Why did Kim Kardashian pay a $1.2 million penalty for promoting crypto? Welcome to the Cryptohunt Jam, where we spend one minute a day to explain crypto. In plain English. My name is Christian Byza, Co-Founder of Cryptohunt.it and I am your host of this daily show. Have you heard the news that Kim Kardashian had to pay a whopping $1.2 million (!) dollar penalty for promoting a crypto token in one of her social posts? Here's what happened: Kardashian had been paid $250,000 for a single post about a token called EthereumMax. Not a bad payday if you ask us. But here's the problem: She didn't tell anyone that it was a promotional post, and instead suggested that friends told her about it. Easy to see how people could have thought they stumbled into the next big thing, now that Kardashian is talking about it. But because celebrities have large social media followings, there are strict rules on labeling these kinds of posts for what they are: blatant ads. The SEC, which controls how financial assets are treated in the US didn't think Kardashian followed those - and the fact that she paid a $1.25 million dollar penalty for a $250,000 post suggests that she was well aware and just wanted this to go away. This story is as old as the proverbial snake oil and all too common in the crypto world. A made-up crypto currency enlists celebrities to prompte it, unknowing users buy into it, the price goes up, and the scammers dump their holdings for a profit. So, how do you know what project is legitimate? Use common sense and follow a few simple rules: If it smells rotten, it probably is. Never heard of something and suddenly a busy celebrity magically discovered it? Red flags everywhere. And even more important: Always do your independent research - once you read up on a token you'll spot a bad one from a mile away. Think all the resources you can find are dry and technical though? Well - we have great news… You probably saw it coming, but give Cryptohunt a try at www.cryptohunt.it. We'll brake it down in really easy to understand terms. Oh, and what about that EthereumMax token she promoted? It was a scam, it had nothing to do with Ethereum, and had no utility. The only thing worth remembering: it has lost over 98% of its value since Kim Kardashian posted about it. Disclaimer: This podcast references our opinion and is for information purposes only. During the Coperni show at Paris Fashion Week, Bella Hadid walked to the middle of the runway - wearing only a G-string & holding her breasts for two men to spray her body with what appeared to be white paint. Sure, there were immediate connections to another moment in fashion history: Alexander McQueen's SS 1999 show, when Shalom Harlow's white dress was spray-painted by robots. It looked similar, but the result was very different. Coperni's design took about 15 minutes to create, but as the men finished spraying on the dress, a woman came to cut a slit in the sides and pulled down sleeves to make an off-the-shoulder look. As she walked away, the dress moved with her. Coperni is a highly skilled fashion house, with craftsmen and women from the same ateliers as Balenciaga and Chanel but more known for creating ready to wear runway pieces rather than couture. A blast from fashion past, but is this performative fashion week game a chase for shareable content? Kim Kardashian has been fined $1.26 million to settle allegations from the Securities and Exchange Commission after she broke US rules by sharing a paid post to her 331 million followers on Instagram on a crypto token company (EthereumMax) without disclosing that she was paid and how much she was paid for the promotion ($250,000). We both understand from working in branding how important upholding regulations in influencer marketing is and how this example should set a standard on a larger scale to others who rely on social media for their income. Tesla boss Elon Musk presented their upgraded humanoid robot 'Optimus' at the latest Tesla 2022 AI Day but critics were unimpressed. The humanoid merely waved to the audience and raised its knees in performance. We ask why would you make a robot like a human when the real value comes from creating something with technology that humans can't do. Critics are as unimpressed with this innovation as we are. Why is Elon working on this at all?

Kim Kardashian's in trouble with Uncle Sam! Last year, Kim endorsed crypto asset security EthereumMax on her Insta, pushing the risky token to her hundreds of millions of followers. Since then, EMAX has plummeted, and the SEC brought charges against Kim for failing to tell her followers that she was paid a cool quarter million bucks to promote the crashed crypto. As a way to settle the charges with the Feds, Kim has agreed to fork over $1.26 million in penalties. But for billionaire Kimmy, a million plus is really just chump change, and it looks like this won't make a dent in her powerful star status or affect her career. Kim Kardashian has been fined $1.25 million for promoting cryptocurrency on social media. Could Other A-Listers Be Charged?

