredients when crafting a host-favorite cocktail. Show notes: 0:34: Ripping The Band-Aid Off, Startup Parties And A Call For Campari -- The hosts chatted about the positive energy of attendees at Expo East, what it was like interacting mask-to-mask, sampling at the event and what made it a manageable show. They also spoke about investor and retail presence at Expo East, a unique pizza record player, attending industry parties and looking forward to more in-person and competitions coming in December at BevNET Live, NOSH Live and Brewbound Live. Later, Ray recalled an unfortunate (first-world problem) moment experienced at Expo East that led to a conversation about negronis and what should and shouldn't be included in the cocktail. The explosion of the NFTs space has been nothing short of remarkable. So, should your CPG brand consider jumping on this trend? While NFTs could represent a huge opportunity to tap into the growth of virtual worlds and connect with consumers, I don't want CPG brand owners to get too excited and make silly decisions because a lot of the various valuable applications are longer term plays that go beyond digital art and collectibles. Jumping on a bandwagon because it's trending seems to be an often-used strategy today, but you have to ask yourself if NFTs will create any real value for your brand. If not, maybe wait and see how the bleeding edge space evolves over time. That being said, I'll share how some of the highest profile CPG brands are experimenting with NFTs (including Pringles, Dunkaroos, Charmin, and Dream Pops). Some might argue that NFTs are a fad and others might have no idea what NFTs were until this piece of content, but my prediction is CPG brands will find enough utility in the brand building and promotional areas that will create a long enough runway to reach the deeper long-term benefits.
