New Orleans. The big easy... is world-renowned for its distinct music, Creole cuisine, unique dialect, and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The music of New Orleans is especially known for its strong association with Jazz Music, as it is universally considered the birthplace of the genre. And the tradition of Jazz has taken on many various forms.. that have either branched out from its original form.. Dixieland or taken entirely different paths altogether. but it would just so happen, that the beloved music of Jazz, would also become an unusual motive for one mysterious serial killer, serving up his abnormal gratification for murder & Jazz music. From May 1918 to October 1919, the city of New Orleans was in a frenzied panic over a roaming serial killer dubbed by the press as "The Axeman", for his brutal killing methods with his particular weapon of choice...an axe., and to make matters worse.. the axes he used to bludgeon his victims, often belonged to the victims themselves.-----FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA & MORE-----Follow Southern Oddities on Twitter and Instagram, by clicking the links, or by searching @SouthernOddPod. The South African automotive landscape – especially when it comes to consumer buying behaviour – has changed more in the last year than in the last few decades, says AutoTrader CEO George Mienie. Accordingly, the industry has had to adapt like never before in order to survive and prosper during this volatile time, he adds. “This has been one of the most disruptive years in the history of the automotive industry, as [the Covid-19] lockdown has seen both production volumes and sales tumble. “This is a global phenomenon. International industry analysis firm Counterpoint Research is predicting a global automotive sales outlook of around 72-million units for 2020 – a 20.1% decline against 2019. “In South Africa, the situation is similar – the used-car market is estimated to have lost more than R16-billion in sales as a result of lockdown in just three months versus 2019, representing a 56% decline in unit sales year-on-year.” While sales volumes may have dropped at the start of lockdown, an analysis of AutoTrader data – the largest digital automotive marketplace in South Africa – revealed that consumer interest in buying a used car did not match this decline. Mienie says the focus of the in-market car shopper simply shifted, if not, intensified. While the auto industry all but ground to a halt under Alert Level 5, car shoppers seemingly became insomniacs, with online car searches increasing by 78% between 1 am and 2 am. Buying patterns were further altered under Level 4. “Faced with the economic challenges of lockdown, South Africans demonstrated their entrepreneurial spirit,” says Mienie. “Some people started sewing and selling masks, for instance. Based on AutoTrader search statistics, others entered the delivery arena. “There was a sharp increase in searches for both small and big vans during Level 4. It’s likely that South Africans saw the opportunity (or necessity) for a delivery offer.” The need for financial survival was reflected both in Alert Level 4 and at the start of Alert Level 3. “From May 1 to June 7, searches for second-hand cars under R50000 increased by almost 300% versus normal pre-lockdown levels,” says Mienie. “It was clear that we were seeing the downtrading of cars, in a bid to protect finances.” As Alert Level 3 became the new norm, searches for cars R100000 and less, or R200000 and less, started becoming more popular again. “R100000 searches increased by 22% and R200000 searches increased by a whopping 51%,” notes Mienie. “This was probably due to industries opening up and people going back to work under Alert Level 3. I believe this also accelerated the swing from new cars to used cars by consumers still under financial pressure.” During Alert Level 3, AutoTrader also saw an emphasis on personal – as opposed to shared – mobility. “Before the lockdown, a Google Trend report showed year-on-year increases in searches for the keyword ‘Uber’, serving as a proxy for the public’s growing demand for ride-hailing services,” notes Mienie. “However, in July, consumers pivoted to personal mobility, evident in consumer-related searches for AutoTrader outpacing Uber. To date, this is a trend that has continued, leading us to believe that consumers feel safer in their own cars.” The emphasis on personal mobility has also seen South Africans aged between 18 and 24 – commonly known as Generation Z – showing a new-found enthusiasm for learning to drive and owning a car. In fact, their interest in cars has tripled in South Africa since the start of lockdown, with traffic by this demographic on AutoTrader having risen by 293% since the start of lockdown. Alert Level 3 also saw used-car inventories – especially when it comes to 2019 year models – increasing by 32% in July compared with the previous month, placing buyers firmly in the pound seat. As the year moves to a close, Mienie says he is pleased to see the market recovering, albeit slowly. “New and used-vehicle sales ar...

