Ruth Sanderson visits the East Neuk of Fife on the east coast of Scotland. "Neuk" is the Scots word for a nook or corner, and Ruth finds plenty of interesting corners to explore as she braves the wind and the cold to meander up the coastline from Elie to Crail. She finds out about the Fife coastal path, discovers some of its many beaches and learns about its seabirds. She also meets a geologist-turned-restaurateur with a professional interest in the area's sealife, who tells her about the importance of fish to the region's trading history. Some of the old fishing villages are now havens for artists: in Crail Ruth visits a family-run pottery which was set up in the 1960s, and discovers how the landscape has inspired three generations of creativity. Scottish rewilding, a network of Scottish landholdings committed to rewilding has grown to 50 partners in its first 18 months, far outpacing expectations and revealing a strong appetite for nature restoration across the country. Title image Woody scrub regenerating at Northwoods Rewilding Network partner, Tireregan. Copyright James Shooter/scotlandbigpicture.com The Northwoods Rewilding Network was launched in April 2021 by rewilding charity SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, with an initial goal of signing up 20 landholdings in the first two years. But the network expanded rapidly and has recently welcomed its 50th partner: Glassie Farm in Aberfeldy, Perthshire. Landholdings in the network range from farms and crofts to community woodlands and private estates, and the network's partners are the owners, managers or trustees of the sites. When partners join the network, some are taking their first steps in rewilding, while others are building on longstanding commitments to nature restoration. Scottish rewilding network grows The size of partner sites ranges from 50 to 1,000 acres, and with the network's 50th partner signed up, Northwoods now covers more than 13,000 acres. James Nairne, Northwoods Project Lead at SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, says there is widespread recognition that the ecological health of some of Scotland's landscapes needs to be restored. “The thread that runs through the Northwoods Rewilding Network is a determination to be part of the solution to climate breakdown and biodiversity loss,” he says. “What's taken us by surprise is the strength of the appetite. From Sutherland to the Solway Firth, and from the East Neuk of Fife to the Ross of Mull, this is a landowner-driven aspiration – they've come to us more than the other way round.” Each Northwoods partner makes rewilding commitments tailored to the site, which may include the expansion or enrichment of native woodlands, the restoration of carbon-storing wetlands or the creation of wildlife corridors to allow animals to roam freely across the landscape. “Rewilding is ultimately about restoring dynamic natural processes, and Northwoods was established to help remove the barriers to taking action,” says Nairne. “We support our land partners with ecological knowledge, practical advice and funding opportunities.” Gavin Drummond and Laura Hay are the owners of Harestone Moss, just north of Aberdeen, and joined the Northwoods Rewilding Network in May 2022. The 70-acre site was farmed conventionally for many decades, and rewilding commitments include reversing the effects of 1950s drainage by creating ponds and wetlands. This re-wetting will enable peatlands to resume carbon sequestration. “We have an opportunity to create something amazing – a site where visitors can appreciate the restored landscape and the return of wildlife, and where we can earn a living in a way that doesn't harm the land,” says Hay. The biggest site in the network, and the one that has been rewilding for longest, is Tireragan on the Isle of Mull. Cared for by volunteers of the Tireragan Trust, the site is home to a remnant of nationally important Atlantic rainforest, and has been a rewilding pioneer since 1997 when intensive grazing was curtailed. Judy Gibson, a Tireragan trustee, says: “We are committed to enhancing the biodiversity of this special place but doing so in a way that maintains a human connection through recreation and education. Being part of Northwoods helps us drive our ambition forwards, to share our experiences and learn from others.” For more information, visit scotlandbigpicture.com/northwoods. In a world where our attention spans are getting shorter, where we are rewarded not for the attention we pay to others but the attention we receive – is it time we re-evaluated the value of attentive growing and farming, and mindful eating? Could paying attention, as cheesemonger and podcast host Sam Wilkin argues, be the secret to great food and drink production and relishing what we consume on a daily basis? Sam takes us to Westcombe Dairy, where he's been following their transition to regenerative agriculture for the past year, as part of the Westcombe Project. We visit a pioneering island distillery in the Inner Hebrides, as well as growers and brewers at an inaugural organic food festival in the East Neuk of Fife. The common thread that binds them? The belief that a more attentive approach has the power to transform the food system and improve our lives in the process. Presented by Jaega Wise. Produced by Robbie Armstrong in Glasgow.

