Mickey-Jo Theatre Reviews

One of the shows Mickey-Jo recently saw during his recent two week trip to New York was SUFFS, the brand new Musical currently playing at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway. This is Mickey-Jo's ★★★★★ review of the musical. Suffs, the six-time Tony Award-nominated musical from Shaina Taub about the lives and legacies of unsung changemakers in the women's suffrage movement of 1920, is marching onto Broadway with producers Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai. Just about century ago, the Nineteenth Amendment secured the voting rights of some women, largely thanks to key figures of the women's suffrage movement: Inez Milholland, Ida B. Wells, and Alice Paul, to name a few. However, this movement was not without its faults. With an honest, 21st-century lens, the Suffs musical examines both the crucial building blocks and the cracks in the foundation of the women's suffrage movement through the women that pioneered it. With a book and score by fast-rising composer Shaina Taub (also known for collaborating with Elton John on The Devil Wears Prada musical), Suffs off Broadway brings forth an exciting new voice in musical theatre. Taub now makes her Broadway debut after winning the 2014 recipient of the esteemed Jonathan Larson Award and earning acclaim with her work composing and starring in the Public's Twelfth Night and As You Like It musical adaptations. Tony Award nominee and two-time Obie Award winner Leigh Silverman (Violet) directs Suffs on Broadway. Alongside Taub in the cast is Tony Award winner Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn. Rounding out the company are Hawley Gould as the Alternate for Alice Paul, Jaygee Macapugay as Mollie Hay, and Laila Drew as Phyllis Terrell/Robin. The ensemble will feature Dana Costello as well as Jenna Bainbridge, Monica Tulia Ramirez, and Ada Westfall making their Broadway debuts. The cast will also include Christine Heesun Hwang, Kirsten Scott , Housso Semon , and D'Kaylah Unique Whitley. • 00:00 | introduction 02:14 | overview / synopsis 07:02 | the material 15:38 | performances • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. Mike Isaacson, Currently in his ninth season and only the third person to hold this position in The Muny's 103-year history. To date, he has produced 56 Muny shows, 23 of which had never been on the Muny stage before. He has collaborated at The Muny with many Tony award winners and breakthrough talents, including Christian Borle, Colin Donnell, Marcia Milgrom Dodge, Gary Griffin, Heather Headley, Jennifer Holliday, Denis Jones, Laura Michelle Kelly, Dan Knecht- ges, Beth Leavel, Norm Lewis, Beth Malone, Kathleen Marshall, Patti Murin, Josh Rhodes, Emily Skinner and Ken Page. The Riverfront Times wrote, “Under the leadership of executive producer Mike Isaacson, the quality of Muny productions rose like the proverbial phoenix.” The St. Louis Post-Dispatch named him “Theatre Artist of the Year,” noting that by “staging one impressive production after another, he made The Muny simultaneously hip and – be- lieve it – important to our community.” During Isaacson's tenure, The Muny has produced new developmental productions of Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn, Lerner and Loewe's Paint Your Wagon and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. During its record-breaking 100th season, The Muny became the first theatre in the world to produce the legendary Jerome Robbins' Broadway, doing unprecedented archival work on both the artistic and business side. During that same season, The Muny produced the U.S. regional premiere of Jersey Boys. Isaacson has changed the look and feel of a Muny production, overseeing a transformation in every aspect of pro- duction that culminated in 2019 with the arrival of the theatre's extraordinary James S. Mc- Donnell stage, a state-of-the art stage house that includes revolutionary LED technology, automated sets and a host of other innovations. During the summer of 2020, when The Muny was closed due to COVID-19, Mike produced and created The Muny 2020 Variety Hour Live!, an online show that reached more than a worldwide audience of over 400,000.   With Kristin Caskey, Isaacson has produced more than 23 Broadway musicals and plays, national tours, off-Broadway and London productions. All told, his productions have received more than 122 Tony nominations and 34 Tony Awards. Last year, he produced the highly ac- claimed David Byrne's American Utopia, which made every major “Top 10” list, and became a highly acclaimed film by Spike Lee on HBO, for which he also served as an executive produc- er. Just as the COVID-19 shutdown of Broadway began, he was awaiting the first preview of Neil Simon's Plaza Suite, starring Mathew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker.   Also, during the shutdown, Isaacson served as a supporting producer of the acclaimed re- vival of The Unsinkable Molly Brown at New York's Transport Group. Other career highlights include: Fun Home (2015 Tony Award, Best Musical; 2018 Olivier nominee for Best Musical), Legally Blonde the Musical (2011 Olivier Award, Best Musical), Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002 Tony Award, Best Musical), Red (2010 Tony Award, Best Play), The Humans (2016 Tony Award, Best Play), If/Then, starring Idina Menzel, Lanford Wilson's Burn This, starring Adam Driver and Kerri Russell (2019 Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Play), Bring It On: The Musical (2013 Tony nomination for Best Musical), A Doll's House 2 (2017 Tony nomination for Best Play), You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1999 Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical), The Seagull, starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard, Caroline, or Change (Tony nomination for Best Musical); One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (2001 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play) and Death of a Salesman (1999 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play). For the Independent Presenters Network, Isaacson served as producer for Spamalot (2005 Tony Award, Best Musical), Ragtime (revival) and The Color Purple (2006 Tony nomination for Best Musical).   He has received the St. Louis Arts and Education Council's Award for Excellence in the Arts and has been awarded The Broadway League's and Theatre Development Fund's Commercial Theater Institute “Robert Whitehead” Award for excellence in producing. He has served on the board of governors and executive committee of The Broadway League and received the Samuel J. L'Hommedieu Award. Alice Ripley is one of the heavyweights of American Musical Theatre. A Tony winner for her star-turn as Diana in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical “Next to Normal,” Alice Ripley is known world-wide for showstopping roles, including those in Side Show (for which she was also Tony nominated, alongside Emily Skinner), The Rocky Horror Show, The Who’s Tommy, Les Miserables, James Joyce’s The Dead, Sunset Boulevard, and American Psycho. She is here today promoting a one-woman monologue show, "The Pink Unicorn," at The Cell, a 60-seat venue in Chelsea. In “The Pink Unicorn,” from Out of the Box Theatrics, Alice plays Trisha Lee, a Christian widow in Texas whose world is shaken when her 14-year-old child, Jolene, announces that they are not in fact female but instead genderqueer, changing their name to Jo, launching a Gay/Straight alliance, and introducing their mom to the concept of gender-neutral pronouns. Trisha is totally thrown for a loop, hurled out of her comfort zone — and the show takes all of us though the complex journey of navigating the conservative community as well as her own biases, and the challenges of loving and accepting a child who defies expectations in service of being themselves. To quote Hunter Bell & Jeff Bowen’s quirky, brilliant musical [title of show]: ALICE RIPLEY, SHE’S FIERCE!

