To me the most prevalent theme of ECCLESIASTES is that all men & women are on a search for Significance, a search for meaning & purpose to their life. Hence , the title of this book.Perhaps today in March 2024, you have come across this Podcast at the Kingdom Corner. I am believing it is not by accident , today & moving forward as we begin a journey through my devotional book it is my heart-felt desire & prayer God will begin to reveal to you Your Purpose, Your Significance as it were. Having said that sometimes finding out just what is important & significant is not always easily recognized or self-evident so allow yourself to begin to have a new awareness of what happens in your life day to day, even the simple things may hold new meaning for you…Just trust ABBA and he will show you the way!Lastly, when I penned this...

The resorts were, as they are today, big, snowy, and fun. But they were not great businesses. Bankruptcy threatened. And the ski media – Skiing, Powder – was mostly dismissive. This was the dawn of the freeskiing era, and the cool kids were running the Circuit of Radness: Snowbird, Squaw, Mammoth, Jackson Hole, Whistler, the Powder Highway. Vail was for suburban dads from Michigan. Beaver Creek was for suburban dads from New York. If you wanted the good stuff, keep moving until you got to Crested Butte or Telluride. Vail was just another big Colorado ski resort, that happened to own another big Colorado ski resort, and that was it.Today, Vail is the largest ski company in history, with (soon to be) 41 resorts scattered across three continents. Its Epic Pass transformed and stabilized the industry. It is impossible to talk about modern lift-served North American skiing without talking about Vail Resorts. There was nothing inevitable about this. Pete Seibert, Vail’s founder, did not enter skiing with some snowy notion of Manifest Destiny. He just wanted to open a great ski resort. It was 18 years from Vail Mountain’s 1962 opening to the opening of Beaver Creek in 1980. It was nearly two more decades until Vail bought Keystone and Breck in 1997. It was 11 more years until the Epic Pass debuted, and a few more before anyone started to pay attention to it.What Snow Partners, led by Joe Hession, is doing right now has echoes of Vail 15 years ago. They are building something. Quietly. Steadily. Like trees growing in a forest. They rise slowly but suddenly they tower over everything.I’m not suggesting that Snow Partners will be the next Vail. That they will buy Revelstoke and Jackson Hole and Alta and launch the Ultimo Pass to compete with Epic and Ikon. What Snow Partners is building is different. Additive. It will likely be the best thing to ever happen to Vail or Alterra. Snow Partners is not digital cameras, here to crush Kodak. They are, rather, skiing’s Ben Franklin, who believed every community in America should have access to books via a lending library. In Snow Partners’ version of the future, every large city in America has access to skiing via an indoor snowdome. This will change everything. Everything. In profound ways that we can only now imagine. The engine of that change will be the tens of millions of potential new skiers that can wander into a Big Snow ski area, learn how to ski, and suddenly train their radar on the mountains. Texas has a population of around 29.5 million people. Florida has about 22 million. Georgia has around 11 million. Those 61.5 million people have zero in-state ski areas between them. They could soon have many. There are countless skiers living in these states now, of course, refugees from the North or people who grew up in ski families. But there are millions more who have never skied or even thought about it, but who would, given the option, at least try it as a novelty. And that novelty may become a hobby, and that hobby may become a lifestyle, and that lifestyle may become an obsession. As anyone reading this knows, there’s a pretty direct line between those first turns and the neverending lines rolling on repeat in your snow-obsessed brain. But you have to link those first couple turns. That’s hard. Most people never get there. And that’s where Big Snow, with its beginner zone loaded with instructors and sculpted terrain features – a system known as Terrain Based Learning – is so interesting. It not only gives people access to snow. It gives people a way to learn to love it, absent the broiling frustration of ropetows and ice and $500 private instructors. It’s a place that creates skiers. This – Big Snow, along with an industry-wide reorientation toward technology – is Hession’s vision. And it is impossible not to believe in his vision. Hession announces in this podcast that the company has secured funding to build multiple Big Snow ski areas within the foreseeable future. The combination of beginner-oriented slopes and simple, affordable packages has proven attractive even in New Jersey, where skiers have access to dozens of outdoor ski areas within a few hours’ drive. It makes money, and the business model is easily repeatable.Mountain Creek, where Hession began working as a parking lot attendant in his teens, is, he says, a passion project. The company is not buying anymore outdoor ski areas. But when Big Snows start minting new skiers by the thousands, and perhaps the millions, they may end up driving the most profound change to outdoor ski areas in decades. What we talked aboutThe nascent uphill scene at Mountain Creek; “most people don’t realize that this is what New Jersey looks like”; celebrating Big Snow’s re-opening; the three things everyone gets wrong about Big Snow; the night of the fire that closed the facility for seven months; how the fire started and what it damaged; three insurance companies walk into a bar…; why six weeks of work closed the facility for more than half a year; staying positive and mission-focused through multiple shutdowns at a historically troubled facility; New Jersey’s enormous diversity; skiing in Central Park?; “we’re creating a ski town culture in the Meadowlands in New Jersey”; everyone loves Big Snow; the story behind creating Big Snow’s beginner-focused business model; why most people don’t have fun skiing and snowboarding; the four kinds of fun; what makes skiing and snowboarding a lifestyle; what Hession got really wrong about lessons; the “haphazard” development of most ski areas; more Big Snows incoming; why Big Snow is a great business from a financial and expense point of view; looking to Top Golf for inspiration on scale and replicability; where we could see the next Big Snow; how many indoor ski domes could the United States handle?; what differentiates Big Snow from Alpine-X; whether future Big Snows will be standalone facilities or attached to larger malls; is American Dream Mall too big to fail?; finding salvation from school struggles as a parking lot attendant at Vernon Valley Great Gorge; Action Park; two future ski industry leaders working the rental shop; Intrawest kicks down the door and rearranges the world overnight; a “complicated” relationship with Mountain Creek; Intrawest’s rapid decline and the fate of Mountain Creek; leaving your dream job; ownership under Crystal Springs; how a three-week vacation will change your life; transforming Terrain Based Learning from a novelty to an empire; “I’ve been fascinated with how you go from working for a company to owning a company”; the far-flung but tightly bound ski industry and how Hession ended up running Big Snow; how much the Big Snow lease costs in a month; an Austin Powers moment; this is a technology company; an anti-kiosk position; the daily capacity of Mountain Creek; buying Mountain Creek; the art of operating a ski area; the biggest mistake most Mountain Creek operators have made; the bargain season pass as business cornerstone; “we were days away from Vail Resorts owning Mountain Creek today”; bankruptcy, Covid, and taking control of Mountain Creek and Big Snow in spite of it all; how much money Mountain Creek brings in in a year; “a lot of people don’t understand how hard it is to run a ski resort”; a monster chairlift project on the Vernon side of Mountain Creek; “a complicated relationship” with the oddest lift in the East ( the cabriolet) and what to do about it; “no one wants to take their skis on and off for a 1,000 feet of vertical”; which lift from Mountain Creek’s ancient past could make a comeback; bringing back the old Granite View and Route 80 trails; why expansion beyond the historic trail network is unlikely anytime soon; Creek’s huge natural snowmaking advantage; why no one at Mountain Creek “gives high-fives before the close of the season”; Hession is “absolutely” committed to stretching Creek’s season as long as possible; the biggest job of a ski resort in the summertime; the man who has blown snow at Mountain Creek for 52 years; whether Snow Operating would ever buy more outdoor ski resorts; “variation is evil”; the large ski resort that Hession tried to buy; “I don’t think anyone can run a massive network of resorts well”; an Applebee’s comparison; whether Mountain Creek or Big Snow could ever join a multi-mountain ski pass; why the M.A.X. Pass was a disaster for Mountain Creek; why Creek promotes the Epic and Ikon Passes on its social channels; changing your narrative; not a b******t mission statement; why the next decade in the ski industry may be the wildest yet; and the Joe P. Hession Foundation. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interviewI’ll admit that it can be awfully hard to appreciate the potential of Big Snow from the point of view of the casual observer. For anyone living in the New York metro area, the place spent a decade and a half as a vacant laughingstock, a symbol of excess and arrogance, an absurdly expensive novelty that was built, it seemed, just to be torn down. As I wrote last year:On Sept. 29, 2004, a coalition of developers broke ground on a project then known as Meadowlands Xanadu. Built atop a New Jersey swamp and hard by Interstate 95, the garish collection of boxes and ramps with their Romper Room palette could be seen from the upper floors of Manhattan skyscrapers, marooned in their vast asphalt parking lot, an entertainment complex with no one to entertain. It sat empty for years. Crushed, in turn, by incompetence, cost overruns, the Great Recession, lawsuits, and funding issues, the building that would host America’s first indoor ski slope melted into an eternal limbo of ridicule and scorn.I didn’t think it would ever open, and I didn’t understand the point if it did. This is the Northeast – we have no shortage of skiing. At four acres on 160-foot vertical drop, this would instantly become the smallest ski area in nine states. Wow. What’s the next item in your master development plan: an indoor beach in Hawaii? But eventually Big Snow did open: 5,545 days after the center’s groundbreaking. And it was not what I thought it would be. As I wrote the month after it opened:For its potential to pull huge numbers of never-evers into the addictive and thrilling gravitational pull of Planet Ski, Big Snow may end up being the most important ski area on the continent. It is cheap. It is always open. It sits hard against the fourth busiest interstate in the country and is embedded into a metro population of 20 million that has outsized influence on national and global trends. Over the coming decades, this ugly oversized refrigerator may introduce millions of people to the sport.I wrote that on Jan. 13, 2020, two months before Covid would shutter the facility for 177 days. It had only been open 94 days when that happened. Then, 388 days after re-opening on Sept. 1, 2020, fire struck. It caused millions in damage and another 244-day closure. After endless negotiations with insurance companies, Big Snow American Dream finally re-opened last month. So now what? Will this place finally stabilize? What about the disastrous financial state of the mall around it, which has, according to The Wall Street Journal, missed payments on its municipal bonds? Will we see more Big Snows? Will Snow Operating bid on Jay Peak? Will we ever get a real chairlift on Vernon at Mountain Creek? With Big Snow rebooted and live (take three), it was time to focus on the future of Snow Operating. And oh man, buckle up.Questions I wish I’d askedI could have stopped Joe at any time and asked a hundred follow-up questions on any of the dozens of points he made. But there would have been no point in that. He knew what I wanted to discuss, and the narrative is compelling enough on its own, without my input. Why you should ski Mountain Creek and Big SnowBig SnowIf you’re approaching Big Snow from the point of view of a seasoned skier, I want to stop you right there: this is not indoor Aspen. And it’s not pretending to be. Big Snow is skiing’s version of Six Flags. It’s an amusement park. All are welcome, all can participate. It’s affordable. It’s orderly. It’s easy. And it has the potential to become the greatest generator of new skiers since the invention of snow. And that will especially be true if this thing scales in the way that Hession believes it will. Imagine this: you live in Houston. No one in your family skis and so you’ve never thought about skiing. You’ve never even seen snow. You can’t imagine why anyone would ever want to. It looks cold, uncomfortable, exotic as moonrocks, and about as accessible. You’re not a skier and you probably never will be.But, what if Big Snow sprouts out of the ground like a snowy rollercoaster? It’s close. It’s cheap. It could be fun. You and your buddies decide to check it out. Or you take someone there on a date. Or you take your kids there as a distraction. Your lift ticket is well under $100 and includes skis and boots and poles and bindings and a jacket and snowpants (but not, for some reason, gloves), and access to instructors in the Terrain Based Learning area, a series of humps and squiggly snow features that move rookies with the ground beneath them. You enter as a novice and you leave as a skier. You go back. Five or six more times. Then you’re Googling “best skiing USA” and buying an Epic Pass and booking flights for Denver. And if that’s not you, how about this scenario that I face all the time: nonskiers tell me they want to try skiing. Can I take them? Given my background, this would not seem like an irrational request. But I’m not sure where to start. With lift tickets, rentals, and lessons, they’re looking at $150 to $200, plus a long car ride in either direction, just to try something that is cold and frustrating and unpredictable. I’m sure as hell not teaching them. My imagination proves unequal to the request. We don’t go skiing.Big Snow changes that calculus. Solves it. Instantly. Even, as Joe suggests in our interview, in places where you wouldn’t expect it. Denver or Salt Lake City or Minneapolis or Boston. Places that already have plenty of skiing nearby. Why? Well, if you’re in Denver, a snowdome means you don’t have to deal with I-70 or $199 lift tickets or figuring out which of the 100 chairlifts in Summit County would best suite your first ski adventure. You just go to the snowdome. The potential multiplying effect on new skiers is even more substantial when you consider the fact that these things never close. Hession points out that, after decades of refinement and tweaking, Mountain Creek is now finally able to consistently offer 100-day seasons. And given the local weather patterns, that’s actually amazing. But Big Snow – in New Jersey or elsewhere – will be open 365 days per year. That’s three and a half seasons of Mountain Creek, every single year. Multiply that by 10 or 20 or 30 Big Snows, and suddenly the U.S. has far more skiers than anyone ever could have imagined.Mountain CreekThere exists in the Northeast a coterie of unimaginative blockheads who seem to measure their self-worth mostly by the mountains that they dislike. Hunter is a big target. So is Mount Snow. But perhaps no one takes more ridicule, however, than Mountain Creek, that swarming Jersey bump with the shaky financial history and almost total lack of natural snow. Everyone remembers Vernon Valley Great Gorge (as Mountain Creek was once known), and its adjacent summertime operation, the raucous and profoundly dysfunctional Action Park. Or they remember Intrawest leaving Creek at the altar. Or that one time they arrived at Creek at noon on Dec. 29 and couldn’t find a place to park and spent half the afternoon waiting in line to buy a bowl of tomato soup. Or whatever. Now, based on those long-ago notions, they toss insults about Creek in between their Facebook posts from the Jackson Hole tram line or downing vodka shots with their crew, who are called the Drinksmore Boyz or Powder Dogzz or the Legalizerz or some orther poorly spelled compound absurdity anchored in a profound misunderstanding of how impressed society is in general with the antics of men in their 20s. Whatever. I am an unapologetic Mountain Creek fan. I’ve written why many times, but here’s a summary:First, it is close. From my Brooklyn apartment, I can be booting up in an hour and 15 minutes on a weekend morning. It is a bargain. My no-blackout pass for the 2019-20 season was $230. It is deceptively large, stretching two miles from Vernon to Bear Peaks along New Jersey state highway 94. Its just over thousand-foot vertical drop means the runs feel substantial. It has night skiing, making it possible to start my day at my Midtown Manhattan desk job and finish it hooking forty-mile-an-hour turns down a frozen mountainside. The place is quite beautiful. Really. A panorama of rolling hills and farmland stretches northwest off the summit. The snowmaking system is excellent. They opened on November 16 this year and closed on April 7 last season, a by-any-measure horrible winter with too many thaws and wave after wave of base-destroying rain. And, if you know the time and place to go, Mountain Creek can be a hell of a lot of fun, thanks to the grown-up chutes-and-ladders terrain of South Peak, an endless tiered sequence of launchpads, rollers and rails (OK, I don’t ski rails), that will send you caroming down the mountain like an amped-up teenager (I am more than twice as old as any teenager).I don’t have a whole lot to add to that. It’s my home mountain. After spending my first seven ski seasons tooling around Midwest bumps, the glory of having a thousand-footer that near to me will never fade. The place isn’t perfect, of course, and no one is trying to tell that story, including me, as you can see in the full write-up below, but when I only have two or three hours to ski, Creek is an amazing gift that I will never take for granted:Podcast notesHere are a few articles laying out bits of Hession’s history with Mountain Creek:New VP has worked at Creek since his teens – Advertiser-News South, Feb. 22, 2012Mountain Creek Enters Ski Season With New Majority Owner Snow Operating – Northjersey.com, Nov. 23, 2018I’ve written quite a bit about Big Snow and Mountain Creek over the years. Here are a couple of the feature stories:The Curse of Big Snow – Sept. 30, 2021The Most Important Ski Area in America – Jan. 13, 2020This is the fourth podcast I’ve hosted that was at least in part focused on Mountain Creek:Big Snow and Mountain Creek Vice President of Marketing & Sales Hugh Reynolds – March 3, 2020Hermitage Club General Manager Bill Benneyan, who was also a former president, COO, and general manager of Mountain Creek – Dec. 4, 2020Crystal Mountain, Washington President and CEO Frank DeBerry, who was also a former president, COO, and general manager of Mountain Creek – Oct. 22, 2021Here are podcasts I’ve recorded with other industry folks that Hession mentions during our interview:Vail Resorts Rocky Mountain Region Chief Operating Officer and Mountain Division Executive