Kim Kardashian agreed to pay a massive fine on Monday for failing to disclose that she was paid to promote the EthereumMax cryptocurrency. Kardashian agreed to pay the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) $1.26 million in penalties to settle charges that she illegally promoted crypto tokens on her Instagram account, inviting her 328 million followers to invest. "This is not financial advice," Kardashian wrote on Instagram in June 2021. "However, I'd like to share what my friends just told me about the EthereumMax token!" Among the hashtags used was "#ad," but the post also included a link to EthereumMax's website, which detailed how to purchase the digital tokens. Kardashian faces a massive fine On Monday, the SEC announced the charges against the social media sensation. According to the SEC's order, Kardashian failed to disclose that she was paid $250,000 to publish a post about EMAX tokens on her Instagram account. She agreed to settle the charges, pay $1.26 million in penalties, disgorgement, and interest, and cooperate with the ongoing investigation of the Commission. "This case serves as a reminder that just because celebrities or influencers endorse investment opportunities, including crypto asset securities, that doesn't mean those investment products are right for all investors," SEC Chair Gary Gensler said. "We encourage investors to consider the potential risks and opportunities of an investment in light of their own financial goals." Furthermore, Gensler stated that the case should serve as a reminder to celebrities and others that the law requires them to disclose when and how much they are paid to promote investing in securities to the public. Some experts believe Kardashian may have tried to argue that the "#ad" was sufficient to satisfy the SEC's rules, but the SEC noted in its filing against the influencer that the Securities Act explicitly requires the disclosure of the amount received for the publicity of a security. Kardashian made no mention of being paid $250,000 to promote the EMAX tokens in her post. "Kim Kardashian isn't the only celebrity to get into cryptocurrency trouble," explained Pund-IT technology analyst Charles King via email. "In 2018, boxer Floyd Mayweather and music producer DJ Khaled paid $600,000 and $150,000 in SEC fines for failing to disclose fees they were paid for endorsing Centra Tech, respectively," King continued. Social Media Investment Tips The SEC actually encourages investors to conduct their own research and discourages anyone from relying on paid celebrity endorsements. Nonetheless, many young investors today continue to look to social media, particularly influencers on the platforms, for sound financial advice. According to a 2021 CreditCards.com survey, approximately 52% of millennials and Generation Z received financial advice from social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, and found the advice to be trustworthy. The SEC may target other influencers and celebrities who have failed to disclose that they were paid to promote cryptocurrency, and Kardashian may be the first, but not the last, to face SEC scrutiny and fines. "Given her high public profile, Kim Kardashian's $1.26M fine could be evidence that the SEC is also targeting crypto-promoting celebrities like Tom Brady and Matt Damon," he added. "While the SEC fine is unlikely to have a significant financial impact on Kardashian, investors are reportedly suing her and Mayweather for failing to disclose the payments they received from EthereumMax." Since Kardashian's promotion, the EMAX cryptocurrency has lost 95% of its value. As a result, even if many of the celebrities who promoted crypto on social media do not face SEC scrutiny, it is likely that few will continue to promote digital currencies in the future. "Those are risks that sensible people, including celebrities, would prefer to avoid," King said, adding, "especially given Kardashian's relatively paltry $250k for her endorsement."

A class action lawsuit filed last Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California accuses EthereumMax and its celebrity promoters of working together to artificially inflate the price of the token by making “false or misleading statements” in social media posts. Kardashian caused a stir last year when she made an Instagram post promoting the EthereumMax token. “Are you guys into crypto????” Kardashian wrote. “This is not financial advice but sharing what my friends just told me about the Ethereum Max token!” Kardashian included the hashtag #ad in the message, suggesting she was paid to promote it. It's not clear if Kardashian was paid by EthereumMax, though estimates have placed her fee per sponsored Instagram post in the $500,000 to $1 million range.
