‘Content is king' has been our clarion call on many a podcast. What we often leave out is the equally important point of how you say something, as well as when you say it and where. As Corporate Affairs and Comms professionals we are often the director of the presentations our spokespeople give to key audiences. The ‘stage' could be a physical stage at a conference, or a virtual results presentation. It could be sitting in a TV or radio studio. Or even just a speech to employees at a town hall.  In many ways, Corporate Affairs practitioners need to be a Trevor Nunn, an Arlene Phillips and a Stephen Spielberg rolled into one with the occasional need to be a Tom Hanks as well. This episode is about the power of performance. How to make your content come alive, to stay memorable and even repeatable.  This is often where Comms professionals realise they need specialist advice. If only they could get access to someone who has been an actor, has been classically trained at somewhere prestigious like RADA, and has worked with CEOs and business leaders to extract the best of performances. Luckily at Little Questions we have just such an expert who is happy to give away some that valuable performance-related stardust on this episode. David Solomon is our guest for this podcast. He originally worked in the City, but left to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and spent the next ten years as a professional actor working at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre.  This episode is hosted by Matt Young. The marketing for this film highlights Judi Dench, but she's barely in it at all. As fans of hers, Melanie and I were disappointed. The movie is ok but it wasn't what we expected and that soured our experience of the story. Melanie still did a study of female archetypes and I still studied setups and payoffs, but the real lesson this week is what happens when a story doesn't meet audience (or reader) expectations. -V."Female characters don't have to be based on female archetypes, and vice versa for male archetypes and male characters." - Melanie Hill REGISTER FOR THE 2024 SPRING WEBINAR SERIESFor access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

Dame Judi Dench reflects on her career playing Shakespearean roles on stage and screen across seven decades. Judi Dench has spent her career bringing to life a hugely diverse array of characters. But she is, first and foremost, one of the greatest classical actors of our times. Her love of the work of William Shakespeare and the insight she has gained into his plays over the course of her career is explored in her new book The Man Who Pays The Rent, written with actor and director Brendan O'Hea. In a special edition of This Cultural Life to mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio in a BBC season of programmes celebrating Shakespeare, Dame Judi talks to John Wilson at her home in Surrey. With intimate insights into her relationship with the work of William Shakespeare, she recalls her pivotal experiences and influences that helped steer her career as one of Britain's greatest classical actors. After seeing her older brother act in a school production of Macbeth, she knew Shakespeare was for her. She remembers her very first professional stage role, playing Ophelia in an Old Vic production of Hamlet in 1957. Despite bad reviews and losing the role when the production went on tour, she was undeterred. Joining the RSC, she worked her way through many of Shakespeare's plays, including a landmark production of Macbeth in 1976, directed by Trevor Nunn. Dame Judi recalls her Olivier award-winning performance of Lady Macbeth opposite Ian McKellen, and her later role of Cleopatra opposite Anthony Hopkins in 1987 at the National Theatre. Remembering her last stage appearance in a Shakespeare play, she discusses her dual roles of Paulina and Time in A Winter's Tale, and how her degenerative eyesight condition affected her performance. 00h 00’00” Proud lady 00h 03’25” Presentación 00h 05’05” Cabecera 00h 06’10” Inicio 00h 06’45” Chanson 00h 11’10” If it wasn’t for you 00h 15’37” Merci, Madame 00h 21’53” Bread 00h 29’10” Gifts of love 00h 34’10” Proud lady 00h 37’57” Look for that woman 00h 41’09” Chanson – Serenade 00h 46’14” Meadowlark 00h 54’39” Buzz-a-buzz 01h 00’37” Any day now 01h 07’49” The luckiest man in the world 01h 10’07” Feminine companion 01h 13’45” If I have to live alone 01h 19’35” Romance 01h 26’06” Where is the warmth? 01h 31’31” Scene 01h 34’02” Gifts of love 01h 35’35” Chanson (Finale) 01h 38’09” Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 39’52” Endless delight – Patti LuPone & Kurt Peterson 01h 44’33” Bread 01h 47’42” Perfect every time 01h 49’34” What’s a man to do 01h 53’03” A little taste of Heaven 01h 58’02” Not in the market 02h 01’13” Plain and simple 02h 07’06” Where is the warmth?

