What happens when history, activism, and theater collide? The producers of The Return of Benjamin Lay break it down. What happens when a story refuses to be forgotten? The Return of Benjamin Lay isn't just a play—it's a powerful lesson in courage, creativity, and using your voice for change. In this episode of Your Creative Mind, I sit down with the producers of the production coming to The Sheen Center this March to talk about bringing this revolutionary abolitionist's story to the stage. In the fourth part of this short series of guest episodes before we get back to continuing the journey through the Shakespeare and Jonson cannon today's episode is a repeat of episode 32 of the podcast, first released in late 2020. Having just produced an episode on satyr play on the main podcast and another on the papyologists who rediscovered the play Trackers for the fledgling Patreon account I was very pleased to be able to talk to theatre director Jimmy Walters who have produced a revival of the play The Trackers of Oxyrhincus by Tony Harrison. To hear from first-hand experience what it was like to produce a modern adaptation of a Greek play, especially something as rare as the satyr play was a real treat. It is, I think, worthy of another listen if you heard it at the time, or a first listen if you have only joined us for the later theatrical periods.Jimmy Walters has been a professional actor and then director for almost twenty years. In his directing career he has presented work at most of London's most prestigious off-west end venues, including the Finborough Theatre, Southwark Playhouse and the Jermyn Street Theatre and at other venues around the UK. Since 2022 he has been Education Practitioner for Shakespeare's Globe leading Shakespeare workshops onsite for children of all ages.Support the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast. Truth and politics in the theatre: in conversation with David Ireland

Playwright and actor David Ireland does not hold back from dealing with controversial and difficult topics. Born in Northern Ireland, his experiences of living in that troubled country inevitably informs his work. His plays create a stir, with no holds barred, often shockingly hilarious, dialogue. As black comedies they expose the raw nerves of identity politics, sexual and family relationships, and contemporary political tensions and polarisations which can drive people to violence and push them to do mad things. Among his most recent work is the award-winning Cyprus Avenue, performed at the Royal Court in 2016, with Stephen Rea in the lead role, focused on a unionist convinced his new born grandchild is Gerry Adams and has to be killed. Ulster American, performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2018, focuses on the challenges of writing a play about Irish identity and had audiences laughing in horror. Sadie, due to be premiered in Belfast in early 2020 but cancelled due to lockdown, was recently screened on BBC4, is a disturbing dissection of a middle-aged working-class woman's frustration and anger. In this special Arts&Society Forum for the Battle of Ideas festival, Wendy Earle talks to David Ireland about truth and politics in theatre, artistic survival in a climate of intolerance and cancel culture, and the comedic possibilities of not holding back – and how he gets away with it! David Ireland is a Northern Irish-born playwright and actor most known for his award-winning plays Cyprus Avenue and Ulster American. He won the Stewart Parker Award and the Meyer-Whitworth Award in 2012 and was shortlisted for the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright 2016. More recently, Sadie was screened on BBC4 and his play YES SO I SAID YES is due to be performed at the Finborough Theatre, Earl's Court from 23 November to 18 December. Wendy Earle is the convenor of the Academy of Ideas Arts&Society Forum, and writes on culture and the arts.

Episode 32 An interview with theatre director Jimmy Walters about his 20217 production of Trackers of Oxyrhynchus by Tony Harrison. This version of the Satyr play 'Trackers' by Sophocles was originally performed by the National Theatre in 1988. Jimmy's revival in 2017 was at the Finborough Theatre in west London. In conversation we discussed the approach to the play and the way the adaptation by Tony Harrison put current social concerns at the heart of the play, which still remained true to many aspects of the original Greek play. Jimmy Walters' credits include productions of John Osborne's A Subject of Scandal and Concern, Julius Caesar, Improbable Fiction, A Naughty Night With Noël Coward, Hamlet (for a tour in the United Arab Emirates), I the Jury, Breaded Butler, and Dear Ray at the Edinburgh Festival. Recently he directed Billy Bishop Goes to War for Southwark playhouse and Jermyn Street Theatre and The Skin Game also for Jermyn Street Theatre, which due to the UK lockdown in 2020 was presented via Zoom.   Jimmy co-hosts the '…In quarantine' podcast with Alexandra Evans.  Season 1 discussed several Shakespeare plays and season 2 is taking on the challenge of discussing novels by Charles Dickens.   You can connect with Jimmy on Twitter @jimmywalters101  Please support the podcast at www.patreon.com www.ko-fi.com This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

