It's that time of year again when we head to the world-famous Edinburgh festivals to sample some of what's available for locals and visitors alike. The festivals are back with a bang this year - Edinburgh is absolutely jam-packed with people and performers. Producer Kelly and Rosalind brave the busy streets - starting the day with an Eating Edinburgh: Fringe Festival Food Tour. Luana Scott-Moncreif, their tour guide brings them to different restaurants and shops in the city, learning more about the fringe and catching some street performances on the way as they eat their way around Edinburgh. Their next stop was the Edinburgh Gin Distillery for Ready, Steady, Cocktail - yes, it is exactly what it sounds like - that famous show, reincarnated but with Edinburgh Gin-based cocktails. You'll hear Gordon Dundas who hosts the show and Rosalind speaking to Sarah Prior, Brand Homes Head of Sales and Marketing for Edinburgh Gin Distillery who tells her all about the show and the new distillery. Finally the team went along to see Emmy award-nominated Cory Cavin's 'Enjoy your meal' - a one man show which portrays a somewhat fraught evening in the life of chef Wayne Swingle. You'll hear some of the show as well as a chat Rosalind had with him online the next morning. If you do get to go to enjoy the festivals we hope you have a great time and enjoy some quality scran! Kim Brandstrup is a Danish born choreographer whose latest project, Breaking Bach, unites him with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Kim often works with leading classical companies, but in Breaking Bach he directs street dancers, some with no previous stage experience. What will they all find in Bach's exacting rhythms? Kim took an unusual route into choreography – he initially trained in film, before finding that dance was the perfect medium for his narrative impulse. His recent rich, elegant ballets draw on Hans Christian Andersen and timeless Greek myths.Kim Brandstrup studied film at the University of Copenhagen and choreography at London School of Contemporary Dance. He founded his dance company Arc in 1985, forging a narrative style that owes more to his early cinematic training than to classical story ballet or contemporary dance. His has been commissioned by international companies including the Royal Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and the Royal Danish Ballet. Throughout his career he has sought a theatre of movement that is both powerful and subtle, creating poignant and suggestive narratives that are intensely human and emotionally revealing.Kim Brandstrup's website https://kimbrandstrup.org/Breaking Bach at the Edinburgh Festival https://www.eif.co.uk/events/breaking-bachWhy Dance Matters is a dance podcast featuring inspiring conversations with extraordinary people from the world of dance and beyond. It's a lament time of year. It's an Edinburgh time of year. A time when John yearns for the crippling comedic examination which is the Edinburgh Festival. For he cannot experience that emotional rollercoaster this year. He can't sit on a stage and call himself a C*** after someone shouts “have you had a ploughman's” during the most emotionally hefty part of his show.Thankfully Elis's wedding DJ, Nish Kumar, is on hand to bring despatches from the Caledonian comic frontline. And as always that isn't all. Because as a magazine show commands, there must be a selection of other lighthearted segments and features. In such bits expect John to, yet again, admonish Elis's potential car selection and a return of an old featurey friend to set tongues alight. It's elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk and 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp for all of your passing thoughts. And do go check out the blooming Bureau de Change of the mind eps on the BBC Sounds feed if you haven't already!
It's the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025 series Elaine chats with performer and co-creator Maria Teresa Creasey and Rebecca Reeves director and co-creator of Degenerate. Degenerate – Pleasance Courtyard (Bunker One) 30 July - 23 August (not 5, 12, 19) Time: 23:10 (60 mins) She is style, she is grace, she has blood dripping from her face: she's Degenerate. Degenerate Maria just wants to perform for you - but the voice in the room is keeping her captive. Made to reenact an onslaught of famous horror scenes, will she make it out alive? Why does the voice seem hell-bent on keeping her here? And in a world where social worth is placed upon beauty and youth, who wouldn't want to live forever? A high-octane, biting satire, Degenerate holds a mirror up to ageing and society, with Maria Teresa Creasey being the manic-pixie-scream-girl we've waited a lifetime for. Crammed with horror references, tap dancing and the queen of all vampires (Shania Twain, obviously. Seriously, how does she look like that? Still?), this is the mother of late-night comedies at the Fringe. A comedy so raw, so sexy, so deranged it'll make you rethink your skincare routine. It's the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025 series Elaine chats with performer Michelle Monteith about Red Like Fruit Red Like Fruit – Traverse Theatre – various times Award-winning Canadian theatre company 2b returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with the UK premiere of critically acclaimed playwright Hannah Moscovich's (Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes with Hugh Jackman) honest, raw, and gut-punching play about power, reclaiming narratives, and gender. Red Like Fruit While Lauren's been reporting on a high-profile case of domestic violence, she's been thinking back with eerie ambivalence on a set of sexual events from her adolescence, and something in her has started to crack. Soon, Lauren can no longer comprehend her own decisions and desires (like why she asked Luke to narrate for her in the first place). Red Like Fruit interrogates the many contradictions and complexities of complicity, consent, patriarchy and traumatic memory in the post #MeToo era. Harriet is a writer, producer and performer for stage, screen and radio. The Spectator said of her debut play THE LISTENING ROOM “You emerge with your consciousness altered, your conception of human beings elevated and amplified”. THE LISTENING ROOM transferred from the Old Red Lion to Stratford East and has since been performed at the National Theatre, The Lowry, Theatre Clwyd, Northern Stage and in prisons & psychiatric institutions across the UK. A radio adaptation was created with BBC Radio 4 and nominated for an ARIA in 2020.Harriet's most recent radio drama THE OTHER TCHAIKOVSKY was shortlisted for a BBC Audio Drama Award in 2021 & a 90 minute film adaptation is now in development with BBC2.Harriet's first solo show OUTPATIENT premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in 2024 and won the Summerhall Lustrum Award for Unforgettable Theatre.Harriet is currently developing a number of projects for stage and screen. She runs a theatre company, Crowded Room, with whom she was shortlisted for the Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award at the Barbican.