Kev & Rob both wish that the production of Star Trek: Picard Season 3 could have afforded just one more set this week as a very special Klingon Bird-of-Prey makes its return to the screen in "The Bounty". Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was the fourth big-screen adventure for the Star Trek crew, with the group forced to travel back in time to the 1980s to recover a pair of humpback whales. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss defunct donut chains and timeless landmarks. With Spock's memory and skills largely restored, the Enterprise crew head back to Earth on the Klingon Bird of Prey they hijacked in the previous movie. Meanwhile a probe playing whalesong advances on Earth, threatening to end all life as cataclysmic weather ensues. Travelling back in time 300 years, Kirk and co. seek to acquire two humpback whales, extinct in their time, to respond to the probe and end it's assault. There they meet Dr Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks) and her friends, George & Gracie. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was directed by Leonard Nimoy, just as the previous film had been. The screenplay and story were by Harve Bennett and Nicholas Meyer. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether a triple dumbass could theoretically exist. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was released in 1986. It is 2 hours and 2 minutes long. It can be viewed on Paramount+ in the United States and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries.
Today's podcast is also available in video format at: https://youtu.be/XsZRjC-EOLw Would a corporate ethics or emotional intelligence employee training course from a healthy American company work aboard a Klingon "Bird of Prey" ship in Star Trek? Probably not. (Don't worry, you don't have to be a Trekkie to understand the thought experiment in today's video!) That's because, whether we are aware of it or not, there is an assumed narrative structure in our culture that informs our ethical norms. But we bump up against a real problem in postmodernism with the claim that any transcultural, overarching guiding story is an attempt to colonize other cultures and that ethics can only be relativistic cultural guidelines . If this is true, would we every be able to say that particular ethical norms in the fictional Klingon or the ancient Spartan culture are wrong? In my last conversation with John Vervaeke and Paul VanderKlay, John brought up a sincere concern about Christianity as a force of cultural assimilation. To use Star Trek lingo, does Christianity function like the Borg? Or do we need to distinguish between Christendom and The Way of Jesus? #culturaltheology #theologyofculture #startrek #scienceandfaith If you find this podcast to be helpful and you want to see it continue ad-free, would you consider becoming a supporter on Patreon? Star Trek: Lower Decks visits the “lower decks” of a Klingon Bird of Prey and a Vulcan starship as junior officers all collide in a mission involving the Pakleds.
The Warrior-Poets return! Or are they Warrior-Comedians? The Benzite Mendon - not to be confused with Mordock - joins the Enterprise crew, while Riker joins the crew of the Klingon Bird of Prey Pagh as part of an officer exchange program. Riker is challenged as a fish out of Star Fleet pretty much immediately, and his familiarity with Klingon cuisine only makes him more attractive to the women, of course. There's a space bacteria attacking the hull of both ships, but poor Mendon didn't finish his analysis in time to impress, well, anyone. Kate hosts this episode and loves the gagh, Jimmie is in to the Klingon branding, Erik enjoyed the laser porn and Greg just wants to see Riker's tight seven minute stand up routine. This week on Episode 515 of Priority One: the Federation Headquarters finds a new home in Ohio, the USS Steve Jobs–I mean, Kelvin–might have a reason for why it looks so flashy, and in gaming Star Trek Online's new time currency sink might have worked. Later Dr. Michael Chan looks OnScreen with an analysis and review of the Short Trek “Children of Mars.” This week's Community Questions are: Do interviews with creators ever come across your radar, outside of listening to podcasts? Do they help fill in continuity gaps for you? And What service in Star Trek Online do you keep coming back to over and over? Would you like it to be made available for purchase with dilithium? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds The Federation's Housewarming Party By Elio Lleo One thing that can be said about Star Trek fans is that they work hard to celebrate their passions for the franchise–often by donating their time and talents for labors of love. The fan group known as The Federation is one such organization. For over 36 years the group's goal has been to: “...provide, promote, and support education and positive legal activism in the area of human rights, racial and sexual equality, environmental causes, and space exploration. To promote a more positive impression of Star Trek fans as intelligent, socially conscious, active individuals who are aware and concerned about the real world today.” Image: The Federation. Having worked directly with Gene Roddenberry in its early years, the group boasts over 2,000 members with over 30 chapters. Now, the group is settling down at its official headquarters in Huron, Ohio. Joining them to christen the new location will be Nichelle Nichols–known best as Lt. Uhura in the Original Series. Money raised during this event will go to Nichelle's retirement fund. So, if you're in Ohio the weekend of September 10th, be sure to grab a ticket to one of Nichols's final appearances. It's Kot'baval in July! By Rosco McQueen What to get your favourite Trekkie for Christmas? It's the question you have six months to ponder, and thankfully