The Munsons are thrilled to welcome back guest Munson Matti Groll to explore one of the stranger career paths we've covered: Michael Chiklis. A fellow Boston University Terrier, Matti joins us as we trace Chiklis from a disastrous first movie that nearly ended his career before it began to becoming one of the actors who helped redefine what television could look like in the early 2000s. Along the way, we unpack the incredible story behind Wired, the infamous John Belushi biopic that earned the wrath of Belushi's friends, a literal curse from Dan Aykroyd, and years of career fallout for a young actor who was mostly just happy to no longer be waiting tables. From there, we dive into the television work that ultimately made Chiklis a star, including The Commish and his groundbreaking Emmy-winning performance as Vic Mackey on The Shield. We debate just how important The Shield was in opening the door for prestige dramas on basic cable, discover that Stan Lee considered Chiklis's portrayal of The Thing his favorite live-action Marvel performance, and somehow find ourselves defending—or absolutely refusing to defend—the 2005 Fantastic Four. Matti also gets the considerably better assignment of revisiting Spirited Away, whose addition to Chiklis's filmography unexpectedly rescues him from dead last in Case's box-office rankings. The back half brings everything from Eagle Eye, Parker, and the wildly divisive When the Game Stands Tall to the MoviePass-produced crime thriller 10 Minutes Gone, complete with a fascinating behind-the-scenes Bruce Willis story. But the real late-career revelation may be Chiklis as Red Auerbach in Winning Time, a performance strong enough to have us wondering whether a full-blown “Chiklissance” could still be ahead. Is Michael Chiklis an underrated television powerhouse trapped inside an underwhelming movie résumé, or does the uneven filmography tell us something bigger about his limitations as a performer? How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.

And everyone else is old! This week, Justin and Steve put on their dark shades and sunglasses to cover 1998's BLUES BROTHERS 2000. But it wouldn't be a true Blues Brothers episode unless we put the band back together, so this week the boys are joined by musician (and Steve's actual former bandmate) Stephen Weinheimer. The boys go on a mission from Quigley to try their best to understand one of the most misguided and unnecessary sequels of all time-a love letter to boomer culture that is also somehow supposed to appeal to the kids of the late '90s. The results are more awkward than a 50-year-old Dan Aykroyd trying to dance.Check out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocksCheck out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com

Released on December 6, 1985, Spies Like Us is a Cold War buddy comedy directed by John Landis, the filmmaker behind Animal House, The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London and Trading Places. Chevy Chase plays Emmett Fitz-Hume, a charming but lazy State Department employee who relies more on confidence and family connections than actual ability. Dan Aykroyd plays Austin Millbarge, an intelligent but overlooked Pentagon technician who dreams of becoming a field agent. After both men cheat during a government examination, they are unexpectedly promoted, rushed through a completely ridiculous training program and sent on a secret overseas mission. Fitz-Hume and Millbarge believe they've finally become real spies. What they don't know is that they are expendable decoys, selected to draw enemy attention away from a more capable team. The assignment sends them through Pakistan and into Soviet territory, where a mission they barely understand places a nuclear missile—and possibly the entire world—in their hands. It's part spy spoof, part buddy comedy and part satire of Cold War paranoia. Naruto's live-action movie has real momentum: director Destin Daniel Cretton is attached, creator Masashi Kishimoto has given his blessing, and a global casting search is underway for Team 7. The Nightmare on Elm Street reboot lands at Paramount with the Wes Craven estate involved and the team behind Barbarian and Weapons attached, and the premise holds up better in a modern setting than most 80s slashers. The new Ghostbusters animated series is set in 1994 New York, is canon, and has Dan Aykroyd producing, with Jack Quaid in the voice cast. DC greenlighting a Mr. Terrific series after Supergirl's soft box office signals James Gunn is prioritizing long-term world building over chasing safe bets. The Crystal Lake teaser centers Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, raising the question of whether a Friday the 13th story can work with Jason mostly offscreen. Quotes "You go to sleep, Freddy's in your mind. Nightmare on Elm Street is one of those stories that actually could work today just fine." "If I were a Naruto fan, these are all the stars lining up that I'd want to line up." "I think this is going to be the Clone Wars of Ghostbusters." "If you were to cut every part of Lobo out of this movie, you would not feel his absence in the slightest. That being said, Jason Momoa as Lobo nailed it." "Everything that's ever mentioned or anything that's put into his bag, you can assume will be used." Call to Action Enjoyed the episode? All good things must come to and end as this is the Season 8 finale.  But, we're going out with a bang as we take a close look at the (kind of?) classic sitcom, Bosom Buddies.  Was it a little too "out there" and farcical? Yes.  Did it die a quick death? Yes.  Did it launch some epic careers?  You bet!  Tom Hanks, Peter Scolari, Wendie Jo Sperber, Holland Taylor, and Telma Hopkins to name a few.  Oh yeah, and Dan Aykroyd's wife, Donna Dixon.  So, sit back, put on your favorite blouse and enjoy the pilot episode of Bosom Buddies.