As these two men battle for their souls, the Paris streets are littered with a political revolution that will forever alter the lives of these two men.  Robert Meffe traces the development of Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and Herbert Kretzmer's epic mega-musical, Les Misérables through inception and how it created the template for musicals that would successfully fuse their scores with popular musical forms. Significantly, the creative team of Trevor Nunn and John Napier struggled to adapt the French novel's storyline in a way that would resonate with a contemporary British audience both in pacing and the application of universal themes. The show's success inspired a fleet of musicals whose plots waxed epic including The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, and Titanic. Increasing Your Visibility with Florence Andrews  Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:  Discover the powerful practices and mindsets Florence has used to bring her best to the theatres in the West End and the big screen.  Learn how to rewire our brain from fear to our spark and excitement that will give us our edge.  Hear Florence's behind the scenes experience of filming a huge Ridley Scott film in Italy during a COVID lockdown.    Resources:  My first book, Relationship Ready: How I Stopped Fucking Randos and Started Cupcaking My Soulmate, is available on Amazon and Audible.  Grab your copy now!  Subscribe to my mailing list on my website.  Visit my website to learn about my coaching programs.  Visit Florence's  website┃Instagram┃Facebook     Episode Highlights  Born for the Stage  Florence grew up in a lively bohemian household surrounded by actors, artists, and musicians.  She felt called to performance and the arts while her family and community encouraged her.   Her father showed them old MGM classics like The King and Carousel.  Florence performed throughout her years in school and her first professional performance was Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, directed by Trevor Nunn.  Internal Tug of War  As Florence began her professional career in musical theatre, mindset blocks started popping up.  Though she knew what she was capable of and loved the work, self-sabotage in the forms of second guessing and stage fright tug at her.  Florence made the decision to work through her blocks by reading everything she could on mindset work, manifestation, and performance psychology.  Enter the Pandemic   When COVID hit, theatres closed and everyone was sent home to quarantine.  Florence couldn't perform but saw a need that brought together her long experience in the theatre and her passion for mindset work.  Her own personal work and success in mindset and theatre made her uniquely qualified to be a visibility and success coach.  Embrace Our ‘Inner Weirdo'  Instead of hiding behind quotes, memes, and graphics, Florence wanted to support powerful business women by helping them give permission to themselves to be seen, to make themselves visible.  Many of us are subconsciously and automatically driven to ‘dial it down' or dim our lights because we've been shamed in the past for shining out.  We carry that shame and story with us.   However, it's often that very spark or uniqueness that we dim that sets us apart, is a part of our gift or offering, and will lead us to our personal success.    “It is absolutely liberating to reconnect with that spark… and give yourself permission to shine out without shame.  3 Tips for Increasing Visibility  Reframe our fear as excitement.  When we are sitting in fear, instead of trying to calm ourselves and dispel the fear, attach the physical sensations to excitement rather than fear.  We can redefine the knots in our stomach or weak knees as excitement. WHen our brain begins to think of it as excitement, it can stop the sabotaging thoughts and behaviors.  The fear and adrenaline can then turn from sabotage to giving us our edge.  It is helpful to press your thumb and forefinger together when creating the anti-thought.    Dance with fear instead of running from it.  Fear isn't going anywhere, but we can see it as a badge of honor, as a marker of us getting out of our comfort zone and into growth.  Acknowledge that it is trying to be useful, that it can and will be present, but it is not in control.    Remember to turn the light outwards rather than inwards.  Focus the light on the thing we are putting out into the world rather than the inward things we worry about.  People are looking for the value of the thing we are offering and not the mistakes or gaps we may perceive.    BONUS tip:  Draw a vertical line with 0 on the left end 100 on the right end.  Think of the particular thing you are worried about and how much of it, out of 100, that you feel confident about.  Mark that point.  If it's 70%, mark that point on the horizontal line.  Draw a vertical through that mark.  On the left, between 0 and 70, make bullet points of all the things that give you confidence around it.  On the right, between 70 and 100, write all the things that make you feel uncertain or timid.  Cross out the right side and focus on everything on the left.  Make that 70% of the thing, 100% of what you focus on.    House of Gucci  About a year before COVID, Florence had taken a year off to be with her son.  She returned to work but after 3 days back, everyone was told to go home and the theatres closed due to COVID  Florence had been in theatre in the West End for 14 years and in recent years desired to do screen work, too.  It was a challenge to transition to screen as she was so well known for her theatre work.     In January of 2021, she was doing some screen work mostly in ads, and she was told to send in a self taped audition for a Ridley Scott movie.  Florence thought they would likely go with an actor with a bigger name but she sent in her tape which included her singing Italian opera.  It was her first time filming a movie and most everyone's first time filming a movie in Italy during a COVID lockdown with it's many restrictions. Unless the actors were running a scene, all the actors were in their trailers.  They all had very little contact with each other outside of actual filming.    She admired and appreciated Ridley Scott's dynamic and ego-less directing style.  When something wasn't working, he was willing to let go of his original vision and reset.   Florence had a surprising moment in which Ridley Scott asked for an unplanned closeup.  It was a moment that maybe in the past, she would have shrunk a bit from, but she gave herself permission to show off and take up space.  She let herself “be the persons they clearly trusted you to be by giving you the job”.    Daily Non Negotiables… that don't always happen  Have a cut off time in the evening.  “Yes, I could keep going, but it's not worth it.  Rest is part of productivity.  Protecting her energy.  Florence makes boundaries around replying to people.  For example, sometimes she replies for 20 minutes in the morning, then 20 minutes in the afternoon.  If we don't create these types of boundaries, we could spend the whole morning replying or be distracted throughout the day to reply right away.  Journaling.  Florence has been journaling since she was 10 years old.  It is her saving grace, safe space, and the practice that serves her the most. Though she loves writing prompts, she more often starts free flowing the things that are in her mind.  She gets the things that are ricocheting in her mind out onto paper.  When she enters a flow state, she notices that her higher self takes over.  When Florence finds her mind in a space lack or scarcity, jornaling brings her back.    About Florence  Florence Andrews is Hollywood and West End Lead actress whose credits include School of Rock, Miss Atomic Bomb, Once, Wicked, The Wizard of Oz, The Mikado, Annie Get Your Gund, A Little Night Music, and, most recently, Ridley Scott's feature film House of Gucci.      Florence is also a success and visibility mindset coach who lives in London with her two sons and many chickens.  She loves films, chocolate, and anything that has to do with mindset and peak performance psychology.  Florence sees the parallels in her experience as an actor and as entrepreneur, both requiring grit, courage, and being unapologetically visible.     Enjoy the Podcast?  If you enjoyed today's episode of The Heidi B Show, then hit subscribe, and share it with your friends!  Post a review and share it!  If you enjoyed tuning into this podcast, then do not hesitate to write a review.  You can also share this episode with your womenpreneur family and friends, so they can get closer to owning their power and upgrading their lives.   Have any questions?  You can contact me through email (heidi@heidibcoaching.com) or find me on Instagram or Facebook.  Thanks for listening!  For more updates and episodes, visit my website.  You may also tune in on Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify.  To pursuing our passions and building our businesses,  Heidi B

