“Where have you Boyz been? How bout getting back in the studio?” Yes we have been getting asked that regularly as you might expect. Whenever we're together or on our own and moving around the Southside of the city with broad shoulders meeting with folks who follow the Boyz' HAB Podcast, that question inevitably comes up. Well, honestly, we Boyz have just been living and doing our thing. Unfortunately, our thing has not included stops by the Homan Studio for some recording time in quite some time. That is until now. Fortunately, the Homan Studio remains a pretty active place. Other recording artists and projects continue to occupy time in the studio whether or not we Boyz can be found. With hours of raw conversation still in the can from prior recording sessions and now new studio time scheduled; the Boyz have rediscovered that sometimes time away produces delicious experiences that definitely fuel creative conversations. In today's episode of Dreams Not Memes I speak to Jason/Tsung-Yuan Lee. Jason is a Taiwanese classical/jazz/world music violinist, multi-instrumentalist (piano, bass, guitar, drum, erhu, cello), composer, sound designer and an electronic musician. In 2017 Jason appeared and composed music for the film “Accommodation”. He also appeared on Dream Theater's “Along for the Ride” tour and live released DVD “Breaking The Fourth Wall”. In 2015, Jason Lee toured in China with his Chinese/Jazz fusion quartet for the first time and was interviewed by Huaxia Magazine as the theme of the month- “The rising star of the music world”. And later on, went on a sold-out tour with Yo-Yo Ma's silkroad Ensemble branch project in 2018. In 2017, Tsung-Yuan join The Boulanger Lab as a musical software developer, directed by the creator of Csound computer language, Dr. Richard Boulanger. During 2018-2020 Jason was the co-leader of string revolution funk/rock band “2 Birds Band”, the great modern violin pioneer Jean-Luc Ponty has once commented on the band, “I'm glad to see young compatriots at a level that I rarely hear!”. The band is a unique strings-based ensemble with a rhythm section that explores the boundaries of violin and cello through different styles of music. Fusing classical tradition and contemporary styles, the band presents a new way of approaching strings with a sound both cultured and groovy. It has been performing and teaching clinics in Boston, New York, Toronto and France. The band has released 3 albums First Flight (2015), For Lack Of A Better World (2016) and String Groover (2017). Through recent years, Tsung-Yuan (Jason) Lee has worked and performed with many renowned musicians from modern jazz innovators such as, 4-time Grammy winner Terence Blanchard; 2-time Grammy winner Jacob Collier; modern drummer Jojo Mayer; Mark Guiliana, modern guitarist David Fiuczynski, to King of Chinese Pop Lee Hom Wang; to classical musicians including 4-time grammy winner Eugene Friesen; grammy-winning Yo-Yo Ma's Silkroad Ensemble, to Hollywood Oscar nominated composer AR Rahma, progressive rock band Dream Theater; electronic music composer Robert Rich; oud master Simon Shaheen and suona master Yazhi Guo. In our conversation, Jason and I speak about his experiences with playing the violin and exploring his love for music and how he has been able to work on music in New York and Taiwan. 076: Eugene FriesenGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, February 24 of 2021 music is not content. It’s connection.I had a crazy performance anxiety dream the other night. In the dream I’m famous enough to get invited to do crazy random things on stage, and they offer me a gig to play Romeo at an outdoor Shakespeare production of Romeo And Juliet. Of course I take it, even though I have no business doing something like that.Meanwhile, also in the dream I’m in the process of buying an old apartment building. So the bulk of the dream is spent visiting the site and going over minutiae like how old the wooden bannisters are and what kind of plumbing needs to be ripped out and what does the landmark commission have to say… I don’t do a single rehearsal for the play.Gig day rolls around and we’re still checking out the property with different real estate agents and managers. I’m riding around in the back of the car - the folks I’m with are completely oblivious to my having taken on a monumental role and they’re just talking about it like I’m going to play songs at a bar or something. Like “that’s so cool that you’re doing this thing tonight”. Meanwhile it dawns on me that I don’t even know a single one of my lines, haven’t even met the cast or the director. They drop me off in front, like half an hour before curtain and I realize that I have to find a sub. No matter what, even though it’s my name on the marquee. I am not gonna be that guy who got dropped right into a Shakespeare play with zero prep. I start looking around and see Willem Dafoe on his way in. We’re not friends in my dream either but he recognizes me and treats me like a friend because it’s like “my big night”. Yeah right.I tell him the situation and offer him the chance to play Romeo at a moments notice. He says thanks, probably not but he might know somebody and starts calling around. I see the real estate agents walking in, start to lose my s**t and…that’s the moment I woke up.Whew.What a fun one! Some ego, some anxiety, a bunch of hubris and the walls all closing in. Maybe it ended well, I don’t know. We’d all like to get bailed out by a superstar at some point in our lives. I’m just so glad it wasn’t real because I do not belong anywhere near a Shakespeare stage.Meanwhile, today