This is the third in a series examining the rather grim subject of UFO related injuries. While we don’t want to dwell on this aspect of the mystery too extensively, it would be remiss to leave the subject without exploring what happened in Brazil in 1977. The events there were extraordinary, as was the investigation by the Brazilian Air Force. Fortunately, it was not the start of a trend in UFO contact, for had it been, many of us might be considerably more anxious. From April 1977 into 1978, there was a flap over the Amazon Delta in the northeast section of Brazil. Because it involved reports of attacks and injuries, the Brazilian Air Force was moved to put together a special operation to deal with it. It was designated “Operação Prato”, which is Portuguese for “Operation Plate.” Full Text with links: https://podcastufo.com/injured-by-the-ufo-part-iii/

Afrimat's diversification strategy paying off

Openpit miner Afrimat reported an 11% year-on-year increase in operating profit for the six months ended August 31, despite a 9.4% year-on-year decrease in revenue. The company also ended the period with cash and cash equivalents of R330-million, a 170% year-on-year increase. Afrimat declared an interim dividend of 36c a share. “Our diversification strategy proved its worth, most certainly so during the pandemic; our values-based entrepreneurial culture is paying off; and a very strong balance sheet enabled growth. "In effect, a self-closing loop was created by implementing this strategy, using the cash generated by successful operations to pay down debt, and surplus cash to make further acquisitions, which in turn leads to further diversification, which in turn drives further growth,” CEO Andries van Heerden explained during the company’s results presentation on October 29. He added that what had started out as a simple construction materials business had gradually become more sophisticated with the addition of industrial minerals, and then again with the addition of iron-ore. “The potential acquisition of the Nkomati mine will add anthracite to our portfolio, thereby again enhancing our skills and our commodity diversity, while the Coza mining acquisition will further strengthen our iron-ore capacity.” Van Heerden further provided a brief update on Nkomati, saying that, as a large creditor, Afrimat had applied for business rescue proceedings, which was approved by the court. Shareholder approval has also been obtained to proceed with the proposed scheme of arrangement. “This, coupled with the high market demand for high-quality, clean burning anthracite, will add tremendous value to our bulk commodity diversification strategy. High-quality anthracite remains a sought-after product by large smelters in South Africa for metals smelting, fabrication and furnaces.” In respect of Coza, Van Heerden said the high-quality ore resource, which consists of the Jenkins, Driehoekspan and Doornpan mines located close to Afrimat’s Demaneng iron-ore mine in the Northern Cape, would give Afrimat the ability to leverage resources due to its proximity to Demaneng. “This acquisition will also potentially allow for a local product supply agreement to primary steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa, whereas the Demaneng iron-ore mine is solely focused on the export market.” OPERATIONAL REVIEW Afrimat entered the national lockdown with a robust balance sheet, positioning the group well for the uncertainty that lay ahead. “The impact of the lockdown was dampened by the partial reopening of the Demaneng iron-ore mine and certain industrial mineral operations early during the lockdown period,” explained Van Heerden, adding that the reopening was undertaken with utmost care to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all employees. From April 20, Afrimat ramped up its operations according to market demand and in line with government regulations. All operations recovered from the Covid-19 impact and returned to profitability before August. “Our product range is now well diversified and consists of construction materials, including aggregates and concrete-based products; industrial minerals, comprising of limestone, dolomite and silica; and bulk commodities, which is currently made up of iron-ore.” The company’s Demaneng mine continued to make an "excellent" contribution to the group results, delivering a 135% increase in operating profit growth to R325-million. The performance was largely owing to favourable iron-ore pricing during the reporting period. Afrimat’s industrial minerals businesses across all regions delivered satisfactorily results. The segment was, however, affected by the lockdown and experienced a decrease in operating profit of 60% year-on-year to R24.6-million. This while the construction materials segment was impacted considerably by the national lockdown, resulting in no revenue for the month of Ap...

