Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 2nd June. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Rimac Nevera Is A True Electric Hypercar “Croatian electric hypercar manufacturer Rimac is taking its radical C_Two concept into production with a raft of improvements and a new name: Nevera. The culmination of three years of development following the C_Two concept's unveiling in March 2018, the €2 million (£1.72m) Lotus Evija rival has been renamed in tribute to the strong and sudden storms that occur on the Croatian coastline." writes Autocar: "Rimac highlights that the Nevera is 2.5sec quicker to 186mph than was initially planned, needing just 9.3sec. Claimed to be capable of accelerating from rest to 62mph in just 1.85sec and covering a quarter mile in just 8.6sec, the Nevera will be the fastest-accelerating production car yet built and its 258mph top speed puts it roughly on a par with the W16-powered Bugatti Chiron." "Legacy automotive is doing its best as the electric revolution gathers serious momentum but from the land of Tesla – Nikola that is, not Elon Musk’s outfit – comes a company whose new car turns everything you thought you knew about hypercars on its head. Should you still be clinging to the notion that EVs are somehow missing something, prepare to be converted. Forever." is how Top Gear put it: "The car’s architecture encompasses a 6,960-cell, 120kWh Lithium/Manganese/Nickel battery pack in an H shape along the spine and behind the cockpit. There are four surface-mounted permanent magnet motors driving each wheel individually, the most advanced torque vectoring ever achieved and a power output equivalent to 1914bhp and 1,740lb ft of torque. A pair of single-speed gearboxes are connected to the front and rear wheels." "The Nevera’s construction is derived from a central carbonfibre monocoque tub, with aluminium subframes bolted at each end to which the axles are mounted. The battery pack also forms a structural part of the carbon tub itself, adding 37 per cent extra stiffness to the torsional rigidity rating. Suspension is of a double wishbone design at all four corners, with adaptive dampers and an adjustable ride height giving the Nevera increased adjustability within the driver mode systems." says evo magazine: "Like most EVs, braking is dealt with by two systems, with Rimac’s 300kW regeneration capability being the most powerful of any production EV, backed up by a 390mm set of carbon-ceramics discs and six-piston calipers from Brembo. The braking system is entirely by-wire, with a feedback motor built in to the hardware designed to merge brake feel from the two systems into one linear response. " "Rimac’s All-Wheel Torque Vectoring 2 system also helps here, bolstering grip and traction. The tech takes the place of conventional traction and stability control and governs the amount of torque sent to each wheel individually, with the parameters linked to seven different driving modes. These include Sport, Drift, Comfort, Range, Track and two Custom modes." according to Autoexpress: "Sport sharpens the throttle, steering, and brake response and firms up the suspension, while Drift mode “supplies more torque to the rear wheels to accentuate oversteer and help hold the car in a controlled power slide on the track.” Range adjusts the drivetrain to achieve the 340-mile claimed maximum, while Track mode “sets the Nevera to full, unrestrained configuration to help drivers exploit the car’s full potential,” according to Rimac." "Rimac has developed an “AI driving coach” feature that leverages the Nevera’s 12 ultrasonic and six radar sensors, as well as 13 cameras to help “optimize and enhance the driver’s on-track performance.” It does this by providing track-specific audio and visual cues for when to brake for, where to turn into, and when to accelerate out of a corner." according to The Verge: "Of course, very few people will have to worry about whether they can properly pilot a Nevera. Rimac is only making 150 of them, and they’ll each start around $2.4 million." https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/rimac/nevera https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/rimac-ctwo-ev-hypercar-enters-production-1888bhp-nevera https://www.evo.co.uk/news/20434/production-rimac-nevera-revealed-1887bhp-concepttwo-ready-to-go https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/355147/new-rimac-nevera-electric-hypercar-unveiled-1888bhp https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/1/22463499/rimac-nevera-production-c-two-concept-hypercar Headlines Again120kWh battery packfour electric motor1.4MW of power1,914 horsepowertop speed of 258 miles per hourcustom liquid coolingmechanical knobs and switches to feel the car Form follows function - The front bonnet profile, underbody flap, rear diffuser and rear wing can each move independently, driven by complex algorithms that provided the optimum aerodynamic configuration for every driving situation. World’s most advanced monocoque construction -The level of unmatched strength and safety this provides has contributed to the Nevera meeting strict global homologation standards, and delivering the most rigid structure of any car ever made. Driving the futureCapable of instantly summoning maximum torque from the first moment, the Nevera’s