In today's episode Elaine chat with 2 thirds of tasteinuourmouth theatre company Laoise Murray and Grace Morgan. We chat making work as a new company, women in theatre & indeed the world. How capitalism and the wellness industry uses us yet we buy in to it and much more. You're Needy (sounds frustrating) is on from the 1st -26th August at Buccleugh Terrace. Tickets available via Summerhall Ticket link: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/you-re-needy-sounds-frustrating You're Needy (sounds frustrating) tasteinyourmouth present the UK Premiere of their intimate, site-specific theatre show, You're Needy (sounds frustrating) - after receiving nominations for Best Production and First Fortnight Award during their sell-out Dublin Fringe Festival 2023 run. Skewering the dark undertones of the pastel pink wellness industry and the ways in which it plays on women's insecurity, You're Needy (sounds frustrating) invites one audience member at a time to the world of Carrie, who has retreated to her bathroom in the pursuit of wellness, solitude, and perfection. She spends her days taking long, tea-infused baths, and applying SnailMucusWhalePlacenta Face Masks (™), whilst living off of slim noodles and endless cups of coffee. Assuming the role of a support worker, audience members individually enter Carrie's world, and attempt to coax her back into reality and reintegrate her into society. Carrie's state of mind within You're Needy (sounds frustrating) is inspired by hikikomori, the Japanese phenomenon of young people retreating to solitude, usually within their parents' homes. The audience's position within this comes from the custom of ‘Rental Sisters', people who voluntarily visit these withdrawn individuals to encourage them to re-enter society. Created by tasteinyourmouth, performed by Laoise Murray and Heather O'Sullivan, with direction from Grace Morgan and original material and dramaturgy by William Dunleavy, You're Needy (sounds frustrating) is an uncanny, feminist, and intimate multi-disciplinary piece that explores how capitalism seeks to control women's bodies through the concept of ‘wellness'. Another missive from the Glasgow Film Festival. On this one, we chat with the mighty Viggo Mortensen. Yes, Aragorn himself! The Lord of the Rings and A History of Violence star was in town for the UK premiere of The Dead Don't Hurt, a sinewy western that Mortensen wrote, directed, composed the music for and starred in. Set in the 1860s in a small Nevada outpost, The Dead Don't Hurt is both a beautiful homage to the great westerns of the past and a subversion of this most macho of film genres. It centres on the romance between Mortensen's character Olsen, a Danish carpenter, and Vivienne, a fiercely independent French-Canadian woman who grew up dreaming of being Joan of Arc, played by Vicky Krieps. Mortensen and Krieps are an acting match made in heaven. They're ably supported by a cast that includes Danny Huston, Garret Dillahunt, and the young Scottish actor Solly McLeod, who plays a brutish psychopath who will change Vivianne and Olsen's lives forever. The day after The Dead Don't Hurt's UK Premiere, we sat down with Viggo Mortensen and his young co-star Solly McLeod to discuss the film. We're back at Glasgow Film Festival for some special episodes made on the ground at the festival. First up, we have a chat with Saint Maud director Rose Glass, whose blistering second feature, Love Lies Bleeding, opened the festival. Love Lies Bleeding is a wonderfully lurid neo-noir thriller starring Kristen Stewart as Lou, the owner of a grimy gym in Nowheresville New Mexico, who begins a passionate romance with Jackie, an itinerant wannabe bodybuilder who walks into Lou's gym one day, played by Katy O'Brian. Lou and Jackie's whirlwind romance is short-lived though, as Lou's dysfunctional family, murky past and some roid rage combine to send the couple's life into a tailspin. Before Love Lies Bleeding's UK Premiere, we sat down with Glass to discuss this hugely entertaining 80s noir throwback. Take a listen. This week, I'm chatting with cast and some of the creative team behind the world premiere of Eric Henry Sanders' play Maybe Probably - a play about two couples as they navigate the hilarious waters of preparing to have a baby, or recently having one. We're all either the product of this or have gone through it ourselves. Sanders isn't new to London and UK theatre, with his work being seen in London and the Edinburgh Fringe. He's also worked with Maybe, Probably's director Lydia Parker. AND…it turns out that one of the cast members was coincidentally in Sander's first play. I sat down with Sanders and Parker, as well as cast members Christy Meyer, Maria Teresa Creasey, and Lance Fuller. They spoke of the joys of returning to the theatre, especially in a comedy and the process of discovering just what they could bring to the production for their personal experiences. After navigating a studio system of the 1950s that actively discouraged female directors, Tanaka made six ground-breaking features over the course of a decade, dismissing the passivity assigned to most female protagonists of the era and creating a small, radical oeuvre of progressive heroines.