we at Priority One are here to help. Unfortunately, for the Captain Picard fanatic, I have terrible news. In the Prop Store's most recent auction, the original flute from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Inner Light, sold for $190,000. It was sold among other items including the original Statler and Waldorf puppet heads from The Muppets, Harry Potter's glasses, and Indiana Jones' fedora as worn in The Temple Of Doom, which sold for $375,000. https://twitter.com/propstore_com/status/1409981682841624579 If those items were a little outside your budget, then Hallmark has previewed its exclusive offerings coming to the home version of San Diego and New York Comic-Cons. They'll be offering limited quantities of a few exclusive ornaments, including a Star Trek Klingon Bird of Prey ornament. Released in honour of the 35th anniversary of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the Klingon Bird of Prey ship comes complete with the HMS Bounty paint stylings from the movie. It will set you back $35, with only 3,750 available. Or give them an empty box and tell them it's phased. Your call. Image: Hallmark Licensing LLC, via Slashfilm. Trek Different By Elio Lleo Occasionally the creators of Star Trek throw the fans a curveball. Whether it's giving Klingons a complete make-over, using a Rod Stewart song as a theme, or...giving Klingons another make-over. But one change that really stirred the pot was the bridge redesign in the Kelvin Timeline. For all intents and purposes, JJ Abrams put an Apple Store on the bridge with lots of additional lens flare. But, one intrepid fan over at DenOfGeek wants to try and help fill in those canonical gaps with some of his own thoughts and observations. There's no way AppleCare's covering that much liquid damage. Image: ViacomCBS, via Geek Agent Media. You see, according to Ryan Britt's headcanon, it all makes sense. First, it starts with an explanation from screenwriter Roberto Orci and director JJ Abrams. Orci seems to have explained that Starfleet reverse-engineered the Narada's tech from scans taken by the USS Kelvin. Britt goes on to point out that this might be a plausible explanation given that nuTrek on Paramount+ has finally embraced and acknowledged the existence of the Kelvin Timeline. So, there you have it: the USS Steve Jobs explained(?). That leads us to our first community question this week: Do interviews with creators ever come across your radar, outside of listening to podcasts? Do they help fill in continuity gaps for you? Let us know in the comment section for this episode at priorityonepodcast.com or by replying to our community question post on our social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds The Dilithium Sink Soars By Rosco McQueen The past week in Star Trek Online has seen a changing fashion scene. Summer is definitely in, with short shorts, shorter bikinis and transcendent tribbles adding colour to the beautiful Risa rainbow at sunset. In orbit and in sector space, starships across the galaxy are sporting their shiny new vanity shields, as players take advantage of the commodity now being available for purchase with dilithium. They're high-cost premium items, and making them available this way is designed to lower the cost of dilithium on the exchange. This week Star Trek Online community manager Mike Fatum posted a question to twitter, asking the community for their feedback on other items that players would spend their hard-earned dilithium on over and over, more like a service than a one-off purchase. https://twitter.com/AmbassadorKael/status/1412452222894366720 That leads us to our next community question this week: What service in Star Trek Online do you keep coming back to over and over? Would you like it to be made available for purchase with dilithium? Star Trek Adventures On The Macro Scale By Thomas Reynolds Ah, technobabble: the true universal language of the future. Reversing polarities, phase inducers going out of alignment, better run a level 4 diagnostic–this plausible nonsense makes us go. Without it we wouldn't have Particles of the Week, Engineering would have no miracle workers, and there would never be Some Kind of Anomaly. So if you want your Star Trek Adventures campaign to feel truly Trek, you'd better be ready to **** like Starfleet's finest–or let the computer handle it for you. Or not. Image: ViacomCBS, via TrekCore. On June 25th, Continuing Adventures shared STA fan Mirco's instructions for making a Roll20 virtual tabletop technobabble generator. Mirco's macro script pulls technobabble terms from random roll tables, according to a [do] the [sciencey] [science] [thing] template. Players and GMs can use the in-game macro to come up with gems like “oscillate the positronic flux membrane” with a single click. However, figuring out how much buffer time you'll have for replicator margaritas still falls to you. Scopely's Game Board Written by Rosco McQueen Scopely, the publishers of Star Trek Fleet Command announced this week they have added two people to their board of directors: initial public offering adviser Marcie Vu and former Activision Blizzard president Coddy Johnson. Venturebeat reports that Vu is a former executive at Qatalyst and Morgan Stanley, where she was an adviser on IPOs for companies like Alibaba.com, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, and Zynga. Johnson was the No. 2 executive at Activision Blizzard, which has a market value of $74 billion. Walter Driver, the co-CEO at Scopely said in an interview “[a]s we think about building more player-centric views of our player experiences versus platform-centric views, I think that experience is really valuable. (Coddy Johnson) has operated at a tremendous scale. Very few people have had that kind of vantage point of leading such a large organization both in terms of people and revenue.”