To this day - twenty-two years later - you can still walk into a room anywhere in the civilized world and shout “Who ya gonna call?” and get an emphatic hollaback of “GHOSTBUSTERS!” Is there more that needs to be said? Yes, there is. About three hours worth if you're Paul, Javi, and the preternatural Producer Brad! For a franchise that has been rehashed, rebooted, re-animated, and spun-off so many times, the original still holds the power to provoke laughter, surprise, wonder, and, occasionally, a low grumble of “dude, that Venkman's kind of a lech." It was the eighties, and if you were an alum of SNL, times were good, especially for Dan Aykroyd, who, along with Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman turned his longtime obsession with the the paranormal into a humongously budgeted comedic spectacle on the scale of the epic blockbusters of Lucas and Spielberg. Anchored by a master class in snark presented by Bill Murray, with Ramis, Aykroyd, and everyman extraordinaire Ernie Hudson rounding out the titular team, the supernaturally amazing cast includes Sigourney “The Most Exhalted Queen of the Universe” Weaver, Annie “the unsung MVP of the Ghostbusters” Potts, and the ever lovable Rick Moranis as the world's most indefatigable accountant. Let's face it folks, there's two epochs in history, before “he slimed me” and after “he slimed me," and the Multiplex Overthruster crew has seen them both. So dust off your Tobin's Spirit Guide, power up your PK meter, and bust out the neutrona wands, because many Zuuls and Shubs are about to find out what it's like to be roasted on the depths of the Sloar, and there's only one call to make - GHOSTBUSTERS!Show Notes:US Theatrical release date: June 8, 1984US Weekend Box Office June 8, 1984US 1984 Top Grossing MoviesAFI Catalog Entry for GhostbustersRoger Ebert's Ghostbusters ReviewNYT/Janet Maslin Ghostbuster ReviewA look at Dan Akroyd's original script for ‘Ghostbusters'Dan Aykroyd Explains Spooky Way He Came Up With Original 'Ghostbusters' IdeaTeenage Sigourney Weaver Seen Enjoying Beatles' Hollywood Bowl Concert in ‘Eight Days a Week' DocCasper's creators aren't so friendly - UPI ArchivesPatrick NagelTheme music by Mike McGuillAdditional voicework by Russell BentleySummer of '84 voiced by Colby ElliottFollow us!InstagramBlueskyemail: Multiplexoverthruster@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. In this episode of the show our trip through buddy cop movies of the 80s continues with the 1987 Dragnet. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how this movie did not after all originate as a potential vehicle for Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi even though it looks like could have, how it spoofs the police procedural genre in ways that is closer to Zucker-Zucker-Abrahams movies than to SNL, and whether Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd shared any meaningful chemistry. In this episode of the show our trip through John Landis comedies of the 1980s continues with Trading Places. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about this movie as less an example of the 80s-native edgy sketch comedy but rather an evocation of the spirit of classic screwball comedies in the style of Frank Capra and Howard Hawks. We talk about the chemistry between Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy, Hollywood slowly waking up to a possibility that a black star could carry a movie (but still only in an ensemble or a buddy setup) and where John Landis and his edge fits in all this. And we can only begin this journey by donning our G-Men suits and sunglasses to talk about The Blues Brothers. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about the long and eventful history of how this movie came together, how the Blues Brothers phenomenon reinvigorated the careers of blues and soul icons, how it nearly bankrupted the studio thanks to the combination of Dan Aykroyd's propensity to write stream-of-consciousness epics posing as scripts and John Landis's desire to go big instead of going home and how this first SNL movie set the course for many others to follow. We also talk about the nexus of sketch comedy, The Blues Brothers as a piece of counterculture and one of the great American musicals and an ode to a great friendship between Aykroyd and Belushi. Tune in and enjoy!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsHead over to uncutgemspodcast.com to find all of our archival episodes and more!Follow us on Twitter (@UncutGemsPod), IG (@UncutGemsPod) and Facebook (@UncutGemsPod)Buy us a coffee over at Ko-Fi.com (ko-fi.com/uncutgemspod)Subscribe to our Patreon! (patreon.com/uncutgemspod

They say there ain't no cure for the summertime blues, but we here at F2F disagree. So allow Trev & Chris to make a house-call, as we ring in a brand new series - "JUNE is What the Doctor Ordered," taking a look at three doctor-themed (sorta) movies. First up, the 1983 oddity Doctor Detroit, perhaps most remembered as SNL legend Dan Aykroyd's first (and last?) solo starring role in a movie. Aykroyd plays a nebbish college professor forced to pose as a tough-talking pimp in order to protect four beautiful sex workers from the wrath of an evil crime boss named "Mom." And if that premise already sounds pretty out-there to you, well, we haven't even said anything about the costuming, voice, and mannerism choices Aykroyd makes in regards to his "Doctor Detroit" persona. Why exactly did a movie starring a beloved comic icon, released so close to hits like Trading Places and Ghostbusters, not connect with audiences? We're here to diagnose what might have gone wrong. Answer our 2026 Audience Census! "I wasn't an Imagineer because of the dollar. It's because I wanted to do something marvelous for people to enjoy." Captain Eo. Ghostbusters. Men in Black. Team America. Star Tours. The Muppet Movie. If you've ever fallen in love with puppeted characters that felt impossibly alive, there's a good chance Terri Hardin worked on them. A master puppeteer, creature builder, and performer, Terri has spent decades blurring the line between imagination and reality, helping bring some of the most iconic characters in film, television, and the Disney Parks to life. Thanks to the success and beloved characters of Jim Henson, puppets and fantastical characters were having a huge moment in the 80s and 90s. Studios depended on practical effects and humans to create and bring to life characters such as Stay Puft, the giant Marshmallow Man and Zuul, the Temple Dog in Ghostbusters, both of which Terri helped animate. Terri has such an impressive list of productions she's worked on that her bio below is a 22 page document full of references to beloved films and characters. We've also linked to some videos of her work below in the Resources section. Terri also worked as a sculptor and Imagineer at Walt Disney for many years. She is brimming with incredible stories about all the people she's worked with including Michael Jackson, Dan Aykroyd and Jim Henson, and Michael Eisner. Terri talks to us about how she prepared herself so that when any opportunity came, she was ready. I especially loved her story about how she created the Dragon's Lair attraction at Disneyland Paris. Terri is an absolutely remarkable character herself, and she had both me and David laughing through the entire interview. Beneath it all, Terry is a passionate artist who breathes life into all her creations. Whether you're a film buff, a Disney fan, a maker, or just someone who loves a good behind-the-scenes story, this conversation pulls back the curtain on puppetry as a craft. You'll never look at puppetry the same way again.   Full Show Notes     Episode Sponsors We are immensely grateful to our sponsors this season: REA Patreon Backers, PG's Playhouse, Buzzshot, and the Reality Escape Convention.