Landaas & Company newsletter  June edition now available. Advisors on This Week’s Show Bob Landaas Kyle Tetting Brian Kilb (with Max Hoelzl, Joel Dresang, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (May 25-29, 2020) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday Markets closed for Memorial Day Tuesday Housing prices continued a gradual climb in March just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Year-to-year comparisons from the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller index showed a 3.9% March increase for the 20-city composite index, which has accelerated every month since August, when the growth rate was 2%. An economist for the index said the impact of the pandemic on house prices should be more noticeable in April’s data. With some businesses beginning to reopen in May, consumer confidence picked up, according to the Conference Board. The business and research group’s survey-based index showed overall outlook improving from April, although consumers’ assessments of current conditions continued to erode, plunging nearly 100 points since the pandemic. A Conference Board economist said concerns remain about financial prospects and inflation, and "the uneven path to recovery and potential second wave are likely to keep a cloud of uncertainty hanging over consumers’ heads.” The Commerce Department reported that new-home sales picked up slightly in April although the volatile indicator was down 19.5% from its 12-year peak in January. Fewer houses at the upper end of prices sold in April, resulting in a 3.6% drop in the median sale price, compared to April 2019. The number of new houses on the market stayed above the level just after the Great Recession but was still 43% below pre-recession highs. Wednesday No major announcements Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims declined slightly for the fifth week in a row but remained historically high. More than 40 million Americans filed new claims for benefits since March 21, according to Labor Department data, representing more than one-fourth of the 156 million people in the labor force. Economists suggest figures are undercounting job loss, considering displaced workers who have not succeeded at filing claims amid overwhelmed state systems. The U.S. economy sank even more than initially estimated in the first quarter, with gross domestic product contracting 5%, The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported. The preliminary estimate was a 4.8% decline. Consumer spending, which drives about 70% of economic activity, declined at an annual rate of 6.8% in the first three months of the year while business investments fell at a 7.9% rate. The government acknowledged that the data couldn’t fully quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had been declared only in the latter weeks of the quarter. The Commerce Department said durable goods orders dropped 17.6% in April following a 16.6% decline in March. Unadjusted for inflation, it was the lowest level of spending on long-lasting manufactured items since the end of 2009. Declines were widespread, led by commercial aircraft and automobiles. From April 2019, orders fell 11.4%. Excluding the volatile transportation category, year-to-year orders sank 2.3%. Pending home sales also fell in April, also for the second month in a row. The National Association of Realtors said its index of pending purchases receded 21.8% from March, the most in 19 years of data. Contracts were down 33.8% from April 2019. The trade association said it expects home sales to bottom out in May before rising again based on affordability of housing, including low mortgage rates. Friday April, the first full calendar month of the pandemic, saw an unprecedented 13.6% drop in consumer spending. Data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed the seasonally adjusted annual rate of spending plunging by $2.9 trillion, or nearly 20% since February. The level of spending sank to its lowest point since September 2014.

From April 2015: Tony, Donna, and Ed remember the fiftieth anniversary of the premiere of My Name is Barbra, an hour of music starring Barbra Streisand, and the first in a series of specials that the Broadway star and future Oscar winner filmed for CBS in the late 1960s. Though it went on to win two Emmys and a Peabody Award, CBS was nervous about My Name is Barbra before it aired. Rather than rely on variety show conventions (such as having guest stars), Streisand chose to perform every musical number in the show by herself. That posed a risk for the network because Streisand was not a household name at the time.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Star Trek Online lifts our spirits with a second helping of the Winter Event, STO honors medical professionals, and a favorite federation ship gets a facelift. Then we open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages!  Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Would you want Rosario Dawson to play Q? What other roles would Dawson be great in? