Delta Variant in Kids, Myers-Briggs Personality Test, Suicide in Communities of Color. Aug 20, 2021, Part 1

Why The Delta Variant Will Make More Kids Sick As cases of the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 continue to spike around the U.S., children are one of the hardest-hit groups. As children under 12 remain ineligible for vaccination, they and other unvaccinated groups are facing the highest rates of infection and hospitalization of the entire pandemic.  Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control announced Wednesday that adults in the general population would be eligible for a third booster shot of their mRNA vaccine beginning eight months after their first dose. While the CDC cited concern about rising breakthrough cases in vaccinated adults, some epidemiologists have objected that the data does not support more vaccines for most already-vaccinated adults. MIT Technology Review's Amy Nordrum walks through these stories, plus a new human trial for mRNA vaccines against HIV, how historic drought in the West will mean the first-ever limits on farmers' use of water next year, a promising experiment in fusion energy generation, and why the core of Saturn may be more liquid than solid.      Pandemic Unveils Growing Suicide Crisis For Communities Of Color Rafiah Maxie has been a licensed clinical social worker in the Chicago area for a decade. Throughout that time, she'd viewed suicide as a problem most prevalent among middle-aged white men. Until May 27, 2020. That day, Maxie's 19-year-old son, Jamal Clay—who loved playing the trumpet and participating in theater, who would help her unload groceries from the car and raise funds for the March of the Dimes—killed himself in their garage. “Now I cannot blink without seeing my son hanging,” said Maxie, who is Black. Clay's death, along with the suicides of more than 100 other Black residents in Illinois last year, has led locals to call for new prevention efforts focused on Black communities. In 2020, during the pandemic's first year, suicides among white residents decreased compared with previous years, while they increased among Black residents, according to state data. But this is not a local problem. Nor is it limited to the pandemic. Interviews with a dozen suicide researchers, data collected from states across the country and a review of decades of research revealed that suicide is a growing crisis for communities of color—one that plagued them well before the pandemic and has only been exacerbated since. Overall suicide rates in the U.S. decreased in 2019 and 2020. National and local studies attribute the trend to a drop among white Americans, who make up the majority of suicide deaths. Meanwhile, rates for Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans—though lower than their white peers—continued to climb in many states. (Suicide rates have been consistently high for Native Americans.) “COVID created more transparency regarding what we already knew was happening,” said Sonyia Richardson, a licensed clinical social worker who focuses on serving people of color and an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where she researches suicide. When you put the suicide rates of all communities in one bucket, “that bucket says it's getting better and what we're doing is working,” she said. “But that's not the case for communities of color.” Read the full story, produced in collaboration with Kaiser Health News.     The Minds Behind The Myers-Briggs Personality Test If you're one of the 2 million people who take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator every year, perhaps you thought Myers and Briggs are the two psychologists who designed the test. In reality, they were a mother-daughter team who were outsiders to the research world: Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers.  They may have been outsiders, but Katharine and Isabel did their homework, and approached the test the way a trained psychologist likely would have. And the product they created—the Myers Briggs Type Indicator—would eventually become the world's most popular personality test. But how did it all begin? Science Diction is releasing a special three-part series on the rise of the Myers-Briggs. In the first episode: A look at the unlikely origins of the test, going all the way back to the late 1800s when Katharine Briggs turned her living room into a “cosmic laboratory of baby training” and set out to raise the perfect child. Science Diction host Johanna Mayer and reporter Chris Egusa join John Dankosky to tell that story.