Some of Scotland's finest food is produced in Fife - but locals rarely get a look-in, as it's usually transported away to be processed, packaged and eaten elsewhere. However, Balcaskie Estate in the region's East Neuk is working hard to change that, by bringing together small-scale food businesses including a butcher, a miller and a brewer at a hub on-site, where they process some of the organic raw ingredients produced on the land. Nancy Nicolson visits the estate on its monthly market day, when the doors of the Bowhouse centre are thrown open to consumers and other traders, and hears from the farm manager and some of the others involved in the business about the ethos and objectives of the centre and the wider estate. Presented and Produced by Nancy Nicolson.

I am so thrilled to welcome Emily Hague to The Joy of SUP Podcast today. I discovered Emily on Instagram and was so interested in her work with On The Killer Whale Trail. Emily is a marine biologist, specialising in marine mammals - whales, dolphins and seals. As well as her research, she has a deep care and passion for the sea and all that encompasses it. She is a volunteer lifeboat crew onboard the Anstruther RNLI Lifeboat. She also loves to spend her spare time walking or cycling coastal paths and beach cleaning. She loves getting in the sea itself, whether that's swimming, kayaking or more recently, paddleboarding! She is based in the beautiful East Neuk of Fife in Scotland, so mostly paddles around the skerries and rocks within the Firth of Forth. She also shares her wonderful paddles on the Shetland Isles. Emily runs On the Killer Whale Trail,  a social media platform dedicated to adventuring whilst looking for wildlife, with special highlights spotting killer whales in Shetland. She also runs the On the Litter Trail beach cleaning campaign, sponsored by Sea Changers. Through community action and team spirit the campaign collected over a tonne of litter in two weeks (including whilst paddleboarding!). Emily loves the freedom and sense of adventure that SUP brings. Whilst it can be fun to enjoy with friends, she finds a solo paddle magical, where you can really take time to enjoy the peace and calm that the ocean can bring. The sea, and all the wonderful creatures that inhabit it, are very close to Emily's heart  which is why she dedicates all her time to researching it, doing beach cleans, educating and encouraging others to enjoy it too.In this episode we also talk about:Being a member of RNLI Anstruther crewHow her Mum encouraged her love of orcas by telling her they were in the reservoirs of the Peak District! The devastating impact of plastic on wildlife in the oceanThe joy of community looking for orcasHer Bluefin 10 ft 8 paddleboardHer Batoko orca swimsuit You can find Emily:Instagram at @emilylhague and @onthekillerwhaletrail Twitter @emilyhague and @OntheKWTrail  Facebook On the Killer Whale TrailWebsite On The Killer Whale Trail You may also enjoy Hugh Harrop who photographs on Shetland Isles!I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it.! My guest in this episode is John Wills who has been involved in the underground music scene in the UK for almost 40 years. During that time has made a lot of music, played in many bands, seen a lot of the world and collected a raft of great, fascinating, and funny stories. So many in fact that this episode is a two-parter and it’s a great way to kick off the new year. The bio John sent through to me was entitled “My Bizarre Life of Happy Accidents and Near Misses” and as you listen to this episode you will see how apposite that title is Musically, John’s biggest commercial success was with the band Loop whose third album "A Gilded Eternity", released in 1990, made the Top 40 and was a Number 1 on the Indie Chart in the UK. He’s played Reading Festival, done multiple Peel sessions and been supported by The Happy Monday’s and Nirvana. In 2001 John moved with his wife and musical collaborator Pinkie Maclure to Scotland and they now live in the beautiful village of Cellardyke in the East Neuk of Fife. John and Pinkie perform under the name of Pumajaw and have released six albums with another in the works. Additionally, in 2013/4 they staged a multimedia show at the Edinburgh Festival called "Song Noir" which was voted in the Top 50 shows of the Festival This Spotify Playlist contains John's choices and a track from every artist mentioned during our chat. just cut and paste into your browser. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/64gcrLCFjQpyIcBdpqXnvY?si=YXBtZST-RIm0Uyn4STqc0gContact Details John's Personal email : johnw9906@gmail.com For Podcast work : editpod007@gmail.com Pumajaw website : https://pumajaw1.bandcamp.com/

In this special episode, we visit the Bowhouse, a food hub in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The East Neuk is a coastal region dotted with picturesque fishing villages and blessed with fertile volcanic soils. But – as is the case in much of the UK – very little of the food produced here is destined for direct local consumption. The Bowhouse is changing that by creating opportunities for local producers to reach customers, grow their businesses, and collaborate. We hear from founder Toby Anstruther, Market and Events Manager Rosie Jack, and some of the many producers who’ve found a home at the Bowhouse. At the end of the episode, we’ll get an update from Rosie Jack on how the Bowhouse has been affected by the pandemic, and how it’s adapted to ensure customers can still access local food – and that producers still have a route to market.