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Rosario Dawson’s Favorite Letter -- or Character? From Christopher Lloyd to Christopher Plummer, Chris Pine to Chris Helmsworth - boy that’s a lot of Chris’s - Star Trek has attracted some outstanding talent. Chrisitian Slater’s cameo in Star Trek VI - another Chris - and Whoopie Goldberg’s recurring role as Guinan in Star Trek: The Next Generation proved to Hollywood stars that a little pushing could land them in their favorite franchise; and Rosario Dawson has taken notice. Dawson sat down with “Variety After Show”’s Audrey Cleo Yap to talk about her role as Allegra Dill on USA’s “Briarpatch”, but the 40 year-old Actor also talked about her desire to be in Star Trek. Dawson is rumored to be playing a part in Disney+’ s popular Star WARS series, “The Mandalorian”, and while she couldn’t confirm the rumor, she mentioned the 2 Star-franchises are bucket list acting jobs. LeVar Burton Gets Coy About Geordie on Picard LeVar Burton is amazing. Whether playing the inspirational Kunta Kinte in the “Roots” miniseries, taking us on a reading adventure via “Reading Rainbow”, or soaring through the galaxy as Geordi LaForge, there isn’t much he can’t do. Well, except maybe keep a secret. Much like his former co-star and close friend, Jonathan Frakes, Burton may have let slip details for an upcoming appearance on Star Trek. Sitting down with ET’s Lauren Zima, Burton all but guaranteed an appearance on “Star Trek: Picard” Anson Mount Talks Pike with Space.com You want a Pike series. We want a Pike series. And yes, Anson Mount wants a Pike series. In an interview with Space.com, the unabashed Trekkie Anson Mount recounted being cast in the role of the iconic Captain, reiterated that actors aren’t decision makers, and didn’t waffle on his thoughts about reprising Pike. Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover Winter is Coming…. Again The days are getting longer again. The birds and the budding trees welcome the sun’s warmth. We gaze out our Shelter-In-Place windows and… “Snowmen are coming down Blue Lozenge lane!” In a completely unexpected move to help players distract themselves from cabin fever, Q’s Winter Wonderland is returning to Star Trek Online. From April 24th to May 4th, on all platforms, players can head back into the Winter Event for all of the usual festive activities. There’s even great news for players who didn’t complete 2019’s Winter Event.  Those players can take this opportunity to continue earning Daily Progress toward the T6 Fe’Ihri Fe’Range Dreadnought Carrier. Just for this special event, though, another prize has been offered. By turning in Ornaments collected in Event activities, players can earn a Lobi Package of 200 Lobi Crystals. This Lobi prize is claimable once per account. Polish up your frosted boots and sharpen your Klingon Ice Fishing Gauntlet, captains. We’ll see you on the snow! STO Honors Medical Workers This past Saturday, April 18th, Star Trek Online invited all players to show their gratitude to medical workers around the world. Players responded by the hundreds, cramming instances of Deep Space Nine’s upper promenade. Decked out in every Star Trek medical uniform you can imagine, and a few you probably can’t, players stood shoulder to shoulder to hold a torch for those risking their health to help the suffering. To see screenshots from many players who joined the demonstration, Trek out Star Trek Online’s Twitter account via the link in our show notes. Hector Ortiz draws the Summer Ships Over the past few weeks, four Star Trek Online development team members tested their skills at designing a Risian Science Vessel for the 2020 Summer Event. On April 15th, concept artist Hector Ortiz finally got his hands on those drawings. On a two hour live stream, which you can now view on STO’s YouTube channel, Hector turned those rough sketches into more polished concepts. While two hours may not be enough for even Hector to create four fully complete concept art drawings, the results were amazing. If you’re looking for something interesting to watch while you’re at home this week, Trek out the video link in our show notes. And keep your eyes on STO’s social media channels. When Hector has finished his concept drawings of all four ships, the final designs will be opened up for community voting. Ships of the Line: Akira On Tuesday,  Ambassador Kael posted a news blog announcing both a new type of C-Store bundle and an updated ship model to launch it. A brand new model and material for the Akira-Class Heavy Escort will be the first ship offered in the new “Ships of the Line” bundle. The bundle, which will cost 6000 Zen, will contain the T6 Alita Heavy Strike Wing Escort, the T5 Armitage Heavy Strike Wing Escort, the T3 Thunderchild Heavy Escort Refit, and one Fleet Ship Module. The new look for the Akira-Class is the most detailed and screen-accurate look for the ship yet, bringing it closer to its appearance in the film Star Trek: First Contact. For a short time, from April 23rd to April 30th at 10am Pacific Time, the new Akira bundle will  be 35% off in the C-Store. For those who already own one of these ship classes, the updated model is available freely in the Ship Customization screen. Thomas Marrone Talks with QueueTimes Thomas Marrone sat down recently with Eric Campbell from QueueTimes, the team that produces the Star Trek Adventures RPG show “Clear Skies”.  