The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Happy Thursday Troublemakers. Today we are talking about the longest permitting process ever and why it needs to change if EV Automakers will be able to keep up. We also talk about the premium price that is about to come with Netflix new ad service, as well as a fact-checked $30k EV battery replacement. Inventory shortage easing as new vehicles sales for Kia and Hyundai as they see their first YOY growth since Summer of 2021Kia, with the lowest day's supply of vehicles, according to Cox Automotive data, said it set an August record with 66,089 deliveries, signaling the company's lineup continues to churn at a high rate.S&P Global Mobility last week reduced its forecast for U.S. auto sales in 2022 to 14.1 million, from 14.6 million as recently as July.August marked the 10th consecutive month that retail inventory closed below 900,000 units, J.D. Power and LMC Automotive said.August was the fourth consecutive month with incentives below $1,000.An extra selling day (removing Sundays) may have been a contributing factor to the growth.Ford and Rivian separately petitioned the US Dept of the Interior to speed up the permitting process for EV minerals essential for domestic battery productionThe letters urge the Department to restrict the permitting process to no longer than three years. The current process can take as much as ten"Today's lengthy, costly and inefficient permitting process makes it difficult for American businesses to invest in the extraction and processing of critical minerals in the United States," Chris Smith, Ford's chief government affairs officer, said in a letter to the department.”Smith continues, “"In contrast, Canada and Australia have adopted mineral permitting policies that enable producers to complete the process in two to three years, while maintaining stringent environmental standards.”Requested use of public funds for geo mapping and otherwise identifying mineral deposits across the US was also mentionedA $30k Dealership quote for a battery replacement circulating via a FB post on a 2012 Chevy volt was fact-checked by USA Today…and its realThe post reads ““A Chevy Volt, with just 70,000 miles, needed a new battery and some coolant.. That'll be $30,000 dollars please!”The price was confirmed by Gary Herrmann, the Service Director of Roger Dean Chevrolet in Cape Coral, Florida as he explained the battery is out of warranty, discontinued by GM, and has to be obtained from a third part supplierAverage battery replacement in an EV is around $6300 with others such as the Ford Mach E costing as much as $20kOriginal cost of a 2012 Volt started at $39,145Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/Rock with us LIVE at ASOTU CON! STB✨ https://t.me/stbstock11 Elon Musk, chief executive of electric car maker Tesla (Tesla), pointed out today that China is a world leader in renewable energy power generation and electric vehicles. But He Xiaopeng, chairman of Chinese electric car maker Xiaopeng Motors, responded that China still needs 10 years of hard work. Elon Musk tweeted, "It seems that few people realize that China is leading the world in renewable energy generation and electric vehicles. No matter how you look at China, this is true." He Xiaopeng then retweeted this Weibo saying that he does not understand renewable energy power generation, and China is only "standing in the forefront of the world" in the field of electric vehicles. In order to "lead the world", in addition to leading in technology and products, more importantly, leading in the global market and achieving multi-win business, these will require at least 10 years of hard work. Another netizen responded under Musk's post, "Isn't the world's leading position because of Tesla's factory in China?" Other netizens pointed out that "you are the long ball of the earth, what you said is correct" and "OK, let's buy a domestic tram." Musk has praised China several times recently, and has been called "the owner of the 'Kwa Kua Group'" by Chinese netizens. He once said that "WeChat is powerful and can basically do anything", and he also praised Chinese laborers for their hard work and perseverance, "always Work overtime until midnight.” On the other hand, Americans always “flash when they can” about work. According to foreign reports, Tesla's busiest factory and "major export center" are located in Shanghai. According to an assessment by LMC Automotive, an auto market research organization, Tesla's sales in China will increase by 226% in 2021 to 473,600 units, accounting for about half of the 935,222 units delivered globally. Last week, Ford Credit increased its purchase offer on outstanding debt securities to $3 billion as the industry forecasts declining vehicle sales in June, while interest rates rise and consumer sentiment and confidence decline. New-vehicle sales are projected to slump year over year in June, with the retail seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) falling 2.3 million units to 11.3 million, according to a joint forecast from JD Power and LMC Automotive. That's still an improvement from May's figure of 10.9 million units, however, according to the forecast.