Vice President Bill Rock – June 14, 2022Mountain High and Dodge Ridge President and CEO Karl Kapuscinski - June 10, 2022Alpine-X CEO John Emery – Aug. 4, 2021Fairbank Group Chairman Brian Fairbank – Oct. 16, 2020Killington and Pico President and General Manager Mike Solimano – Oct. 13, 2019Here’s the trailer for HBO’s Class Action Park, the 2020 documentary profiling the old water park on the Mountain Creek (then Vernon Valley-Great Gorge) grounds:Hession mentioned a retired chairlift and retired trails that he’d like to bring back to Mountain Creek:What Hession referred to as “the Galactic Chair” is Lift 9 on the trailmap below, which is from 1989. This would load at the junction of present-day Upper Horizon and Red Fox, and terminate on the landing where the Sojourn Double and Granite Peak Quad currently come together (see current trailmap above). This would give novice skiers a route to lap gentle Osprey and Red Fox, rather than forcing them all onto Lower Horizon all the way back to the Cabriolet. I don’t need to tell any regular Creek skiers how significant this could be in taking pressure off the lower mountain at Vernon/North. Lower Horizon is fairly steep and narrow for a green run, and this could be a compelling alternative, especially if these skiers then had the option of downloading the Cabriolet.Hession also talked about bringing back a pair of intermediate runs. One is Granite View, which is trails 34 (Cop Out), 35 (Fritz’s Folly) and 33 (Rim Run) on Granite Peak below. The trail closed around 2005 or ’06, and bringing it back would restore a welcome alternative for lapping Granite Peak. The second trail that Hession referenced was Route 80 (trail 24 on the Vernon side, running beneath lift 8), which cuts through what is now condos and has been closed for decades. I didn’t even realize it was still there. Talks with the condo association have yielded progress, Hession tells me, and we could see the trail return, providing another connection between Granite and Vernon.Creek skiers are also still obsessed with Pipeline, the double-black visible looker’s right of the Granite lift on this 2015 trailmap:I did not ask Hession about this run because I’d asked Hugh Reynolds about it on the podcast two years ago, and he made it clear that Pipeline was retired and would be as long as he and Hession ran the place. Here are links to a few more items we mentioned in the podcast:The 2019 Vermont Digger article that lists Snow Operating as an interested party in the Jay Peak sale.We talked a bit about the M.A.X. Pass, a short-lived multi-mountain pass that immediately preceded (and was dissolved by), the Ikon Pass. Here’s a list of partner resorts on that pass. Skiers received five days at each, and could add the pass onto a season pass at any partner ski area. This was missing heavies like Jackson Hole, Aspen, and Taos, but it did include some ballers like Big Sky and Killington. Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, which includes Fernie and Kicking Horse and is now aligned with the Epic Pass, was a member, as were a few ski areas that have since eschewed any megapass membership: Whiteface, Gore, Belleayre, Wachusett, Alyeska, Mountain High, Lee Canyon, and Whitewater. Odd as that seems, I’m sure we’ll look back at some of today’s megapass coalitions with shock and longing. This podcast hit paid subscribers’ inboxes on June 19. Free subscribers got it on June 22. As the philospher Goethe wrote: “No man is more hopelessly enslaved than he who WRONGLY BELIEVES that he is free.”When your mind allows you to accept and understand that the United States, Great Brittan and the Vatican are Corporations which are nothing but fictional entities which have been placed in your mind, you will understand our slavery remains primarily because we believe in false fictions. The Illusion is MUCH larger than the irrefutable 30 points above, and the 30 points above are not even the tip of the tip of the iceberg. But it is, at least a starting point. Dedication of JesusLuke 2:21-38 December 2 2018I. Introduction:A. This Christmas season we want to look at the story of Jesus’ birth in light of one ofthe key people in this story, in fact outside of Jesus this person played the biggestrole in the Christmas Story that is His mother Mary.1. We are going to see how Mary was a woman of faith, praise and depth evenat a very young age.2. Then we will come back on Christmas Eve and take a quick look at how thisstory of Mary fits into the larger story of what God was doing as Hisfingerprints and His purposes are all over these stories.B. We are going to do this by looking at the account of the story of Jesus’ birth in thebook of Luke. He wrote this book so an official named Theophilus and we, as well, could know the exact truth of what happened with Jesus as he wrote an orderlyaccount of the events of Jesus life.C. This morning, since it is child dedication Sunday, we are going to be looking at thededication of Jesus about 40 days after His birth.1. While it is chronologically out of order in Jesus’ story, it does fit thematicallywith our dedications this morning. We are actually beginning with the endof the birth account rather than the beginning.a) There is an advantage to that because the conclusion of the story reallyhelps us understand a bit more of why Jesus was born, which had beenbecomes a bit clearer with every story.2. So as we come to this story this morning remember that already a few thingshave happened – the angel appeared to Mary to announce to her that shewould be the mother of Jesus, Mary responded with a strong statement ofpraise that revealed her heart and God’s purposes for all that fear Him andfinally the actual birth of Jesus and what Mary had heard from the shepherdswho had a visit from an angel announcing the birth of Jesus to them.• So here is the story onII. Dedication Day for JesusA. Setting –1. It was forty days after the birth of Jesus. Mary and Joseph went fromBethlehem to Jerusalem, about six miles, to the temple to do two things thatthe Mosaic Law had required – dedicate Jesus to God and also to offer thesacrifices for the purification of Mary that was required of mothers who gavebirth.2. The same day that Joseph and Mary were heading to the temple so was a manfrom Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. As the story continues, we will seethat it was no coincidence that they both showed up on the same day, at thesame time. But rather a divine appointment from God.a) Turn to Luke 2 and read v25-27b) There are four things we learn about Simeon here(1) Righteous and devout man(2) Looking for the consolation of Israel – consolation means comfort, that time when Israel would be comforted, especially by theMessiah, the Christ. Listen to these OT passages (Is 49:13; 51:3;52:9; 66:13)(3) He was anointed by the Holy Spirit(4) God had revealed to him that he would not die until he saw theMessiahB. Listen to what happened next as Simeon takes Jesus in his arms and blesses God!1. Read v28-322. He basically says – God I can die now because I have seen the Messiah, theone who will be Savior of all peoples – Jew and GentilesC. Listen to the response of Joseph and Mary. Read v331. Were amazed – they marveled and wondered at what they just heard2. Not only about what Simeon said but I also believe everything they haveheard over the last ten months from the angels, shepherds and now fromSimeon. Read the second half of v33D. Then Simeon directly addressed Mary, listen – read v34-351. He told her that Jesus had a special assignment from God that would result inthe rising and falling of many in Israel – the rising to salvation of those whoaccept Him as Messiah and the downfall of those who reject Him2. Also, that she herself will bear deep pain in her soul because of Jesus.3. Maybe a little more information than the typical mom wants to hear at theirchild’s dedication but of course, Jesus was not the typical child with a typicalcalling on His life.E. It appears that at the very moment that God sent another affirmation for Mary andJoseph regarding everything they had been hearing.1. Listen read v36-382. Anna gave thanks to God and began to speak about this baby Jesus to all ofthose who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem!• So what does this story mean for you and me? I think there areIII. Two Main TakeawaysA. The first has to do with the whole meaning of Christmas, or even more so theultimate purpose for Jesus coming to earth!1. We see in this story that Jesus is the Messiah and as the Messiah He hascome to bring comfort to Israel and salvation to the entire world, both theJews and the Gentiles!2. Jesus’ presence, the Messiah they have been waiting for, was not going to bean easy ride either for Israel or for Mary as His mother. Many in Israel weregoing to fall because of Him and Mary was going to experience deep painherself.3. Bottom line we learn from this that the story of Jesus coming to earth wasabout redemption, redemption for all mankind, both Jew and Gentile and theredemption of the city Jerusalem – its waste places, wilderness and desert.B. The second takeaway has to do with you and me! Simply we should all have thesame attitude of Simeon.1. First, he spent his life looking forward to the comfort of Israel and Godblessed him by allowing to see the one who was going to do that – theMessiah, the Christ – Jesus Christa) But what he did not see was the actual fulfilment of that time of comfortas that is yet to come both in the kingdom here on earth for 1000 yearsand in eternity!b) But the attitude of looking forward to the return of the Messiah Jesus tofulfill this consolation is something that God is seeking to work in eachone of us by His grace. Read Titus 2:11-132. Secondly, the response that naturally flowed out of Simeon was blessing Godand from Anna it was to thank God. That is what we are going to do now aswe start this Christmas Season.