on the show:Four-time Grammy Award-winner Eugene Friesen is active internationally as a concert and recording artist, composer, conductor and teacher. Eugene has worked and recorded with such diverse artists as Dave Brubeck, Martin Sexton, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Dar Williams, Will Ackerman, and Dream Theater. Eugene's passion for improvised music has been featured in concerts all over the world with the Paul Winter Consort and with Trio Globo (which is Eugene, Howard Levy and Glen Velez). He appeared on "A Prairie Home Companion" playing with superstar soprano Renée Fleming and has performed as a soloist at the International Cello Festival in Manchester, England; the World Cello Congress in Baltimore, Maryland; and the Rio International Cello Encounter in Rio de Janeiro. He’s a world renowned teacher of new cello techniques and improvisation in the United States, Asia, Europe, Egypt, and South America. Recording credits include five albums of original music, more than 30 CDs with the Paul Winter Consort, and hundreds of tracks featuring his rapturous cello playing on instrumental albums, films, and television scores. Eugene is an artist-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, and on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. It’s an honor to have him on the show.Eugene was one of the very first cellists I ever saw on stage when I was a kid, someone who liberated us from the idea that we had to stay in line and only play the notes on a page with pre-prescribed intent and a general lack of flavor or modern relevance. He took his classical education and helped the cello grow into the modern musical landscape. None of us would be anywhere without people like him. Quick ask: if you believe this show deserves a wider audience, please tell a friend:Now let’s talk to Eugene![Featured tracks: “Shadowplay” and “First Ride” from The Essential Collection]Press PLAY above to hear my conversation with Eugene Friesen.Or subscribe in your podcast app: Apple Podcasts - Spotify- Stitcher - TuneIn - Overcast - PocketcastThanks so much for listening to Play It Like It’s Music. If you believe this show deserves a wider audience in 2021, please tell a friend:Follow me on twitter @trevorexter and talk to me on there if you have thoughts about the show. We're all contending with a mutating professional landscape, jacked revenue streams, a catastrophic global pandemic and plenty of other noise out here. But you gotta keep playing. We don't draw any lines here between scenes or styles. As always, thank you for listening and remember to play it like its music. You can check out my NEW instrumental record on bandcamp, and I hope you will. Ep #91 with Loire Cotler, rhythm vocalist. Loire Cotler has a unique way of singing that draws on the ancient Konokol tradition of Indian vocalization that is used in the training of percussionists. She also combines that style with many other influences creating a true World Fusion of sound. She has a degree in Music Therapy and works with film composer Hans Zimmer. Her new CD “18 Wings” is a re-imagining of jazz standards and is a collaboration with World Fusion trailblazers Trio Globo (Howard Levy, Eugene Friesen and Glen Velez).

Beautiful day in New York today. In this edition:A little melody. An oldie swipe. An awesome invitation for the cellists.[I promise I’m just keeping an eye on the group here. Not trying to look colonial or anything.]What is hip?Classic song, timeless message. Except maybe for the word "hip".But I propose that the older that word gets, the better (as in hipper) it gets.Because it was always pointing to the slipperiest, most ephemeral thing.Hipness has always been for the kids, who think they can hide from their own unexpressed fear of death and obscurity behind an endless string of new words.I was more lost than hip when I was young. I thought I wanted hipness (maybe by some other name I can’t remember), but it was worthiness, participation and delight I wanted.Things much less slippery.Posolutely....Meet me in Vermont! This is Eugene Friesen, a hero of mine since childhood and you can see why. The guy burns it down on the cello in all kinds of ways:I just surprised myself by signing up to attend his Creative Cello Workshop in Vermont next month, and apparently it surprised him too. He wrote, "You're an accomplished solo artist already, what are you hoping to get from the weekend?" and I replied that "with all that I’ve been up to musically and production-wise, I have not been as connected to other cellists as I want to be." Seriously, I’ve been wanting to tear myself away and come up there for a while. So I'm gonna do it. If you are a cellist, come join in!I didn't bend his ear at length inre my deeper emotional/spiritual reasons for wanting to gather in community with creative cellists, as they are likely similar to all of ours. I've had a lot going on as usual, and the cello remains my steadiest friend through it all.Read more here and sign up if you want to come join us! Thank you for reading and subscribing.I appreciate you. Big love to your ears,Trevor...If you appreciate my work, it’s in these other places too. Eugene Friesen is a cellist who has performed as a member of the Paul Winter Consort for many years often exploring the musical possibilities of playing inside sacred spaces such as the Grand Canyon and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine or accompanying animals such as whales and wolves. A four-time Grammy award-winner, he teaches at the Berklee School of Music in Boston where I interviewed him in 2017.