Clare Balding is joined by singers Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh of the band Deacon Blue to walk one of their favourite coastal routes in Fife. Starting at Elie they walk along the beach passing through the village of St Monan's ending in the picturesque fishing town of Pittenweem. Ricky and Lorraine have been married for over thirty years and perform together as part of the band, as well as having their own careers in broadcasting and acting. They say the secret to their enduring relationship is doing things together as a couple and sharing the same interests, one of which is walking. One of their favourite areas to walk is the East Neuk in Fife reputed to have some of the driest sunniest weather in the UK because of its sheltered position between the Rivers Forth and Tay. When Laura and Linda first met, at an event several years ago in Florida, Laura was surprised to hear Linda was leading the Leprosy Mission Scotland. She, like many others, had been under the impression leprosy had been eradicated; upon discovering that was not the case, Laura became curious and engaged Linda in today’s conversation about her work and what’s happening with the disease. Over the course of this conversation, the women cover a number of topics including the vision for the organization’s future work, what can be accomplished when a group of passionate people come together focused on a common cause, why developing yourself and your people is the key to success, and how self-care feeds everything! Linda has been with the Leprosy Mission Scotland for 21 years, starting as its Executive Director and growing into the organization’s CEO. In her role, she travels the world to connect with colleagues, raise funds, evaluate the organization’s operations, and meet with and learn the stories of the people who have been diagnosed with this disease. Like so many others, Linda learned the hard way that self-care is required if you have any intention of being productive, effective, and having any kind of staying power in whatever role you play. The pervasive thinking that putting in long hours, always putting the business first, is some kind of ‘badge of honor,’ is nonsense in Linda’s experience. “God designed us to take time out for rest and relaxation, to enjoy the splendor and wonder of his creation,” she explained. “We plan down time for machines and maintenance of equipment and systems, but not for ourselves.” It’s with this perspective that she is leading her organization and has built that mindset into her culture. Her team does not work when they are on holiday, and the understanding is that if you leave a message or send an email to someone who is out of the office for this purpose, you won’t get a response until they return to work. “I use humor to get this message across,” said Linda. “My ‘out of office’ message is in the voice of my laptop, explaining in a Reply email that ‘Linda went on holiday and left me here in the office…’” Her focus on connecting with and attending to the needs of the people in her work and life are evident in her practices and communication. Linda educates Laura on the current state of Leprosy, how many people are diagnosed with it daily (the number is staggering if you stop to think about it), the mindset issues associated with contracting and treating the disease, and what the Leprosy Mission is striving to achieve: Leprosy defeated and Lives Transformed. Listen in as Linda shares her insights about inspiring her team – “People are keen to be part of a winning team and they want to make a powerful impact.” She speaks to the idea of and focus on working herself and her colleagues out of a job when the disease is no longer an active health issue. And how she’s invested in her own personal growth and the intentional development of not only her team, but her colleagues in the other Leprosy Mission organizations around the world. In the end, Linda says she wants her epitaph to read: “She made a real difference.” As you listen in on today’s conversation, I’m sure you’ll agree, Linda Todd has already made a real difference and continues to do so. About Linda Todd Linda is the Country Leader and CEO of The Leprosy Mission Scotland. She joined TLMS as Executive Director in March 1998. Linda has extensive leadership, fundraising, coaching and management experience gained from over three decades of working in the Voluntary Sector and continual professional development. She is a Diploma-qualified member of the Institute of Fundraising, a Chartered member of CIPD, and a John Maxwell authorized Coach and Speaker. Under Linda’s leadership, TLMS holds Investors in People Platinum. She plays an active role within the Global Fellowship, currently chairing the Member Review Working group; a member of the TLM Trust India Board, and the reference group for the Leadership Development Program. Linda also plays an active