Until May 2019, Yovanovitch served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. The 2020 Democrat presidential field is about to get locked by filing deadlines and that is making a lot of Democrats nervous. If you want to run for president, it is a 50 state process that requires filing papers and whatever else is required to get on the ballot. Alabama’s filing deadline passed last week. New Hampshire and Arkansas expire this week. The heavy hitters of Illinois, California, and Texas are just weeks away. Ohio and North Carolina arrive before Christmas.  "Good questions can change the trajectory of peoples' futures."—J.R. Briggs People are asking deep and difficult questions in their lives and there is an inclination in our culture to fixate on easy or quick-fix answers. What does it look like to sit with questions, ask better questions, and how can a focus on questions help us in our walk with Christ? Episode 51 of Spirituality for Ordinary people features an interview with J.R. Briggs, author, pastor, and founder of Kairos Partnerships. J.R. brings thoughtful reflection, study, wisdom, and encouragement in the area of question asking. Key Learning We often seek guidance and direction from God just wanting "the answer." But God's invitation to us is full of delight, wonder, and the unknown. Curiosity and wonder can be central to journeying with Jesus. We engage in wonder with a mindset of questions rather than only wanting answers. We study the parables of Jesus, the miracles of Jesus, but rarely do we study Jesus' questions. The gospels record Jesus as asking 325 questions. People asked him 183 questions and he only answered 5-8 of them directly. Things to Think About What big question are you living with right now? What question is God asking you right now? Spiritual Practices Discussed in this Episode J.R. uses the Moravian Daily Text  followed by a simple prayer. He journals every day and records five things he is grateful for. He focuses on simple things, giving examples like warmer weather, the taste of the coffee, etc. He also practices Sabbath and finds it helps to guardrail against burnout, reminding him that God doesn't need him. A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 13  The Big Shareholder Activism Episode – The Escalation Path Implications and Advice for Corporate Governance and CEO Leadership Our guests in a panel format include: Chris Young, Managing Director and Head of the Contested Situations Group, Credit Suisse Paul Toback, Former President, CEO and Chairman of Bally Total Fitness Marjorie Bowen, Retired Managing Partner of Houlihan Lokey and highly experienced public and private company director with an extensive list of directorships in which she was occasionally the activists’ board nominee. Corporate governance expert and independent director of publicly-traded companies, Tanuja Dehne. Our past two episodes have included segments on shareholder activism provided by our guest Chris Young from Credit Suisse.  Episode 11 included an historical look at the development and mainstreaming of shareholder activism as an asset class and the institutionalization of corporate governance through firms like ISS and Glass Lewis.  Episode 12 looked at the Vulnerability Framework and what brings companies into the attention of the activists.  We mentioned in a prior episode that a Wall Street Journal article had concluded that shareholder activism, which has been a perennial nuisance for chief executives, was now becoming an existential threat. So, what is it like to be in the crosshairs of the activist and what should you do about it? This Episode 13 is our big shareholder activism episode.  We take you step by step down the escalation path through 8 phases – including The Letter through the Proxy Contest. Chris Young from Credit Suisse will provide the steps and the pathway.  Governance expert Tanuja Dehne will provide some governance and management considerations along the way. Paul Toback will discuss his firsthand experience of being CEO at Bally Total Fitness and in the crosshairs at points along the path.  Highly-experienced, independent director, Marjorie Bowen, will provide context as an activist’s board nominee in the setting of activism and also provide governance and management advice for these situations. It’s with great pleasure that we announce that Tanuja Dehne has joined our team at Lyceum Leadership Consulting.  She brings her expertise to our board effectiveness and executive team effectiveness service offerings.  Warm thanks to our guests Paul Toback, Tanuja Dehne, Marjorie Bowen and Chris Young.  And special thank you to our sponsor TransparentCareer.  For those footnote readers, as always, please see the back of our album cover. Segment I - a continuation of our discussion on Shareholder Activism with Chris Young from Credit Suisse. We will cover what Chris describes as The Vulnerability Framework. We will discuss the conditions that make a company particularly vulnerable to activism. Segment II - a conversation with Allen Leverett, President CEO of WEC Energy Group in Milwaukee. We will discuss how WEC has reshaped itself through M&A over the last 10 years into a vastly different company that serves 4.4 million customers across 4 states in the upper Midwest.  