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films and one of the films most widely considered to be the favourite film of fans and non-fans alike of the "Star Trek" motion picture franchise: "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" directed by Leonard Nimoy. The third part in an unofficial trilogy of films, the story of the film sees Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew of Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Scotty (James Doohan), Sulu (George Takei), Chekov (Walter Koenig), and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) returning home to Earth from a three month exile on the planet Vulcan to stand trial for the events of the previous film - most notably stealing the USS Enterprise NCC-1701, which lead to the ship's destruction, and taking possession of a Klingon Bird of Prey type starship. However, as a result of an approaching alien probe that threatens all life of Earth if a response cannot be found to answer the powerful transmission of the probe, and after a planet-wide distress signal is broadcast warning all approaching vessels to stear clear of Earth or face the same fate. Admiral Kirk and his crew aboard the Klingon Bird of Prey, the "HMS Bounty", after analysing the call of the probe, realise that the only lifeforms capable of responding to the alien probe are the now-extinct species of humpback whales - which leads Admiral Kirk and his crew to determine that the only solution available to them is to attempt to time-travel to the 20th Century to find some humpback whales so that they can be returned to the 23rd Century so that they may assist humanity in their time of need and desperation. The film also stars Catherine Hicks as Dr. Gillian Taylor, Mark Leonard as Sarek (Spock's father), and Jane Wyatt as Amanda Gryson (Spock's mother). The beautiful soundtrack of the film was composed by Leonard Rosenman. And the dedicated to the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger which broke up 73 seconds after takeoff on the morning of January 28th, 1986. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

This week on Priority One --- We trek out Star Trek: First Contact with director and star Jonathan Frakes, Bryan Fuller's Mirror Universe, Acquisition Rumors, and Legos! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online reveals the 2020 Summer Event Ship winner, celebrates the “Year of Klingon,” and helps with Zoom meeting fatigue. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: What do you think of Bryan Fuller's explanation of the Mirror Universe? CQ: Who would you rather take over ViacomCBS? Amazon? Netflix? Apple? AND CQ: What are your thoughts on the KDF revamp coming to Star Trek Online? What do you hope to see? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Frakes Watches “First Contact” With IGN We're leading with Jonathan Frakes again. We'd apologize if we thought it was necessary, but it's not. The man is a treasure. So what did the actor, director, and all-around entertaining Frakes do this time? He did a LIVE watch of “Star Trek: First Contact” with IGN, and he did not disappoint. Frakes joined IGN's “Watch From Home Theater” to stream the live-chat of the 1996 classic, and as usual, had some interesting insight and entertaining takes on the film. In regards to the rumor that Special Effects house Industrial Lights and Magic wanted to add the Millenium Falcon into the film, Frakes replied ”I like it and it's a rumor I will continue to spread.” Frakes also credited Ron Moore, Rick Berman and Brannon Braga's script for the movies success, sighting the comedic interludes ”And THAT is one of the keys to the success of this film, is those comic beats are peppered in, they're momentary, and then we restart the engine. I think that's one of the real tricks to Ron and Brannon's script that's not always heralded as important and yet vital in an action-adventure movie.” But Jonathan Frakes answered the real question that's been plaguing Star Trek fans for years - what's with the Riker-Chair-Maneuver? ”That started in 10-forward because the backs of the chairs in 10-forward were so low. It was easy. And then I thought ‘this is a really hot dog, EXPLETIVE thing to do, no one is going to let me do this.' And then nobody stopped me. It's such a cocky, unattractive, bad cowboy move” Bryan Fuller's Take on Mirror Universe It's been a long road, getting from there to here. All the way back in 2016, when we could go outside and give hugs to people, seasoned Star Trek writer Bryan Fuller was given the proverbial keys to the castle - he was put in charge of bringing Star Trek back to TV. After his departure in 2017, we learned a few things about his now-defunct vision, including the pitch that the series be an anthology. Fast Forward to this week, and we learn a bit more about Fuller's unfulfilled plans. Sitting down with Robert Burnett for his youtube show Robservations, Fuller shed light on his vision of the darker side of trek, more specifically the Mirror Universe. ”The