It’s no secret that moderate intensity, continuous training (MICT) – usually in the range of a rate of perceived exertion (RPE) of 11 to 13 on the Borg scale of 6 to 20 – has demonstrated significant improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness – for both healthy individuals and patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).While high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is known to improve cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), as measured by the maximum volume of oxygen consumption (VO2Max), in a healthy population, its feasibility, safety, and long-term effects for improving CRF in patients with CAD is unclear.Researchers from the Australia and the United Kingdom – reporting in the online September 2020 issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Cardiology - chose to compare HIIT with MICT for feasibility, safety, adherence, and efficacy of improving VO2 peak in patients with CAD.From May of 2016 to December of 2018, ninety-three CAD patients, age 18 to 80, enrolled in 4-weeks of supervised training in a private hospital cardiac rehabilitation program – continuing over 12 months with home-based training. The HIIT group performed 4 x 4-minute high intensity intervals at an RPE of 15 to 18 with 3-minute active recovery intervals at an RPE of 11 to 13. The MICT group performed 40 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise at an RPE of 11 to 13.Both groups were asked to complete three sessions per week – two supervised and one home-based over four weeks – followed by home-based training (three weekly sessions) for the remaining eleven months. The pre and post program testing included VO2 peak at baseline and four weeks – with further testing at 3, 6, and 12 months. Safety was ascertained throughout the study period, as was, “adherence to the exercise protocol, (which) was assessed as 70% attendance or higher at the recommended number of exercise sessions, when training at the prescribed exercise intensity during the exercise sessions.”The study demonstrated, “that HIIT is superior to MICT for improving cardiorespiratory fitness during a 4-week hospital-based CR (cardiac rehab) program in patients with CAD; but offers similar improvements to MICT at 12 months.”In short, the HIIT protocol was safe, feasible, and successfully implemented in a home-based environment with similar adherence to MICT over 12 months. Before you attempt to set up your own home-based HIIT program, first check with your physician.

People get cramps for all sorts of reasons, including underlying injury, disease, and medication side effects. The exercise-associated cramps you get during a running race may be influenced by some of these secondary factors. They may also be influenced by your genes: one of the best predictors of cramping is whether you’ve cramped in the past. The best way to avoid falling while trail running is to study the trail for hazards well in advance. But if you run, you will fall. When you’re going down, throw your hands out to protect your head and face, but don’t stiffen your elbows. With pools closed likely for the foreseeable future. Swim in the Wild! From May to August of 1934, Minneapolis was rocked by a strike that would forever change the course of US labor history. This was the strike of Teamsters Local 574, a union led by Trotskyists. Today, as the US working class regains its pulse after decades of lull in the class struggle, these events can provide us with many practical lessons for how labor can fight back and win through militant action. Steve Iverson of Boston Socialist Revolution presents on this topic. Intro music: "There is Power in a Union" (Version by Joe Glazer and Bill Friedland). Sometime I wonder how the world will change post covid- or how the board questions will change? And that is clearly seen in this article titled- Yip L et al. Serious adverse health events, including death, associated with ingesting alcohol-based hand sanitizers containing methanol — Arizona and New Mexico, May–June 2020. MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2020 Aug 14; 69:1070. hand sanitizing gels and foams containing ≥60% alcohol (either ethanol or isopropyl alcohol) has been proven to be effective -- Methanol is not an acceptable substitute in this paper they looked at 15 cases of methanol poisoning due to ingestion of methanol-containing hand sanitizers From May through June 2020 All patients had a history of ingesting alcohol-based hand sanitizer presentation included visual disturbance, seizures, gastrointestinal involvement, altered mental status, and anion-gap acidosis with blood pH varying from 6.70 to 7.23. in the end Four patients died and three others were discharged with new visual impairment. I can see it now- beth comes into the office and has visual changes and slightly altered mentation – she is known to be a prepper and vary scared of covid and he husband said she recently read that if you swallow hand sanitizer it will kill covid19 just like it does when it is on your hands—what is the most likely diagnosis for this pt. and the answer will be methanol poisoning! Next artciel Are antibiotics as good as surgery for pediatric appendicitis? The answer depends on who is asking the question In this trial Association of Nonoperative Management Using Antibiotic Therapy vs Laparoscopic Appendectomy With Treatment Success and Disability Days in Children With Uncomplicated Appendicitis nonrandomized study of nonoperative