Hello again Fellow Golfists, I wanted to share that I listened to a great historical podcast last night and thought that Conor T. Lewis and his TalkinGolf Podcast did a great job discussing the history of the Ben Hogan Golf Company with John Barba of MyGolfSpy.com. This episode was so great at describing and documenting all of the great history that happened when Mr Hogan was involved in his company. I always thought that a golf club with Ben Hogan's name on it was better when Ben Hogan was alive. There were many trials and tribulations that happened during the company's existence in the golf market place. I just wanted to share what Ben Hogan and the Ben Hogan Golf Company meant to me. Bonny and Michelle met in yoga class. Among many things, they connected over the lack of available options for women's golf clothing. They got to designing, with a simple edict in mind: each piece must be considerate to how women functionally use the clothing on the golf course. That means pockets, that means mock-necks, that means ZERO skort mullets. Sierra Madre was born. What Bonny and Michelle designed encapsulates a growing wave in golf fashion: approachable, golf-agnostic, flexible pieces that people can wear without restriction. Volle Golf is a innovative Golf Company who are finding a way to change the industry. Kael joins Staffy live in studio to discuss the story!
It's September 1985, and the SA Air Force and ground forces have already shot down two Russian helicopters and an Antonov transport plane. That was an attempt at slowing down an MPLA ground assault using it's PLAN troops against UNITA at Mavinga. If you remember, this was the Angolans Operation Second Congress. On the 29th September, 32 Battalion ground team near Cuito Cuanavale radio'd the SA Air Force operations of a helicopter formation that had just taken off, bound for the battle zone around Mavinga. This was a mixed formation, two Mi-8/17 transport choppers escorted by Mi-25 gunships. The Impalas were scrambled and headed at low altitude to the targets which were picked up along the Lomba River. The Russian helicopters were flying at 3000 feet AGL, and the Mi-8/17 formation was in a trailing echelon about 1000 meters apart. About a kilometer back, the two Mi-25s were flying in support and were also at 3000 feet. The first pair of Impalas launched their attack, and then the second with devastating consequences for the chopper pilots and crew. All four were shot down. A third pair of Impalas who were monitoring watched as two MiG-23 fighter jets approached at 200 feel AGL, then swept their wings back, accelerated and climbed out of sight. They preferred to avoid dogfighting the South Africans. ON first December 1985 operational order number 1/12/85 required 32 Battalion to inflict maximum damage on FAPLA personnel and equipment in the 3rd and 6th military regions by sustained bombardment. Easier said than done. The main targets were Cuito Caunavale and the airstrip at Menongue. There were also specific instructions to target the FAPLA force as soon as it began moving towards Jamba using the all-important Multiple Rocket Launchers or MRLs. 32 was warned not to let these fall into enemy hands. Colonel Eddie Viljoen commanded this part of the operation targeting Menongue, both the MRL troop along with Charlie Company, while Captain Daan van der Merwe led an MRL troop and Golf Company as they attacked Cuito Cuanavale. Ten years earlier 32 had deployed around Menongue during operation Savannah, now they were going back. On the 15 December four MRLs were flown to Rundu from Waterkloof Air Force Base and everything was set to roll on Christmas eve.

Precision is a word that aptly applies to Dr. David Brown, owner of McIntyre Golf Company, the leading manufacturer of replica golf balls in the world. (He even plays Nicoll Precision irons from the mid-1910s.) An orthopedic surgeon by training, specializing in knees and overall sports medicine, he meticulously crafts gutta percha balls, brambles, mesh pattern and small dimple balls appropriate for play with pre-1935 clubs. And like his predecessor, Chris McIntyre, he brings a relentless curiosity and scientific rigor to the process, from sourcing raw materials to creating the perfect systems and processes to replicate these precious items for thousands of players from here to Japan. Brown is an avid runner and bicyclist, and frequent guest at tournaments throughout the U.S. and British Isles. He has represented America at the International Hickory Cup (now Freeman Cup) and is an enduring presence at the Hickory Grail tournaments, held every other year in a true Ryder Cup format; it's Europe vs. America for hickory Golf. He's one of the true gents in the gentlemen's game, and is quietly helping new generations to experience the sport we all love with a touch of the past. Brown is a member of the Nebraska Hickory Golf association, one of the leading regional groups in the United States, and the only one that boasts a hickory golf Hall of Fame. In this episode, we'll explore the wide range of products that Dave oversees and travel vicariously through his exploits in the game.

Lance Corporal Hayward Kimo Hamili Peleiholani was born in Pahoa, Hawaii on June 14, 1950. He started his tour in Vietnam on April 13, 1969 and was killed in action on August 26, 1969. Kimo served with Golf Company 2/7. The trees for Kimo and the Golf Company 2/7 are on the perimeter of Camp Hamilton Veterans Memorial Park, which was founded by MGySgt Glenn Denton (Ret). These Marines are on the perimeter because they are guarding the other veterans in this park - the world - Glenn’s world. L/CPL Peleiholani’s name is on the Vietnam Memorial Wall Panel W19, Line 101.
Private First Class Gerald Allen Smith was born on January 8, 1951 in Ogden, Utah. The 18-year-old Marine started his tour in Vietnam on August 11, 1969. He was killed in action less than three weeks later on August 29th. He served with Golf Company 2/7. Gerald’s name is on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Panel W18, Line 9. His tree at Camp Hamilton is on the western perimeter guarding the trees dedicated to veterans from the Merchant Marines (Pre-World War I) to today.
Corporal David D.L. Young served with Golf Company 2/7 in Vietnam with MGySgt Glenn Denton (ret), founder of Camp Hamilton. D.L. was the leader of the squad. Glenn was D.L's fire team leader. Months later, D.L. would go on R&R and Glenn would be given the leadership of the squad. When he returned, rather than move to a new squad, D.L. became Glenn's fire team leader. Their bond was that strong.