For nearly 40 years, Jenna Russell has been tackling hard-hitting roles on stage and on screen that speak to audiences today. Moreover, she has established herself as a prime interpreter of the works of Stephen Sondheim, taking on roles in 'Into the Woods', 'Merrily We Roll Along' and winning an Olivier Award for playing Dot/Marie in 'Sunday in the Park with George'.  Alongside her impressive repertoire of Sondheim works, Jenna has also played leading roles in 'Fun Home', 'The Bridges of Madison County' and most recently played the eponymous character in 'Piaf'.  On screen, her work also extends through to 'Doctor Who' and 'Eastenders', always playing compelling women with interesting stories to tell. As well as this, she is also a doting mum and partner to fellow actor Raymond Coulthard. Today, Jenna remains one of the most acclaimed and revered actresses on the West End and on Broadway and it seems she has no plans on pausing her career any time soon.As Jenna Russell continues plans for her upcoming solo concert at Cadogan Hall, she took some time to talk to us about what she hopes to bring for her first solo show. Despite living away from London, she tells us about how much she still loves going to watch theatre shows and remains committed to being a theatre actress. In this interview, we also reflect on the past year and how restrictions have impacted the industry that she values so dearly. We look back at her most recent work and we see Jenna reminisce about working with some of her most respected peers in the industry including fellow actress Sally Ann Triplet as well as multi-award winning director Trevor Nunn, and of course beloved composer Stephen Sondheim. It's an endearing conversation and we hope after listening, it makes you love Jenna Russell even more than we already do.

Philip Winchester reprises his role as Peter Stone on Wolf Films/Universal Television's “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” now in its 19th season.  Winchester originated the role on the 2017 NBC drama “Chicago Justice.”  Growing up in Montana with an American father and British mother, Winchester has a place in his heart for both sides of the Atlantic. As a teenager, he decided to devote himself to acting and moved to the U.K. to train in his craft. He was accepted to the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, all the while helping with his grandmother's bed and breakfast inn outside London. After graduation, he quickly landed two key roles. The first was in the sci-fi adventure “Thunderbirds,” starring Bill Paxton, Anthony Edwards and Ben Kingsley and directed by Jonathan Frakes. In 2007, he played villainous Edmund in the Royal Shakespeare Company's “King Lear,” in the seminal production by Trevor Nunn and starring Ian McKellen. Winchester was cast in the title role of NBC's miniseries “Crusoe” in 2008, based on Daniel Defoe's novel. In 2010, he was cast in an extended arc on “Fringe” as a scientist and love interest of Anna Torv's character. In 2011, Winchester starred as King Arthur's trusted friend Leontes in the series “Camelot,” with Joseph Fiennes, Eva Green and Jamie Campbell Bower. In 2015, he wrapped filming five seasons overseas as one of the leads in the Emmy Award-nominated drama-action series “Strike Back,” which was Cinemax's first original primetime series in more than 15 years.

This week we visit with another designer from across the pond, it's Tony nominated Scenic and Costume Designer, David Farley! David was in town finally bringing 'Daddy Long Legs' to New York after playing around the globe for 6 years. He tells us about the evolution of the design and the process of modifying the set to fit different theatres. David and Cory dig into the artistic, practical and economical differences of being a designer in the US vs the UK and they chat about David's award winning work on 'Sunday in the Park...', why designing Josh Groban's tour was more difficult than you would think, designing in the Festival Theatre at Stratford and the qualities he loves in his frequent collaborators John Caird, Trevor Nunn, and John Doyle. But David isn't all work…he also shares insight into being a designer on the road with an infant back home and why he's passionate about his garden. It's a great show, but mainly because of how adorably he pronounces ‘aluminum.' Grab a seat in the stalls, raise the gauze and enjoy this week's panto!