treatment of 1068 pediatric patients with uncomplicated appendicitis. Roughly 65% chose to undergo urgent laparoscopic appendectomy, while 35% chose nonoperative management with IV antibiotics in the hospital followed by oral antibiotics at home The primary outcome was defined as not requiring appendectomy within 1 year of study enrollment. And in the end Two thirds of youth who received antibiotics to treat uncomplicated appendicitis avoided surgery, and Nonoperative management was associated with a 67% success rate for avoiding surgery in the subsequent year But the important thing here is how you power your study- you power it to find the minimal clinically important difference (MCID)—the MCID is a a mystery- you wont a number that is reasonable difference in practice for the reader but attainable for the study so we don’t have a million neg. trials and what this difference is completely determined by the authors. Sure they can look at other studies and see what they used but ultimately this is up to the authors—if in this trial they say I think the clinical meaningful difference is to avoid 25% of surgeries then they set that as the standard and BOOM in this trial about 65% of surgeries were avoided in those in the antibiotic arm. This trial would have been a smashing hit! But instead the authors chose a much hard outcome of 70% based on surgeons they work with! And when you asked parents they said ‘well I think 50% would have been good enough’--- HOWEVER since 70% of pts had to avoid going to surgery- this means it was a negative trial. I think this is a great article that points to the shared decision making conversation because no article or paper is 100% if you do this then this will happen, bit if you say well if you do this then about 2/3 of the time you will prevent having to go to surgery that is a much different conversation than well if you do this then you wont have to go to surgery because the truth is they still do around 33% of the time which is good enough odds for me and my child or at least any child I would be babysitting since I don’t have children. So I ask again is it ok to spare 2 out of every 3 children a surgery and invasive procedure, I guess it just depends who you are asking https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2769373?guestAccessKey=7518012e-17e8-48cd-8278-c3b68652db52&utm_source=silverchair&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=article_alert-jamainternalmedicine&utm_content=olf&utm_term=081720 Is an article that will leave you breathless- in jama internal medicine Effect of Sustained-Release Morphine for Refractory Breathlessness in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease on Health StatusA Randomized Clinical Trial They asked the question- Does regular, low-dose, oral sustained-release morphine improve disease-specific health status or cause respiratory adverse effects in patients with moderate to very severe chronic breathlessness due to advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? and the results were = --- In this randomized clinical trial of 111 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, morphine 10 mg twice daily for 4 weeks significantly improved CAT SCORES or the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Assessment Test scores . compared to placebo This is good we think!! Except when you read the study you see in the sample size they say- To detect a mean (SD) change in CAT of 3.8 (6.1) “62 participants per group needed to be included. remember thiswas only 111 pts so no matter how you cut it they didnt achieve adequete power of their study. The CAT questionnaire consists of eight questions, assessing the symptoms on a scale from 0 to 5. The total score ranges from 0 to 40, with higher scores representing worse health status. And remember they wanted a difference of 3.8 but in the end there was only a 2.18 difference ---And the authors say but our finding of a 2.18 difference is important because there is previous data saying that the minimal clinical important difference (MCID) for the CAT is 2·0 to 3·0 points. YOU CANT DO THAT!! Its like saying I am going to do a triple back flip then after doing a double back flip saying well that is still really good and worth a blue ribbon!! NO NO NO not everyone gets a blue ribbon- sometimes negative trials are important or just as important as the positive trial!! the authors are saying we understand we powered and ran our study to find a 3.8 difference in the cat scale and we understand that we barely found half of that but because of cherry picking study we found from 3 yrs ago we still think our trial is ‘positive’ and we will think that there should be “a larger and longer trial is warrented” and I would say – it is not warrented---and incase you were wondering—yes this is absolutely another study where the authors were tainted by drug company conflicts of interest but am sure you already assumed that next article Effect of Long-term Vitamin D3 Supplementation vs Placebo on Risk of Depression or Clinically Relevant Depressive Symptoms and on Change in Mood ScoresA Randomized Clinical Trial Long-term vitamin D https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2768978 Roughly 18,000 adults (aged 50 and up for men, 55 and up for women) free of depression at baseline, including 1700 at risk for recurrence of depression but without treatment over the preceding 2 years, were randomized to receive either vitamin D3 (2000 IU per day of cholecalciferol) or placebo. After a median treatment duration of 5 years, rates of depression were similar between groups at about 13 per 1000 person-years. Mood scores were also similar. The authors write: "The findings do not support a role for supplemental vitamin D3 in depression prevention among adults." Read Dr. Peter Roy-Byrne's take on this study in NEJM Journal Watch Psychiatry in the coming days. Any benefit is seen in observational data!!! Confounders!! We all want it to be but the evidence just doesn’t support vitamin d or at least not when we look at the evidence for the RCT

