Welcome back to another episode of TFB's Behind the Gun Podcast. Today I'd like to introduce all of you to Dave S who not only has a ton of experience in today's topic but also has a lifetime of experience working with small arms and even crew-served weapons as part of the U.S Army. In addition to his skillsets, Dave has also been an avid supporter of both TFB and TFBTV so when the topic of Illinois gun law came up, I could think of no one better to talk to than him. Today Dave is going to take us through the considerably confusing world of firearms ownership in the State of Illinois. While it is indeed possible to own guns in IL, the current laws on the books combined with the culture that's put out by the media mean that a lot of people just don't know what the rules are when it comes to buying, owning, and using firearms in their home state. Dave has spent a lifetime collecting, building, and shooting guns in IL and is here today to help guide us through the processes we'd need to go through if we lived in the state too. So please give your attention and a warm welcome to David S!  David posts about firearms topics and thoughts every Monday on Facebook. If you're interested in speaking with him about any firearms-related topics, you can check out his posts here.

This led him to utilize the ROTC program and attend the University of Richmond. After being commissioned as an Airborne Infantry Officer in the U.S Army. and serving for eight years he landed himself on Wall Street. This was the beginning of Brandon's experience in the financial realm. He worked hard and received his MBA from Duke University.  It was through these years that Brandon began the passion and desire to remove the barriers to capital for veterans. He firmly believes that Veterans make great startup founders because of their experience in service. According to the Small Business Administration, 1 in 10 small businesses in the United States are owned and operated by Veterans. This is despite that less than half a percent of the the U.S. population has served in the military.  Knowing this in 2015 Brandon founded TFX Capital.   Task Force X Capital Management Started in 2015, TFX Capital “invests in service driven, high performing and commercially tested former military and national security leaders.”    Learn More Visit Brandon Shelton's  LinkedIn Profile  Visit Task Force X Capital Management  Check out their Instagram @taskforcexcap VeteranCrowd Network Our "forever promise" is to build the veteran and military spouse community a place to connect and engage. This week's Team Never Quit guest, Shilo Harris, has an amazing story to tell.  He speaks with Marcus about the details of his second deployment with the U.S Army's 10th Mountain Division near Baghdad. Shilo's armored vehicle was struck by an IED, which killed three of his fellow soldiers, injured the driver, and burned a third of his body, causing the loss of his ears, the tip of his nose and three fingers. The explosion also fractured his left collarbone and C-7 vertebrae. As a result, he spent nearly three years recovering and undergoing intensive physical therapy at the burn unit of Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. While there, he was the first soldier to participate in regenerative stem-cell research to regrow his fingers, and later received prosthetic ears, and he has a hilarious story to share about them. Today, Shilo is a motivational speaker, raising awareness for PTSD and serving as an inspiration to fellow soldiers. “Everything in life is a gift. Sometimes it may not be the gift you want, but you realize that your challenges are a new beginning.” In this episode you will hear: • I've been extremely blessed. (17:53) • Me being a burn guy, I have a hard time regulating my body temperature, because the scar tissue acts like wearing a jacket all the time. It just doesn't breathe. (18:50) • [While shopping for a hat, the girl] like a good salesperson, figured she could just size me up. She set that hat on me and popped it down. When she did, both my ears popped off, and hit the floor, bouncing around. (20:06) • I was in a van one day, and there were several wounded warriors, and everybody was missing something. One of the guys looked around and said “Damn, all of us together make like one whole man, maybe two.” (24:47) • My dad, being a veteran, we spent a lot of time at the American Legion. The American Legion out there was kind of like a bar. (25:52) • I knew what I wanted. I wanted combat arms. (33:01) • [In Bagdad] every day, there was an IED that went off in our area somewhere. (39:30) • I could see that my face was charred black, my hair was gone, my ears were gone, my nose was gone, I had blood running out of everything, and I started panicking. (50:29) • I was thinking: “I better get a day off for this.” (51:02) • I spent 48 days in a medically induced coma. (52:51) • [I had given up] and my dad said, “Are you done, soldier?” And it just washed over me, thinking holy crap, I'm a quitter before I even tried to start the fight. Where did my pride go? (55:24) • When he walked out of the room, he [my dad] literally just looked at me and said “Then get your ass up and start doing the work.” And I did. (59:59) • I was actually one of the first individuals to attempt regenerative growth. (66:00) • Faith, regardless of what it is, can get you through your worst days, your darkest moments. (75:17)