Segment III - a continuation of our discussion with Tanuja Dehne on impediments to boardroom effectiveness. The most likely candidate is Loren Shaw, a skilled businessman with a high degree of financial acumen.  Their intense and consequential boardroom discussion will weave through our episode. A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 11  Board Governance & Effectiveness, Shareholder Activism, and Utility Industry Consolidation and M&A Guests include: Corporate governance expert, Tanuja Dehne Paul Bonavia, Retired Chairman and CEO of UNS Energy Chris Young, Managing Director and head of the Contested Situations Group, Credit Suisse   If you did not join us for our last episode, Episode 10 which was a special podcast on Innovation, you may have missed the announcement that we formed two companies under Leadership Lyceum’s brand: Lyceum Leadership Consulting which provides executive and board of director’s search, board effectiveness review, and an array of services for successor development and board-readiness.  And Lyceum Leadership Productions which brings you this podcast.  We also announced that we would be expanding the programming of the episodes this summer.  Well happy summer!  This is the first of our expanded episodes.  Welcome to Episode 11 which expands the programming into three segments.  We will continue to bring you the in-depth CEO and Director interviews around compelling business situations as a main middle segment, Segment II.  That main segment will be bookended over the next three Episodes with shorter Segments I and III.  At least over the next three episodes, Segment I will cover Board and Corporate Governance Best Practices on one hand and Segment III will cover the consequences of deficiencies in corporate governance, namely shareholder activism, on the other.  We hope you enjoy this expanded coverage which we will be refining over the next few episodes.  So please subscribe through iTunes and give us feedback on the new programming.  Tell us about leadership situations and subjects that you are interested in us exploring.  Please visit our website www.LeadershipLyceum.com for all of our archived media and offerings.  We will be right back to start the program.   Welcome back to this newly expanded Episode 11 of the Leadership Lyceum: A CEO’s Virtual Mentor.  We welcome three fabulous guests to this Episode.    Introduction to Episode 11 Program In Segment I the first of a series on Corporate Governance and Board Effectiveness, we welcome governance expert Tanuja Dehne.  Tanuja serves on two public company boards and is a frequent speaker on board governance -- most recently she was part of the instructor panel for the NACD Advanced Director Professionalism program earlier this month.  In Segment II we welcome Paul Bonavia, retired Chairman and CEO of UNS Energy (better known as Tucson Electric Power).  We will explore the triggers and interconnected events that have led to remarkable levels of consolidation in the electric utility industry and Paul’s leadership of the sale of UNS to Fortis in August 2014. In Segment III, the first of a series on Shareholder Activism, we will be joined by Chris Young, Managing Director and Head of the Contested Situations Group at Credit Suisse.  In the first part of this series we will cover the history of activism and the market for corporate governance, growth in the asset class, and answer a fundamental question: what do activists want?  We will be right back with Segment one with Tanuja Dehne on Corporate Governance and Board Effectiveness.    Segment I: Governance & Board Matters “Corporate Governance and Board Effectiveness” I am delighted to be joined by Tanuja Dehne. Tanuja is a corporate governance expert and serves as an independent director on two NYSE-listed, company boards: Advanced Disposal Services, a $1.4 billion revenue environmental services company and newly IPO’d, Granite Point, a publicly-traded commercial mortgage REIT.  She also dedicates her time to not-for-profit board service including the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, Young Audiences, HomeFront NJ, and Sustainable Jersey. That ends Segment I with Tanuja Dehne.  Join us for our continuing conversation with Tanuja next month in Episode 12 --- we’ll discuss derailers to effective boards and effective leadership styles in the boardroom.  And shall I say it?  Why not.  As a self-promoting reminder, the Lyceum Leadership Consulting does provide third party, Board Effectiveness Review.    Segment II:  Main Feature Interview “Special Guest Paul Bonavia, Retired Chairman and CEO of UNS Energy”  You may have read our article in the May 2017 issue of Public Utilities Fortnightly about our next guest - Paul Bonavia.  By sheer coincidence, I wrote that article for Fortnightly on April 1 of 2017 in Chicago Illinois.  