Warning: This episode includes a graphic description of Carl Adams' body. Sgt Carl Adams served with MGySgt Glenn Denton in Golf Company 2/7 in Vietnam. He was killed on the first day of August battle in 1969. It was his remains that Shelton and Denton carried down the hill, the day that the squad became known as the Kool-Aid Kids. Denton was at first excited that they had recovered Sgt Adam's body. Then the cold reality hit him with the gunny's stone-faced reaction.
Warning. This episode includes graphic detail. PFC Richard Shelton's death made a huge impact on MGySgt Glenn Denton's life. He is the reason why Camp Hamilton Veteran Memorial Park exists. Shelton was a part of Denton's squad with the Golf Company in Vietnam. Shelton was killed in action on August 25, 1969. The first of the casualties occurred on August 23. The squad needed 8 people to retrieve 4 bodies from the hill. Denton and Shelton were sent as a team to retrieve Sgt Carl Adams, who also has a tree in the park. Adams' burned body was placed on a poncho and moved down the hill. The retrieval put Shelton into a daze. The 20-year-old had only been in country for 10 days. The next day, "G" 2/7 was sent out on patrol. Shelton was walking point two men ahead of Glenn when he was shot. Shelton's death changed Denton's life forever. For as long as MGySgt Denton lives, he will carry PFC Shelton with him.
PFC Joseph Pinto, USMC, was part of Golf Company 2/7 in Vietnam. Pinto was killed the day after Richard Shelton. On August 26, Denton and his squad were heading out through rice paddies when they were mortared by enemy fire. Many, included Denton, were wounded. Pinto was killed.
PFC Jerry Sylvia was part of the Golf Company 2/7 in Vietnam. He was killed in action on September 6, 1969, by friendly fire. Golf Company hadn't had enemy contact in 2-3 hours. Glenn told the medivac that they were secure. The medivac was supposed to land in the smoke on the perimeter. Everything was going well until a gunship decided to do target practice in the treeline. 19 year old Sylvia was killed.

Nominate a CNN Hero: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/cnn.heroes/2018/nominations/. On Ask Win today (Friday, April 6, 2018), Best-Selling Author, Win C welcomes Steven Bredenkoetter. Steven was born December 7th, 1978 in St. Louis, Missouri. His mother, Peggy, was an office worker and a homemaker, and his father, Bill, worked for a grocery store chain, starting off as a bag boy, and ultimately retiring as senior vice-president of store operations. He has two brothers, Bill and David. Steve entered the military in December 2000. Despite his father’s attempts to talk him into joining the Navy, he instead chose to join the Marine Corps, stating, “If it’s the hardest, why not just start there?” His first deployment was as an infantryman with 2/2 Golf Company. Years later, Steve would still speak of this time here fondly and count himself lucky for the experience. Serving as the platoon radio operator, he valued the time he was able to spend in close proximity to excellent leaders, and he valued the friendships he was able to cultivate while traveling across three continents. The experience of speaking, working, and living with men from a wide variety of social, ethnic, and educational backgrounds continues to influence his approach to personal and business interactions to this day. Upon returning from the initial assault into Iraq in 2003, Steve decided to advance his military career by joining the Force Reconnaissance community. The journey was far from easy. It fact, it was far beyond difficult. But, to hear him tell it, the reward of being in a community of extremely capable men, doing an extremely difficult job, was well worth the effort spent. His second deployment to Iraq was as a reconnaissance marine with 2nd Force Reconnaissance Co. Over the course of seven months, his platoon would execute over ninety missions, clearing and securing over six hundred objectives. It was an exhausting time for him, both physically and mentally, but his experiences there would be invaluable in defining the shape of the man that he would strive to be later in life. Steve would eventually go on to attend the first assessment and selection class for Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). Of the fifty-two candidates who arrived, he would emerge from the two-week vetting as the only one to successfully pass, earning his place in MARSOC. After exiting the military in 2013, Steve would spend most of the next five years deployed as a civilian to one austere environment or another, while also founding and growing his own document editing company, Polished Paper. Michael Burton was born in Detroit and enlisted in 1966 after finishing one year at Grand Valley State College. He spent 8 months in Hawaii as part of the 127th Marine Infantry Regiment, and for a short while was part of their bases tennis team. He was then sent to Vietnam via Okinawa. He spent time in Dong Ha and Kontum, but eventually found his way to his new location near the DMZ as part of the 3rd Marine Division, Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine regiment. He was able to find a friend from college that was with the same unit, and spent his entire time in the field with him. He never saw the enemy, and the engagements he was involved in were from a distance. He talked about the C-rations they got during their time in Vietnam, and how the cigarettes they received were good for bartering. He also talked about the supplemental weapons the soldiers would carry, and what kind of equipment they would bring with them while on duty. He was in the field for two to three weeks before he was wounded by a mortar round. He had several injuries, as did his friend, and he was sent back to the US. Along the way he was treated at a battalion aid station, a hospital boat, and eventually at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital. He spent the rest of his service at the Hospital, and was reunited with his friends from college. He had been a vocal opponent of the war once he was discharged, and has some opinions about the war in Iraq. He also talks about how soldiers who experience war need to seek professional help when they return to civilian life, and that mob mentality needs to be avoided by all soldiers. Personal narrative appended to interview outline.