Show #1454 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. RIVIAN WINS $1.5 BILLION IN STATE INCENTIVES FOR GEORGIA PLANT - $1.5 billion in state and local incentives to build a massive plant near Atlanta, bolstering the company's production efforts despite local resistance to the project. - the biggest in Georgia history, consists of tax credits, abatements and subsidies like site preparation and job training support from the state, according to a statement by the Georgia Department of Economic Development on Monday. - Rivian will get $476 million in statutory tax credits if it fulfills its promise to create a total of 7,500 jobs by the end of 2028. If it doesn't, there are clawbacks to protect the taxpayer, said Pat Wilson, Georgia's commissioner of economic development. Georgia is putting in another $288 million in discretionary spending in the form of site preparation and job training programs. Tax abatements from the four counties hosting the plant make up the rest of the package -- about $700 million over 25 years. - Rivian's investment would be the biggest economic development project in Georgia since at least World War II. - Rivian has pledged to create more than 7,500 jobs, with the eventual goal of producing 450,000 vehicles annually at the site. Rivian will pay workers an average annual wage of $56,000, and the project will create nearly 8,000 indirect jobs, according to the state. If not Russia, we will be reliant on autocratic regimes such as Saudi Arabia or Iran unless we drastically cut our oil consumption. - Julia Poliscanova is senior director for vehicles and e-mobility at Transport & Environment. - Some claim that ramping up electrification in the 2020s is not possible because there are not enough metals such as lithium available to build the lithium-ion batteries that propel them. A new T&E report, out today, shows that wrong political priorities, not raw material shortages, are the problem. - The maximum volumes of battery quality nickel (nickel sulfate) and lithium (both hydroxide and carbonate) expected to be mined and refined globally until 2025 are enough to produce 14 million electric cars already next year. - This is 55 percent more than the amount of EVs forecast by LMC Automotive to be sold globally in 2023. - Even if the raw materials market becomes tighter by 2025, 21 million battery electric cars can be produced in that year, still almost 50 percent more than market forecasts. - This shows that the electric car market is not constrained by the supply of raw materials - Rather, it is the European car CO2 regulation that dictates how many EVs automakers make. - China and its companies are in a race to secure global lithium assets and expand battery production at home and abroad. Meanwhile the U.S. has invoked the Defense Production Act to boost the supply of critical raw materials. - Instead, Europe is flying to Qatar and Iran and is using its diplomatic muscle to secure oil and gas. From post-pandemic manufacturing restart planning and worker safety measures, to legal issues and supply chain disruptions, Automotive Insiders is your source of timely and relevant content. Host Bonnie D. Graham welcomes back Jeff Schuster, President, Americas Operations and Global Vehicle Forecasts at LMC Automotive. Jeff revisits and updates his May 2025 assessment of the automotive market environment, electrification and other trends, and outlook for the US and global automotive industries. In May, Jeff expected LV sales to improve by 13% to 88 million units in 2021. He has since downscaled that figure to 11% growth and 86.7 million units this year, due to ongoing recovery disruptions and risks. From his earlier projection that BEVs would expand from 1.5% of sales in 2020 to 6% by 2024, Jeff now expects that figure to reach nearly 10% by 2024. He continues to see increased workplace flexibility and new technology coming into vehicles attracting workforce talent that hadn't previously considered automotive. The Silver Institute recently released a report on the burgeoning use of silver in vehicles and particularly electric vehicles (EV’s). From the report: “While highly variable across different vehicle types and markets, our research suggests a range of 0.5 to 0.9 ounces (15-28 grams) is consumed in one internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, with higher loadings estimated for hybrid and then electric cars. Even so this may sound extremely modest, but it is worth noting that in 2021 global light vehicle (LV) production is expected to be around 85m units (source: LMC Automotive). (While this report focuses on LVs, it is important to acknowledge the use of silver components in both motorcycles and heavy duty vehicles, although in each segment silver loadings will be far lower than in LVs.) This in turn suggests that silver auto demand this year will be in the region of 61Moz (1,900t). To offer some perspective, this compares with the forecast 98Moz (3,000t) of silver that Metals Focus expects to be consumed in the photovoltaic industry in 2021”
Jeff Schuster of auto forecaster LMC Automotive says restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19 will likely hurt December sales while inventory woes could linger into the first quarter. But, with a vaccine on the way, he says there's hope for the spring selling season.
LMC Automotive's Jeff Schuster says the firm is forecasting 15.7 million U.S. light-vehicle sales next year and fewer pandemic-related disruptions. He also believes the used-vehicle market will remain a key part of the industry's rebound.