Redefined: MVCMatt 28:18-20 November 18, 2018I. Introduction:A. When it comes to preaching you could say that today’s message is the end of theseries on discipleship and it’s time to move onto something else.1. But I do not see today’s message as the conclusion to the series but rather asthe launching pad to a discipleship movement at MVC.2. My prayer, my hope, my dream is that discipleship will become part of theDNA at MVC, it will become part of the environment of MVC, it willbecome part of the culture of MVC over the next five years.B. I want to launch us today by reviewing what we have learned so far and then talkabout next steps from here in order to start building discipleship into the DNA ofMVC.• Let’s start with our …II. ReviewA. My hope of this review on one hand is so that we can better crystalize in ourminds the things we have learned together about discipleship, but even more so tostir up our hearts in being disciples.B. We called this series Redefined! The reason for that is that we wanted to stripaway all the current day thinking in North America about what a disciple is andgo back to the Bible to allow the Word of God to once again define what adisciple is. – Thus redefined!C. So we learned in our introductory message two foundational things!1. First the mission that Jesus gave to the church was to make disciples and wedo that by going, baptizing and teachinga) Turn and read Mt 28:18-20b) Going to the lost with the gospel message, baptizing those who respondto the message of Jesus’ salvation by faith, then finally spending the restof our lives teaching and learning what it means to live by the word ofGod2. We also learned in that message that disciples are not a subclass ofChristians, superstar or all-star Christians, but rather that the word disciple issynonymous with being a believer in Jesus Christ.a) So the real question as a believer is not am I a disciple or not but ratheram I living like a disciple or not because that is who I really am.D. So in light of the first week our next job was to redefine a disciple. That week wealso learned two major lessons.1. First, the word disciple means learner or pupil.a) In addition, we learned that when a pupil or disciple is fully trained hewill be like his teacher. Read Lk 6:40b) Since we are disciples of Jesus the end goal of our growth is becomingmore like Jesus. – Thus the mission of MVC includes becoming likeJesus!2. The second thing we learned that morning was from the call of Jesus to thedisciples in Matt 4:19-20 Reada) We ended up that day by saying the definition of a disciple summarizedin four words is, Following Jesus, impacting others!E. Then we spent a week looking at the third way of making a disciple – this isteaching1. Read v20a2. We learned that week that being a disciple is not just studying the Bible moreand learning more truth but actually, while it does require studying the Bible, the end goal is not knowledge but obedience. Living our lives under thedirection of God’s word3. Thus we have adapted in many different places here the importance of thelanguage “next step of obedience” and we have even created a ”next stepstable” where you could discuss this personally with someone.F. Then we redefined growing as a disciple1. We learned the valuable lesson that each one of us is at different places in ourjourney with Jesus thus each one of us needs something different for us tocontinue to grow as a disciple.2. We learned one size does not fit all when it comes to Christian growth andthat some people need to get to keep growing and some people need to giveto keep growing3. This Power Point summarized that morning.G. Then we learned there is a cost to impacting others for Jesus.1. We learned in 2 Timothy 2 about the self-imposed suffering or hardship inorder to impact others.2. We learned that we are called to be like aa) Soldier that sets aside his own agenda to carry out the agenda andmission of our commanding officer Jesus.b) Athlete who must follow the rules in order to win the prize – we must setaside our ideas and ways and follow the way God says to do itc) And like the farmer we must work hardH. Then we redefine the method of discipleship.1. We learned in this message that we must not only buy into the mission ofdiscipleship and the message of discipleship – which is the Bible, but alsointo the method of discipleship which is not just adding disciples butmultiplying disciples – making disciples who make disciples.2. We saw that Paul bought into Jesus’ method of making disciples, which wasto go deeply with a few and give priority time to those who would learn togive it away to others!I. Then we looked at obstacles that keep us back from following Jesus andimpacting others. We saw two primary ones1. First, living for today rather than eternity. We are so caught up in theproblems and opportunities of this world, the two-second life, that we give nothought to the part of our lives that will last forever – the big one!2. The second obstacle is that people are in the driver’s seat of their own carrather than letting Jesus take control and ownership of their lives.J. Then we looked at the problem of inadequacy, that feeling that everyone of us hasthat we are just not enough to be the disciple Jesus wants us to be and we do nothave enough to impact others.1. Read Matt 28:20b2. We learned that Jesus being with us is not just a matter of Him being in thesame room but also Him working along with us in what we are doing. Heputs his fingerprints all over our lives and work for him.K. Then we learned from Pastor Mike Locke the importance of God’s word in thisjourney of discipleship1. We learned that God’s word it reliable and can be trusted2. We learned the value of God’s word in that it leads our lives!3. Jesus said in John 8:31L. Mike also taught us as a disciple why we should follow Jesus! – Simply becauseour call as disciples is higher than we can achieve but Jesus has reached down inlove to be what we need to live for Him!• That is the heart of what we learned in this series. Now what areIII. The next steps in making discipleship part of the DNA of MVCA. Let look at a simple chart.1. PP2. All four of these can in one way or another be considered discipleship but thebottom two were the most intense and most effective ways Jesus discipledpeople.3. So those are the two we are going to try to strengthen over the next five yearsat MVC.B. First, let’s talk about the twelve –1. The small group of men that Jesus selected.a) This was an important decision for Jesus because they are the ones towhom He was entrusting His life work!b) It was so important that He spent an entire night away on the mountainpraying about it. And when morning came, He called those who werefollowing Him, probably the seventy, and out of them he choose twelvethat he called apostles.c) These twelve are the people Jesus primarily invested in and took withhim everywhere teaching and modeling for them God’s way of life andministry. Simply how to follow Jesus and impact others!2. To us at MVC the twelve is our small group ministrya) This ministry has become very important to us as we seek to make smallgroups part of the DNA of MVC that we have refocused part of TamiReyna’s responsibilities to include being our director of small groups sowe can give more intentionality and time to this important discipleshipstructure.b) Small groups are the perfect place to grow with others as disciples ofJesus Christ as we deeply connect with God and with one anotherthrough our small group ministry.(1) Remember the means of discipleship is really all about peoplerubbing off on people.(2) And continuing in God’s Word(3) And seeking our next step of obedience and helping each otherreach our next step of obedience as we grow as disciples(4) So we need to be committed to some people to do this.c) In addition, a proper view of small groups is not adding another thing toour already busy schedules but rather putting something in busyschedules where I can regain my bearings in Christ with other disciplesin the midst of our busy schedules!d) Here are some details about small groups at MVC(1) We are hoping for group sizes of around 10-12 people(2) We are going to have two small group sessions a year, one in falland one in winter and spring where you will meet every otherweek. We will be taking the summers off.(3) So by signing up you are not signing up for a lifetime but rather atleast one semester but hopefully two to find out if that group is agood fit for you or not.