thing that really fascinated me in sitting down and crafting the story for Discovery was just the human condition. And I thought that there are elements in the Mirror Universe that we have seen that have sort of boiled to the broadest ends of the spectrum and everything felt really binary. And what I really wanted to do in setting out is looking at the minutiae of simple decisions that have a cascade effect on our lives. So, it's not about gold lamé sashes and goatees versus no sash and clean-shaven. It is more about, like, we are at forks in the road every moment of our lives and we either go left or right.” Fuller elaborated, saying ”It wasn't necessarily the Mirror Universe we know from all of the other series. It was something that was closer to our timeline and experience, so you can still recognize the human being and go, ‘What did I do? How did that seem like a good decision for me in that moment and how do I continue with my life forward?' And everything was a sort of an extrapolation out on that. So, there were things that I wanted the Mirror Universe to function in a narrative exploration of like ‘Oh EXPLETIVE, if I just hadn't done that one thing, everything would be better,' as opposed to, ‘I don't recognize that person, I don't know who that person is, because they are a diametric opposite of who I am.” ViacomCBS For Sale? This next story requires Nancy Crater, M-113 creature levels of salt - a pinch won't do - so get ready for some mottling. Could Star Trek, and the newly re-integrated ViacomCBS, be on the market? Film Critic, Comic Book author, and Youtuber Grace Randolph thinks she may have the answers. In a tweet dated May 1st, Randolph said ”Okay here's some Friday tea for you. As we've been hearing, Apple MIGHT buy Disney - But also Netflix MIGHT buy Viacom (CBS / Paramount, etc). Super rumor stage, but that's what's being sipped in Hollywood right now...” Rumors of Apple purchasing Disney have been floating around for a couple of weeks now, though Nasdaq.com speculates the acquisition is unlikely. But what about Netflix purchasing ViacomCBS? Rumor site Boundingintocomics linked an article to financial website Seeking Alpha, which cited ViacomCBS as a “Prime Takeover Target”. Further, Grace Randolph -the tweeter from earlier in the story - posits on her youtube program, “Beyond The Trailer” that the acquisition would give Netflix access to ViacomCBS' library and franchises and ”This would make Netflix a Movie Studio Proper, where they could make their prestige films, and they would be Netflix OWNED, but they would not be Netflix branded”. In short, Netflix could release Paramount movies in theaters without upsetting Netflix subscribers. Some naysayers point to the obvious fact that Netflix is currently running a substantial debt, and could not float the estimated 5 BILLION dollar acquisition cost. But what about another streaming service, one owned by a billionaire trekkie with a walk-on part in “Star Trek: Beyond” - the Jeff Bezos lead Amazon Prime? Lego Star Trek Speaking of fun. Who doesn't like Legos? The Danish building block toy has inspired, entertained, and enlightened the lives of people across the globe for nearly forty years. And despite the fact that Star Trek has never been included in the Lego block-world, it doesn't mean fans can't bring it in themselves. That's exactly what Reddit user M-2-M did, using Lego's Free Digital Designer. Starting 3 weeks ago, M-2-M has created the cast of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, as well as sets from the first season of TNG in chronological order - starting with “Encounter at Farpoint” and currently ending at “Heart of Glory”. These are hugely fun, intricate, and creative and we recommend you follow the link to have a look at them all! Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover 2020 Summer Event Ship Contest Winner Just under 20,000 players voted in Star Trek Online's contest to choose the next Risian Summer Event ship, and the results of the voting have now been announced. In a pair of posts on May 1st, the official STO Twitter account declared Nick Dugid's design as the winner, taking nearly 38% of votes. The senior environment artist's ship design will now be fully developed by concept artist Hector Ortiz and handed over to the dev teams to realize the ship for 2020's Summer Event on Risa. Congratulations to Nick Duguid, and also to the other three game devs who contributed to the contest. Christian Griffith's design came in a close second with 32% of votes, while Jesse Heinig and Mike Fatum's designs took in 16% and 13% of votes respectively. If Nick's design wasn't your personal favorite, perhaps you'll find some solace in another STO account tweet declaring “You never know where these other designs might end up.” Welcome To The Year of Klingon We recently shared Thomas Marrone's surprise reveal of an updated Klingon Bird of Prey model, and now Cryptic have revealed that this year holds much more excitement for Klingon loving players. In fact, 2020 has been dubbed by the