Exploring A Course in Miracles
The Resurrection of the World: Collective Awakening in A Course in Miracles

Exploring A Course in Miracles

In A Course in Miracles, Jesus invites us to think beyond his personal resurrection and even beyond our own — to a third and even greater vision: the resurrection of the entire world. In this message from a recent Sunday Gathering, Emily Perry explores Section 28 of the Manual for Teachers, What Is the Resurrection?, where Jesus describes a future where everyone — every living heart — awakens, forgives, and returns home to God together. You'll learn what the resurrected world looks like, how we know we're making progress toward it, and how our individual commitment to healing and forgiveness helps speed its arrival. Along the way, Emily reflects on the lives of moral pioneers like Benjamin Lay, ACIM co-scribe Bill Thetford, and the heroes of the Montgomery Bus Boycott — those who stood for a new world long before it became visible to others. Like them, and like Jesus himself, we are called to be early voices of the healed world. If we devote ourselves to forgiveness and love, we can shorten the time it takes for everyone to get home. ___________________________ Since 1993, our purpose has been to help with both the theory and practical application of A Course in Miracles. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Protester, Priest and Politician: Effective Altruists before their time, published by NickLaing on September 5, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Epistemic status: Motivated and biased as a Christian, gazing in awe through rose-tinted glasses at inspiring humans of days gone by. Written primarily for a Christian audience, with hopefully something of use for all. Benjamin Lay - The Protester Benjamin Lay, only 4½ feet tall, stood outside the Quaker meeting house in the heart of Pennsylvania winter, his right leg exposed and thrust deep into the snow. One shocked churchgoer after another urged him to protect his life and limb - but he only replied "Ah, you pretend compassion for me but you do not feel for the poor slaves in your fields, who go all winter half clad."[1] Portrait of Benjamin Lay (1790) by William Williams. In 1700 Lay's moral stances were more than radical.[2] He thought women equal to men, was anti-death penalty, pro animal rights and an early campaigner for the abolition of slavery. In the Caribbean he made friends with indentured people while he boycotted all slave produced products such as tea, sugar and coffee. I thought Bruce Friedrich of the Good Food Institute[3] was ahead of his time for going vegan in 1987 - well, how about Lay in the 1700s? Many of these moral stances might seem unimpressive now, but back then I would bet under 1% of people held any one of them. These were deeply neglected and important causes, and Lay fought against the odds to make them tractable. His creative protests were perhaps as impressive as his morals. He smashed fine china teacups in the street saying people cared more about the cups than the slaves that produced tea. He yelled out "there's another Negro master" when slave owners spoke in Quaker meetings. He even temporarily kidnapped a slave owner's child, so his parents would experience a taste of the pain parents back in Africa felt while their children were permanently kidnapped. These protests stemmed from a deep spiritual devotion to do and proclaim the right thing - people's feelings and cultural norms be darned. Extreme actions like these have potential to backfire, but Lay chose wisely to perform most protests within his own Quaker church. Perhaps he knew that within the Quakers lay fertile ground to change hearts and minds - despite it taking 50 years to make serious inroads. When the Quakers officially denounced slavery In 1758 - perhaps the first large organization to do so - a then feeble Lay, aged 77, exclaimed: "Thanksgiving and praise be rendered unto the Lord God… I can now die in peace." John Wesley - The Priest "Employ whatever God has entrusted you with, in doing good, all possible good, in every possible kind and degree to the household of faith, to all men!" - John Wesley A key early insight of the "Effective Altruism" movement was the power of "earning to give" - that we can do great good not just through direct deeds, but by earning as much money as possible and then giving it away to effective causes. Yet one man had the same insight with similar depth of understanding 230 years earlier, outlined in just one sermon derived almost entirely from biblical principles.