Ron Sikes has been a band director in Jefferson County Missouri for 19 years and a MMEA Past Jazz Vice President. In many ways, Ron embodies the growth mindset and in this episode he discusses his relentless pursuit of personal growth in all that he does. Topics: Ron’s background growing up and the winding road that he took to becoming a music teacher and music professional. Thoughts about jazz education, tips for teaching improvisation, and how those experiences led to Ron composing music for his own band and eventually those around him. The importance of taking private lessons on instruments that you don’t know well and advice for bartering your knowledge in exchange for those of another musician. Working with other composers, especially Gary Gackstatter (Episode 12) and the value that these collaborations bring to his students and the audience. Podremos escuchar piezas de Jean-Michel Jarre, Michael Jones & David Darling, Eugene Friesen, Peter Kater, Claude Bolling & Jean-Pierre Rampal, Josh Alexander, Nor Dar, Abaton, Denean, Alex Tiuniaev, Bryce Dessner & Kronos Quartet, Max Richter, Kronos Quartet, Kimmo Pohjonen & Samuli Kosminen y Alice Sara Ott.
Fiona Joy poured her heart and soul into Signature – Synchronicity, a New Age album submitted to the 59th Grammy Awards for consideration. You can listen on: http://www.thebcompany.com/fionajoy-fyc.html. Or a Soundcloud link https://soundcloud.com/user-260052746 From Fiona I'm very proud of this album about fairy-tales told from an adult perspective - it has taken me a long time to be able to find a little 'naïve' in some of these heart-felt issues. I’m a full-time composer, recording and touring musician and just returned from my third tour of China. Signature - Synchronicity is my 11th album with Little Hartley Music and I’m also an audiophile who records in hi-res formats with Blue Coast Records (content partners with Sony). I have been an ARIA Finalist (Australia), 8 x New Age Music Award Winner, a 5x IMA Finalist, and I’ve been Runner Up or Finalist in the International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMAs) over the last three years. On this album, I believe I’ve worked with some of the finest session musicians in the world including Tony Levin, Jeff Haynes, Eugene Friesen and legendary Producer and guitarist Will Ackerman (Founder, Windham Hill Records), who says: “One of the brightest lights in contemporary instrumental music, Fiona Joy is poised to move into stardom.” - Will Ackerman, Founder of Windham Hill Records Australian Pianist, Producer & Singer Fiona Joy is enjoying the success of her recent release Signature Synchronicity after returning from her third major tour of China, recording a new album in the US, and featuring in several Australian concerts with her Blue Dream Ensemble at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and the Sydney Women's International Jazz Festival. In China Fiona Joy is nick-named The Piano Angel, not just for her romantic, melodic songs and lush arrangements, but also for her gracious and mesmerizingly ballet-like performance style in concert. A prolific composer, she has always been interested in creating music that evokes images, emotions and stories. The album so far has won two catetories in the Independent Music Awards, a Finalist in the International Acoustic Music Awards, Hollywood Music in Media Awards and the USA Songwriting Competition. Her recording schedule for 2017 includes Blue Coast Records solo piano release (SACD/CD/DSD) Into the Mist and FLOW - the debut album by Fiona Joy, Lawrence Blatt, Jeff Oster & Will Ackerman. FLOW will be a groundbreaking release by a New Age group fof successful artists inspired by the iconic music of Windham Hill. It follows that her upbringing was filled with music. She recalls that her father embraced Andrew Lloyd Webber's music, playing Jesus in the Tamworth Musical Society production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Her classical piano training is evident in her thematic and melodic compositions. Ravel's “Bolero” emerged as an early influence, she says, adding, "I loved it, I played it over and over and deconstructed every part. George Winston, Prokofiev and Mendelssohn also intrigued me.” In 2015 Fiona contributed to a GRAMMY-winning album and traversed three continents, performing solo on a grand tour of China, entertaining in the U.S. at the ZMR Awards and at the audiophile Mecca, T.H.E. Show, closing out the