Monday, Aug. 15, marked one year since the Taliban reclaimed Afghanistan after 20 years of war and bloodshed. The New York Times reported that upward of 300,000 Afghans helped U.S. efforts in Afghanistan over those years. On this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast," Aziz, an Afghan interpreter whose full name is being withheld by The Daily Signal, shares his story of escaping the Taliban and the fallout after the botched U.S. withdrawal."To be honest with you, it was a really dark day and very bad time," Aziz recalls of the days leading up to the fall of the capital city of Kabul. "There was fear. There was disappointments as the provinces were collapsing and the Taliban were reaching to the capital. I was totally dying, like a battery will lose its charge. I was seeing my body from inside; it was dying."Aziz served as interpreter for Chad Robichaux during his eight deployments from 2003 to 2007 as a staff sergeant in the Marines' Force Reconnaissance special operations unit or as a Defense Department contractor. The Aghan fought side-by-side with the Americans. Robichaux, author of the forthcoming book "Saving Aziz: How the Mission to Help One Became a Calling to Rescue Thousands From the Taliban," also joins the podcast to describe helping to evacuate Aziz, his family, and thousands of others as chaos unfolded in Afghanistan.Aziz says that he didn't expect his country to fall so quickly to the Taliban."We were thinking it will probably at least take them a few years before the regime collapsed," Aziz says. "We were not expecting it, that the regime will collapse all of a sudden within the matters of hours. Like within 24 hours, the whole system collapsed. That was totally unpredictable," Now residents of The Woodlands, Texas, Aziz, 39, and Robichaux, 46, share their journey out of Afghanistan, their message to the Biden administration, and what the future holds for the terrorist-run country. Both Mark and Phil have extensive backgrounds in special operations. Mark served in various MOS's and billets throughout his 30 years of time and service to the Corps from Infantry to Force Reconnaissance. While in the military, Mike served in the Marine Corps elite Force Reconnaissance teams and then later as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Infantry and Military Police Corps. Shane joined the Marines days after 9/11 and served as a point-man in Force Reconnaissance. What did he take away from his experience? What is the mission of America's foreign policy? What do the recruiters omit to tell those willing to serve? After stories from the campaign, Meredith joins the podcast to continue the conversation of what this means for young men and women who want to advance the principles of peace and liberty. Joining us for the first time on SOFREP Radio is 13-year Marine Corps veteran with Force Reconnaissance, Jose "Pep" Tablada. Calling Jose's background impressive would be a massive understatement, serving both as a team leader and platoon sergeant with qualifications including graduating as a combatant diver, scout sniper, SERE-C, HALO, and more. It's not often we have someone of Tablada's background on the show, so we dive deep into what Marine Force Recon is all about, and you're guaranteed to learn some new stuff. Currently, Jose is the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations & International Engagement with Marine Corps Forces Pacific, and he volunteers his time on the board of directors for the Marine Reconnaissance Foundation. You'll learn a lot about the great work that the foundation is doing for their brothers in arms, including a retreat in Hawaii for Gold Star families taking place next month. Be sure to check them out and donate at ReconFoundation.org. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
Doing this show, we meet some guys with incredibly interesting backgrounds. Todd Opalski's history is particularly unique though, making the transition from serving in the Marine Corps as an Officer, a Marine Scout Sniper, and a part of Force Reconnaissance, to then going into the Army and being an Assault Commander in the Special Missions Unit. Prior to that, Todd was also a natural bodybuilder. After leaving the military, Todd transitioned to the tech world in Silicon Valley. So, you may wonder, where does one go from there? Todd has a pretty awesome plan for 2019 to open Camp Zen Commando in Costa Rica. Zen Commando plans on instructing people in a wide array of skills from self-defense to yoga. Todd's even looking for some people to help him on this journey which he gets into with us. Enjoy this great in-studio interview, and be sure to leave a review on Apple Podcasts when you're done with it. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