[4] John Wesley preached extreme generosity as a clear mandate from Jesus. His message was simple but radical. Earn all you can, live simply to save money, then give the rest to good causes. Sounds great but who actually does that? He also had deep insight in the pitfalls of earning to give. We should keep ourselves healthy and not overwork. We should sleep well and preserve "the spirit of a healthful mind". We should eschew evil on the path to the big bucks. And don't get rich while you're earning the big bucks, as you risk falling away from your faith and mission. He also understood that earning to give wasn't a path for e...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Celebrating Benjamin Lay (died on this day 265 years ago), published by Lizka on February 8, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Quaker abolitionist Benjamin Lay died exactly 265 years ago today (on February 8, 1759). I'm using the anniversary of his death to reflect on his life and invite you to join me by sharing your thoughts sometime this week. Lay was a radical anti-slavery advocate and an important figure in the Quaker abolitionist movement. He's been described as a moral weirdo; besides viewing slavery as a great sin, he opposed the death penalty, was vegetarian, believed that men and women were equal in the eyes of God, and more. He didn't hide his views and was known for his "guerrilla theater" protests, which included splashing fake blood on slave-owners and forcing people to step over him as they exited a meeting. Expulsion from various communities, ridicule for his beliefs or appearance (he had dwarfism), and the offended sensibilities of those around him didn't seem to seriously slow him down. Consider sharing your thoughts this week (February 8-15)! You could share a post, a Quick Take, or simply comment here. (If you post something, you could also link to this post and invite readers to share their own thoughts.[1]) Here are a few discussion prompts, in case they help (feel free to write about whatever comes to mind, though!): How can we develop the courage to be " morally weird"? How can we avoid missing potential ongoing moral catastrophes (or get more moral clarity)? When are disruptive approaches to moral change or advocacy more useful than "polite" or collaborative ones? (When are they less useful?) In the rest of this post, I share a brief overview of Benjamin Lay's famous protests , life and partnership with Sarah Lay (a respected Quaker minister and fellow abolitionist) , and how their work fits into the broader history of slavery . I should flag that I'm no expert in Lay's life or work - just compiling info from ~a day of reading. Protests against slavery: shocking people into awareness "Over the course of the twenty-seven years that he lived in Pennsylvania, Lay harangued the Philadelphia Quakers about the horrors of slavery at every opportunity, and he did so in dramatic style." Will MacAskill in Chapter Three of What We Owe the Future Lay's famous protests illustrate his "dramatic style" (and how little he cared about the opinion of others). Here are some examples: 1738: At the biggest event of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Lay showed up in a great coat and waited his turn to speak. When the time came, Lay rose and announced in a "booming" voice: "Oh all you Negro masters who are contentedly holding your fellow creatures in a state of slavery, . . . you might as well throw off the plain coat as I do." He then threw off his coat, revealing that he was dressed in a military uniform and holding a sword and a book: "It would be as justifiable in the sight of the Almighty, who beholds and respects all nations and colours of men with an equal regard, if you should thrust a sword through their hearts as I do through this book!" When Lay plunged his sword through the book, it started gushing red liquid. In preparation for the event, Lay had hollowed out the book and inserted an animal bladder filled with bright red pokeberry juice. As he finished speaking, he splattered the fake blood on the slave owners present. Smithsonian and WWOTF) One Sunday morning he stood at a gateway to the Quaker meetinghouse, knowing all Friends would pass his way. He left "his right leg and foot entirely uncovered" and thrust them into the snow. Like the ancient philosopher Diogenes, who also trod barefoot in snow, he again sought to shock his contemporaries into awareness. One Quaker after another took notice and urged him not to expose himself to the freezing col...