electric motors are 97 per cent efficient – compared with 40 per cent for the most effective internal combustion engines – and completely maintenance-free throughout their operating life. Minimalist design cabin, maximum comfort and control -With space for two occupants in full race regalia and their luggage, Nevera is as much a capable grand tourer as it is a performance hypercar. Digital screens soak up needless toggles and switches, leaving only essential tactile controls, giving more space to enjoy Nevera’s carefully designed interior. The cockpit features a trio of high-definition TFT screens, which present as much, or as little, information as the user requires. Configured for both track driving and comfort, the layout of the cockpit is divided into two zones. The focus of the top segment is entirely placed on driving pleasure and performance, while the lower part houses the infotainment system, comfort controls and driving data. Tactile billet aluminium rotary controls and switches – including three displays with rotating control – provide a resolutely analogue feel, tailored to enable the driver to utilise the cutting-edge digital technology in an even more engaging manner. From the cockpit, the driver can monitor every aspect of the car’s performance with real-time telemetry – downloadable to a laptop or smartphone for later review. RIVIAN IS CLOSE TO RAISING FUNDS AT $25 BILLION VALUATION "Rivian Automotive, the electric-truck startup backed by Amazon.com and Ford, is close to raising a new round of funding valuing it at about $25 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. Several existing Rivian investors are participating in the round, which will raise several billion dollars, the people added, asking not to be identified because the matter is private." reports Autoblog: "The new funds would add to the $6 billion Rivian has already raised to date, which makes it one of the most-well capitalized electric vehicle makers. Rivian's 3,000 employees are split between sites in California, metro Detroit and a production facility in Normal, Ill." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/06/rivian-funding-valuation-25-billion/ GM WILL BUILD HONDA, ACURA ELECTRIC CARS IN US AND MEXICO "Automotive News reported Wednesday that GM will build two electric cars for Honda in the near future, citing sources close to the matter. Honda declined to comment directly on the vehicles and manufacturing locations, but said it "looks forward to sharing new information on our North American electrification strategy later this year."" according to CNET: "According to the original report's sources, however, the US automaker will build a new Honda EV in Mexico while an Acura EV will find a manufacturing home in the US. The mysterious Honda EV will supposedly roll off the same assembly line as the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox at the automaker's Ramos Arizpe plant. The Acura EV, meanwhile, will find a home at GM's Spring Hill, Tennessee facility." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/gm-honda-acura-electric-cars-us-mexico/ CATL AIMS FOR 230 GWH PRODUCTION IN 2021 "CATL wants to massively expand its production capacities for battery cells, to 230 GWh this year and to 1,200 GWh in 2025. In parallel, the Chinese battery manufacturer is aiming to expand to Japan, Indonesia, the USA and Europe." writes electrive: "The most recent annual statistics are from 2019, a year in which the Chinese company reached 32.5 GWh. With that capacity, CATL topped the list of largest battery cell manufacturers in 2019, ahead of Japan’s Panasonic (28.1 GWh) and South Korea’s LG Chem (12.4 GWh). At CATL, the expansion of production capacity is to be accompanied by expansion to Japan, Indonesia, the USA and Europe, with Germany playing a key role in the European market. This is marked by the construction of CATL’s first production facility outside China, which has started in Erfurt. The ground was broken at the Germam building site in October 2019, with completion scheduled for 2022. The battery cells produced there will be supplied to BMW and Volkswagen" https://www.electrive.com/2021/01/06/catl-takes-aim-for-a-230-gwh-production-capacity-for-2021/ PRESIDENT OF PANASONIC TALKS TESLA 4680 BATTERY CELL PRODUCTION "When Tesla hosted its Battery Day event, it seemed it may be a very long time before 4680 cells would actually be produced and put into cars. Now, we're learning that wasn't the case. It's only been a few months, and Panasonic is already preparing to make the cells." according to InsideEVs: "Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga recently provided some details about Tesla's proprietary, in-house 4680 cells. He also noted that even though Tesla will eventually produce its own 4680 cells, it will not be competing with Panasonic, its primary battery supplier. This is because, as long as Tesla continues its forward momentum, it will need many more cells that it can produce on its own." Kazuhiro Tsuga said: “We have begun development of a new automotive battery, the 4680, for Tesla in the United States. The electrode structure is difficult because of its high capacity. The electrode structure is difficult because of its large capacity. We will make prototypes in Japan and establish a manufacturing method. High