A Southern California native, Emily’s acting career started somewhat by accident when at the age of seven, an acting teacher took notice of her talent and set up an appointment for her to meet with a friend of his who happened to be an agent. She was signed by the agency and has been acting ever since. Actress Lilia Buckingham joined the conversation as well making for a lively chat. From her early guest star roles on Numb3rs, CSI, Criminal Minds, Rizzoli and Isles, Shake It Up, Austin and Ally, Sam and Cat, and the Mindy Project to the role of ‘Amber’ on Disney’s Andi Mack and ‘Diana’ on Brat’s Total Eclipse, Emily has worked continuously and has built an impressive resume’. HoLy PiPeRoNi! The #HuMoNGoID new Disney Channel show Andi Mack ToTaLLy crushes the field! Terry Minsky returns to Disney for the first time since Lizzy McGuire (which is in our very top tween shows of all time) and we’ve got Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi), Asher Dovangel (Jonah Beck), Joshua Rush (Cyrus), Sofia Wylie (Buffy) AND Emily Skinner (Amber) here to talk boys, girls, characters, crushes and on vs. off-screen chemistry! THIS is precisely what we’ve been hoping to see from Disney Channel. Background? OK! Disney and Nick have long been avoiding what’s called “low concept” shows (see this article on adamfeinsilver.com). Development execs told us following pitch meetings for a show we’re working on (hint) that they only want “high concept” and didn’t want shows with “kids at school or at home.” Weird? YES! We’ve listened to you guys for like…over 9 years…and good low concept shows always work (i.e. Lizzie McGuire, Even Stevens, Girl Meets World!) Maybe it took Terry Minsky to get things back on track. Hmmmm!? Anyway, Andi Mack (aka Andiland) is AwEsOmE! In addition to Terri Minsky, Michelle Manning is on board! Michelle is behind Teen Beach Movie 2 and Disney’s remix of Adventures in Babysitting! So, we had some special insight (i.e.. the original script) into what was coming…and saw some changes that made the show a fit for Disney. Somehow, they kept all the magic of the original (kept it real) and still made it Disney-style. Let us know if you want us to go into techie details (or if you’ve read this far into the description). So, we’re NOT giving away the big secret sauce at the end of episode 1! You have to watch! As for why Bex is missing from interview, Lilan Bowden cut out before our round of interviews! We’ve already reached out…and hopefully we’ll be seeing Bex again soon (Piper does have a picture!