Announced on June 15th, Air France plans to operate scheduled flights from Paris to Shanghai once weekly. As the relevant Chinese authorities began to relax travel restrictions, Air France announced that it would resume passenger service on the Shanghai route in Mainland China from June 18, 2020, with one flight per week, operated by Boeing B777-300. Depending on government approval, travel restrictions and customer needs, Air France will gradually increase the frequency of passenger flights to China. The first Air France flight AF198 to China will depart from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport at 23:30 on June 18, 2020, and arrive at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 16:45 on June 19. In addition, Air France plans to operate scheduled flights from Paris to Shanghai once weekly, and will issue an official notice after confirming flight authorisation to open sales. From May 11, 2020, all Air France-operated flights will undergo a temperature check on passengers one by one before departure. Passengers need to wear masks throughout the flights; all crew members and agents who are in contact with passengers are also required to cover themselves. “In the context of the new crown epidemic crisis, Air France has always put the health and safety of its passengers and staff first. All Air France team members are doing their best to protect the overall health of passengers. And safety, to ensure that passengers travel safely and worry-free. After this difficult period, we are very pleased to welcome our passengers to choose to take Air France flights again to fly to Chinese destinations.” Mr. Pang Daoan, General Manager of Air France KLM Greater China In addition to resuming passenger flights to mainland China, Air France and KLM will continue to operate cargo flights on Chinese routes to ensure the continued supply of medical supplies from China. Before restarting passenger service, Air France’s operational activities were mainly focused on cargo flights between China and France, and actively participated in the air transportation of masks and medical supplies between China and France. Air France currently operates 27* flights a week on routes in Greater China, using Boeing B777 all-cargo aircraft, Boeing B777 passenger aircraft cargo bays and cabins to carry equipment for cargo operations. (*Among them: Shanghai Pudong-Paris Charles de Gaulle 5 pure cargo flights per week, Paris Charles de Gaulle-Shanghai Pudong 8 passenger-to-cargo freight flights per week, Beijing-Paris CDG weekly 7 pure cargo flights, Hong Kong-Paris Charles de Gaulle weekly 7 pure cargo flights) At the same time, Air France is gradually increasing its 2020 summer flight plan. Air France plans to provide flights to 150 destinations worldwide this summer, accounting for 80% of the usual route network As of the end of June, the planned flight capacity will return to 20% of the same period in previous years. Depending on the cancellation of travel restrictions in various countries, Air France will continue to gradually increase the number of flights and destinations. It is expected to reach 35% of the original flight plan in July and 40% in August. Air France plans to lay off 8,000 to 10,000 employees by 2022. According to the report of the French mainstream economic daily newspaper “Echo”, Air France will announce the specific number of layoffs in the company restructuring plan submitted from the end of June to the beginning of July. According to the plan, Air France will lay off employees on the basis of voluntary departure, involving multiple positions such as pilots, flight attendants, and ground crews. HOP! – Air France’s subsidiary airline, which mainly operates domestic French and European countries, may be the most affected. .

From May 10th to June 21st, I am preaching through a sermon series called “How Long, O Lord?” about suffering, loss, lament, and trust. The longer you live, the more you suffer – death, racism, violence, unemployment, loneliness, depression, anxiety. There are many ways you can respond to suffering and loss, but the way that the Bible gives us is lament. Lament is “a prayer in pain that leads to trust,” as Mark Vroegop says in his book “Dark clouds, deep mercy.” It consists of four movements: turn to God, voice your complaint, ask boldly, and choose to trust. In these movements, we resist the temptation to stuff down our emotions, on the one hand, or to be overcome by them, on the other hand. We do not simply resign ourselves to what has happened to us as our fate, but we ask boldly for what it is we need. And in the end, we choose to trust in God, that whether or not He gives us what we ask for, he is still good, and still loves us, and can be trusted.

“If Pentecost Brought Power, Where is the Power” by Pastor Gary Watkins Sr. From May 31,2020 The post If Pentecost Brought Power, Where is the Power_ appeared first on Greater St. Luke COGIC.