Qualified buyers won’t have to make any payments for 120 days." according to Electrek: "While Electrek confirmed with GM that the 0% financing is for 72 months, it could be negotiable. JD Power wrote that the financing could be extended to 84 months. It also mentioned that the zero-interest deal for a 2020 Bolt EV included no money down, no security deposit, and no payment the first month." https://electrek.co/2020/04/14/gm-offers-chevy-bolt-ev-with-4750-discount-in-april-no-payments-for-4-months/ 2021 MUSTANG MACH-E MIGHT BE MORE POWERFUL THAN FORD THOUGHT "The folks over at the Mach-E Forum just came up with an interesting new set of specifications for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford's promising new battery-electric performance car. Interesting as in more powerful, across the board, than the specs Ford originally offered months ago when the car was revealed. Those specs were listed, and are still listed, as "targeted" numbers, and it seems Ford has managed to outperform its expectations. " says Autoblog: "The 2021 Mach-E specs on Ford's dealer training site (obtained from our dealer source) are now showing an increase in horsepower, torque and kW output specs for all Mach-E trims and models!" AWD Extended Range: Old: 332 horsepower, 417 lb-ft, 248 kilowatts. New: 346 horsepower, 428 lb-ft , 258 kilowatts" https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/14/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-specifications-more-horsepower-torque/ FORD FILES TRADEMARK FOR FASTOR CHARGE "Ford has filed a trademark for Fastor Charge. The trademark is connected to a fast-charging network similar to Tesla Superchargers." says InsideEVs: "There's nothing in the filing indicating that it's specifically related to fast-charging other than the Fastor Charge name. We should point out that this was filed in 2018 and remains active." The MachEClub says: "Although Ford has partnered with Electrify America, IONITY, and Electrify Canada for the rollout of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford may be planning to build a fast-charging network of its own, perhaps to bring Level 3 charging capabilities to Ford and Lincoln dealerships or areas that will not be served by its existing charging partners." TESLA'S 250-KW SUPERCHARGER ONLY SAVED US 2 MINUTES VS. A 150-KW CHARGER "Tesla claims that its new V3 Superchargers support peak charging rates of up to 250 kW, which would equate to replenishing 1000 miles of range per hour. We didn't quite hit those numbers when we took our long-term 2019 Model 3 Long Range to a newly opened 250-kW Supercharger in Michigan City, Indiana, where we we saw a peak of 201 kW and around 810 miles per hour of charge." says Car & Driver: "the 250-kW charger only beats the lesser one in the range between about 10 percent and 50 percent state of charge, where all of the two-minute gain we saw over the entire charge was realized. Above that, the two closely follow the same path as the power necessarily tapers off as the battery level increases." LOTUS EVIJA CONFIGURATOR UTILIZES GAMING SOFTWARE AND POWERFUL GRAPHICS "The Lotus Evija is Britain’s first-ever all-electric hypercar. And to give potential buyers a taste of what’s to come, Lotus gave us a sneak peek of the Evija’s hi-tech configurator powered by advanced gaming software and crisp graphics. Least to say, this Lotus Evija configurator is among the best we’ve seen for a production car, and it’s one of the most innovative ways to spec your $2.1-million hypercar." says Slash Gear: "Lotus came up with a special configurator that reminds us of our favorite racing games like Gran Turismo and Forza. buyers can view high-definition renderings of the Evija. Using a special imaging technique called ‘ray-tracing’, potential customers can place the vehicle into multiple destinations and environments around the world. According to Lotus, this allows buyers to see how the vehicle looks when exposed to localized sunlight. When the customization process is complete, Lotus will create a personalized 360-degree fly-through video of the car. And since no Evijas are built the same, the film is exclusive to each customer. Also, Lotus will send buyers a ‘unique gift’ at regular intervals during the build process." https://www.slashgear.com/lotus-evija-configurator-utilizes-gaming-software-and-powerful-graphics-16616994/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK How can the EV industry help people get into driving electric cars as soon as this is all over? The financing round was led by the fund company T. Rowe Price, Blackrock and included previous investors, Amazon and Ford." reports electrive.com: "Amazon already added a $700 million financing round in February 2019, Ford invested $500 million in April and has since been planning further collaborations with the start-up. In September, Cox Automotive had invested another $350 million – but the fourth round in December was the largest of the year. Amazon and Ford, have increased their involvement in Rivian – but the amount of their involvement has not been revealed." https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/06/rivian-collects-1-3-billion-in-financing/ AMAZON-BACKED RIVIAN WILL INTEGRATE ALEXA INTO ITS ELECTRIC PICKUP AND SUV "Rivian will integrate Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa into the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, the company’s first electric vehicles that are set to debut at the end of the year." says TechCrunch: "Rivian