Tonight, we'll read the final part to the Romanian fairy tale “The Fairy of the Dawn.” The first part to this story aired in the previous episode. Snoozecast first read this story back in January of 2022. In the first part of our story, we are introduced to a king with three sons: Florea, Costan, and the youngest, Petru. Petru stands apart from his brothers—not for his strength or bravery, but for his gentle and playful spirit. While Florea and Costan pursue traditional ideals of heroism, Petru is more inclined to singing, laughing, and exploring the joys of life. Yet when their father pleads for help in seeking the magical spring of the Fairy of the Dawn, it is Petru who ultimately accepts the call to adventure. Petru's journey is made possible by a valiant and wise horse, whose loyalty and clever advice prove indispensable as they navigate the perilous fairy world. Together, they face trials that test Petru's courage and resolve, as he ventures into realms both wondrous and dangerous. His path is fraught with fierce battles against dragons and cunning goblins, challenges that force him to grow into the hero he never imagined himself to be. Along the way, Petru's actions ripple outward, leaving the kingdom better and more harmonious than he found it, even as he continues onward toward the spring and his ultimate destiny. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus!

Külaline on džässmuusik, pianist Mathei Florea.

Bukovina, a former borderland of the Habsburg empire now divided between Ukraine and Romania, was a place of mutual observation, competition, and conflict between the different states and governments that laid claim to the territory. Over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the province experienced repeated regime changes – many of which occurred seemingly overnight. This talk explores how the shared challenges of governing Bukovina facilitated mutual influences between regimes that otherwise viewed each other as ideological opposites. About the Speaker: Cristina Florea is an Assistant Professor in Modern European history at Cornell University, researching and teaching the histories of Eastern and Central Europe and the Soviet Union in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a focus on borderlands, imperial entanglements and competition, and the interplay of nationalisms and empires in the region.

Contemporary Housing Struggles: A Structural Field of Contention Approach (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) provides a comparative study of housing contention in Budapest and Bucharest in 2008-2021. The financialization of housing and the resulting inequalities, expulsions and social contention are a central characteristic of today's capitalist crisis. These two East European cities that fall outside the usual focus of urban movements research provide an illuminating case of similar structural conditions governed by different political constellations at the national and local scales. Instead of searching for unilinear narratives connecting structural tensions to politicized claims, the book offers an in-depth contextual analysis of multiple forms of contention, their (often unintentional) interactions, and their broader political-structural background, including tensions surrounded by political silence. The authors analyze the two cases and their comparative lessons through what they propose as a “structural field of contention” approach to the multiple, interconnected ways in which structural tensions become (or not) politicized in today's social movements. The book will appeal to everyone interested in today's urban tensions and social movements. Anna Zhelnina holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Helsinki. This was a different episode and we had a live audience asking questions. I think we will be doing this more and more over time and I would love to hear your opinion about this format. Do you like it? Don't like it? Hit me up on LinkedIn or Twitter - Links can be found @ SoloCoder.com. We spoke with Cristian Florea. Cristian is a Frontend Developer working for Novartis, the big pharma company. The format was a bit different from the traditional one and Cristian delivered a lot of valuable insights about the industry, getting experience as a frontend developer and many tips to help people landing their first job as a developer. Aside from working at Novartis, about 2 years ago Cristian started helping aspiring developers by creating a coaching program to give them a hand on landing their first job. Coming from a different background - Cristian studied Law - he has first-hand experience of how someone with non-traditional experience, can break into the industry. We have also explored the fact that Cristian is a bit nomadic right now, going from country to country for only a few months at a time. Sounds like a dream come true to many people who love to travel. From electronic music producer to barista to coder, you will take away a lot from this chat with Cristian Florea, coach for aspiring developers. Full show notes and links: https://SoloCoder.com/93
