This week we are sitting down and chatting with Tour Manager Victoria Haft and Photographer/Videographer Ellie White of Taylor Acorn's team! We jump into how we all met and know each other and how our connections brought us all together. Lor asks Ellie and Victoria about the one show that put the idea of working on the road with artists into their minds and what their first tour or show that they actually worked on was. We talk about the need to decompress after being on the road and what that does to you physically and mentally and how the connections you make on the road always seem to pop back up when you least expect it. Ellie and Victoria share some of their favorite memories of this tour run, how being close to an artist can pull you into a genre that you may never have been a huge fan of before, and what artists they are currently listening to right now. Listen in on our chaotic and fun talk as we dive into everything tour life and working behind the scenes in the industry on this week's episode of Beyond the Barricade! ----------------------Follow Victoria and EllieVictoria: https://www.instagram.com/victoriahaft Ellie: https://www.instagram.com/wild.child.productions ----------------------Follow All Things Backing The Barricade:https://www.backingthebarricade.com/https://www.instagram.com/backingthebarricade/https://www.tiktok.com/@backingthebarricade----------------------Follow Madi:https://www.instagram.com/earthtomadison/Follow Lor:https://www.instagram.com/lorealmichele/----------------------

Summary In this episode, Evan and Jonathan are joined by Ellie White to discuss the accessibility of medical devices, specifically insulin pumps and glucose monitors. Ellie shares her experience managing type 1 diabetes and the challenges she faces with the current lack of accessibility in these devices. They also discuss the importance of advocacy and legislation to improve accessibility in medical devices. The conversation concludes with a fun segment on the Sandwich of the Week. Takeaways Medical devices such as insulin pumps and glucose monitors often lack accessibility features, making it difficult for individuals with visual impairments to manage their conditions. Advocacy and legislation, such as the Medical Device Non-Visual Accessibility Act, are crucial in pushing for improved accessibility in medical devices. Ideally, accessible medical devices should have standalone features with tactile buttons or voice prompts, rather than relying solely on smartphone apps. The accessibility of medical devices can greatly impact the quality of life for individuals with visual impairments, and it is important for manufacturers to prioritize inclusivity. But when she is diagnosed with breast cancer she is forced to start addressing her past, a life she hasn't told Claire or anyone about, a New York life, Emily's life; a mess of a failed marriage, an affair and an accidental pregnancy that saw Emily fake her death post-9/11 and run away to LA. In the fourth Death by Chocolate Mystery by the bestselling author of the Home Repair is Homicide series, Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree and Ellie White are fired up for Eastport, Maine's Annual Cookie Baking Contest. But when a cunning killer and a devastating fire threaten to ravage the quaint island town, Jake and Ellie must dip into another homemade homicide investigation before all they love goes up in smoke...As co-owners of Eastport's beloved waterfront bakery, The Chocolate Moose, Jake and Ellie know their customers expect them to cream the competition. But they're really just in it for fun, hoping to get Jake's daughter-in-law baking again. Those plans collapse when fearsome local curmudgeon Alvin Carter is murdered, and every crumb of evidence points to Tiptree family friend—and all-around sweet guy—Billy Breyer. Billy's sisters beg Jake and Ellie to prove his innocence. After all, lots of folks had gone sour on Alvin—the only thing the retired lawyer liked better than bilking widows was swindling orphans, and several victims of his long-ago schemes still lived in Eastport. But just as the ladies begin sifting through the suspects, a series of grass fires blaze across the island, cutting off access to the mainland. Could someone be trying to hide the truth about Alvin's murder? Now, Jake and Ellie will need all their courage—and an extra dash of that down-east Maine stubbornness—to sniff out the real killer before anyone else gets burned...Sarah Graves is the USA Today bestselling author of the Death by Chocolate Mysteries, the Home Repair is Homicide Mystery Series, and the Lizzie Snow suspense novels. Much like Jake Tiptree, the sleuth who stars in her cozy mysteries, she lives in a 200-year-old house in Eastport, Maine. When she's not cooking or baking something delectable (or writing about it) she tends a huge garden or shovels snow, depending upon the season.