reliability is one of our strengths. There is no concern that Tesla will become a competitor (although Tesla is promoting in-house production of the battery).” Comment - GearsOfWoe • 12 hours ago Interesting QA/QC program. Acquire a few small battery-related companies and threaten to bring production in-house if Panasonic fails to provide the absolute best batteries possible. https://insideevs.com/news/464582/tesla-4680-battery-cell-production-panasonic/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles UK AUTOMOTIVE LOOKS TO GREEN RECOVERY "The UK new car market fell by almost a third (-29.4%) in 2020...It was, however, a bumper year for battery and plug-in hybrid electric cars, which together accounted for more than one in 10 registrations – up from around one in 30 in 2019. Demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) grew by 185.9% to 108,205 units, while registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rose 91.2% to 66,877. Encouragingly, there is room for further growth as most of these registrations (68%) were for company cars, indicating that private buyers need stronger incentives to make the switch, as well as more investment in charging infrastructure, especially public on-street charging. More than 100 plug-in car models are now available to UK buyers, and manufacturers are scheduled to bring more than 35 to market in 2021 – more than the number of either petrol or diesel new models planned for the year. " https://www.smmt.co.uk/2021/01/uk-automotive-looks-to-green-recovery-strategy-after-29-4-fall-in-new-car-registrations-in-2020/ TESLA PROLONGS MODEL Y DELIVERY TIMES "Tesla Inc. customers in China wanting to get the new locally made Model Y are facing a longer wait, signaling strong initial demand for the Shanghai-built crossover." reports AutomotiveNews: "A basic version of the electric vehicle purchased now will be delivered in the second quarter, and a performance variant in the third quarter, Tesla’s website showed. When Tesla announced the price last week and started sales, it said deliveries would take place this month. China is Tesla’s largest market after the U.S., and analysts are predicting the nation will account for a bigger slice of its sales and earnings going forward. “Based on the order intake and our production plan, we have adjusted the Model Y delivery time of latest orders to the second quarter,” a Tesla representative said Thursday via WeChat." https://www.autonews.com/china/tesla-prolongs-model-y-delivery-times-citing-order-intake JAMES MAY CHECKS OUT THE LOTUS EVIJA "DriveTribe’s latest video shows May taking a detailed look at the all-electric Lotus Evija hypercar. You’ll likely know by now that it makes 2,000 horsepower (1,491.4 kilowatts) thanks to an electric motor at each corner. Lotus was unsurprisingly tight-lipped about acceleration figures, but the Grand Tour presenter did reveal that he was told it could sprint to 60 mph (96.5 km/h) in considerably less than three seconds, and 180 mph (289.6 km/h) in less than nine seconds." according to Motor1.com: "as each wheel of the Evija has its own electric motor, the best place for the battery pack is actually behind the driver where you’d expect it in a normal supercar or hypercar. Placing the batteries under the floor – as you’d expect in more pedestrian EVs – wouldn't actually provide optimal weight distribution." https://www.motor1.com/news/464619/james-may-checks-out-lotus-evija/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news ENEL X SIGNED STRATEGIC AGREEMENT WITH WELTMEISTER Following the earlier launch of its first commercial office dedicated to e-Mobility in China, Enel X will support the development of Weltmeister’s charging infrastructure at global level, thus promoting the export of EVs as well as accelerating the development of overseas markets. Enel X and Weltmeister will carry out an in-depth electric mobility cooperation as Enel X will be providing smart charging solutions and one-stop after-sales services for Weltmeister Auto products exported to overseas markets, such as the European Union and Southeast Asia, as well as ensuring that relevant charging facilities meet the requirements of local charging standards, policies, and regulations. Furthermore, the two companies will explore the integration of V2G technology in Europe, allowing customers to lower the cost of ownership of an electric vehicle while offering a potential backup power source. https://www.enelx.com/en/news-and-media/press/2020/12/-enel-x-signed-strategic-agreement-with-weltmeister-to-boost-electric-vehicle-exports- AMAZON'S WEMBLEY STATION ROLLS OUT FLEET OF 100 ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS "An Amazon delivery station in Wembley has rolled out a fleet of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles to make deliveries. The online giant has revved up 100 vans as part of its Climate Pledge, Amazon’s commitment to be net zero carbon by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050." says Kilburn Times.co.uk: "In August Amazon announced plans to add more than 1,800 electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans to its EU delivery fleet, including more than 500 in the UK. In the Wembley delivery station, small independent logistics companies also have access to the zero-emission