This week on Priority One --- We trek out Star Trek: Picard’s possible series longevity, Sir Patrick’s history with Star Trek, Mike McMahon’s vision for Lower Decks, and what Simon Pegg knows about the next Trek film - spoiler: it isn’t much! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online goes to Red Alert, takes on rubberbanding, and Star Trek Timelines announces its newest event! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you think Star Trek is better suited for Television, Movies, or is there a place for Trek on both? AND CQ: What’s your Star Trek Online Red Alert of choice? Why? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Akiva Goldsman Talks Picard Delays are an inevitability - even more so now, during the pandemic. But with those delays comes anticipation, and sometimes opportunity. At least that’s what Star Trek Executive Producer and Oscar winning writer Akiva Goldsman thinks. Last week, Goldsman sat down with Collider to discuss Star Trek: Picard season 2, how quarantine has changed the timetable, and how the delays may be a blessing in disguise. Goldsman discussed those inevitable delays we just discussed, telling Collider ”We were to start shooting in June, which I guarantee you we will not unless the world opens tomorrow. We had broken the season, we were about halfway through the writing of it. You know, we will start as soon as we can once the world opens, you know? Prep will have to resume, and then we’ll start. We know what it is, and it’s cool.” In regards to Picard’s early “dark tone”, as well as Covid-19’s silver-lining, Goldsman explained ”I kept saying, ‘They’re reviewing the first act of a movie.’ The first act of a movie is always dark. If you stopped It’s a Wonderful Life at the bridge, it’s a really dark movie! Because fundamentally in a longform narrative, it’s a redemption story, it’s a healing story, it has to be bad at the beginning so it gets good at the end, otherwise there’s nothing to fix. So we’re in this weird world now where we create one narrative object but we dole it out bit by bit, which is fascinating. And can be kind of fun. But what you really want is to be able to refine your setups once you’ve written your payoffs… if in fact you could have the time to write 10 hours first, that would be amazing. And maybe we will.” When asked how many seasons Goldsman foresaw in Picard’s future, he responded ”I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a “let’s just keep going forever” show[...]Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it… As I’m sure you know, he was not interested in coming back. And we did a lot of… really good collaborative story breaking and talking and you know and I think he’s particularly delighted in a good way about having come back. And we will rely on that good will until he feels he’s done.” Sir Patrick Lets Loose With CBS This Morning Speaking of Sir Patrick, the “Picard” star had a candid interview with CBS This Morning about his history with Star Trek, Picard, and his daily sonnets. When asked by "CBS This Morning" co-host Tony Dokoupil whether he always aspired to Produce a series, Stewart said ”No. I was too naïve, too new at the game of series television. And I had so much work to do. I mean[...]the first couple of years, I didn't have a life or a social life at all. We'd work a five-day week; 13-, 14-, sometimes 15-hour days, especially towards the end of the week. And Saturday morning, I would allow myself a little sleep in. And then I would do my own laundry, which by the way, I still do. It's an obsession with me.” Stewart was frank about his early days on the TNG set, saying /”I lectured my fellow cast members about some of the fooling around that was going on on the set, and the games that they were playing and the singing and the jokes and the ruining shots. And there was this horrible silence. And it was Denise Crosby who said to me, 'Trick, come on, we gotta have some fun!' And I said, 'We are not here to have fun.' I said that! And that became, you know, a legendary quote, as I progressively got sillier and sillier as the series wore on.” Finally, in regards to Stewart’s charming daily sonnets, Sir Patrick said ”I had no idea what I was saying or what it meant. But there was something in the language” Mike McMahon Tells Us Something About Lower Decks Star Trek’s first animated series since the 70’s is set to air this year, and the buzz is starting to form around the upcoming “Lower Decks”. In the interview from our first story, Akiva Goldsman said ”Lower Decks] literally couldn’t seem funnier to me”. But what does series showrunner and Star Trek super-fan Mike McMahon think? We’re glad you asked! McMahon discussed the series with Slashfilm this week, explaining the premise and structure of the show ”If you’re watching Lower Decks, you’re getting a full Star Trek episode from the perspective of people who are having their own social and emotional stories and their own sci-fi stories, but they just aren’t on the bridge. They don’t have the information the bridge is getting, and they don’t have the responsibility.” McMahon, who was the showrunner on the popular “Rick and Morty”, explained how Lower Decks isn’t a Star Trek skinned version of his previous show ”A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters. How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can’t have a Morty [from Rick and Morty] in Star Trek. You can’t just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they’re very much ingrained in Star Trek.” McMahon gave a little flavor to the series main characters, explaining Ensign Beckett Mariner as ”kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn’t a captain and didn’t have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.” and Ensign Brad Boimler as /”so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can’t follow his gut.” Simon Pegg Tells Us Nothing About Star Trek IV Oh Simon Pegg. How sick you must be of answering questions about Star Trek. But bless your heart - you keep doing it. This week, Collider had the honor of asking Pegg about a possible upcoming movie that he knows very little about. Pegg was