On this episode of Broker to Broker, host Marc Summers sits down with a mortgage broker with the Long Gray Lending Team, Jay Bunte.  The two discuss overcoming the difficulties facing brokers, how to get started in the industry, and the importance of “getting over yourself.”  A native Texan, Jay Bunte got his start in the industry after an 8-year term of service in the U.S Army and a prior career in oil and gas. With his interest piqued by friends in the mortgage space, Jay signed up for educational courses, got his license, and began working in the industry.  When it came to learning the technical ins and outs of the industry, Jay was able to draw on his prior military experience and adopt the right mindset. Starting from square one gave Jay an opportunity to learn on the job with a go-get-it mentality. “Nobody wants to fail,” he says, “but you have to get over yourself and try.”  He also says that his people skills made the difference when it came to getting started - but that even there, he had to learn to manage expectations. “Not everyone is going to want to work with you… but once it clicks, things will take off.” Jay also says that communication - even overcommunication - is key. “It was extremely crucial in the military, having great communication,” he says. “But there's a big difference between listening and communicating.” Times:  3:00 - Background  7:00 - Learning on the job  12:00 - Communication is key  18:00 - Biggest broker mistakes 27:00 - Discussing Fuse This episode is sponsored by REMN Wholesale

It also happens to be the most lucrative business in the world in a time where the demand is at the highest and supply is at the lowest. On a personal note, Lisa is an Alaska girl born and raised, married with three kids, is a life-long learner, loves to travel, and sings in a praise band. Those that know Lisa remember a time she helped them and would agree that Lisa's faith is the biggest part of her life. One of her “whys” is that her children will never have an employee mindset, will be life-long learners and continue to find the next version of themselves. The mission at Lisa Williams Co is to bring joy and passion to people's lives through the principles of business building and entrepreneurship. The pillars of her company are faith, family, finance and “Filanthropy”! The “why” behind Lisa's own shift is simple. She was living life less than she knew she was capable of living. She was meant to use her gifts to help others discover theirs. The firm is dedicated to the memory of Lisa's mom Sue Wiese and her dearest friend Elizabeth Meier. She lost both of them to a horrible battle to cancer in the span of 10 months. These were two of the most inspiring and God loving women on the planet. They lived their lives with purpose, a heart for serving others and were lifelong learners until the day they went to heaven. From Lisa: “I won't know until I am up there with them why they are no longer with us, but I will make sure that I live the rest of my life with intention, purpose and discovery. I will grow into the women I was meant to become and my prayer is that our company can help others do the same! This week we sit down to discuss the not so Chinese origins of Disney's Mulan. Speaking of sitting down, we almost had to name this episode "Mulan & The Virgin Wheelchair" which goes to show just how scary this story actually is. We then bring you a very dark case of Lavena Johnson, a female soldier in the U.S Army who died under mysterious circumstances (to say the least). We hope you're ready to be uncomfortable. This week, we're continuing with our countdown of the top 10 most-downloaded episodes of the FourBlock Podcast since it first launched in the fall of 2019. Number four on the countdown is a conversation with former U.S Army officer and author Jason Dempsey, PhD, discusses his own transition, explores the meaning of service, and shares insights from his research on the military to civilian career transition. Jason served for over twenty years in the Army as an infantry officer, deploying twice to Afghanistan and once to Iraq. He last served as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In that capacity he oversaw the Chairman's strategic priority of Keeping Faith with the Military Community and led the development and launch of the Call to Continued Service, an initiative endorsed by all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which encourages members of the military to continue their public service after they take off the uniform. Jason is the co-founder of MILLIE, a company that seeks to empower the community of veteran and military spouse real estate agents and to help military families through the moving process. He is also a Senior Adviser to the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration and an Adjunct Senior Fellow of the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security. Jason has written extensively on Army efforts toward gender integration, the experiences of Hispanics in the military, and our counterinsurgency efforts in Afghanistan. His book, Our Army: Soldiers, Politics and Civil-Military Relations was published by Princeton University Press and was the first major work to delve into the social and political attitudes of the active-duty military. Jason is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and holds a PhD in political science from Columbia University.   ABOUT US Welcome to the FourBlock Podcast, a show that examines veteran career transition and the military-civilian divide in the workplace. Veterans are often unprepared to return home and begin new careers. We call this the Fourth Block.  FourBlock is a national non-profit that has supported thousands of transitioning service members across the nation in beginning new and meaningful careers.  Mike Abrams (@fourblock) is an Afghanistan veteran, founder of FourBlock, and author of two military transition books.