vehicles to make deliveries to Amazon customers, helping to save tens of thousands of metric tons of carbon." https://www.kilburntimes.co.uk/news/amazon-wembley-launches-mercedes-benz-fleet-6877408 QUESTION OF THE WEEK EV tech is on a rip, but is the constant improvement around an EV a possible reason NOT to buy one? Lotus chassis guru and GT racer Gavan Kershaw is the special guest on this week’s Auto Express podcast. He reveals the secrets of Lotus’ development and discusses the forthcoming Evija electric hypercar. The rest of the team, including Vicki Butler-Henderson, John McIlroy and James Brodie dissect the week’s biggest news stories, including the BMW iX3, new VW Golf R and what the future holds for Aston Martin. Once again, Hugo Griffiths is on hand to answer more of your motoring questions.
Joe and Carter discuss the new New BMW M3 and M4, the Lotus Evija, and some additions to the Bronco lineup.
Hypercars are as common as Netflix today, so we thought to discuss the new “shows” being released, such as the Mercedes AMG One and Lotus Evija. Tesla and Rivian have a bit of a rustle and tussle going on; which we explore. We also ask ourselves whether...
#McLarenF1 #gordonmurray #t50 Gordon Murray, Lotus, Adrian Newey, Colin Chapman, Ayrton Senna, Lotus, McLaren, Brabham y Chaparral. (NSFW) Ford debuted the new Bronco, and we talked a lot about it. FCA tried to steal the Bronco's thunder by showing us a V8 Jeep Wrangler. We had no idea they were still building the Sonic, but we do know the Lotus Evija will attempt to hit super sonic speeds. We also talked about the moment we, individually, were accepted in the car community, and shared the stories you sent in. We couldn't pick one winner, so we picked 2. Congratulations to AJ and Kitt!

Show #750 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 16th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Firstly huge thanks to JOHN C SOLAR who took the time to send a lovely note about how all this news about a clean, green, sustainable future driving EVs makes him feel good. And thank you John for your kind Patreon support. VOLKSWAGEN STARTS WITH STEP-BY-STEP RESUMPTION OF PRODUCTION Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand to restart production in Zwickau and Bratislava in the week from April 20 From April 27, successive resumption of production at the other Volkswagen brand plants in Germany, Portugal, Spain, Russia, South Africa, North- and South America. Volkswagen Group Components to expand production step-by-step. 100-point plan for maximum health protection. "Volkswagen Group's production restart as countries ease coronavirus restrictions will focus on its Zwickau electric-car plant in Germany and its multibrand plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, that builds SUVs for Porsche, VW and Audi." writes Automotive News Europe: "The two factories will resume production on April 20, VW said in a news release on Wednesday. The Zwickau plant builds the ID3, a key model and the first of its new generation of affordable, long-range electric cars. VW's plan to reopen plants comes as the German government considers relaxing restrictions next week on some businesses while keeping social distancing rules in place until May 3." https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagen-starts-with-step-by-step-resumption-of-production-5961 https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-focuses-production-restart-key-electric-model FROM HERBERT DIESS ON LINKEDIN "My new working week starts together with Thomas Ulbrich at the wheel of a Volkswagen ID.3 - our most important project to meet the European CO2-targets in 2020 and 2021. The Corona Pandemic is a challenge for Sales and Production - but also for our Research & Development. We are fighting hard to keep our timeline for the launches to come. In R&D we are now working in two separate teams: morning and afternoon. We wear masks, keep our distance and follow high hygiene standards. Many meetings are now videoconferences. And we are making progress: Thomas just had a test drive over 1200 kilometres with several fast charging stops and was very happy with the performance of the ID.3." TESLA SALES IN CHINA JUMP 450% AS IT BOUNCES BACK FROM CORONAVIRUS "Tesla's China car registrations jumped 450% in March, month on month, data from auto consultancy LMC Automotive showed." reports Reuters: "Tesla's China registrations rose to 12,709 units in March from 2,314 in February. Shares of Tesla surged 12% on Tuesday after Credit Suisse upgraded its rating on the electric carmaker and as Wall Street rallied on optimism the coronavirus outbreak was reaching a plateau. Tesla stock has jumped 28% in the past two days as investors look beyond disruptions caused by the pandemic, which has forced Tesla to close its California factory, furlough workers and cut salaries." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/15/tesla-china-sales-bounce-back/ GM OFFERS CHEVY BOLT EV WITH $4,750 DISCOUNT IN APRIL "In what GM is calling a coronavirus relief package, the company is discounting the purchase of a Chevy Bolt electric car by $4,750 in cash discounts, with 0% APR financing for 72 months. Qualified buyers won’t have to make any payments for 120 days." according to Electrek: "While Electrek confirmed with GM that the 0% financing is for 72 months, it could be negotiable. JD Power wrote that the financing could be extended to 84 months. It also mentioned that the zero-interest deal for a 2020 Bolt EV included no money down, no security deposit, and no payment the first month." https://electrek.co/2020/04/14/gm-offers-chevy-bolt-ev-with-4750-discount-in-april-no-payments-for-4-months/ 2021 MUSTANG MACH-E MIGHT BE MORE POWERFUL THAN FORD THOUGHT "The folks over at the Mach-E Forum just came up with an interesting new set of specifications for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford's promising new battery-electric performance car. Interesting as in more powerful, across the board, than the specs Ford originally offered months ago when the car was revealed. Those specs were listed, and are still listed, as "targeted" numbers, and it seems Ford has managed to outperform its expectations. " says Autoblog: "The 2021 Mach-E specs on Ford's dealer training site (obtained from our dealer source) are now showing an increase in horsepower, torque and kW output specs for all Mach-E trims and models!" AWD Extended Range: Old: 332 horsepower, 417 lb-ft, 248 kilowatts. New: 346 horsepower, 428 lb-ft , 258 kilowatts" https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/14/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-specifications-more-horsepower-torque/ FORD FILES TRADEMARK FOR FASTOR CHARGE "Ford has filed a trademark for Fastor Charge. The trademark is connected to a fast-charging network similar to Tesla Superchargers." says InsideEVs: "There's nothing in the filing indicating that it's specifically related to fast-charging other than the Fastor Charge name. We should point out that this was filed in 2018 and remains active." The MachEClub says: "Although Ford has partnered with Electrify America, IONITY, and Electrify Canada for the rollout of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford may be planning to build a fast-charging network of its own, perhaps to bring Level 3 charging capabilities to Ford and Lincoln dealerships or areas that will not be served by its existing charging partners." TESLA'S 250-KW SUPERCHARGER ONLY SAVED US 2 MINUTES VS. A 150-KW CHARGER "Tesla claims that its new V3 Superchargers support peak charging rates of up to 250 kW, which would equate to replenishing 1000 miles of range per hour. We didn't quite hit those numbers when we took our long-term 2019 Model 3 Long Range to a newly opened 250-kW Supercharger in Michigan City, Indiana, where we we saw a peak of 201 kW and around 810 miles per hour of charge." says Car & Driver: "the 250-kW charger only beats the lesser one in the range between about 10 percent and 50 percent state of charge, where all of the two-minute gain we saw over the entire charge was realized. Above that, the two closely follow the same path as the power necessarily tapers off as the battery level increases." LOTUS EVIJA CONFIGURATOR UTILIZES GAMING SOFTWARE AND POWERFUL GRAPHICS "The Lotus Evija is Britain’s first-ever all-electric hypercar. And to give potential buyers a taste of what’s to come, Lotus gave us a sneak peek of the Evija’s hi-tech configurator powered by advanced gaming software and crisp graphics. Least to say, this Lotus Evija configurator is among the best we’ve seen for a production car, and it’s one of the most innovative ways to spec your $2.1-million hypercar." says Slash Gear: "Lotus came up with a special configurator that reminds us of our favorite racing games like Gran Turismo and Forza. buyers can view high-definition renderings of the Evija. Using a special imaging technique called ‘ray-tracing’, potential customers can place the vehicle into multiple destinations and environments around the world. According to Lotus, this allows buyers to see how the vehicle looks when exposed to localized sunlight. When the customization process is complete, Lotus will create a personalized 360-degree fly-through video of the car. And since no Evijas are built the same, the film is exclusive to each customer. Also, Lotus will send buyers a ‘unique gift’ at regular intervals during the build process." https://www.slashgear.com/lotus-evija-configurator-utilizes-gaming-software-and-powerful-graphics-16616994/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK How can the EV industry help people get into driving electric cars as soon as this is all over? This week's podcast is a little different. We've recorded it in the backseat of the Mercedes-Maybach S650. This is the most luxurious version of the S-Class you can get your hands on: it is more spacious, packs more luxury and gets a V12 engine. Safe to say we were very, very comfortable while recording this podcast. This week also saw the unveil of the Lotus Evija. It's a fully electric hypercar from Lotus, however it is a departure from the company's legacy of making lightweight, quick and affordable cars. We're finally allowed to tell you what we think of the new Kia Seltos! We've driven it in Korea, and finally in India too. It seems to be a promising package but it will need to be prices right for it to work. We also talk about what's coming next for us: the launch of the BMW X7, 7 Series and the Porsche Macan!