We're OBSESSED with Emily Skinner and we FINALLY get to meet her!! Emily made her Broadway debut in 1997 in the original Broadway cast of "Jeckyll & Hyde." Less than a year later she originated the role of Daisy Hilton in "Side Show." She was next seen in "James Joyce's The Dead" before originating the role of Vicki Nichols in "The Full Monty." She was most recently seen on Broadway in "Billy Ellliot: The Musical" where she was hand picked by director Stephen Daldry to play the role of Mrs. Wikinson. She's amazing and we love her to pieces.

SURPRISE EPISODE! Happy Friday, Theater People! We're so excited to bring you this mini bonus episode featuring Broadway powerhouses Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley! Alice and Emily first met in 1998 when they were cast as the conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton in the 1998 production of Side Show. Though they'd each go on to have separate thriving careers, they joined forces for the critically acclaimed albums Duets and Unsuspecting Hearts. Now they're back with a brand new album Unattached, from Broadway Records. It was such a thrill to get to interview them both at the same time! Enjoy!

Episode #14: Well, it was only a matter of time before I dragged my friend Emily Skinner onto this podcast. Emily has all my favorite actor-ingredients: a boundless and beautiful voice, a major sense of humor, fearlessness, creativity, intelligence, and above all, a ton of heart. She's given some of the most memorable performances on Broadway in recent years: Vicki in The Full Monty, Mary Jane in The Dead, Kitty in Lincon Center's production of Dinner at Eight, and of course, as Siamese twin, Daisy Hilton, in Side Show, a performance which earned her a Tony nomination for Best Actress. This doesn't even touch on her appearances Off-Broadway, at the Kennedy Center, in the Encores Series productions, and at various regional theatres across the land. And she always manages to deliver a show-stopping or heart-breaking or gut-busting or all-of-the-above performance. I'm so excited to feature her on this podcast singing "The Philosopher,", my setting of the Edna St. Vincent Millay poem of the same name. Recorded 3/14/06.Need more Emily Skinner in your diet? Go see her at the 92nd Street Y from April 8-10 in the concert, Other People's Lyrics. Or take a trip to DC in June for what promises to be a great Mame, with Emily as "Gooch."Or maybe you need some CDs! There's her solo CD, Emily Skinner, there are her duet CDs with Side Show co-star, Alice Ripley: Duets and Unsuspecting Hearts, as well as performances on the following show/concert CDs: Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens, Dreamgirls in Concert, and My Life with Albertine. But wait! There's more! She directs: Broadway by the Year - 1956 on April 3, tickets at Ticketmaster. And she's narrated a book on tape! Jennifer Weiner's Goodnight, Nobody. You can listen to it as you're driving to DC to see Mame!