(4) A new element to our groups as well will be that the staff will beproviding materials for the groups to go through that will be basedon the current series – thus allowing a greater oneness within thechurch as we are all wrestling through, talking about, and prayingabout the same things at the same time.e) For many here today I would guess that this is probably your next step ofobedience to put yourself in a place where you can continue to grow as adisciple!(1) We are very excited to be kicking off some new small groups atthe beginning of the year!(2) You can sign up for a small group starting today after the servicefor the next 3 weeks, or sign up on line or by calling the office.B. Next, let’s talk about the three.1. The three were the ones that Jesus spent most of His time with.a) Peter, James, and John were at everything else the seventy and twelvewere at, but these three had experiences and had discussions with Jesusthat no one else did.b) In addition, these three became key leaders in the early church as we sawin the book of Acts.2. Here at MVC our desire is to begin a Spirit led movement which is moreabout mystery than management when it comes to investing deeply in a fewat a time.a) The key strategy of this movement is buying into the method that Jesusused of it multiplication – giving priority to investing deeply in a fewwho have the desire to give away to others!b) I think you will remember from our sermon this is not just an exclusivegroup of a few but also ultimately our attempt to touch many in a deepway to be followers of Jesus who are impacting others.3. We are going to be jump starting this in January as well as we have a coreteam of six men and women who said they want to see this movement happenat MVC.a) This fall these six will be contacting individuals they sense God isleading them to, to be part of a small group for six months where theywill be receiving a greater vision for discipleship the way Jesus did.b) If you say, “Hey I really have a heart the beats for that and want to be apart of this movement” please go to the next steps table and let themknow your desire for this and give them your contact info and someonewill reach out and talk to you about this.C. Finally, discipleship being part of MVC’s DNA means that discipleship hasbecome a mindset of the people of MVC that naturally fills their hearts is part oftheir natural conversations and their normal way of life. I actually saw glimpsesof this as I was in normal conversations with two different women during thisseries.1. One told me that she wants to walk better with Jesus and there was a womanwhom she admires for her passion for the Lord and said that she is going toask her to mentor her.2. Another woman who is walking well with the Lord and she told me she ispraying regarding who she can invest her life in!D. May God that multiply 500 fold here at MVC and if He does in five years we willneed three services to hold all the people who are following Jesus and impactingothers!
Redefined: Cost2 Timothy 2:3-7 October 7, 2018I. Introduction:A. In Luke 14 Jesus says to count the cost of following Him.1. He says as a disciple, a follower of Jesus, Jesus has priority in our lives overour most intimate relationships with mates, children, parents and siblings, over our own self and desires, and even over our possessions!2. Jesus is saying if any of these relationships, our possessions or even our owndesires come in conflict with what Jesus wants, a disciple always chosesJesus.3. Yes, eternal life, salvation the abundant life comes to us with the warninglabel that there is a cost to following Jesus, pain, suffering and sacrifice arepart of the package!B. We learned this in Philippians 3:10 after Paul spoke about being saved by therighteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith in Jesus, he then spokeof the purpose of that salvation1. Phil 3:102. Salvation is a complete package of knowing Jesus and His power as well asthe pain of suffering and the laying down of my life for him and others!C. I have to admit when I consider the cost I have paid in following Jesus, the smalllittle sufferings of being mocked or people discontinuing their relationship withme because of following Jesus, it makes me feel like I have been at a constantchurch picnic in comparison to others throughout history and the world who haveexperienced extreme suffering, persecutions, imprisonments and even dying forJesus.• Today I want to talk about a different kind of cost in following Jesus, a self-imposedsuffering of hardship in order to do the work of a disciple! Turn in your Bibles toII. 2 Timothy 2 (overview of 1-7)A. Context – Paul was in a Roman prison when he wrote this letter to encourageTimothy join with him in suffering for the gospel and to remain faithful to hisministry in the face of hardships.1. Here in chapter 2 Paul was commanding Timothy to pass on to others themessage that he taught to him. We will talk more about this next week.2. But right after this command, he calls Timothy to suffer hardship with him inthis ministry of making disciples who can make disciples!3. Paul uses three common illustrations from their world to emphasize how theycan suffer hardship in making disciples. Illustrations are that of soldiers, athletes and farmers.B. Watch for this as I read but also note that all of this suffering does not come fromothers from the outside but is all self-imposed suffering for the sake of makingdisciples! Read 2:1-7• Let’s take a closer look at the...III. Three ways to suffer in making disciplesA. First, we learn from the soldier that we are to give our focus and energy to theservice of the Lord. Watch for this as I read v4.1. Simply he is saying that a good soldier does not get himself all entangled, allknotted up, ensnared by his personal concerns, pleasures, positions andpossessions.2. Instead a solider is single-minded on his purpose, rigorously disciplined, andobedient to the mission that his commanding officer gives him.3. This will require a personal, intentional and sacrificial choice to make the callto make disciples the priority of your life!4. He is a person who does not just add to his life in light of the call to be adisciple but he actually prunes some of these personal pleasures out in orderto fulfill the call of Jesus on His life!B. Second, we learn from the athlete that a good solider follows God’s rules forGod’s work as revealed in God’s blueprints, the Bible. Watch for this as I readv5.1. Every athletic event has its own boundaries, rules and score keeping!2. While the solider talked about personal sacrifices the athlete talks aboutsubmission to rules of the one who set up the event!3. God has given us the guidelines in this book how to make disciples, who tomake disciples of, what to teach them, how a disciple maker lives and thequalities of their life!4. Simply I believe he is saying here that it will take submission to God’s Wordon how to follow Jesus and impact others! God is not interested in my bestideas or best practices apart from His word.5. As a disciple maker, we know the book and we live by the book. Hesacrifices his own will and ideas to carry out the will and word of God, evenif it will be harder, more painful or uncomfortable to do it that way!C. Third, we learn from the farmer that a disciple maker works hard at his task.Watch for this as I read v61. Rather than being lazy, idle, giving little effort or constantly putting thingsoff Paul calls Timothy to suffer hardship by working hard.2. A hard working farmer normally has two aspects to what he does – he uses alot of time and a lot of energy/effort to do his work.3. Yes, to make disciples is going to cost us time and energy and will require usto make time in our schedules to do it. It is not just a matter of fitting it in ifI have time, but rather making the time necessary or taking even extra time ifneeded to make disciples.D. But true to God’s grace, He rewards those who do so!1. The soldier pleases the one who enlisted him and gave him his mission. Readv42. The athlete wins the prize Read v53. The farmer gets to be the first one to enjoy the fruits of his work! Read v6• If we truly want to be a disciple making church we need to be willing to sufferhardship, self-imposed suffering of our own agendas like a solider, our own ways likean athlete and even our own time and energy like a farmer! And to do this we need tolook to …IV. JesusA. Read 2 Timothy 2:1 – grace and strength from HimB. Turn to and read Hebrews 12:1-3C. As we go to communion, turn to Jesus and consider your life and sacrifices forHim as a follower of His.1. Remember Him, fix your eyes on Him, consider both His self-imposedsuffering and His suffering at the hands of sinners so that you will not growweary or lose heart!2. Time to reflect as communion is passed!