The new 8th generation Corvette has finally been revealed! But so has the crazy, new Lotus Evija electric hypercar. The guys take time to rant, and offer their take on both cars that are changing the automotive landscape. They debate roadtrip cars for Petar in Bulgaria, and among many good ones, a social media question asking if the phrase ‘no replacement for displacement’ should be retired? Season 5 is now airing on the Motor Trend network through September 2019, Season 4 is available on Amazon Prime and Vimeo worldwide. Please rate and review the podcast on iTunes, the Everyday Driver show on IMDB and Amazon, and write to us with your Topic Tuesday discussions and podcast debates at everydaydrivertv@gmail.com or everydaydriver.com. Show #530 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. An update on the podcast disappearing from Spotify: “This is a Spotify issue. All the podcast web browser links do not work currently on Spotify. Spotify is aware of the issue and they are working on a fix.” 2020 LOTUS EVIJA EV HYPERCAR DEBUTS WITH NEARLY 2,000 HP "When Lotus began teasing its new Evija electric hypercar, we were told it would blow our minds. It’s now revealed, and yes, the stats are indeed very impressive." according to Motor1.com: "The Evija is the first new product to come from Lotus since joining the expanding Geely automotive network, and if these figures hold true for the 130 road-going examples slated to begin production next year, it will be one heck of a performer. Lotus says the Evija will boast no less than 1,973 horsepower (1,471 kilowatts), sent to the pavement through four electric motors capable of generating 493hp (368 kW) each. Lotus says the Evija will sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 3 seconds. While certainly fast, that figure doesn’t sound terribly impressive when you consider many gasoline-powered hypercars can run faster with much less power, not to mention Tesla Model S P100d. Lotus says the two-seater needs just another 3 seconds to hit 200 km/h (124 mph), and...it will hit 300 km/h (186 mph) in less than 9 seconds." Lotus says:" As a name, Evija (pronounced ‘E-vi-ya’) means ‘the first in existence’ or ‘the living one’. Hethel, close to the historic city of Norwich in the east of England, UK, has been the home of Lotus since 1966. The company has confirmed production of the Evija will begin there during 2020. The Evija is the first Lotus road car to feature a one-piece carbon fibre monocoque chassis. The cabin, from the fully adjustable race-style seats to the multi-function steering wheel. The Active aerodynamics are deployed in the form of a rear spoiler, which elevates from its resting position flush to the upper bodywork, and an F1-style Drag Reduction System (DRS). Both are deployed automatically in Track mode, though can be deployed manually in other modes. The absence of traditional door mirrors plays a part in reducing drag. Access to the cabin is through the two dihedral doors. Handle-free to preserve the sculpted exterior, they’re operate via the key fob. It’s the first time Lotus has used such doors, and while they make for a moment of dramatic theatre they also provide maximum space for getting in and out. Cameras integrated into the front wings are electronically deployed on unlock, while another camera built into the roof provides a central view. Images are displayed on three interior screens. It also supports fast and convenient servicing and maintenance. Furthermore, the set-up has been designed so that in the future alternative battery packs – for example, to optimise track performance – can be easily installed. Evija is priced from £1.5m-2m plus duties and taxes. A £250,000 refundable deposit secures a production slot. Order books are now open through www.lotuscars.com." It's 8 times more powerful than a Formula E car. And yes it has an app, yes it does OTA updates! https://www.motor1.com/news/360174/lotus-evija-ev-hypercar-debuts/ THIS RECORD-SETTING TESLA MODEL S HAS 900,000 KILOMETERS ON ODOMETER "Hansjörg Gemmingen, known in the EV world for setting the mileage record for the first-generation Tesla Roadster (620,000 km / 385,251 miles), just set another milestone, but this time in a Tesla Model S." reports InsideEVs: "Gemmingen has already covered 900,000 km (559,350 miles) according to two images shared on July 14. The Model S P85 (one of the oldest versions) is reportedly running on its second battery pack. That's a remarkable amount of miles for any car and few gasoline-engined cars would go that far without an engine replacement. What's even more impressive is that someone actually drives this much and choose a Tesla to do so." https://insideevs.com/news/359939/tesla-model-s-900000-kilometers-odometer/ CHINA'S ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POSTS SURPASSED 1 MILLION IN JUNE "With China all in with electric vehicles, the number of charging posts around the country have been exploding. reports Interesting Engineering: "According to the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance as of the end of June, the number of charging posts has surpassed 1 million. According to Xinhua, the official state-run press agency of the People's Republic of China the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance said charging posts have seen year-over-year growth of 69.3%. China added 140,000 new public charging posts during the last