asked what he and his castmates knew about an upcoming film, to which he replied ”If [Paramount says], ‘We’d like to do another movie,’ I’m sure we’ll all jump at the chance. I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don’t know. Noah Hawley’s project has been mentioned, and maybe that will happen. I don’t know anything about that. So yeah, I’m as in the dark as everyone else, I’m in the same boat as you guys.” Pegg discussed the more “niche” audience of Trek, when compared to - say - the Marvel Universe, and offered ”the obvious thing to do would be to not go for that massive spectacle, go for something a little bit more restrained in the vein of the original series. Yes, that would be a brilliant thing to do, and I’m sure it probably has been discussed… You specialize a little bit more.” Finally, Pegg may have talked himself out of future Star Trek work, telling Collider ”Maybe TV is a better place for [Star Trek] now. Television has evolved so much. It’s become something which is very much a contemporary, a peer of cinema. It’s simply viewed in a different way. It isn’t a reduced scope anymore. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. That’s where it started, you know.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover PC: All the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, now put your shields up If Operation Delta Rising, the Draanuur colony, and the Khitomer-class battlecruiser have taught us anything, it’s the value of collaboration across different cultures towards our common goals. However our less-pleasant galactic neighbors have taken the hint, and are launching a coordinated multi-front offensive across the galaxy. It’s teamwork that makes the existential threat work, I guess. From May 28th at 8 AM Pacific to June 4th at 10 AM Pacific, PC captains will be able to play all five Red Alert Task Force Operations: Borg Red Alert Elachi Red Alert Tholian Red Alert Tzenkethi Red Alert Nakuhl Red Alert Players will receive the normal rewards for each playthrough, and each day’s first completed Red Alert will also grant Daily Event Progress on their account. After receiving five daily progress token players will be able to claim either a Universal Tech Upgrade or Specialization Point grand prize for their account. The grand prize can also be purchased outright on a prorated scale, relative to daily progress made in the event. Players who complete a Red Alert TFO each day after getting the grand prize will receive a dilithium ore bonus, starting at 8,000 and increasing by 1,000 each day. So that there’s no confusion, captains, I want to stress: THERE. ARE. FIVE. ALERTS. Console: Eyyyy, La Sirena From June 2nd at 8 AM Pacific to June 23rd at 10 Pacific, captains on console will have another crack at simultaneous Infinity R&D and Duty Officer Promotions. As usual, during the promotion R&D Packs and Duty Officer Packs purchased from the C-Store and opened will grant either an additional 10 Lobi Crystals or a Special Requisition Choice Pack - Tier 6 Promotional Ship Choice Pack. And this time a new ship is making its console debut in the Ship Choice Pack—the contentiously-named La Sirena T6 Heavy Raider, as seen in Star Trek: Picard. Console: To Hell With Honor Also coming to consoles, from June 2nd through June 23rd, players can assault J’Ula’s moon based shipyards in the “To Hell With Honor” Featured TFO Event. Just like it was on PC, this is a unique TFO featuring space combat over a moon surface map. Destroy J’Ula’s ships before they can join her fleet, and deal with unexpected guests provoked by J’Ula’s Mycelial weapon technology. This featured TFO is part two of the four part Event Campaign on consoles, with each day’s completion rewarding 50 Event Campaign progress points. To see the event rewards, like the DOT-7 Drones last seen on Short Treks, follow the link to STO’s blog in our show notes. Rubberbanding Survey Picture this: you’re tearing across the Park in the Dyson Ground Battlezone like, or because, there won’t be a tomorrow. The Voth are almost done collecting Omega particles, and you’re the only one who can stop them. The V-Rex is in sight, you ready your Orbital Strike—and suddenly you’re 50 meters away, running over the same patch of grass again. And again. And again. And scene. You, mon capitan, have been rubberbanded. Player complaints about lagging in MMOs are as old as MMOs themselves. However Star Trek Online has *allegedly* been more badly-affected than usual recently. On Monday the 25th, the official Star Trek Online Twitter account shared a link to a SurveyMonkey poll, asking players to describe their recent experiences. The poll includes your general geographic location, proxy usage, ISP, and in-game locations you find particularly troublesome. Link in the show notes. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS Join us for TFO Thursday - each Thursday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium. Epsilon Fleet - another Tier V upgrade almost ready to go on cooldown. OTHER GAMING NEWS Star Trek Timelines Events From Thursday May 28 at noon ET to June 1 at noon ET, Star Trek Timelines will feature the Blundering Terror Galaxy Event for the Federation, Ferengi Alliance, and Borg factions. No details for the event narrative have been released but we do have the following key details. The 4-star Professor Scott--Great Scott! [throw toilet paper roll]--will be returning as a featured crew member, joined by the new 5-star crew member Determined Paris and 4-star Grebnedlog. Grebnedlog, for those whose rubber bands may be broken, is the captain of the Pakled ship in the TNG episode "Samaritan Snare." As always, event crew members grant the highest bonuses. However variants of Tom Paris, Montgomery Scott, and crew members with the Thief trait will also make you strong and make your Faction go. The winning Faction may not attain the 24th level of awareness, but they will receive a new 5-star Kira-variant crew member. 20th century science fiction author Kay Eaton, seen in the DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars," will be a featured crew member in the next event starting on 06/04.