Producer/Host: Natalie Springuel The Maine Fisherman’s Forum is an annual event that brings together thousands of people who are connected to Maine’s fishing industry. Like so many events, the 2021 Fisherman’s Forum was cancelled due to COVID, but the stories and voices from the fishing industry persist! For this month’s episode of Coastal Conversations, our stellar team of student production assistants from College of the Atlantic sifted through the archives of 60+ interviews collected at past Maine Fishermen’s Forum. They found some gems, including the voices of fishermen, legislators, and scientists, reflecting on ecosystem-based fisheries management, ecological knowledge gleaned from years at sea, and life in fishing communities. Today’s show was assembled by our student production assistants who explain they wanted this show “to explore the lives of people deeply connected to the water, and weave together an image of Maine’s marine ecosystem including the ocean, the fish, and the humans that inhabit it. We want to share the tremendous amount of knowledge and experience fishermen have about the ecosystems they work within.” Thanks to Camden Hunt, Ela Keegan and Ellie White of College of the Atlantic for your excellent radio production assistance, and Galen Koch of The First Coast for your tireless guidance. Note: A few of the voices featured on today’s episode may sound familiar to our listeners but the show in its entirety is new. Voices of the Maine Fishermen’s Forum interviews were collected at the 2018 and 2019 Maine Fishermen’s Forum in Rockland Maine by volunteers, staff and students from The First Coast, Maine Sea Grant, College of the Atlantic and Island Institute. All the interviews on today’s show are part of the Voices of the Maine Fishermen’s Forum Collection which can be found on The First Coast website and at NOAA Fisheries Voices Oral History Archives. Today’s featured voices include the following (please note that affiliations may have changed since the time of interview): Paul Anderson, Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries, Stonington Herbert (Herb) Carter Jr., commercial shellfish harvester, Deer Isle Philip Conkling, co-founder and former president, Island Institute Parker Gassett, University of Maine graduate student Dan Harriman, fisherman who operates Maine’s last mackerel weir in Cape Elizabeth Pat Shepard, Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries, Stonington Angus King, United States Senator from Brunswick Edwin McKie, lobsterman, Prince Edward Island, Canada Dave Cousens, lobsterman, South Thomaston Avery Waterman, lobsterman, North Haven Marcia Beal Brazier, fisherman’s wife, Ogunquit About the host: Natalie Springuel has hosted Coastal Conversation’s since 2015, with support from the University of Maine Sea Grant where she has served as a marine extension associate for 20 years. This week, host Jesse David Fox sits down with Jamie Demetriou, the creator/writer/star of the acclaimed British comedy, Stath Lets Flats.   During the summer, Stath Lets Flats took home the Best Scripted Comedy award at the BAFTAs, beating out Catastrophe, Derry Girls, and even Fleabag. To translate the title to American English, Stath is Jamie’s character’s name and “lets flats” means leases apartments. That’s what the show’s about - a English-Greek idiot working at his family’s leasing agency.   The scene we play comes from season 2, episode 5, in which Stath goes on a double date with his sister, Sophie (played by Jamie’s real life sister, Natasia). Sophie brings her new boyfriend, Cem (David Mumeni). Stath asked Sophie’s roommate/music and dance partner, Katia (played by Natasia’s real life comedy partner, Ellie White), who said no, but showed up anyway. When she said no, Stath invited his best friend Al (Al Roberts), but the only problem is Al and Sophie secretly love each other. Comedy ensues!  You can watch Stath Lets Flats on HBO Max. While the world has gone into lockdown and economies have crashed, one type of business has been seeing double-digit growth – direct selling. Independent consultants for big names such as Body Shop at Home, Forever Living, Avon, Usborne Books at Home and Arbonne have been reporting huge increases in sales and recruitment in response to regular shops closing their doors. But while proponents of ‘multi-level marketing’ or ‘direct to consumer’ selling say it provides an opportunity for women to earn money on their own terms, critics say that the business model sits precariously close to being a pyramid scheme. So what do women need to know? Jenni talks to Susannah Schofield, the DG of the Direct Selling Association; Hannah Martin of the Talented Ladies Club; and Clare from Hertfordshire, who talks about her experience of working in the industry. Meg Learmonth was just 18 when she was appointed drummer for the Stormzy collaborator Mura Masa. She describes how drumming was “love at first hit”, the tale behind her broken foot, touring before lockdown and her part in a 21 day drumming marathon to raise money for the NHS. Meg's 12 hour drumming shift is being streamed this Thursday, 4th June. What is it like coping with lockdown while living with an eating disorder? For today’s Woman’s Hour Corona Diaries, listener Jennie talks about her experience – including how being forced to stay at home has led to her making positive steps towards recovery. The Other One is new comedy on BBC1. It’s all about a girl called Catherine Walcott. And another girl called Catherine Walcott. Half-sisters who had no idea the other existed until their father died. Jenni talks to its creator Holly Walsh and one of the stars taking on the role of Catherine - Ellie White.