Redefined: ObstaclesPsalm 39:5-6; Romans 12:1 October 21, 2018I. Introduction:A. As I thought about a series on discipleship I asked myself what are the mainobstacles that keep a believer back from living for Jesus and His mission ofmaking disciples – people who are following Jesus, impacting others!1. I thought of busyness and thought yes! I thought of wrong priorities andthought yes! I thought of immaturity and thought yes! I thought of sin –Absolutely! And the list of specifics could go on and on2. Then I wondered are there any underlying foundational issues that tie allthese together that derail believers from living as faithful disciples who areall in on Jesus and His mission!B. I came up with two foundational obstacles!1. I am sure they are not the only two but they are two key ones that believersstruggle with when it comes to following Jesus, impacting others!• The first one has to do with this questionII. Is your life built for the big one?A. Another way to say this is this, “Are you building your life around this life hereon earth or your eternal life in the future?”1. Picture from paper2. Story of picture in New York TimesB. Our perspective on our own lives – how long they last and in what to invest.Think with me for a minute1. According to the Bible, how long does the average person live? - Psalm90:10 says seventy years or eighty if we have strength.2. According to the Bible, how long does the average Christian live? – John3:16 forever!3. The reality is that our lives are made up of two parts – the one here on earthin this body and the one that will be in eternity in a brand new body. Samelife in two different bodies in two different places!C. Have you ever given any thought what your life here on earth looks like incomparison to eternal life? I think Psalm 39 gives us a window into that! Turn1. In this Psalm, the Psalmist asked the Eternal God to give him someperspective on how long his life will last. Let me know just how transient, temporary, how short my life really is!2. Read v4-5 “nothing in your sight” “at his best”3. Read Ps 144:44. Let me try to expand on this idea that our life at its best is like a mere breatha) Take a breath and note how long it was.(1) Average breath last about two seconds.b) Average breaths per minute about 16; 23,040 breaths a day; 8,409,000per year; live to be 80 years old – 672,768,000 in a lifetime.c) So now let’s get some perspective –(1) How long does a breath, two seconds ‘at best’, seem, incomparison to your entire lifetime?(2) How long does your life here on earth seem in comparison to theone you will live in eternity?d) As he said in the phrase right before – In the eyes of an eternal God ourlife is like nothing!D. So I need to ask you, which life is the big one? In addition, are you living yourlife for the two-second life, or are you living your life for the big one–eternity?1. Which life are you thinking about and basing your life off when you aremaking plans, decisions, and living out the two-second life?E. Do you recognize that while the two-second life is not very long in light of thebig one it is extremely important in determining what our eternity will look like?1. First, not only do Christians live forever but also so do Non-Christians. – sothe location and environment of our forever life is based upon a decision wemake in the two-second life regarding Jesusa) If I acknowledge my sin that separates me from God, and rely upon Jesusand what He did for me at the cross for my sin as my only hope to beright with God then I will live forever with Him in a real place calledheavenb) If I do not acknowledge my sin that separates me from God, and do notrely upon Jesus and what He did for me at the cross for my sin as myonly hope to be right with God then I will live forever apart from Him ina real place called hell!2. Let me speak to believers now - do you know as believers that you will beheld accountable for and rewarded for your life and service to Jesus here onearth, as we will stand before Him in judgment.a) 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 teaches us our works will be tested by fireb) How would you like to see your entire life efforts go up in smoke right infront of your eyes as you stand in front of Jesus?3. Matthew 6 tells us that when we use our money for the glory of God we areactually storing up riches for ourselves in heaven. Either you can be storingup all your riches for the two-seconds or for eternity!4. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 tells us that our temporary light affliction that wesuffer here on earth for Jesus sake is producing for us an eternal weight ofglory far beyond all comparison.5. Luke 19 teaches us the way we overseer the things that God has put in ourhands will have an impact upon the degree of our reign with Him in thefuture kingdom6. Paul teaches repeatedly about receiving crowns in eternity for the faithfulservice to Jesus here on this earth in the two-second life7. Even 1 Corinthians 4:5 says that in our service for Jesus we should not lookfor praise from man but the praise that comes from God at the return forJesus.F. I think you get the point, so many Christians are living their lives as if the twoseconds is all there is without taking any thought to the long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, big onethey have yet to live.1. So many believers spend their lives here on earth seeking the experiences theworld can provide, the pleasures these two seconds can provide, thepossessions these two seconds can provide, the positions these two secondscan provide.2. All these things are going to pass away!G. So, I believe that the first main obstacle that keeps a believer back from living forJesus and His mission is that we are not living with an eternal perspective – weare living for and investing in the two seconds rather than using the two secondsto prepare for the big one!• While the first obstacle had to do with perspective the second has to do with …III. Who is the boss in your life?A. Simply, who is in charge in your life, whom are you taking your direction from, who is the boss in your life? The world, you or Jesus?1. I know we all know the right Biblical answer to this but this morning I wantyou to take an honest look at your heart and life and say, is Jesus calling theshots in my life, is Jesus calling the shots in every area, is Jesus calling theshots in the decision of my life or am I calling the shots ?B. Turn to Romans 12:1-2. After speaking of the great salvation we have receivedthis is what he says about the response of believers to this. ReadC. Note a few things about this passage1. The presentation of our bodies to God, which represents our entire lives, isthe appropriate response to God’s mercies to us. V12. Connected with that is the daily renewing of our minds by God’s word so wewill be changed at the core of our being v2a-b3. Finally, both of these are done in order to carry out the very good, acceptableand perfect will of God for our lives! V2cD. Simply we live our lives for God’s will! We do this by:1. Presenting our entire life to Him to be lived for His will2. We regularly take in life transforming doses of God’s word so we know whatGod’s will is!E. So each one of us needs to come to that place in our lives where we make thecrisis decision as to who are we living for, who will be in charge in my life, Jesusor myself?1. If we are the boss of our own lives and call our own shots then we have littleconcern for following Jesus or impacting others, maybe a little guilt but notone of the driving desires of my life!2. If we have presented our lives to Jesus to live under his direction and controlthen following Jesus, impacting others would be one of the highest prioritiesof our lives!F. Maybe this illustration will help us see where we are1. Is Jesus is the driver’s seat of your car or is he in the front passenger seat?a) Driver calls the shots and is control of the carb) Passenger is the one who the driver turns to and asks for help withsomething when needed. He is not in control of the car.c) So are you in the driver’s seat of your car/life – calling your own shotsand controlling it or just turning to Jesus and asking him for help whenyou need it or is Jesus in the driver’s seat?2. Is Jesus is the driver’s seat or passenger’s seat or the back seat of your life?a) The back seat is where people are normally out of the conversation anddecisions of the car and sometimes are even told to be quiet back therebecause you are bothering us.b) Is Jesus in the back seat, someone you rather not hear from so you canjust keep on driving your life where you want it?IV. ConclusionA. Actually, we need to take this a step further as to who is holding the title deed toyour life/car?B. The reality is that Jesus has purchased the lives of believers with His own shedblood – my life belongs to Him! He owns my life!1. Read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20C. So how are you living your life?1. Temporal or eternal perspective? Living for the two-second life or the bigone?2. He is in charge or you are?3. You have given Him the title deed or are you holding onto it?D. Opportunity to turn over title deed of your life to Jesus and along with it the rightfor Him to do whatever He wants in your heart to make a person who wholeheartedlyfollows Jesus and impacts others!E. Time and songs of presentation/surrender