role within Scotland through various umbrella-organizations – The Scottish International Development Alliance and the Institute of Fundraising Scotland. She lives on the south side of Glasgow where she attends Auldhouse Community Church. Other areas of service include the position of Treasurer for Glasgow Street Pastors and a member of Thornliebank Community Council. Other than her faith, her three great passions are her pug, Carletto (who thinks he’s another member of the staff team), her bolt-hole in the East Neuk of Fife, and The Leprosy Mission Scotland, though not necessarily always in that order! Kirsty Thomas runs creative studio Tom Pigeon from the East Neuk of Fife. We go through her journey from fashion design to teaching to the creation of Tom Pigeon and her latest project The Make Bank. After a bit of a false start with Sports Science Kirsty went on to a degree in Design Studies which didn’t exactly prepare her with the skills needed for industry but did give her broad scope which has lead to a really broad and varied career. After a stint with clothing company Joe Bloggs, she experienced what she describes as an ‘itch’. This becomes a theme throughout her career and has led to a sort of cyclical change every few years. I think it’s a really healthy part of human nature to stop ourselves from getting caught in a rut. The most dangerous thing you can do is not recognise the need for change. It is so important to take stock of everything once in a while and allow yourself some perspective on your situation and the direction you’re headed in. Since it’s creation in 2014 Tom Pigeon has become internationally known for colourful minimal geometric work across prints, stationery, jewellery and physical products. They have worked on many collaborations with museums, galleries and companies such as The Barbican, The Tate and made.com. We go into how that collaborative process, how it works and when it doesn’t, when it’s time to walk away. Walking away from projects isn’t something that has come up a lot in the podcast but it’s a difficult area especially when taking into consideration the financial implications. It comes down to your professional integrity and your vision for the future vs your financial situation and potential gain from a project. These really aren’t easy decisions to make. Kirsty’s most recent itch was one of social responsibility. She recognised that Tom Pigeon is in the privileged position of selling to an affluent audience and in general the creative industries are an area of white privilege. We have a massive issue of creative poverty in this country. Where school pupils and students are unable to gain access to basic materials in order to complete course work or create portfolios. This creates an imbalance where those who can afford the basics have fewer opportunities to access the creative industries than those who do. Regardless of talent or determination, it comes down to the ability to afford things like pencils and paper. The Make Bank has been created in order to help address this issue by creating packs that can be donated to those children who need it most. You simply head to the website themakebank.org.uk purchase a pack and they’ll distribute it for you. They also have an amazing range of prints for sale, donated by world-renowned creatives with all profits going towards addressing this UK wide issue. So if you are in a position to do so, I would urge you to please donate a pack or buy a print to help support this amazing cause. As well as providing the materials needed, The Make Bank is also trying to address the knowledge gap. To demystify how to create a career in the creative industries and to help parents and teachers understand that there are viable career options in these areas. Make Bank is doing this by capturing the stories, journeys and thoughts of creatives in the industry in the form of audio recordings, blog posts and video. This falls in line with what I am trying to achieve with this very podcast. Creative Chit Chat is very much Dundee focused and I hope that the podcast has managed to share insight and encourage people to get into the creative industries. It’s all down to how many people we can reach. If everyone was to share it with 1 person it would boost the audience massively so please do. This walk takes Iain to the East Neuk of Fife, home to Scotland's last village fishing industry. Yet the fishing is not what it once was - because many of the fish have disappeared from the Forth. Iain walks between Pittenweem and Anstruther, to hear how the decline of the fishing industry has affected them. As he follows the coast, he seeks out the wildlife which draws visitors to the area. What happens under the water affects the lives and livelihoods of the people who live in these villages, and Iain discovers that even today, this corner of Fife is shaped by its proximity to the sea.