Steven was born December 7th, 1978 in St. Louis, Missouri. His mother, Peggy, was an office worker and a homemaker, and his father, Bill, worked for a grocery store chain, starting off as a bag boy, and ultimately retiring as senior vice-president of store operations. He has two brothers, Bill and David. Steve entered the military in December 2000. Despite his father’s attempts to talk him into joining the Navy, he instead chose to join the Marine Corps, stating, “If it’s the hardest, why not just start there?” His first deployment was as an infantryman with 2/2 Golf Company. Years later, Steve would still speak of this time here fondly and count himself lucky for the experience. Serving as the platoon radio operator, he valued the time he was able to spend in close proximity to excellent leaders, and he valued the friendships he was able to cultivate while traveling across three continents. The experience of speaking, working, and living with men from a wide variety of social, ethnic, and educational backgrounds continues to influence his approach to personal and business interactions to this day. Upon returning from the initial assault into Iraq in 2003, Steve decided to advance his military career by joining the Force Reconnaissance community. The journey was far from easy. It fact, it was far beyond difficult. But, to hear him tell it, the reward of being in a community of extremely capable men, doing an extremely difficult job, was well worth the effort spent. His second deployment to Iraq was as a reconnaissance marine with 2nd Force Reconnaissance Co. Over the course of seven months, his platoon would execute over ninety missions, clearing and securing over six hundred objectives. It was an exhausting time for him, both physically and mentally, but his experiences there would be invaluable in defining the shape of the man that he would strive to be later in life. Steve would eventually go on to attend the first assessment and selection class for Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). Of the fifty-two candidates who arrived, he would emerge from the two-week vetting as the only one to successfully pass, earning his place in MARSOC. After exiting the military in 2013, Steve would spend most of the next five years deployed as a civilian to one austere environment or another, while also founding and growing his own document editing company, Polished Paper. Today on Hempire Dr. Eileen Karpfinger is joined by Chris Kleronomos who aims to “bring apitherapy out into the light.” Chris became interested in natural medicine while serving in the U.S. Navy. As a Corpsman he provided battlefield first aid and medical treatment to Force Reconnaissance where he learned of the value of plants for both survival and medicine. The USMC Force Recon Units are the Marines version of the Army’s Green Beret or Navy’s SEAL Teams and fall under the Joint Special Operations Command. After the service he followed this interest and studied for a master’s degree in Oriental Medicine, at the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine, and then completed a doctoral program focusing on oncology and chronic disease, at Bastyr University in Seattle. Chris Kleronomos is an activist. In the 2002 he worked in Cambodia for WildAid and Conservation International —which aims to end illegal wildlife trade, largely resulting from the trade in natural products (plant and animal) for medicine. He is an outspoken supporter of the value of natural healing in treating chronic pain and other disorders. And, as a newly elected board member of the AAS, he is working tirelessly to educate the public about apitherapy.
GRP 85- On for this week's podcast is retired Navy Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman (SARC), and the host of "The Dangerzone" podcast Dan Brown. SARC's are highly trained Special Operations Medical personnel who deploy mainly with the Force Reconnaissance companies and the Marine Raiders. There have been instances where SARC's have deployed with Naval Special Warfare Teams and Army Special Operations Teams. SARC's are trained as amphibious special operations personnel going through various schooling alongside Recon Marines to include: Army Basic Airborne School, Marine Combatant Diver school, Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman Course, and the Special Operations Combat Medicine Course. Dan continued on to complete the second half of the Special Operations Medical Course that typically only the Green Beret Medics complete. SEALs and SARC's will also complete the full course to become Independent Duty Corpsman, but only the senior Corpsman go through the rest of the course. We talked about Dan running Village Stability Operations (VSO) in Afghanistan during his deployment with the Raider Battalion, and how that type of mission is incredibly complex as it requires the war fighter to play the role of a diplomat and warrior. Dan was wounded during an attack in Afghanistan resulting in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). We discussed TBI in some detail which is a topic I plan to cover extensively in future episodes. 0:00-Intro 11:00-SARC Pipeline 13:30-Special Operations Combat Medicine Course 16:28-SARC employment 17:34-Force Recon Battalion, Marine Raider Battalion 19:16-Independent Duty Corpsman 21:14-Prolonged Field Care 26:49-The positive effects of 15 years of war for trauma medicine in the United States 39:03-Village Stability Operations (VSO) 58:13-Running operations in Afghanistan, wounded in Afghanistan, Traumatic Brain Injury. 1:31:00-Outro Dan Brown: The Dangerzone Podcast on Sound Cloud, ITunes, and YouTube.