In Paul Kember’s award-winning comedy drama Not Quite Jerusalem, four young Brits flee grim divided London of the late 1970s for Israel, in search of sun and fun on a kibbutz working holiday. Except it turns out to be more hard work than holiday under the blistering Middle East sun. There's conflict alienation and resolution, and at least one love story in store, as they get to know their kibbutznik hosts. The show broke box office records at the Royal Court Theatre, where it premiered in 1980 and revived in 1982. Now it’s the choice of Finborough Theatre to celebrate the 40th anniversary of both the theatre and the play. In a brief break from final rehearsals, director Peter Kavanagh spoke to JR’s Arts Editor Judi Herman about the play and about the UK and Israel – then and now.Not Quite Jerusalem runs until Saturday 28 March. 7.30pm, 3pm (Sat & Sun only). £18-£20, £16-£18 concs. Aaron is, first and foremost, a creative. Following his professional training in musical theatre at the London School of Musical Theatre, Aaron performed in productions, light entertainment and events in venues all over Europe. Following his performance career, Aaron briefly entered the business side of things as a producer, working on two major productions at the Finborough Theatre; the World Premiere of When Midnight Strikes, a musical by Charles Miller and Kevin Hammonds and a revival of the William Saroyan classic The Time of Your Life. Realising that producing wasn’t quite what Aaron was destined for, he joined Red Hot Entertainment as an agent and worked alongside the team before leaving to create his own boutique agency called Davis-Prior Associates. Following the birth of his first child, Aaron took the tough and heartbreaking decision to close the agency. In recent years, Aaron has developed his passion for creativity and imagery into a photography business and now provides portraiture and event photography services including, for example, headshot shoots, weddings and, of course, theatre production shots. Aaron has also been teaching theatre to young people for a number of years, principally at The Arts Centre Telford, a highly regarded performance and education company in Shropshire. Now Aaron lives in Denmark with his Danish wife and two children, is continuing to build his photography business both in the UK and Denmark and is working on a number of other projects, all (of course) creative!More about AaronWebsiteTwitterInstagramMore about Nicky@nickyraby across all social platformsmail: hello@nickyraby.com

As Israel Zangwill’s play is revived at Finborough Theatre for the first time in 80 years, Judi Herman finds out about the visionary writer and activist. He coined this evocative description of inclusivity for the title of a play that influenced President Theodore Roosevelt at its premiere in 1908. Judi spoke to actor Peter Marinker about the play and his own background, complete with tales of rabbis and nuns! He plays Zangwill himself, as well as the uncle and prospective father-in-law of Jewish composer David Quixano. First we hear an extract especially recorded for JR OutLoud by Marinker and actor Steffan Cenydd, who plays David, a man in love with a beautiful Russian Christian called Vera, much to the consternation of his Uncle Mendel (Marinker).

Kieran Lynn is an award-winning playwright. In 2012 he won the Nick Darke Award for his play Wild Fish. His play, An Incident at the Border was performed at the Finborough Theatre; a critical and commercial success the production transferred to the West End. Dan Ayling is a theatre director specialising in modern plays and contemporary opera, with a particular interest in text, space & gesture. He's also Equity Councillor for Director's, Designers and Fight Directors. The Trap, which we discuss in this interview, is a biting new comedy about the financial perils of a capitalist world.