For an hour and a half, Cryptic’s Lead Ship and UI Artist chatted about the game, his work, and the process of designing a brand new Galaxy-Class variant for “Clear Skies”. The interview is well worth a watch, so just follow the link. But towards the end of that stream, Thomas took a moment to tease STO players with the reveal of a brand new model for the beloved Klingon Bird of Prey. The new model looks far more detailed and accurate than any Bird of Prey currently in game, even including Klingon script of the ship’s name on the wing. If you’re in a hurry to see the new Bird of Prey, skip ahead in the video to the 1 hour 30 minute mark. EVENTS Starting on April 30th, PC players have an “Item Upgrade” weekend through May 4th. Due to the issues with the event, we are extending the First Contact Day celebration until April 30th on PC and May 7th on Xbox One and Playstation 4. Show #750   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 16th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Firstly huge thanks to JOHN C SOLAR who took the time to send a lovely note about how all this news about a clean, green, sustainable future driving EVs makes him feel good. And thank you John for your kind Patreon support.   VOLKSWAGEN STARTS WITH STEP-BY-STEP RESUMPTION OF PRODUCTION Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand to restart production in Zwickau and Bratislava in the week from April 20 From April 27, successive resumption of production at the other Volkswagen brand plants in Germany, Portugal, Spain, Russia, South Africa, North- and South America. Volkswagen Group Components to expand production step-by-step. 100-point plan for maximum health protection.   "Volkswagen Group's production restart as countries ease coronavirus restrictions will focus on its Zwickau electric-car plant in Germany and its multibrand plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, that builds SUVs for Porsche, VW and Audi." writes Automotive News Europe: "The two factories will resume production on April 20, VW said in a news release on Wednesday.  The Zwickau plant builds the ID3, a key model and the first of its new generation of affordable, long-range electric cars.   VW's plan to reopen plants comes as the German government considers relaxing restrictions next week on some businesses while keeping social distancing rules in place until May 3."   https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagen-starts-with-step-by-step-resumption-of-production-5961   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-focuses-production-restart-key-electric-model   FROM HERBERT DIESS ON LINKEDIN "My new working week starts together with Thomas Ulbrich at the wheel of a Volkswagen ID.3 - our most important project to meet the European CO2-targets in 2020 and 2021.  The Corona Pandemic is a challenge for Sales and Production - but also for our Research & Development. We are fighting hard to keep our timeline for the launches to come. In R&D we are now working in two separate teams: morning and afternoon. We wear masks, keep our distance and follow high hygiene standards. Many meetings are now videoconferences.  And we are making progress: Thomas just had a test drive over 1200 kilometres with several fast charging stops and was very happy with the performance of the ID.3."     TESLA SALES IN CHINA JUMP 450% AS IT BOUNCES BACK FROM CORONAVIRUS "Tesla's China car registrations jumped 450% in March, month on month, data from auto consultancy LMC Automotive showed." reports Reuters: "Tesla's China registrations rose to 12,709 units in March from 2,314 in February. Shares of Tesla surged 12% on Tuesday after Credit Suisse upgraded its rating on the electric carmaker and as Wall Street rallied on optimism the coronavirus outbreak was reaching a plateau. Tesla stock has jumped 28% in the past two days as investors look beyond disruptions caused by the pandemic, which has forced Tesla to close its California factory, furlough workers and cut salaries."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/15/tesla-china-sales-bounce-back/   GM OFFERS CHEVY BOLT EV WITH $4,750 DISCOUNT IN APRIL "In what GM is calling a coronavirus relief package, the company is discounting the purchase of a Chevy Bolt electric car by $4,750 in cash discounts, with 0% APR financing for 72 months. Qualified buyers won’t have to make any payments for 120 days." according to Electrek: "While Electrek confirmed with GM that the 0% financing is for 72 months, it could be negotiable. JD Power wrote that the financing could be extended to 84 months. It also mentioned that the zero-interest deal for a 2020 Bolt EV included no money down, no security deposit, and no payment the first month."