Small businesses create nearly two-thirds of new jobs in the workforce and account for 44% of US economic activity. So what's the secret to their success? What challenges do they face and which are the best cities and regions for them to thrive? Samira Hussein visits the city of Nashville in Tennessee, which is a hotbed of new businesses and start ups - there are reportedly four out of every 1000 Nashville residents are CEOs. Samira meets James Davenport and Mike Hinds, co-founders of the Nashville Barrel company who launched their whiskey company in the city in February 2020. She goes to a business ‘mixer' where CEO of the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, Jane Allen, gives an overview of Nashville's appeal. Tennessee has very low taxes which can encourage new business to the area - Bradley Jackson, president and CEO of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry tells Samira how the approach works alongside other incentives. But what does this mean for the people living there? The state has one of the highest sales taxes in the country. That means everything you buy at the store costs more. Samira speaks to Dick Williams, board member of Tennesseans for Fair Taxation, who says this kind of tax scheme ends up hurting the most vulnerable people. On today's episode of The Brian Nichols Show, we're actually talking about abolishing the IRS! But we're doing it in a roundabout way! Listen as Steve Hayes from the Americans for Fair Taxation joins us to outline how the FAIRtax could actually help us abolish the IRS on our path of eliminating the income tax. "We started working on this idea of eliminating the income tax, totally eliminating it, and replacing it with an excise tax - effectively what we had in the Constitution, which is a retail sales tax on the federal level. It would be on new goods and purchases - and emphasize new - not used, but new goods and purchases, and retail services. If you go get your haircut, you get it if you're a lady and you get a manicure, those are retail, those are going to be subject to the fair tax. The fair tax rate is 23%. The idea is that what you're going to do is get your entire paycheck. Because we fund the government differently. We don't fund it with an income tax and the payroll taxes like now - we fund it by giving you all of your money so that you're in charge of how much tax you pay. Learn more about your ad choices. He is now the Chairman and President of Americans for Fair Taxation, a 501(c)(4) organization which is promoting the FAIRtax bill which has been introduced in Congress. He has appeared on many hundreds of radio and television shows, had numerous articles published in newspapers and magazines, and spoken to citizen groups around the country about why we must eliminate the income tax and the IRS and replace them with a national retail sales tax. Steve has testified before the House Ways and Means Committee and appeared on panels discussing tax reform in Washington, D.C. and around the country. Jessica is the Director of Aftercare for Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R) -- an organization that exists to rescue children from sex trafficking. In the past three years of existence, O.U.R. has rescued 653 victims and assisted in the arrests of more than 275 traffickers around the world. Born and raised in the Midwest, Jessica Mass found her calling in life when she was 13 years old on a church mission trip in the inner-city of Brooklyn, New York. Following high school she worked for 15 years in six different states in the area of social work empowering youth in foster care, areas of mental health and human trafficking. Her primary focus has been helping children and youth heal from trauma and empowering them in their hopes and dreams for the future. She also has first-hand experience being a therapeutic foster parent for children that experienced severe neglect, abuse or human trafficking. Jessica has been able to serve in several different parts of the world including England, Zambia, Uganda, Thailand, Cambodia, Haiti, Dominican Republic, India, and Mexico. In college she double majored in Biblical Studies and Family Education at Multnomah University.