year with amounts to about 11,700 new posts introduced each month." https://interestingengineering.com/chinas-electric-vehicle-charging-posts-surpassed-1-million-in-june RAPID CHARGING POINTS 'SHOULD' OFFER CARD PAYMENT OPTION BY 2020 More news from the UK: "The government wants all new electric vehicle rapid charging points to offer drivers the ability to pay using a credit or debit card by next year." says the UK edition of Motor1.com: "In an announcement, the Department for Transport (DfT) said all new charge points “should” offer the facility by the spring of 2020. The government says it “expects” the charging industry to develop a “pay-as-you-go” payment option across the charging network, ensuring drivers do not need a range of smartphone apps or membership cards to charge their vehicles. While the DfT’s statement does not explicitly say companies will be required to offer card payment by next spring, the government has warned the industry that it will “intervene” if it feels “the market is too slow to deliver improvements across the entire network”. However, one charging provider, BP Chargemaster, has already promised to introducing card payment on all new 50kW and 150kW chargers from today (July 15). It will also retrofit the technology to its existing rapid chargers over the coming year." https://uk.motor1.com/news/359832/rapid-charging-points-card-payments/ VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 ELECTRIC CAR SPOTTED IN NEW ZEALAND "The Volkswagen ID.3 electric hatchback has been spotted in public once again. This time, the ID.3 turned up in the unexpected location of Queenstown, New Zealand." says InsideEVs, and thank you to someone who occasionally sends me shots he's taken from NZ, I won't say this name but he knows who he is! "the ID.3 is being tested in New Zealand by "a few German blokes" whose faces have been concealed. Judging by the dirt on one of the cars, there's been some off-the-beaten-path travel involved." Forum member Jose Garzon said: "The photo was taken in Queenstown therefore near Wanaka where SHPG (Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds) is based. Plenty of tracks there for winter testing specially calibration. Nowadays development timings are shorter so if possible, companies will either travel north or south to find the corresponding climate to keep their work unstopped. If you want to see it from the positive point of view, this images mean they are performing their final winter fine-tuning activities. On the other hand it can mean, "crap, this is not working and we need to launch the car, send the car to NZ and get it right"" https://insideevs.com/news/360148/vw-id3-spy-new-zealand/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA PETITIONS FOR FIRST-EVER EMOJI IN SUPPORT OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES As modern-day communication evolves, emojis continue to grow in popularity, with 230 new characters being added to major platforms in 2019. As such, it’s important that they be representative of today’s world, which increasingly includes electric vehicles and the stations that charge them. That’s why Electrify America – with its network of ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles – has submitted a formal proposal to the Unicode Consortium, the governing body for emoji creation, to introduce the first-ever “Electric Vehicle With Charger” emoji for smartphone keyboards. COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… Should all chargers be open to everyone, or is it OK to have walled gardens? I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #509 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 25th June 2019. BMW VOWS TO REV UP ELECTRIC CAR ROLLOUT "German high-end carmaker BMW said Tuesday it would accelerate its plans to build new electric models, as the whole industry comes under pressure to meet strict emissions regulations.: said Yahoo News today: "The Munich-based manufacturer will offer 25 electrified vehicles in 2023, "two years earlier than originally planned," chief executive Harald Krueger said in a statement. Of those, more than half will be all-electric while the remainder will be hybrids, BMW said." Meanwhile Motor1.com says: "It’s a big day at BMW. Today the company is hosting the NextGen Conference at its headquarters in Germany. There, the Vision M Next concept (which could make it to production), 5 Series experimental electric vehicle, and E-Box electric motorcycle debuted. But there's still more news coming out of Munich. BMW Chief of Engineering, Klaus Frohlich, in a roundtable interview with journalists, including Senior Editor Jeff Perez, says BMW's M division is betting big on battery power. The company will introduce plug-in hybrid M performance vehicles in the near future." "The BMW M Next concept is unquestionably the highlight of the company's big "Next" conference. It looks like a modern M1 and has a 600 horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain, so how could it not? Yet BMW also revealed something with an even more powerful and potentially more interesting powertrain, and it was wrapped up in a current BMW 5 Series body." writes Autoblog: "There are a couple other interesting tidbits about Project BEV, such as the fact that BMW got everything packaged into the 5 Series