This is the first in the mini-series brought to you by the Road to Vrindavan documentary feature film which examines the importance of education for girls in India & the insight needed for tradition to be applied in ways that uplift rather than oppress. You can watch the film by checking for screenings at www.roadtovrindavan.com (UK Premiere is on right now from March 31st to April 5th and can be accessed globally) In this episode, I sit down with Shaena Jasmat who shares growing up in an Asian family and the pressures and expectations from the community especially on girls. From experiencing racism as a young person to becoming pregnant and making the very difficult decision to not have the baby to her struggles with alcohol. She struggled for many years with multiple fresh starts but the cracks re-appeared. When she finally stopped trying to hide her problems, she started to talk about them and has found acceptance within herself and what was her weakness has become her strength. She is now doing really well, has found a spiritual path, and is also helping others too. Douglas Stuart has just won The 2020 Booker Prize for his incredible debut novel 'Shuggie Bain', so to celebrate we're releasing the never-published-before Literary Salon we held with Douglas in June! In a special private event Douglas joined us online all the way from New York, along with viewers from around the world, and treated us to the very first UK reading from Shuggie Bain. Listen in to enjoy his reading and a heartfelt, honest, humorous and thought-provoking interview about the book that was 12 years in the making. Shuggie Bain is the unforgettable story of a sweet and lonely boy who spends his 1980s childhood in the run-down public housing of Glasgow. Shuggie's mother, Agnes, walks a wayward path: she's Shuggie's guiding light but also a burden as she finds increasing solace in drink, draining away the lion's share of each week's benefits. Shuggie is meanwhile struggling to somehow become the normal boy he desperately longs to be as it becomes evident he's hiding a secret. A story of addiction, sexuality, and love, Shuggie Bain is an epic portrayal of a working-class family rarely seen in fiction. We’ve been behind Shuggie Bain since we received an early proof and we couldn't be more delighted for Douglas, who adds the Booker to a long list of awards and accolades for his debut. To hear another longer reading Douglas gave us exclusively for our podcast before publication, click here or search our podcast listings from June 2020. In Can You Ever Forgive Me? Melissa McCarthy stars as Lee Israel, the best-selling biographer of celebrities such as Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estee Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. In the early 1990s - when she was in her early 50s - Lee found herself unable to get published because she had fallen out of step with the marketplace. Unable to pay the rent (or the vet bills for her beloved cat) she turned her art form to deception, aided by her loyal friend Jack Hock (Richard E. Grant). You Know You Want This is the debut collection of short stories from Kristen Roupenian whose short story, Cat Person, became a viral sensation after being published by the New Yorker in December 2017. It became their most read story ever, with more than 2.6 million hits and counting. Included in this collection alongside 11 new stories which are described as examining "the pull and push of revulsion and attraction between people." Winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Martyna Majok’s Cost of Living receives its highly anticipated UK Premiere at Hampstead Theatre starring Adrian Lester and directed by Ed Hall. John, a wealthy, brilliant, and successful PhD student with cerebral palsy, hires Jess, a recent graduate who has fallen on hard times, as his new carer. Across town, truck driver Eddie attempts to support and re-engage with his estranged wife, Ani, following a terrible accident that has left her quadriplegic. As four very different lives collide and entwine, roles are unapologetically flipped, reversed and exposed - who is actually caring for whom? EPISODE DESCRIPTION:Part Two of a little 'podcast on the go' review of the documentary "Oyster Factory" by Japanese director Kazuhiro Soda, and as I was 'on the move' please forgive the quality in the audio and gaps in the explanation - Call it 'Live from Leicester Square', if you like!Recorded on 15th July 2017.SERIES DESCRIPTION:"F. L. I. C. K. S." is a podcast by filmmaker and journalist Jason Verney, in collaboration with his production company, NativeNomadPictures.com (NNP) and his movies & music website, MiniMiniMovie.com (MMM), and stands for:FilmsLifeInterviewsCameraKoreaSoundsSelf-quoted as: "An Odd Plod, Nod & Pod to 'NO-MADe-land'..."This podcast can be seen as an apology perhaps, to those who may be awaiting the yet to be completed South Korean documentary by Mr Verney. Jason talks about various aspects of Korea, the Korean culture, movies (both Korean and international), music, life, travelling & more. Like the #KDOC14 documentary project itself, this too is a work in progress. Over time it will evolve... be this in format or from an audio to a visual podcast.Note: "F. L. I. C. K. S." is the new name for what was known as "Jason Verney's PLODCAST". Previous potential comic titles for this podcast were Prodcast*, Probcast** and Oddcast*** but the original name of "Plodcast" was used. * To represent 'still in Production'** For either 'Problematic' or 'Probably'*** Simply because it's all kind of 'Odd'PLODCAST, although probably in existent by other broadcasters, was thought most apt... Not so much due to the fact that the podcast itself is slow, plodding or boring (well, you can be the judge of that!) but indicating that the Korean documentary, and other filmic projects are slowly, but surely on their way!"F. L. I. C. K. S." was more recently thought of a more memorable and relevant name & not only indicates that it's related to movies but also spells out what else it covers: Films; Life; Interviews; Camera; Korea; Sounds.