(This bio courtesy of Independent Talent - https://www.independenttalent.com/writers/harriet-madeley/) Harriet and I discuss how theatre can be so profound and impactful by asking questions that many are scared or uncomfortable to ask. Such as, how does it feel when you're hit by a life-threatening illness and how does it feel knowing you're going to die?Her recent show “Outpatient”, which I was lucky to see at the Park Theatre a few weeks ago, tackles these big questions. We meet character “Olive” an aspiring journalist who is struck down with PSC (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis) a terrible illness for which there is no cure and could end her life either in 10 years or in 10 days. Based on Harriet's own battle with the same illness, the play is a semi-autobiographical commentary on what life is like living with a disease you don't know about and what it'll be like for your loved ones when you're gone. Harriet is so open and honest, talking about her love for truthful theatre, her journey with the play through the festival circuit and in London as well as her own personal journey with PSC. Thank you so much again Harriet for being so open and being so generous with my questions and of course for your art! I hope you all have the opportunity to catch this play in the future. Hello Grab a pillow and lay down. Drift off. Allow yourself to dream. Such overt direction wouldn't normally feature in a Thoroughly Good Podcast introduction, but its fitting for this one with pianist Hanni Liang who, ever the experimenter with concert formats, tests out an element of her forthcoming Edinburgh Festival appearance on me in a bit of a podcast first. Liang combines a performance of Debussy Reverie with audience-led improvisation at The Hub as part of Edinburgh International Festival this year, inviting people to share their dreams so that she can improvise on the ideas that emerge from it. She does the same here with me. It's only really since recording this that I've come to understand what my recurring dream really is about - in its simplest terms its to do with the panic of time running out. And now, having understood that, it is phenomenally disappointing to realise I've been having this same dream for as long as I can remember. Even so, I've not had it since recording this episode. There is then a therapeutic impact to Hanni's work. More than that, Hanni's candid reflections on the experience of improvisation isn't that far from a theme stitched through recent episodes - leadership qualities, and specifically in this case, the need for and the experience of vulnerability.

Have you ever considered the lighter side of dark matter? Comedy has proved an unexpectedly succesful way to engage people with science - as today's guest knows first-hand. Astrophysicist Catherine Heymans is a Professor at the University of Edinburgh and the current Astronomer Royal for Scotland. She's spent her career studying dark matter and dark energy: the mysterious ingredients that make up an estimated 95% of our cosmos, but which we still know surprisingly little about. Using increasingly powerful telescopes, both on earth and in space, Catherine has spent years building detailed maps of dark matter - even to the extent of capturing rare images of this mysterious cosmic component. On top of her research achievements, she's committed to making science accessible to all; not least by taking an astronomy-themed comedy show to the Edinburgh Festival and beyond. In conversation with Professor Jim Al-Khalili, Catherine talks about her passion for sharing the joys of astrophysics - and reveals how health challenges over the last few years have forced her to readdress her career, her ambitions and even her sense of self... Presented by Jim Al-Khalili Produced by Lucy Taylor

Tonight we mark Women Veterans Day, which is observed annually on June 12 to commemorate the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act into law by President Truman in 1948. This act allowed women to serve permanently in the regular armed forces. To help us honor this anniversary, we invite playwright Ash Singer, whose recent documentary theater play, In Their Footsteps brings to life the true stories of five American women—two military officers and three civilian volunteers—who served during the Vietnam War. Joining Ash will be Ann Kelsey, whose story is dramatized in the play, along with other women featured. Developed from in-depth oral histories, the script captures their poignant, humorous, and harrowing experiences, shedding light on the often-overlooked contributions of women in wartime. The performance immerses audiences in the personal narratives of Ann Kelsey, Judy Jenkins Gaudino, Doris “Lucki” Allen, Jeanne “Sam” Christie, and Lily Adams. Through innovative staging and modular set pieces that transform into various wartime settings—such as bunkers, rooftops, and military vehicles—the play delves into themes of service, resilience, and the psychological toll of war, including issues like sexual harassment and PTSD. Since its initial workshop in New York City in 2017, In Their Footsteps has had an impressive run: 2018: Featured in the East to Edinburgh Festival at 59E59 Theaters in NYC and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. 2019: Performed at the BorderLight International Fringe Festival in Cleveland, Ohio, and at the Women's Overseas Service League annual conference in San Antonio, Texas. 2020–2021: Adapted into a Zoom production and a radio play in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, expanding its reach to schools and veteran organizations. 2021: Presented at the OnStage! Festival in Milan and Rome, Italy. The production is set to return in Fall 2025 with a new run at the Bronx Music Hall, offering an even more immersive experience. Plans are also underway for a 2025–26 tour of New York City schools and a multi-city U.S. tour, aiming to engage diverse audiences through performances, discussions, and educational workshops. In 2020, IVP collaborated with WLIW-FM to produce a radio adaptation of In Their Footsteps, which premiered on NPR station 88.3 WLIW-FM Long Island. This adaptation, titled “Revisiting ‘In Their Footsteps' in Honor of Dr. ‘Lucki' Allen,” earned a 2025 Gracie Award for Excellence in Radio Programming. The Gracie Awards, presented by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, honor exemplary programming created by, for, and about women. The radio play features authentic soundscapes and the voices of the original women, providing listeners with an intimate and powerful portrayal of their experiences. It serves as a testament to the enduring impact of these women's stories and the importance of preserving their legacy through various media. For more information or to listen to the radio play, visit WLIW-FM's website. We're grateful to UPMC for Life for sponsoring this event!
