As Celeste describes it, she's had a long and illustrious journey of exploring different relationships and relationship styles as she continues learning who she is and what works best for her. For so long she tried to fit herself into what she calls "primary possessive partnerships" and unfortunately spent much of her time being triggered. Today, Celeste identifies as "solo open" and has filled her life with lovers, partners, and friends that she feels deeply connected to while also feeling safe and securely attached. This conversation is so beautiful and full of vulnerability, laughter, and love as Celeste takes us on her powerful journey. Enjoy! Celeste Hirschman, MA, is a visionary in intimacy and personal transformation. As co-founder of the Somatica Institute, she merges profound insight with compassion, empowering individuals to unlock deeper connections and embrace their authentic selves. So what happens to humans and their interconnectedness when two of the key elements—time and togetherness—are removed or increased? Can digital communication replace human to human contact? How do couples cope with stressful events they have never before encountered? This is the focus of a series of studies published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, which has dedicated several special issues to relationships in the time of COVID-19.“When COVID hit it became clear to me that… it would be really important for us to provide a space for relationship science to showcase their work,” says Pamela Lannutti, the director of the Center for Human Sexuality Studies at Widener University in Chester, Penn., and one of the editors of the series of issues. So the journal put out a call for researchers who had begun research on what relationships were like in this unique set of circumstances and the studies flooded in.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! At age 56, Jane went back to finish her PhD and completed this at 62. She tells us this brought her into her own intellectually. She chose to focus on sexuality, as she found it to be the root of humanity's problems. Her specialty is sexuality and aging. Her book, the Stonewall Generation, focuses on LGBTQ elders and the process required her to find people to interview. Her writing journey took her to the story of Stonewall “the birth of the modern day rights movement“ which stands today as a historical event for the gay community. Inclusivity Her goals include trying to combat ageism and the myth that LGBTQ is a young persons' identity. With all this in mind, Dr Jane targeted people who are marginalized so that their stories could be told through her book. Dr. Fleishman's aim is to experience pride events with more exciting sexual politics. With current upheaval in terms of racial injustice and other injustices, Jane believes that things will change to include more LGBTQ elders. Aging and Sex One of Dr. Jane's concerns revolves around older adults' cognitive decline and sexuality. The question she asks is “Do people have the ability and the right to have a sex positive future?“ This brings up ethical issues but Jane is passionate about helping the elderly and ensuring that even in old age, they can enjoy consensual sex. Background Jane Fleishman, PhD, MEd, MS, AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator, is an award-winning educator, writer, program developer and researcher with a keen perspective on the intersections of race, class, and sexuality, particularly for marginalized populations. She holds a PhD and MEd in Human Sexuality from the Widener University Center for Human Sexuality Studies. Jane is the Principal in her own consulting practice, Speaking of, LLC, specializing in program development, training, curriculum design, writing, and policy review related to human sexuality for older adults, parents, teenagers, young children, and members of the LGBTQ population. She hosts a regular podcast on topics related to sex in the second half of life at www.ourbetterhalf.net and recently completed a TEDx Talk entitled, “Is It OK for Grandma to Have Sex?” Her latest accomplishment is her book entitled, The Stonewall Generation: LGBTQ Elders on Sex, Activism, and Aging. Her curious nature has led her to research many topics related to sexuality, such as the associations between internalized homophobia, resilience, sexual communication, satisfaction in relationships, and sexual satisfaction in older adults' same-sex relationships. Her work has helped organizations of different sizes develop tools to understand their organizational plights and dilemmas and implement changes into their work environment that align with their values, principles, and vision. When Melissa Fabello talks, sex is bound to come up. It’s her job. As a sexuality scholar and body acceptance activist, Melissa sees so clearly that diet culture, body image, and sexuality intersect in ways that contribute to bodies experiencing oppression. One example is the lack of permission to bring our body pleasure and enjoy our sexual selves. From our basic human need to experience touch as a form of connection, to getting a nice massage, to the “Big O” when we struggle with our body image we are also likely to struggle with allowing ourselves to express desires and to feel pleasure through our bodies. This is not a chat about “here’s what you need to do to have a normal sex life.” In fact, Melissa offers a very interesting answer to this reader question at the end of the show. This conversation will help you understand that girls and women aren’t allowed to experience sexuality in positive ways and that impacts our body image. We discuss the “power dynamics” of subject vs object in our society and, perhaps more important, how you can have a conversation with your partner (or yourself!) in a safe, kind way that can help you grow your body confidence with your clothes on and clothes off. --- Get to know Melissa Melissa A. Episode 47: Melissa A. Fabello is a sexuality educator, body image and eating disorder activist, and media literacy vlogger based out of Philadelphia, PA. She is a Managing Editor of Everyday Feminism and a PhD student in Human Sexuality Studies, where her research interest is in the effectiveness of current sexuality-focused psychoeducational interventions in eating disorder recovery programs. Why am I so ridiculously excited to release this episode? Most of all because Melissa is an incredibly smart woman. She researches. She experiences. She's open-minded, but at the same time, she firmly stands for what she believes in. There are certain people I interview that I want on the show simply because they are awesome, but the conversation doesn't flow as well because they don't have mind-blowing things to say. That is not the case for this episode. I had a ton of questions to ask her that came from my own heart- things I've been dying to understand. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! Here's what we talk about: How Melissa became interested in feminism and sexuality in the first place The definition of feminism Can you be a feminist but also "traditional" when it comes to dating? Misconceptions about feminism in the media How the "bra burning" event isn't true, and what actually happened Breaking down the argument about having a female president such as Mrs. Clinton Why boys stop crying when they reach school-age, while girls continue to express themselves safely Genderization of kids before birth Okay, let's talk about Disney for a sec The actual problem with beauty pageants (no it's not the participant's fault) How Melissa adopted an eating disorder after a breakup Eating disorder management vs. recovery The importance of walking away when you feel triggered Here's where you can connect with Melissa: Website Twitter Tumblr Facebook YouTube Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube: maddymoon.com/youtubepodcast Is it about time you learn how to eliminate your own triggers and start your recovery journey with a group of other like-minded women?