JAY LENO DRIVES THE TESLA CYBERTRUCK, MUSK RIDES SHOTGUN "The newest season of Jay Leno's Garage has started on May 20, 2020 and if you've been keeping updated with the beat, one of the cars that will be featured on the show is the Tesla Cybertruck." Says Motor1.com: "When asked what will be changed in the production-spec, Musk said that they may have made the show car a bit bigger than what's intended. The real thing will be smaller by five percent, although Musk has confirmed that the proportions will be the same. This kind of contradicts with Musk's tweet before, saying that the Cybertruck's width will be closer to 82 inches instead of 80 inches. But then again, we'll never know the actual measurement until the production version becomes a reality, so let's take this with a sprinkle of salt." @elonmusk: “Reviewed [the Cybertruck] design with Franz last night. Even 3% smaller is too small. It will be pretty much this size [referring to the prototype].” @elonmusk: “We’ll probably do a smaller, tight world truck at some point.” https://www.motor1.com/news/424922/tesla-cybertruck-jay-leno-musk/ TRITIUM LAUNCHES WORLD-FIRST “PLUG AND CHARGE” TECHNOLOGY "Tritium, a leader in electric vehicle (EV) DC fast charging technology, has launched its game-changing Plug and Charge solution, the first of its kind in the world available to the market." The Tritium offering is the first to market and is available immediately for charge point operators to deploy on Tritium’s PK350kW DC High Power Chargers. The technology promises to reshape the customer experience for the driver and enable the once-siloed approach to charging payments to be broken down with disparate charging networks able to interoperate. Drivers will be able to approach a charger, regardless of the charging network operator, and their charge session will be automatically and securely billed from the moment the charger plug connects to the vehicle." James Kennedy, chief technology officer and co-founder, Tritium: "“Right now, EV drivers approaching an EV charger will likely have to sign up for that network’s system to access it and pay for the charging session, adding unnecessary time to the experience and siloing charger networks; even accounting for the ability to pay by credit card at some chargers this is wildly inconvenient,” he said. “With Plug and Charge, you’ll be able to plug the charger into the vehicle and it just charges, from your battery to your account.” https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/tritium-launches-worldfirst-a-plug-and-chargea-20200522 TESLA NEXT-GEN ROADSTER’S SPACEX THRUSTERS "Standing by the flagship supercar and the newly-released Model Y crossover, Musk and Leno were recently featured in a promo video talking about the next-generation Roadster. Leno, for one, noted that sometimes, Musk’s ideas are so out of this world that he can’t really tell if the CEO is joking or not. Musk responded that when it comes to the Roadster’s rocket thrusters, he actually is serious. He then described exactly how the “main” thruster of the next-generation Roadster works." Says Teslarati. “We’re gonna use ultra high pressure compressed air. It’s a cold gas thruster. The main thruster will be behind the license plate. So for acceleration, it drops the license plate, and behind the license plate is a rocket thruster. It’s like full-on James Bond,” Musk said. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-roadster-space-thruster-details-elon-musk-video/ JAGUAR-LAND ROVER WILL BUILD ELECTRIFIED SVO PERFORMANCE MODELS "Jaguar-Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations make the group’s highest performance and most exclusive models, none of which have been electric thus far. However, that will reportedly change as JLR intends to launch SV-branded plug-in hybrids and full EVs in the near future." Says Yahoo News: "Apparently, the reason why the i-Pace won’t be given the SVO treatment has to do with the fact that it sits on a bespoke platform designed specially for it and one that won’t be used to underpin any other vehicle. Yet what this means instead is there will be a hot version of the upcoming XJ saloon, which will be a direct rival to the AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz EQS." https://uk.news.yahoo.com/jaguar-land-rover-build-electrified-114000590.html ELECTRIC CARS ARE ABOUT TO START ROLLING OUT OF THE ARIZONA DESERT "Through a series of logistical maneuvers, help from parts suppliers and a bit of good fortune, Lucid