without taking up passenger space. That's seriously impressive that BMW could get three motors and their accompanying batteries, cooling equipment and more stuffed into a production car that was never designed for it in the first place." And finally via Automotive News Europe: This year, the automaker will start production of the electric Mini at its plant in Oxford, England. This will be followed in 2020 by the electric BMW iX3 midsize SUV, to be built in Shenyang, China, for global markets. Following in 2021 will be the iNEXT crossover, which will be made in Dingolfing, Germany, and the i4 midsize sedan, set to be assembled in Munich. BMW currently offers plug-in hybrid versions of the 3- and 7-series sedans and X3 and X5 crossovers. This summer, the company will release plug-in hybrid versions of the 5 series and 2-series Active Tourer with next-generation technology and a longer electric range. These will be followed next year by the X1 and 3-series Touring plug-in hybrids." https://news.yahoo.com/bmw-vows-rev-electric-car-rollout-083048012.html https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/25/bmw-5-series-711-horsepower-electric-monster/ https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/bmw-plug-hybrids-automatically-switch-ev-mode-2020 THE LIGHTYEAR ONE IS A SOLAR-POWERED CAR WITH AN EYE-WATERING PRICE "Dutch clean mobility company Lightyear today debuted its long-range prototype, the Lightyear One, with a range of 725 km (450 miles) and a small battery that can be charged directly via sunlight, or from conventional charging stations." reports Engadget: "The idea is that you could take the car on long roadtrips because it isn't dependent on charging infrastructure the way that traditional electric vehicles like Teslas are. The solar panels add an additional charge of up to 12 km/hour (7.5 miles/hour)." "The reservation fee for one of the first 500 cars is a hefty €119,000, equivalent to $135,000, and delivery isn't expected until 2021. This makes the Lightyear more of a purchasable concept than a production vehicle. But if you've got a spare few hundred thousand dollars lying around and you want to help Lightyear publicly test their first production car, now you have another option for environmentally friendly transport." the Verge says: "It will support up to 60kW of fast charging, giving it 507 km of range per hour of charge. The car has a total of four electric motors, which will allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmh in 10 seconds. Lightyear was founded by a group of former University of Eindhoven students who won the World Solar Challenge race with their “Stella” solar cars." Lightyear Says: "“Unlike conventional solar panels, our cells function independently. This means that even if part of the roof or hood is in shadow, the other cells continue to efficiently collect solar energy. In fact, our solar cells provide about 20% more energy than traditional ones.” https://www.engadget.com/2019/06/25/solar-powered-car-lightyear-one/ https://newdawn.lightyear.one/ TESLA TO OFFER COLLISION REPAIR AT SERVICE CENTERS AND THROUGH MOBILE SERVICE "Tesla’s Mobile Service and Service Centers are now performing on-site and in-house collision repairs to include paint scuffs, scratches, minor dents, and bolt-on replacements such as bumpers, fenders, doors, and side mirrors. Moving to expand repairs done directly by Tesla ensures quality work, quick service, and transparent pricing for owners of its all-electric vehicles." according to Teslarati: "These latest options can be scheduled using the Tesla app via the “Collision Repair” option under the Service menu." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-collision-repair-bodyshop-mobile-service-centers/ THE NEW LOTUS ELECTRIC HYPERCAR COULD BE CALLED 'EVIJA' "When Lotus first unveiled its plans for an all-new, all-electric hypercar back in April, code named Type 130, a good number of you balked at the name. Don’t expect that to stick around, though. The car will almost certainly bear a name-name, and it could very well be the Lotus Evija." says Jalopnik: "The Lotus Evija makes sense, too, as all of Lotus’s cars have begun with the letter “E” since 1956, according to Auto Express. Examples include the Esprit, Evora, Elise, Exige and Elan. " https://jalopnik.com/the-new-lotus-electric-hypercar-could-be-called-evija-1835834459 2019 NISSAN LEAF E+ PRICED FROM £35,895 IN THE UK Prices for the new range-topping Nissan LEAF e+ Tekna start from £35,895, including the £3,500 Government Grant. With the Nissan LEAF e+, the newly-developed 62kWh battery pack offers 55% more capacity and approximately 25% improvement in energy density while retaining a similar shape and size to the 40kWh LEAF battery pack. This has given the LEAF e+ a significantly increased driving range of up to 239 miles (WLTP combined mode) on a single battery charge. Nissan PR says: "Fine-tuned since the launch of the original LEAF in 2011, an internal thermal management system is also installed in every LEAF, ensuring that fast charging performance is optimised for specific driving conditions. The system also ensures that the quality and longevity of the battery is maximised, giving customers peace of mind and high levels of performance" COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