year in Australia at the Sydney Women's International Jazz Festival with her renowned Blue Dream Ensemble. Once home, she attracted the national TV show ‘Lateline’, which ran a feature lifestyle piece on her life and music. (https://youtu.be/6RCTtmkwdSI) In 2014, a version of Fiona’s song “Grace” was chosen for a GRAMMY®-winning album that also reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and in 2013, her evocative piano and ethereal vocals earned her the global broadcaster’s choice and honor as the Best Instrumental Piano Album for600 Years in a Moment at the ZMR Awards, whose airplay charts she also graced at #1 for several months with Signature Solo. Fiona Joy also placed as Runner Up for Best Instrumental Song in the International Acoustic Music Awards, nominated alongside Pete Seeger for Best LIVE Performance Album in the Independent Music Awards, and she was an ARIA Finalist in Australia in 2008. As a forward-looking artist, Fiona is interested in pioneering new musical concepts and recording techniques to better serve her highly-interactive fan base. She frequently appears at audiophile conferences, and is signed to Blue Coast Records for high-fidelity recordings; owner/producer Cookie Marenco is considered and leader in the field, partnering with Sony Music to deliver hi-resolution music to discerning audiophile consumers. Marenco says, "Fiona's melodic solo piano and masterful performances are the perfect music to debut the kind of clarity double DSD audio brings to the home listener. Her music is a cross of George Winston's simple melodies and Ludovico Einaudi's musical sophistication." Fiona's hard work and conceptual vision for the Signature Series is now coming to fruition in Signature Synchronicity, produced in collaboration with Will Ackerman's team in full orchestral form. Ackerman, founder of both Windham Hill Records and Imaginary Road Studios, embraced and encouraged Fiona’s music years ago, stating, “Fiona’s Blue Dream album was the most ambitious project of my entire career and resulted in one of the most remarkable collaborations this genre has ever known. Blue Dream is unique and I’m as proud of it as anything I’ve ever worked on in my 35-year career of GRAMMY® Awards and Gold/Platinum records.” As a collaborator, Fiona has worked with Will Ackerman, Lawrence Blatt, T-Bone Wolk (Hall & Oates), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Dire Straits), Jeff Haynes (Pat Metheny), Eugene Friesen (Paul Winter Consort), Heather Rankin, Charlie Bisharat (Shadowfax), Rebecca Daniel (ACO), Jeff Oster and many others. In 2014, she and Ackerman co-produced the successful debut album of Jennifer DeFrayne, who won Best New Artist in the 2015 ZMR Awards for her album By A Wire. Music writer Michael Diamond, recently reviewed one of Fiona’s live concerts in the U.S., writing “What I appreciated most was being able to listen and watch Fiona at the piano. The passion and elegance in her performance was breathtaking, as her flawless technique combined with pure emotional expression.” When not recording or touring, Fiona is busy directing the entrepreneurial side of her music business, an effort which is crucial to the success of every independent artist. She manages her growing record label, Little Hartley Music, and promotes Fiona Joy Jewellery, her new line offering the upscale Swarovsky crystal-adorned bracelets and foot jewellery that she wears while performing barefooted in concert. When not on the road, Fiona escapes to her peaceful home in a small rural village in Australia. Gravación rescatada e dixitalizada do programa Dialogos 3 [Radio 3-RNE], apresentado e dirixido por Ramón Trecet. Nesta ocasión especial gravación da misa: Earth Requiem [1992], composta polo violonchelista do Paul Winter Consor, EUGENE FRIESEN. Sublime indeed. 4 time Grammy Award Winning cellist, Eugene Friesen was my guest for this episode of DreamFarm Radio along with pianist Tim Ray and trumpet player Greg Hopkins. As if it weren't enought to swim in the vibrations of Eugene's pulchritudinous cello playing, I was treated to their jazz chamber music trio, Tre Corda. "Tre Corda" refers to classical piano notation, and is an instruction to the pianist to the release of the soft pedal which allow all three piano strings vibrate freely. This trio's members are free to explore their own creative paths and fully resonate as individual musicians in free and yet collaborative expression. That's "Tre Corda!"