said Monday it also plans to extend the Alexa integration to 100,000 electric delivery trucks that Amazon has ordered from the automaker. The electric vans are expected to start delivering packages to customers in 2021. The integration into the R1T and R1S will give owners access to standard Alexa features, such as playing music, placing calls and navigation, as well as the ability to control the climate, open and close the trunk and other vehicle features. For instance, owners will be able to remotely tap into the camera embedded in Rivian’s pickup truck from Amazon screen-based services like Echo Show and Fire TV to check on whatever gear is stashed there." https://techcrunch.com/2020/01/06/amazon-backed-rivian-will-integrate-alexa-into-its-electric-pickup-and-suv/ WHAT AUTOMAKERS ARE SHOWING AT CES "as the auto industry grapples with technology-fueled disruption from electrification, autonomous driving and upstart business models, CES is becoming the venue of choice for brands to prove to consumers, and each other, that they are embracing the future of mobility." writes Automotive News Europe: "BMW will tease an interior concept for its i3 EV. Fisker will debut the Ocean all-electric crossover, powered by an 80-kWh lithium ion battery pack and with an expected range of up to 300 miles. Ford will show its 2021 Mustang Mach-E crossover. The forecast takes into account Tesla’s history of production delays, potential supply-chain constraints and the complexity of manufacturing high-quality cars at scale, LMC Automotive said. Tesla, a pioneer in electric cars, probably will have an edge for the next one-to-two years before competition starts catching up, said David Whiston, an analyst at Morningstar Inc. in Chicago." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-06/musk-plans-to-come-to-shanghai-for-debut-of-made-in-china-tesla And from Electrek: "Tesla always said that they plan to produce both the Model 3 and Model Y at Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, but they never confirmed a timeline for Model Y. Model Y is supposed to go into production in Fremont for the US market in the next few months. It was rumored that production in Shanghai could be not too far behind, and now Tesla is expected to lay out a clear plan to bring the vehicle in production in the country. Tesla is talking about expanding the already giant factory in order to produce the Model Y at the plant." https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/06/tesl-model-y-program-china-model-3-delivery-event-elon-musk/# TESLA BEGINS CLEARING TREES AT GERMAN GIGAFACTORY 4 SITE "Crews in Germany have started preparations for the groundbreaking of Tesla’s Gigafactory 4. Recently-shared videos from the piece of land in Grünheide, Germany revealed that some trees are currently being cut down to make way for the upcoming electric car production plant." according to Teslarati: "Environmentalists have not been expected to protest or make any attempts at halting Tesla’s progress at the site. Tesla initially announced that deforestation would result in the company planting three times as many trees to replace those that have been cut due to Gigafactory 4’s construction." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-4-deforestation-groundbreaking-event/ TESLA GIGAFACTORY 4 DOCUMENTS HINT AT DEDICATED BATTERY CELL FACILITY "Recent filings for Tesla GF4 show the site layout for the massive complex, listing the primary buildings that will be constructed on the site. Among the most noticeable parts of this layout is a large area marked “cell.”" according to Tasmanian: "The size of the building marked “cell” in GF4’s planned layout inspires a lot of speculation. Based on its size, it appears that Tesla may be looking to manufacture actual battery cells on location in GF4." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-gigafactory-4-battery-cell-productionfacility EV SUBSIDIES EXTENDED IN SEVERAL US STATES "Several US American states have launched initiatives to support the electrification of their traffic. Massachusetts and Delaware extended their subsidy programmes, while Ohio is angling to introduce one. California extended traffic benefits to include those driving used EVs." says electrive: "Massachusetts will be extending its subsidy program until the end of 2021, with BEVs receiving a grant of $2,500 and PHEVs with at least 25 electric range receiving $1,500.Delaware is extending its subsidy program by one year until the end of 2020. $2,500 for BEVs, $1,000 for PHEVs – each up to a list price of $60,000. In California, lower-income (earning less than $65,777) owners of used electric cars have also been given access to the carpool lanes since January 1." https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/06/ev-subsidies-extended-in-several-us-states/ WHAT CAR? That will drive an electric motor with 141bhp and 195lb ft of torque and give a range of around 130 miles. The lithium ion battery pack is made in Japan by Panasonic. Mazda’s engineers have also tuned the torque delivery of the MX-30’s electric motor to be less frenetic than is often the case with EVs, reasoning that they want the MX-30 to feel less like a dramatic change from a typical internal combustion engine vehicle." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mazda-favours-smaller-batteries-upcoming-evs PATREON UPDATE I want to say a massive thank you to ASEER KHALID who upgraded his support from EXECUTIVE PRODUCER level, and opted to support with more outof the blue.