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/14/gm-offers-chevy-bolt-ev-with-4750-discount-in-april-no-payments-for-4-months/   2021 MUSTANG MACH-E MIGHT BE MORE POWERFUL THAN FORD THOUGHT "The folks over at the Mach-E Forum just came up with an interesting new set of specifications for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford's promising new battery-electric performance car. Interesting as in more powerful, across the board, than the specs Ford originally offered months ago when the car was revealed. Those specs were listed, and are still listed, as "targeted" numbers, and it seems Ford has managed to outperform its expectations. " says Autoblog: "The 2021 Mach-E specs on Ford's dealer training site (obtained from our dealer source) are now showing an increase in horsepower, torque and kW output specs for all Mach-E trims and models!"  AWD Extended Range: Old: 332 horsepower, 417 lb-ft, 248 kilowatts. New: 346 horsepower, 428 lb-ft , 258 kilowatts"   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/14/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-specifications-more-horsepower-torque/   FORD FILES TRADEMARK FOR FASTOR CHARGE "Ford has filed a trademark for Fastor Charge. The trademark is connected to a fast-charging network similar to Tesla Superchargers." says InsideEVs: "There's nothing in the filing indicating that it's specifically related to fast-charging other than the Fastor Charge name. We should point out that this was filed in 2018 and remains active."   The MachEClub says: "Although Ford has partnered with Electrify America, IONITY, and Electrify Canada for the rollout of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford may be planning to build a fast-charging network of its own, perhaps to bring Level 3 charging capabilities to Ford and Lincoln dealerships or areas that will not be served by its existing charging partners."     TESLA'S 250-KW SUPERCHARGER ONLY SAVED US 2 MINUTES VS. A 150-KW CHARGER "Tesla claims that its new V3 Superchargers support peak charging rates of up to 250 kW, which would equate to replenishing 1000 miles of range per hour. We didn't quite hit those numbers when we took our long-term 2019 Model 3 Long Range to a newly opened 250-kW Supercharger in Michigan City, Indiana, where we we saw a peak of 201 kW and around 810 miles per hour of charge." says Car & Driver: "the 250-kW charger only beats the lesser one in the range between about 10 percent and 50 percent state of charge, where all of the two-minute gain we saw over the entire charge was realized. Above that, the two closely follow the same path as the power necessarily tapers off as the battery level increases."   LOTUS EVIJA CONFIGURATOR UTILIZES GAMING SOFTWARE AND POWERFUL GRAPHICS "The Lotus Evija is Britain’s first-ever all-electric hypercar. And to give potential buyers a taste of what’s to come, Lotus gave us a sneak peek of the Evija’s hi-tech configurator powered by advanced gaming software and crisp graphics. Least to say, this Lotus Evija configurator is among the best we’ve seen for a production car, and it’s one of the most innovative ways to spec your $2.1-million hypercar." says Slash Gear: "Lotus came up with a special configurator that reminds us of our favorite racing games like Gran Turismo and Forza. buyers can view high-definition renderings of the Evija. Using a special imaging technique called ‘ray-tracing’, potential customers can place the vehicle into multiple destinations and environments around the world. According to Lotus, this allows buyers to see how the vehicle looks when exposed to localized sunlight. When the customization process is complete, Lotus will create a personalized 360-degree fly-through video of the car. And since no Evijas are built the same, the film is exclusive to each customer. Also, Lotus will send buyers a ‘unique gift’ at regular intervals during the build process."   https://www.slashgear.com/lotus-evija-configurator-utilizes-gaming-software-and-powerful-graphics-16616994/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How can the EV industry help people get into driving electric cars as soon as this is all over?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 237 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. You might not realize it, but some of our culture’s most beloved figures have died from oral, head, or neck cancer – from Babe Ruth to Sammy Davis, Jr. to George Harrison. But there are also those who survived, like Michael Douglas and Jim Kelly. And working with patients and survivors for over two decades is The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, who launch their 22nd Annual Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week (OHANCA) in April. From April 13th-19th, over 250 hospitals, clinics, and medical offices around the world were scheduled to provide free screening and education. The HNCA can trace its roots to another famous figure to ultimately succumb to throat cancer – those of a certain age will remember Oscar winner Yul Brynner, who made an anti-smoking commercial that aired after his death. Brynner also established the Yul Brynner Foundation, which in 1997 merged with the Association for Head and Neck Cancer Awareness, founded by Dr. Terry Day.