game as “The Year of Klingon”. A game news blog dated April 29th announced a new major, multipart Klingon focused storyline set in the game's current timeline of 2411. The blog acknowledged that the game's current Klingon arc is both well loved by players and at the same time lacking many recent technical improvements. Cryptic said, “we're spending time and resources to give these pieces of content visual and gameplay facelifts. Over the next twelve months (maybe more), you'll see new Klingon character models for some of our classic characters like J'Mpok, updated skins for the classic Klingon ships like the Bird of Prey, new environments and cutscenes to refresh this old but beloved content.” Like the recent Star Trek Discovery content releases, The Year of Klingon will be released in installments. To communicate their efforts and generate excitement over this time, there will be regular spotlights on the ongoing development. The first, tagged #StovokorSaturdays, will reveal pieces of updated content weekly on game social media accounts. One #StovokorSaturday has already gone live, providing a brief video of updated Klingon character textures like hairstyles and skin complexions. Other outlets to come are artist streams on the official Twitch account and weekly team interviews on the Ten Forward community stream. That brings us to our first community question for Star Trek Online: What are your thoughts on the KDF revamp coming to Star Trek Online? What do you hope to see? Join Your Meetings From The Bridge “Don't video call for the job you have, video call for the job you want.” So declared Ambassador Kael in another official blog post this week, where he shared 16 Zoom meeting backgrounds created from locations within the game. The backgrounds were all created and provided by player Primar13. The images include a wide selection of ship bridges, plus important locations like Starfleet Academy and the Klingon High Council chambers. If you want to join your next video conference from the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise, just follow the link in our show notes. EVENTS Protect Pahvo! Hiawatha in Star Trek: Discovery. This kit module provides both a passive mode and an activated mode. When passive, the module spawns one drone with limited capabilities that follows the character into combat. When activated, however, three drones will enter combat for a brief time and more effectively damage and disable foes.

And despite the fact that Star Trek has never been included in the Lego block-world, it doesn’t mean fans can’t bring it in themselves. That’s exactly what Reddit user M-2-M did, using Lego’s Free Digital Designer. Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover 2020 Summer Event Ship Contest Winner Just under 20,000 players voted in Star Trek Online’s contest to choose the next Risian Summer Event ship, and the results of the voting have now been announced. In a pair of posts on May 1st, the official STO Twitter account declared Nick Dugid’s design as the winner, taking nearly 38% of votes. The senior environment artist’s ship design will now be fully developed by concept artist Hector Ortiz and handed over to the dev teams to realize the ship for 2020’s Summer Event on Risa. Congratulations to Nick Duguid, and also to the other three game devs who contributed to the contest. Christian Griffith’s design came in a close second with 32% of votes, while Jesse Heinig and Mike Fatum’s designs took in 16% and 13% of votes respectively. If Nick’s design wasn’t your personal favorite, perhaps you’ll find some solace in another STO account tweet declaring “You never know where these other designs might end up.” Welcome To The Year of Klingon We recently shared Thomas Marrone’s surprise reveal of an updated Klingon Bird of Prey model, and now Cryptic have revealed that this year holds much more excitement for Klingon loving players. In fact, 2020 has been dubbed by the game as “The Year of Klingon”. A game news blog dated April 29th announced a new major, multipart Klingon focused storyline set in the game’s current timeline of 2411. The blog acknowledged that the game’s current Klingon arc is both well loved by players and at the same time lacking many recent technical improvements. Cryptic said, “we’re spending time and resources to give these pieces of content visual and gameplay facelifts. Over the next twelve months (maybe more), you’ll see new Klingon character models for some of our classic characters like J’Mpok, updated skins for the classic Klingon ships like the Bird of Prey, new environments and cutscenes to refresh this old but beloved content.” Like the recent Star Trek Discovery content releases, The Year of Klingon will be released in installments. Join Your Meetings From The Bridge “Don’t video call for the job you have, video call for the job you want.” So declared Ambassador Kael in another official blog post this week, where he shared 16 Zoom meeting backgrounds created from locations within the game. STO Honors Medical Workers This