Redefined: Method2 Timothy 2:2 October 14, 2018I. Introduction:A. Recently Kim and I had a missionary couple from Ecuador spend the night withus and he asked us a very good question. “Why do you think that the gospeltraveled from Jerusalem all the way to Rome in just twenty five years consideringthe fact that when Jesus died he only had eleven faithful followers who did nothave all the advanced tools, technology and materials as well as seminars andworkshops we have today to do it? On top of that, “why do we see the churchtoday who has all these advanced tools, technology and materials, workshops andseminars making such a small impact in advancing the Gospel not only around theworld but even in our own communities?”1. I said “Great questions and I have no idea”2. He said simply because while the church has bought into Jesus’ mission tomake disciples and His message from the Bible, we have not bought intofollowing His method and means.3. As we talked, it seems that the North American church thinks that we havebetter ideas than Jesus had and more resources than Jesus did to make moredisciples quickly. It seems we are trusting in our ideas and resources ratherthan the method that Jesus used to make disciples!B. I want to share with you two quotes that have deeply impacted me as to how Jesusmade disciples, quotes regarding his method:1. “The painstaking education of the disciples secured that the Teacher’sinfluence on the world should be permanent; that His kingdom should befounded on the rock of deep and indestructible convictions in the minds ofthe few, not on the shifting sands of superficial fleeting impressions on theminds of the many! A.B. Bruce The Training of the Twelvea) So we see here that Jesus was more concerned with going deep with afew rather than drawing big crowds with superficial teaching.b) And when we see Jesus’ ministry we see that the smaller the group themore time that Jesus spent with them and I believe it was for the reasonsA.B. Bruce mentioned2. The second quote builds on this truth but adds another dynamic to Jesus’method of making disciples that is very important.a) “Jesus’ life would teach us that finding and training people to reachpeople must have priority… Better to give a year or so to one or twopeople who learn what it means to conquer for Christ than spend alifetime with a congregation just keeping the program going. Nor does itmatter how small or inauspicious the beginning may be; what counts isthat those to whom we do give priority in our life learn to give it away!Robert Coleman The Master Plan Of Evangelismb) Jesus’ method was not only going deep with a few but it also includedgoing deep with people who will reach other people, people who wouldgive it away!C. It seems to see the kind of results the early church had we must buy into not onlyJesus’ mission and message but also His method and means!1. Mission – Make disciples (Following Jesus, Impacting Others)2. Message – Bible (especially about Jesus)3. Method – Multiplying Disciples (Disciples who make disciples)4. Means – People not Programs (Life on Life not just materials)• These four key aspects of discipleship were not only what Jesus was committed to butalso Paul. Turn toII. 2 Timothy 2:2A. We saw this passage last week Paul is calling Timothy to join in with him insuffering self-imposed hardship for the work of making disciples! And to do thisit will require the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.B. As I read v1-2 watch for the four key aspects of making disciples (Mission,Message, Method, Means)C. This whole verse is about the mission – making disciples. People, who followJesus, impact others.1. But this verse has a special emphasis on impacting others and is a greatillustration of what AB Bruce said about Jesus’ method of making disciples –it takes the “painstaking education, the rock of deep and indestructibleconvictions in the minds of the few.”2. This whole verse is about that very thing. Watch as readD. The message of discipleship is here as well – the Bible, especially about Jesus1. Read v2a – things you heard from me2. Turn to 1 Timothy 1:11a) Readb) God had entrusted to Paul the glorious gospel and message about JesusChrist who He is and what He has done for us3. Turn to 2 Timothy 1a) In v10-11, we see that Paul was appointed a preacher, apostle andteacher of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. Readb) In v13 Paul tells Timothy to hang onto, retain, do not let go the standard, the bar that Paul set for the sound, healthy word of God that you learnedfrom me.(1) Illustrate with bar – do not lower the bar, no grading on the curvewhen it comes to God’s word(2) Readc) In v14 Paul tells Timothy to guard by means of the Holy Spirit thistreasure of God’s words that has been entrusted to him4. So in 2 Tim 2: 2 we see the message of discipleship – the sound words that hehad heard from Paul, the words that God had entrusted to Paul and now Paulwas entrusting to Timothy.E. Then we go on in this passage and we see Jesus’ method of discipleship –multiplying disciples. I want to show that to you in two ways in this passage1. Read v2a-c2. First, the very nature of the word entrust shows us that multiplication shouldbe going on with the message of discipleship. The word entrust has twoaspects to ita) First, it is taking something that is yours and giving it to someone else.b) Second, the person you give it to now becomes responsible for the careof what was given to them.c) So the very nature of entrusting means that the one who received thegoods now has responsibility to watch over, care for, and manage it forthe sake of the owner.(1) Like making a deposit in a bank or giving our retirement moneyover to a financial planner to care for, manage and grow it.d) And here God made a deposit into Paul, God entrusted to Paul His truthwhich now Paul was responsible to hold onto to its high and healthystandard and pass it on to others.(1) And Paul entrusted it to Timothy so now Timothy was responsibleto hold onto to its high and healthy standard and pass it on toothers(2) And Timothy entrusted it to faithful men who can teach others sonow they were responsible to hold onto to its high and healthystandard and pass it on to others3. Secondly note specifically the kind of people Timothy was to entrust thisprecious treasure of God’s word –a) Read. v2b-cb) Not only are they to be faithful but also people who can teach others.People who can pass it on to others!4. This verse teaches us that God’s word should be passed on to fourgenerations of people – Paul - Timothy - Faithful men who can teach -others!5. So Paul was committed to Jesus’ method of multiplying disciplesF. And we see in this verse that Paul also used Jesus’ means of discipleship. Hiscommitment was people up close to other people and investing in them God’struth and their lives, not programs that tried to mass-produce disciples by meansof material! Read v2 one more time• So why would this man say it is Jesus’ method that caused the gospel to spread deepand wide in the book of Acts and should todayIII. ApplicationA. The reason is as simple as math. It is all the difference between multiplicationand addition. Let me illustrate1. (Addition) If you were to establish five people this year in their walk withChrist, then there would be five more disciples/servants at the end of the year.If you picked up five new men and worked with them next year then therewould be 1ten disciples/servants after two years. Fifteen after three years.Twenty after four years. Twenty five after five years. Fifty after ten years, one hundred after twenty years and one hundred twenty five after twenty fiveyears2. (Multiplication) If you were to equip one person this year with the tools tominister to someone else, then there would be one other disciple maker at theend of the year. If you picked up one new man and worked with him nextyear and the person you equipped last year also did the same, then therewould be four disciple makers after two years. If each of the four disciplemakers took on one person and equipped them for one year, then there wouldbe eight disciple makers after three years. Sixteen after four years. Thirtyfour after five years. One thousand twenty four after ten years and onemillion thirty eight thousand three hundred thirty six after twenty years.Thirty three million five hundred fifty four thousand four hundred thirty twoafter twenty five years (the time it took the gospel to get from Jerusalem toRome)B. Now we know that in the real world there are many ways this multiplication canbreak down through not everyone being faithful in carrying it on, backsliding, health etc.1. But the point is still true. Making disciples who make disciples is much moreeffective and is Jesus’ model rather than just making disciples!2. RepeatC. So the question for each one of us who feels we are a faithful follower of Jesus is,“Are we making disciples who make disciples or at least am I being discipled bysomeone so I can learn how to make disciples who makes disciples?”1. If not, why?2. And remember that Jesus’ means is people not programs, materials, or justreading a book. Who is rubbing off on my life in a life on life relationshipand whom am I rubbing off on?D. Finally, there may be some here today who feel they have not grown to that placeyet to be able to teach others who can teach others or wondering if you are readyto disciple others.1. As we learned earlier in the series asking if I am ready to impact others is thewrong question, the right question is have I received something from Jesus?a) Have you received salvation – then you have something to pass onto tothose who do not know Jesus – your story and start learning the Gospelso you can tell them that too.b) Have you received God’s comfort or wisdom in a hard time? Pass it onc) God speaks to you about a life transforming truth – pass it on2. Turn to Matthew 10a) Read v1 – Jesus gave his disciples authority to heal and cast out demons.b) In v7 He charged them to preach the gospel messagec) Now listen to v8. Read.d) Jesus freely gave them that authority to heal and cast out demons nowHe says “Freely you received, freely give”E. Redefined: TeachingMatthew 28:19-20 // September 23, 2018I. Introduction:A. Someone coined a saying a number of years ago that still holds true today formuch of the North American Church: “The great omission of the GreatCommission is obedience!”1. The great oversight of the Great Commission, the great exclusion from theGreat Commission that Jesus gave us, that which is neglected the most in theGreat Commission is obedience!