Julie Bell is a mother of four, a doula, herbalist, Christian, feminist, and the creative genius behind Blissful Herbs. In this episode Julie shares the births of her four children. She conceived for the first time while living in Hong Kong and working in foreign aid, and ended up giving birth in her ancestral homeland, Ireland. Julie's first birth was a homebirth under the care of a private midwife, who was hands off and allowed Julie to intuitively travel through her labour and birth. Julie's second baby was born in a shopping mall in New Zealand, after she went into labour with almost no notice and ended up birthing in a breastfeeding cubicle in the parents' room! Her next birth was again in New Zealand, at home and under the care of a private midwife. There was some complications in this birth and Julie shares about how she navigated a tricky birth and advocated for herself to achieve her homebirth. Eight years later she fell pregnant again, and delivered her fourth baby, and first son, at home in Australia. Throughout her birth stories Julie has woven many pieces of wisdom she has picked up as a doula and mother. She shares her experiences of freeing herself from fundamentalist Christian faith, of living through the SARS epidemic in Hong Kong, and speaks to her vision of what an alternative maternity care model could look like.

Julie is the heart behind Blissful Herbs, and if you're a homebirthing mama in Australia, chances are you already know exactly who Julie is, and you've probably even got a Blissful Herbs tea or tincture sitting in your cupboard somewhere. If you haven't come across Julie and her beautiful work yet, then you're in for a real treat in today's episode! We talk about: Julie's childhood experience of trauma and disruption, and how this experience led her on a path towards, and shaped her work as, a herbalist and doula. The wisdom and kindness of plants, and how so many plants offer support and healing especially to women and women's needs. The history of misogyny and racism that continues to undermine women's birthing choices, and how women will always intuitively come back to birthing our babies at home, in safety. The importance of sharing candid stories and images of birth, as well as other aspects of the experience of being a woman, and how Julie's refusal to accept Instagram's “community standards” led to her account being penalised. The relationship between spirituality and motherhood, and the role that Julie's Christian faith plays in her life, her work, and her service in the world. And so much more. If you enjoy today's episode, it would mean the world to me if you left me a review over on iTunes, because that helps to get this podcast in front of other wild mamas who could also benefit from these conversations. Have you ever come across a wise soul who you could listen to for hours? Someone who is full of wisdom through their life experiences and training ...and you hang on every word they say. I had one of those conversations recently with the inspiring Julie Bell.  Julie is a mother, doula, herbalist and activist – is the heart behind Blissful Herbs, which has become a household name across Australia for providing nurturing herbal teas, bath herbs, salves and tinctures for people who love natural living and the healing gifts of nature. After training as a Registered Nurse and working for a decade and a half as a volunteer Christian humanitarian worker in Asia, Juliereturned to Australia. Having experienced 4 glorious homebirths along the way, Julie arrived fired up with a passion to serve birthing families and to support women in reclaiming their own birth-right and birth power. She completed her doula training in 2005 and since then has served hundreds of families in her capacity as birth and post-natal doula. It is the passion of Julie's life to support women in realizing their personal power and learning to wield it un-apologetically. It is the joy of Julie's life to be allied with a remarkable cohort of creative and inspiring women & men who are a force of love and change in the world. Julie is the eternal student and constant journey-woman, always seeking, learning, discovering and expecting. As a birth rights passionista, Julie has been at the fore-front of activism to retain and reclaim birthing rights and choices in Australia and globally. Julie's life-long study of herbs and natural healing continued with completing the Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine in 2016. Julie believes that birth wisdom and herb wisdom are ways by which people are able to re-connect with nature and their own innate wisdom, and that this knowledge is generous and abundant, free to all who with an open heart and mind, hungry to learn. Over and over again, Julie has been privileged to watch in amazement the true work of the doula: the paradigm shift that occurs in an individual woman as she realises her own power and potential and walks into her future, strong and confident, rooted and grounded in the truth and wisdom she had carried within her, all along. Into her 50s and beyond, Julie intends to continue to live radically, wage peace and make revolution. She has no plans to go quietly. In my chat with Julie in episode 26 of the Glowing Mumma Thriving Bubba episode, we explored: >> Why you should trust your body for your birthing journey. >> The role doulas have in a birth setting and how you may have benefit from this support. >> The role of your birthing companion and how this is respected and nurtured by having a doula present at your birth.  >> Debunking a big birth misconception.  >> How to empower yourself for a home birth. >> Which pregnancy and post-partum nourishing herb sparked Julie's interest in becoming a herbalist.  >> A foundation food food used in many cultures across the world during pregnancy and post birth healing.  >> Julie's top herbs to use during pregnancy and for post birth healing. >> Ways you can incorporate herbs into your day and connect with natures medicine.  >> The importance of preconception care and which herbs should be avoided when you're trying for a baby and once pregnant.  SHOW NOTES FOUND HERE: https://www.glowingmumma.com/blog/herbal-medicine-doula-wisdom-for-pregnancy-birth-postpartum-with-julie-bell GLOWING MUMMA INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/glowingmumma.thrivingbubba/