past Saturday, April 18th, Star Trek Online invited all players to show their gratitude to medical workers around the world. Players responded by the hundreds, cramming instances of Deep Space Nine’s upper promenade. Decked out in every Star Trek medical uniform you can imagine, and a few you probably can’t, players stood shoulder to shoulder to hold a torch for those risking their health to help the suffering. To see screenshots from many players who joined the demonstration, Trek out Star Trek Online’s Twitter account via the link in our show notes. Hector Ortiz draws the Summer Ships Over the past few weeks, four Star Trek Online development team members tested their skills at designing a Risian Science Vessel for the 2020 Summer Event. On April 15th, concept artist Hector Ortiz finally got his hands on those drawings. On a two hour live stream, which you can now view on STO’s YouTube channel, Hector turned those rough sketches into more polished concepts. While two hours may not be enough for even Hector to create four fully complete concept art drawings, the results were amazing. If you’re looking for something interesting to watch while you’re at home this week, Trek out the video link in our show notes. And keep your eyes on STO’s social media channels. When Hector has finished his concept drawings of all four ships, the final designs will be opened up for community voting. Ships of the Line: Akira On Tuesday, Ambassador Kael posted a news blog announcing both a new type of C-Store bundle and an updated ship model to launch it. A brand new model and material for the Akira-Class Heavy Escort will be the first ship offered in the new “Ships of the Line” bundle. The bundle, which will cost 6000 Zen, will contain the T6 Alita Heavy Strike Wing Escort, the T5 Armitage Heavy Strike Wing Escort, the T3 Thunderchild Heavy Escort Refit, and one Fleet Ship Module. The new look for the Akira-Class is the most detailed and screen-accurate look for the ship yet, bringing it closer to its appearance in the film Star Trek: First Contact. For a short time, from April 23rd to April 30th at 10am Pacific Time, the new Akira bundle will be 35% off in the C-Store. For those who already own one of these ship classes, the updated model is available freely in the Ship Customization screen. Thomas Marrone Talks with QueueTimes Thomas Marrone sat down recently with Eric Campbell from QueueTimes, the team that produces the Star Trek Adventures RPG show “Clear Skies”. For an hour and a half, Cryptic’s Lead Ship and UI Artist chatted about the game, his work, and the process of designing a brand new Galaxy-Class variant for “Clear Skies”. The interview is well worth a watch, so just follow the link. But towards the end of that stream, Thomas took a moment to tease STO players with the reveal of a brand new model for the beloved Klingon Bird of Prey. The new model looks far more detailed and accurate than any Bird of Prey currently in game, even including Klingon script of the ship’s name on the wing. If you’re in a hurry to see the new Bird of Prey, skip ahead in the video to the 1 hour 30 minute mark. EVENTS Starting on April 30th, PC players have an “Item Upgrade” weekend through May 4th. Introduction I recently watched an emotional and informative video, wherein media star Megyn Kelly interviewed 4 of her previous co-workers at Fox, 3 of whom, along with Kelly, had been sexually harassed at that network. And Kelly accused CBS, NBC, NPR, Hollywood, etc., of the same behavior. My most potent takeaway from the video was the terrible choice these women had to make, the choice between the shame of going along, saying “Yes” to the harassment for the sake of their incomes and careers, and the pain of saying “No”, knowing that no was tantamount to a deadend career, and likely loss of near-term income. My wife and I lived and worked in Silicon Valley until 2008 when we moved back to Colorado. California was a one-party state then, and is even more so now. And the much ballyhooed tolerance of that party does not extend to tolerance of different ideas. Even then, you could not take anti-currently embraced positions at work without risking ostracism and fearing that you were creating a career cul-de-sac. That was true with both the boss and the lunch room crowd. If you had deeply held moral and values-based positions on key topics that differed with the group, you needed to either shut up, or pretend to agree. Feel the shame of compromising yourself, or suffer the pain of paying for them. That is the subject of today’s 10-minute episode. Continuing On the eve of the Presidential election in 2016, the widely held view was that Hillary Clinton was going to win walking away. After all, deplorables were at the core of Trump’s support, and there could not be that many of them. Could there? Question. What happened? What really happened in 2016? Answer. Nothing. And we’ll get to that. If you want a reminder of how stunned, horrified, actually, the mainstream media and the candidate herself were after a decisive