executives say they’ve been able to move forward with installation of critical assembly-line equipment such as robotic arms and precision tools including stamping presses and jigs." Reports Bloomberg: "A big contribution of good karma has come from location. Arizona did not prohibit construction work along with much of the rest of the U.S. starting in March. After completing the steel structure in February, Lucid finished the exterior walls and roofing and recently has taken delivery of production equipment from suppliers including Hokuto, a parts-mounting device maker. Equipment manufacturers based in Asia were quick to reopen after Japan, China and South Korea allowed businesses to resume operations. While the initial production volume the company is targeting is in the tens of thousands, the plant has been designed to eventually make as many as 380,000 vehicles. That’s more than the roughly 367,500 vehicles Tesla delivered last year, all of which were built at its plant in California." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-22/electric-cars-are-about-to-start-rolling-out-of-the-arizona-desert CONNECTED EVS COULD HELP POWER THE GRID: CALIFORNIA UTILITY STUDIES HOW "Southern California Edison (SCE) plans to launch a demonstration project for "vehicle-to-grid" or "V2G" technology, in which vehicles both charge and discharge power to the grid. More than 200,000 electric cars are currently on the road in SCE's service area, and 700,000 in the entire state of California, a press release from the utility said. A car with a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack—the size pack used in the Tesla Model S and Model X—could power an average California household for nearly a week, according to SCE." Says Green Car Reports: "The demonstration project aims to see if V2G could lower customers' electric bills in exchange from energy supplied from their cars while connected to the grid. The project will also look at standardization of equipment needed to connect cars to the grid." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128252_connected-evs-could-help-power-the-grid-california-utility-studies-how SOLAR ENERGY FARMS COULD OFFER SECOND LIFE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERIES "As electric vehicles rapidly grow in popularity worldwide, there will soon be a wave of used batteries whose performance is no longer sufficient for vehicles that need reliable acceleration and range. But a new study shows that these batteries could still have a useful and profitable second life as backup storage for grid-scale solar photovoltaic installations, where they could perform for more than a decade in this less demanding role." According to ScienceBlog: "The study, published in the journal Applied Energy, was carried out by six current and former MIT researchers. A recent report from McKinsey Corp. shows that as demand for backup storage for renewable energy projects grows between now and 2030, second use EV batteries could potentially meet half of that demand, Mathews says. Some EV companies, he says, including Rivian, founded by an MIT alumnus, are already designing their battery packs specifically to make this end-of-life repurposing as easy as possible." https://scienceblog.com/516548/solar-energy-farms-could-offer-second-life-for-electric-vehicle-batteries/ RENAULT LAUNCHES ZITY ELECTRIC CAR SHARING SERVICE IN PARIS Groupe Renault continues the operational deployment of the ZITY electric car-sharing service in Paris. From May 20th, a fleet of 500 100% electric Renault ZOE cars is available to Parisians on a self-service basis. The launch of this service, announced in March and suspended due to containment measures, is being carried out in accordance with the recommendations defined in the national sanitary protocol for exiting containment defined by the Ministry of Transport. Thanks to the ZITY mobile application, users can view on a map, at any time of the day or night, the vehicle closest to their position. Reservation is instantaneous and the vehicle is unlocked via the application. To end the rental, the vehicle must be parked in Paris, on any public square above ground and locked. A guaranteed battery level displayed thanks to the on-board technology in the Renault ZOE ZITY allows all the information on the dashboard, including the battery level, to be displayed in real time. Below the minimum required level, the vehicle is no longer available for hire and is quickly recharged by the ZITY teams.