They hope to support a global ban on plastics." Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived. Hours after People Magazine's story celebrated Mattel's eco-conscious move, the toy company contacted The New York Times to clarify the situation. In an email, Mattel described the campaign as a “hoax” that had “nothing to do with Mattel.” The company said that the activists had also created fake websites made to look as if they belonged to Mattel. “Those were duplicates — not Mattel actual sites,” it said. This elaborate hoax was perpetrated by Daryl Hannah and the Barbie Liberation Organization (BLO) against the Mattel Corporation and the media. Yet, behind this public trickery was a broader, poignant message: the need to address the environmental crisis wrought by plastic waste. One of the tricksters behind the hoax graduated from Greenwood Friends School, a Quaker elementary and middle school. As a boy, he attended Millville Friends Meeting. Operating under the pseudonym Jeff Walburn, this member of the artist-activist group the Yes Men describes the methodology behind their "mischief performances." "I helped write a lot of the materials, which includes press releases and websites. And we had a press conference. We made a fake product commercial for this new line of Barbies that would, instead of being made of plastic, be made out of mycelium and mushrooms. It's a little far-fetched because it's not being done yet, but it's also still very feasible." The Yes Men not only impersonate corporations but also suggest that these corporations are finally doing the "right thing." In doing so, they engage in what they refer to as "identity correction." In a world where conversations around activism are often steeped in solemnity, the latest episode of the Quakers Today podcast injects an element of whimsy while navigating the moral complexities inherent in social change. Host Peterson Toscano delves into a topic that straddles the lines between activism, ethics, and trickery, raising a tantalizing question: "When it comes to activism, do the ends justify the means?" Dig Deeper Read Peterson Toscano's article, “Speaking Lies to Power: Daryl Hannah, Barbie, and Quaker Tricksters” and learn about Quaker tricksters Bonnie Tinker and Benjamin Lay.  See Peterson's full video interview with Daryl Hannah Check out the videos “Jeff Walburn” and The Yes Men created for the Barbie Liberation Organization hoax this year and 30 years ago.Eco-Warrior Barbie fake TV Commercial Plastic Free with Daryl Hannah parody video Fake press conference with Daryl Hannah  BLO Vs. The episode features an audio collage of five writers who shared their insights and experiences around the theme. Olivia Chalkley argues that progressive Christians, including young "Christ-curious" individuals, could find a home in Quakerism by reclaiming their faith from its association with reactionary politics. Madison Rose emphasizes that the Quaker commitment to social justice and individual spiritual journeys has consistently drawn them back to the community. Quakerism, for them, is a space of "respite" that allows a direct, personal relationship with the divine, free of any intermediaries. Nikki Holland shares how Quakerism allowed her and her husband to bring their "full, true selves to worship," a stark contrast to their previous faith communities where they felt marginalized. Sofia Williams enjoys the weight of Quaker history and the sense of both immediate and long-term community felt during meetings. Annie Bingham found solace and a sense of timeless wisdom in Quaker meetings, particularly as a break from the imbalances felt in their college community. Benjamin Lay was an abolitionist, vegetarian, pacifist, gender-conscious, anti-capitalist, environmentalist Quaker, with dwarfism and a hunchback, and he was an all-around badass who refused to remain quiet about what he believed in. Oh, and he lived in a cave. Mostly, though, this story goes to show you that being "woke" isn't new. It's not a scary boogeyman like some Tucker Carlsons would have you believe. Most importantly, though, don't forget... he was a little guy. You won't forget though! Joel won't let you. In this episode, we also take a look at the current situation in Moscow, Idaho where four college students were apparently stabbed to death while asleep in their beds. We discuss the timeline of events that took place the night of the stabbings and all of the aftermath so far. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/middleagedandmediocre/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/middleagedandmediocre/support