electoral victory by then President-elect Trump, go look at some post election videos. They show far more than deep disappointment with a consequential loss; the videos of newscasters and the candidate reflected the revelation of a tragedy of monstrous proportions, a tragedy that was completely and totally unexpected. The oft-shown video of a young woman desperately screaming “Nooooooooooooo!” at the news sums up the losing reaction. After a time of weeping and a great gnashing of teeth, those on the losing side rallied to come up with an explanation for the unexplainable. A great number of Trump voters were, well, sexists, racist, xenophobes and Islamophobes. There were less educated, pissed-off, and, in their anger and ignorance, bought into Trump’s callously calculated message. But Will, how does that explain the wildly inaccurate polls? The easy answer is that those polled were so embarrassed at their known-to-be-shameful reasons for voting Republican, that they were ashamed to reveal that part of themselves to pollsters, even though the pollsters were total strangers, and often those being polled were told that their responses would be anonymous. That explanation is pure nonsense. The real reason is that most of the media had told them, repeatedly and in no uncertain terms, that they should be ashamed of voting Republican. “Voldemort Votes Republican”, or so claimed a bumper sticker I saw at the San Francisco airport in 2016. These voters were in no way ashamed of voting for their preferred candidate, but many of them did not want to take a chance of being judged even by an anonymous pollster, so they took the easy way out and lied. A Klingon Bird of Prey (greeting to Star Trek fans) cannot fire cloaked; it must uncloak before it can fire its weapons. In the same way, the Republican voters would have needed to uncloak before they could respond honestly, so many remained cloaked. And the secret ballot allowed them to remain cloaked. There might have been some slight shame in lying to the pollsters, but it seemed better than the perceived pain of being seen as, well, as deplorable.

Hosted by Remi Lavictoire, Ian Fults an Jonathan Colbon Podcast length: 56:14 This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Ian, Jonathan dig deeper into "Star Trek III: The Search from Spock" from 1984 and directed by Leonard Nimoy. The PositiveThis third installment of the original Star Trek franchise is a direct continuation of the events in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and as Ian says, it's the 'Empire Strikes Back' of the Star Trek series. 'Spock' is one of the odd numbered movies, which according to the curse, tends to make it one of the lesser movies in the overall series. Jonathan considers this to be the best of the worst odd numbered movies. Great music, some solid acting from Deforest Kelly and William Shatner make this one better than most people give it credit for. The NegativeIt was always going to be hard for 'Spock' to follow the popularity critical praise of 'Khan', Rem considers this to be something of a part 2 of the 'Khan'. Jonathan found the characterization of Commander Kruge seemed one dimensional and a poor successor to Khan. The VerdictThis will be essential viewing if you're a fan of the franchise, and it's the middle tier of the 2, 3, 4 collection. Don't let the odd number curse hold you back, it's a good watch as part of the original Star Trek movie series. Get more detail on Star Trek III on IMDB Listener Feedback John Sheehylways going to be tough to follow up Wrath of Khan, remember feeling yeah this is movie is ok but it was the start of the decline in the Star Trek series until the brilliant Undiscovered Country.Christopher Lloyd for me introduced the more rounded and thoughtful Klingons that became the model particularly in TNG/DS9 Lisa LyonsThe follow on from the best film of the franchise! And the only film to make us cry. The loss of the Enterprise, and seeing the crew falling apart without Spock? Very heart rending. However, the biggest moment for me was that darkened room, a single figure shrouded by shadow and what sounded like Spock's voice from the darkness! BOOM! DeForrest Kelly nailed it!!! Sent shivers down my spine! "That green-blooded son of a bitch! He did it to me on purpose!" Ken BizarroI love Trek III. It has an adventure vibe to it much like "Wrath," with the added element of "Kirk gone rogue" in there. The late James Horner's soaring music, especially in my very favorite sequence, "Stealing the Enterprise" ranges from exciting to heartbreaking. Giving the fancy new Excelsior a pompous captain (James Sikking) was genius, and the movie is visually stunning too- the shot of the Enterprise pulling away with Excelsior coming around the space dock in the background- made my heart race. If I'm not mistaken, this film also introduced the Klingon Bird of Prey, one of the best spaceship designs to come out of the film franchise. Balbinder BhatiaWhen I first saw this film, years ago I have to admit I didn't like it at all. It