• Turn in your Bibles toII. Matt 28:18A. Review the structure of this passage1. One main verb which is a command – make disciples2. Three participles that tell us how to do it – go, baptizing, teachingB. ReadC. Note at the start of v20 is the third of these ways by which we make disciples –teaching them.1. This is the instruction to those who have already become disciples orbelievers in Jesus Christ2. An ongoing process that will really last the rest of our lives of teaching andlearning depending which end of the discipleship process you are on.D. Now what is omitted so often is what we are to teach them.1. As I read commentaries on this verse I was amazed at how many of thememphasized the importance of teaching to fulfil the Great Commission andhow the church needs to be built around teaching.2. But the passage says more than that.a) Read 20a-b.b) Teaching them to observe, obey, keep, and act upon what they aretaught.3. Read one more time and watch for what we are to teach them to obey.a) Read leaving out “all that” and instead put in “what.” Is that what itsays?b) Now read it as the text isc) We are to teach them to obey, observe, keep, and act upon all that Jesuscommanded us.(1) Everything, not just the select few things that seem to be practicalto my life today!(2) He speaks to our beliefs, our thought lives, our values, our morals, our affections, our attitudes, our decisions, our words, our hurts, our habits, our money, our time, our attention, our sexuality, etc.E. Remember we learned last week that the very definition of the word discipledemands obedience1. Vines Dictionary said - “a disciple was not only a pupil, but an adherent, someone who binds themselves to observing or obeying what they learn!2. That means learning from Jesus and obeying His teachings about how to livelifeF. The great omission of the Great Commission is obedience1. Not just teaching them2. Not just teaching them to obey Jesus’ teachings3. But teaching them to obey all of Jesus’ teachings/commandsG. Now let me do a quick side bar here so no one is confused at this point. I am notdown talking or minimalizing the importance of teaching and studying God’sword.1. There are many passages in this book that tell us the benefits and life changesthat come to us when we read, study, memorize and meditate on this book.a) But disciples take it one-step further and apply it to their lives!2. And let me add this also – before you can obey what Jesus taught you have toread and study what He taught us!a) And it is not just the red letter words of Jesus but He also said in John 16that He had many more things to say to them, but they could not bearthem at that time, so He promised them that the Holy Spirit would comeguide them into all truthb) That was a promise for the inspiration of the entire New Testament thatcompletes the teachings of Jesus for us.c) And by the way the New Testament teaches us of the value of the OldTestament in our current days as followers of Jesus3. So to be able to obey Jesus it is important for us to spend time in this book, sowe can rightly divide just what God, Jesus, is saying to us and what He isexpecting of us and what we need to obey to be a properly functioningdisciple.• So as a disciple the key question we need to constantly be asking ourselves as westudy God’s word and need to be asking one another as we seek to grow as disciplesis:III. What is my next step of obedience?A. This is probably the most important question we need to constantly wrestle with ifwe want to be growing disciples. “What is my next step of obedience?”B. As I prayed about this sermon, I was wondering after teaching the truth how Iwould exhort MVC regarding this truth. There are many ways I could go with“obedience to God’s word” so I was not sure.1. What I did was start to consider how MVC is doing regarding obedience. What do we need right now regarding this passage?2. I realized that so many of us are at different places in our walk of obedienceto all of God’s word, so many of us need something different to keep usexcelling in our obedience to Christ.a) Some are doing well – no one is perfect in their obedience but some aredoing pretty good in ordering their life according to God’s wordb) Some want to obey Him in everything but they are caught by somestronghold of sin or the devil that has them enslaved to itc) Some are fearful to obey God because they are not sure what He woulddo if they really gave Him control of their money, relationships, habits orhurtsd) Some lack in faith to obey Him because they tried that before and it didnot turn out the way they hoped it would.e) Some struggle with obeying God because they are angry with Godfeeling like He let them down in the past by not giving them what theyhad hoped for.f) Some never have realized just how important it is to obey God; theythought they were doing well just by being saved and going to church afew times a month.g) Some even see obedience as legalism, rather than knowing it is a lovingresponse to God and the path to the best possible life we can have.C. The list can go on but one common theme came to me as I was considering thedifferent places we are at. That is no matter where you are at “obedience isachievable for you.” You do not have to be stuck or have to be plateaued, butrather your next step of obedience is possible because of Jesus and His grace!1. Yes, I did say because of His grace – grace is not the freedom to do whateveryou want because you are no longer under the law but rather grace is thepower to do what Jesus wants you to do!2. I do not know where you are stuck or plateaued, but even in the GreatCommission itself, Jesus promised His presence with you to carry outeverything He asks of us. Read v20bD. Obedience is possible not because you can do this if you try hard enough butrather because of what Jesus has done for you and is doing in you.1. Ezekiel 36:26a) This is the New Covenant that Jesus ratified with His blood when Hedied at the crossb) He not only promised to forgive sins and He not only promised toremove that old stubborn self-willed heart and put in a brand new heart, one that is tender, responsive and God-willed heartc) Then He says this: Read Ezek 36:27(1) It is now possible to obey God because His Spirit lives inside of usto cause us to walk in His ways(2) And the Spirit within us creates within in us a carefulness, acautiousness, an attentiveness to observe, and obey God’s words.2. Phil 2:13 – speaking in the context of obedience listen to what God says:a) Read v13b) God is at work inside of you and me as believers to do two thingsregarding obedience:(1) First, giving us the desire to obey Him and the will to obey Him(2) Second, God is working in us by His spirit to give us the ability toobey Him3. Hebrews 13:21a) Listen to this great promise. I call it the New Testament anointing.Anointing is simply God equipping His servants to do his will.b) Read4. Your next step of obedience is possible because of Jesus’ work for you at thecross and in His resurrection and Jesus’ work in you now by means of HisSpirit!5. So whatever your next step of obedience is, Jesus is your need.a) Whether that is for Him to show you what He wants from you becauseyou really do not know or to remove some obstacle in your life that isholding you back from obeying Him, or even the desire to want to dowhat God wants you to do rather than what you want to do, or theenablement to do what you could never do apart from HimSo in closing we want to remove the Great Omission of the Great Commission in ourlives and at MVC. We do not just want to be black belts in studying and understandingGod’s word but we also want to be black belts in obeying, applying, doing, keeping, andacting upon God’s Word6. So what is your next step of obedience?7. Turn to Jesus to know what that is! Turn to Jesus to remove any obstaclesthat would be holding you back, turn to Jesus to enable you to carry it out!8. Trust and obey for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust andobey!IV. Give two minutes of silence to consider before the Lord!

Episode 18 February 7, 2018I've finally started doing some real research on how to feed your dog a raw diet (properly) and today I am sharing what I have learned so far. I still have more to learn before I will be comfortable feeding Henry a completely raw diet on my own but we are making progress. I am in no way an expert, so if you are interested in implementing the raw diet for your dog please continue to educate yourself and check with your vet. The first thing I did was switch to Stella & Chewy frozen raw patties... there are other brands so again do your research but Henry responded very well to the food they make (meaning no diarrhea or vomiting) and he loved the taste and was just more healthy overall. Send me your DM/PMs with questions, advice or anything else related to the Raw diet that you want to share with me! I'd appreciate it :) Additional show notes can be found at www.gspandme.com/018Check out the previous episodes (7,8,9) and show notes for all of the links for winter gear, toys and items to keep your pup busy INDOORS this winter. :) Thanks for listening and check out more in the show notes (Linked Below) I hope you all enjoy and SUBSCRIBE to my podcast which will go live every Wednesday 5PM (central) perfect way to end the day on a fun note!