This time Eric welcomes historian and author Marcus Rediker to CounterPunch Radio to discuss how the study of history can impact our politics today. Marcus explains what he means by studying "history from below" and how that perspective translates to our thinking of present day struggles. The conversation touches on the nature of slave resistance on the Atlantic, how and why that history has been suppressed, and the importance of unearthing it for future generations. Marcus also introduces the audience to the radical abolitionist Benjamin Lay and explains why Lay matters so much, even nearly 300 years after his death. So much important ground covered in this conversation with one of America's leading historians and radical scholars. Don't miss it! More The post Marcus Rediker appeared first on CounterPunch.org.

Many people haven't.  In terms of abolitionists, you might be more familiar with names like Frederick Douglas and Sojourner Truth. Benjamin Lay labored before these better-known abolitionists appeared on the scene. Ahead of his time, Benjamin Lay is someone you should know!

Lay embodied inter-sectional resistance centuries before the term was coined. In the 18th century he not only fought against slavery and condemned racism but supported women's rights, criticized class disparities, and promoted the human treatment of animals. Lay was a vegetarian who lived in a humble cave with his beloved wife. He condemned the hypocrisy of the slave owning church leadership. Peter Joseph is a director, documentarian, author, and social critic. He founded the Zeitgeist Movement and has just released his first narrative film – InterReflections. Lee Camp and Joseph discuss the film and how it reflects on the dystopian reality we're living in today. InterReflections is a continuation of Joseph's social criticism. It takes on the overpopulation versus overconsumption debate, the destructive nature of the financial industry, capitalism's inability to rationally understand ecological sustainability, and many more of the most important issues that underpin modern capitalism. Naomi Karavani brings you the Weekly Offensive with a report on how ExxonMobil is using Facebook to try to get around negative press for the fossil fuel industry. As climate change becomes a more accepted truth of our age Exxon needs to spend millions to convince anyone that the fossil fuel industry should be allowed to survive. Meanwhile Facebook actively suppresses progressive news sources. It's almost like Facebook supports a conservative worldview and wants people to oppose a system that encourages taxing the rich. Natalie McGill takes a look back at the story of the Quaker abolitionist Benjamin Lay who opposed the institution of slavery and angered fellow Quakers in the 18th century. The 4'11 activist used theatrics and regular old risk-taking to spread his message of racial equality and infuriate slaveholders. Badass.

After being kicked out of one community after another, he eventually became a hermit of sorts -- though, even then, his story wasn't done. In fact, when the Quakers first arrived on the continent they, like many other colonists, owned slaves. It was up to Benjamin Lay to bravely call out their hypocrisy, pointing to the discrepancy between their religious views and their earthly practices. In The Fearless Benjamin Lay, renowned historian Marcus Rediker chronicles the transatlantic life and times of a singular man—a Quaker dwarf who demanded the total, unconditional emancipation of all enslaved Africans around the world. Mocked and scorned by his contemporaries, Lay was unflinching in his opposition to slavery, often performing colorful guerrilla theater to shame slave masters, insisting that human bondage violated the fundamental principles of Christianity. He drew on his ideals to create a revolutionary way of life, one that embodied the proclamation “no justice, no peace.” Lay was born in 1682 in Essex, England. His philosophies, employments, and places of residence—spanning England, Barbados, Philadelphia, and the open seas—were markedly diverse over the course of his life. He worked as a shepherd, glove maker, sailor, and bookseller. His worldview was an astonishing combination of Quakerism, vegetarianism, animal rights, opposition to the death penalty, and abolitionism. While in Abington, Philadelphia, Lay lived in a cave-like dwelling surrounded by a library of two hundred books, and it was in this unconventional abode where he penned a fiery and controversial book against bondage, which Benjamin Franklin published in 1738. Always in motion and ever confrontational, Lay maintained throughout his life a steadfast opposition to slavery and a fierce determination to make his fellow Quakers denounce it, which they finally began to do toward the end of his life. With passion and historical rigor, Rediker situates Lay as a man who fervently embodied the ideals of democracy and equality as he practiced a unique concoction of radicalism nearly three hundred years ago. Rediker resurrects this forceful and prescient visionary, who speaks to us across the ages and whose innovative approach to activism is a gift, transforming how we consider the past and how we might imagine the future. Marcus Rediker is Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Pittsburgh and Senior Research Fellow at the Collège d’études mondiales in Paris.