didn't have the dramatic flair of The Wrath of Khan or the fun of The Voyage home that followed it. Also Robin Curtis replacing Kirstie Alley as Saavik did not sit well with me. However as I have gotten older and wiser I have come to appreciate this film more. It has a lot to offer towards the Star Trek cannon. For instance we finally get to see the new Klingons in more detail than in their debut in the Motion Picture. Also there are 2 important onscreen deaths firstly that of David, which will effect Kirks motivations from then on and secondly that of the Enterprise, the ship that has carried us through from the start of Star Trek. I should also mention that Deforest Kelly gives his best performance in a Star Trek film here (in my humble opinion) There are still lots about the film I don't like, again Robin Curtis (I'm not picking on her, I'm sure she is a lovely person, but the change irks me), also the character of Saavik helping the now very young Spock going through Pon Farr is a bit strange. Brian CampbellA mediocre entry at best. To spend almost an entire movie "resurrecting" a character was a little tedious. At the theater, I was kind of bummed that Lt. Saavik had been swapped out for a less crush-worthy actress. Lessly crusher, if you will. The movies saving grace, at least for me, was Jim from Taxi. A little perplexing, however, that such a war-like species as the Klingons could ever develop warp speed. Michael SimshauserThe middle film of the unofficial trilogy (II,III,IV) but is the flipside to Star Trek II, turning Spock's last words "The needs of the many outweighs the needs of the one" on its head, that their friend was so important that they would all risk their careers, their lives and ultimately their ship. But again we learn that some will end up paying the ultimate price. Best scenes for me were the Kirk's response after officially being told not to go to Genesis (The answer is no, I am therefore going anyway.) and Kirk's reaction to his son's brutal murder and McCoy's line after Kirk and the crew watch the Enterprise that they had been on for so long and survived so much burn up in the atmosphere of Genesis. Maybe not as essential viewing as II,IV or VI but still able to be viewed on its own or as a part of the unofficial trilogy of II,III and IV. Ton de WitteGood movie, liked Christopher Lloyd. It was of course inevitable that Spock returned without the trinity having a discussion Star Trek would be less fun. All there is left to say is, impressive they can make planets Mike CrateI've never really liked Star Trek III even though I've seen and heard many warm words for the movie but it was such a let down after Wrath of Khan and I can never judge it as a standalone. I've watched ST: V more than this movie which speaks volumes. The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast is partially funded by Patreon. You can help make the Sci-Fi Movie Podcast even better by becoming a support. USS Prometheus and Xindi Insectoid ship set course for your desk For starship lovers, EagleMoss's Official Starships Collection has been like a tall glass of tranya—sweet and refreshing. Having run through most of the lead ships—like the Enterprises and Voyager—as well as the most common enemy vessels like the Klingon Bird-of-Prey and the Romulan War Bird, the collection is now turning its eyes on the obscure. Issue 24 will bring fans the very unique Xindi Insectoid Ship from Enterprise's third season, while Issue 25 will deliver the USS Prometheus and tri-vector assault mode, seen in the Voyager episode "Message In a Bottle." (No word on whether a miniature Andy Dick is included.) A similar idea was tried in the 1970s without success. But if anyone in the comic world could pull it off, it is John Byrne. The success of the first volume led to an ongoing series with IDW, and the result has been rich, engaging stories and unique visuals. Now, in his forums, Byrne drops hints at the future direction of New Visions. Turnabout Intruder. After 80 produced episodes, Star Trek bid us farewell on June 3, 1969, with one of the most bizarre stories of the series. It was a finale filled with moaning, out-of-character acting, and a fab bass line. With one last shot, there's a bit of everything for TOS fans in what's more a clearing house for William Shatner's acting than an actual finale. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by our Managing Editor Charlynn Schmiedt, TOS Editor Drew Stewart, and Jennie Zell of Dork Trek, Playing Doctor, and Broadcast to explore “Turnabout Intruder” and why it's a wicked fun romp that leaves you feeling like Gene Roddenberry gave you the Winnie. In news we discuss Destination Star Trek London and a special con exclusive from Star Trek The Official Magazine, Haynes Publishing's Klingon Bird-of-Prey owner's manual, a possible Paramount theme park in England, the 2013 Star Trek wall calendars, StarTrek.com's poll of the best series opening credits, and we reveal the hidden message that can be found in the Deep Space Nine theme music.