Everything was looking up until it was all destroyed in a moment of madness. On the evening of August 28th, 1997, Julie was working out of her Des Moines office. She'd recently gotten approval to move locations to a high rise building downtown. That night, she was packing up when an unknown killer entered the office and struck. From the very beginning the investigation was almost cold with police acknowledging they had few clues. Over the course of the next six months, three more murders occurred and some bore striking similarities to Julie's.Years later, police would capture a serial killer, tying him to some of those murders but the question still lingers: was Julie Bell Davis one of his victims or is it possible her killer may have been someone she knew and trusted?FB: https://www.facebook.com/TraceEvidencePod/IG: https://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/TW: https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodVisit https://www.trace-evidence.com for more information, case photos, contact information and more.Merch: https://traceevidence.threadless.com/ Music Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Summary:Your thoughts lead your actions. If your inner voice is stuck on a negative loop — like a brokentape — it's hard to change your mental habits for the better. This week, author, coach, andpsychologist Dr. Julie Bell talks about the importance of mindset and how it can guide yourjourney in the right direction, or make you stray from the path. She shares stories from her ownlife about the challenges she's overcome and what she learned to do differently along the way.One way we can work to improve our inner coach is to focus on how we got to where we are, rather than just the outcome itself. It's important to acknowledge successes, of course, but it'seven more critical to celebrate what got us there. That gives us room to learn from our mistakesand really work to change our habits. It also takes the power back from the idea of perfection. There's no such thing as perfect, Bell says. Whenever you reach a milestone, you realize youcan aim higher. But if you're on the right path already, future goals will be attainable if you put inthe work and keep your thoughts ahead of your actions. This Week's Takeaways:-Walk with the Lord, hand-in-hand-Focus on what you can do, instead of what you can't-Train your inner voice to guide you-Own your average-Practice with a purposeQuotes:“Once you choose your focus or your direction, then your voice in your head has to coach youthere. I think, too often, that voice in our head is playing for the other team. So, it's putting us onthe sidelines rather than really bringing out our best.” -Dr. Julie Bell“We have to own our average. Whatever it is that you're doing, you have an average. You havethis achievement side of you that could be your goal and then you have your below average. Alot of times people see if you haven't achieved your goal, it's failure. But really, anytime that youare executing above average, you're in that success field. And that's what you have to be ableto see. If you can see it, you gain confidence. When you have confidence, you have moresuccess. It grows that way.” -Dr. Julie Bell“I think, too often, we celebrate the success — the outcome — and not what got us there. Wehave to reinforce playing the game. We need to recognize the outcome and celebrate how wegot there.” -Dr. Julie Bell“As soon as you start getting closer to your goal, you realize there's another level. So, perfectdoesn't exist.” -Dr. Julie Bell“I think the most important thing in a coaching relationship is a relationship. And so, you've gotto find somebody that you connect with, that can be honest with you, that can be that thinkingpartner, that can help you make decisions.” -Dr. Julie BellContact:You can follow Dr. Julie Bell's work online at themindofachampion.com. Do you know somebody who loves to argue? I'm one of those people. So is Julia Kelly. We're great together. Julia is the most renowned caricature artist west of the Mississippi. She built her business from scratch and is currently starting business #2. I guess I caught her at a good time. When I asked her to do an interview with me. She made an interesting request: "Let's wing it!" She's been on some pretty awesome podcasts including: Entrepreneur on Fire, Double your Freelancing, and Afford Anything. She says: the less scripted the show, the more fun the interview. My old college buddies would agree: Justus loves "doing it live". So I agreed to do the episode with ZERO PREPARATION. Typically I prepare for interviews with rigorous research and outline a list of topics to talk about. In this case I did no such thing. Shoot, I didn't even take notes until after we recorded the conversation. The result was a fascinating conversations that covers art, business and everything in between. Enjoy :D [00:00] This is an unconventional episode. Julia explains why.