Exactly ten years before that on April 1, 2007, the Illinois General Assembly passed a resolution designating April 1st as “Cheap Trick Day” in Illinois. I am giddy with delight to come as close as I can to a Rolling Stone reporter in featuring this conversation with drummer Paul Bonavia, who in his younger days was in bands with members that would go on to form Cheap Trick.   While I’m sure some subset of our listenership is interested in Paul’s pre-utility rock and roll lifestyle, this conversation was directed toward Paul’s “alternative” lifestyle as a CEO of an investor-owned utility and the sale of the company he led --- to Fortis in August of 2014.  Segment III: Special Subjects Segment “First of a Mini-Series on Shareholder Activism with Chris Young, Head of Contested Situations at Credit Suisse” Welcome to our final segment in this Episode on the dramatic, consternation-filled subject of shareholder activism.  That’s Orson Welles in his introduction to his panic-producing, 1938 radio masterpiece War of the Worlds. For the Lyceum, an allegorical backdrop of an environment well-suited to some “alien” form of activism perhaps? This is our mini-series on Shareholder Activism, and we are joined by Chris Young, Managing Director and Head of the Contested Situations Group at Credit Suisse.  In this first part of this series we will cover the history of activism and the market for corporate governance, growth in the asset class, and answer a fundamental question: what do activists want? As a backdrop, The Wall Street Journal reported recently that shareholder activism, which has been a perennial nuisance for chief executives, is now becoming an existential threat. Activists are going beyond just settling for board seats and are waging campaigns that target changes in top management at the outset. So far in 2017, and this is going back a few weeks right now, but so far in 2017 activists have started nine campaigns targeting top management. This is the fastest pace on record according to FactSet. I have represented two clients this year from the power and utility industry on board searches in the face of shareholder activism.  While two companies experiencing activism does not constitute a trend, my clients’ experience of late certainly seemed to warrant raising awareness with our CEO’s Virtual Mentor listenership by featuring this fascinating and informative conversation with Chris Young.  As we were in production on this podcast, Daniel Loeb, founder of activist investor Third Point, demonstrated this activism genius by accumulating a small 1.25% stake in Nestle, published a letter on a Sunday and two days later, Nestle announced a $20.8 billion share buyback as well as clarifying other strategic objectives. Closing of Segment III That ends Segment III.  We will continue this discussion with Chris Young in late July with Episode 12.  We’ll cover more on the “mainstreaming” of activism as an asset class and we will take apart the activist’s playbook and take you step by step through the Escalation Path.      Preview of Next Month’s Episode 12 We will be back with Episode 12 at the end of July featuring more on corporate governance with Tanuja Dehne and activism with Chris Young and an interview with Allen Leverett, President and CEO of WEC Energy Group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  WEC has been highly acquisitive over the last decade, Allen and I will discuss the company’s significant growth that has led to a uniquely different collection of operating assets over that time period.  Final Spot: Famous Last Words As we sign off we wrap with another new spot on our program called “Famous Last Words”.  In keeping with our War of the Worlds – Shareholder Activism allegory we will leave you to be restored to the real world in the good hands of, an out-of-character, Mr. Orson Welles.    Thanks for joining us.  We can’t improve without your feedback – write us through our website www.LeadershipLyceum.com and subscribe on iTunes.  See you next time.   Informative and Helpful Links The Lyceum’s Well-Tuned Governance Model https://www.leadershiplyceum.com/lyceum-board-effectiveness   War of the Worlds Link to one the Lyceum’s favorite websites – archive.org. It had been also called Malvinas Argentinas and Radio Phoenix, when it was originally established in the 1920s.24-hour news stations are successful in various countries, but so far, in Argentina, there’s nothing like that.In Brazil, for instance, the prestigious CBN, Brazilian News Central, is third in ratings in the South American giant. The oldest broadcaster of this kind is New York’s AM1010 WIns, that marked 50 years broadcasting only news in 2015.CORTINA MUSICALWe have now very sad news, that will be a blow to everybody linked to the world of shortwaves.Reverend José Holowaty died last March 26, as Swedish DXer Henrik Klemetz reports to us.Holowaty’s characteristic voice was transmitted via the now defunct KGEI Short Wave station in San Francisco, US.AUDIO No. 6Holowaty had been living in Paraguay, where he created Radio Broadcasting America. On the remarkable site: programasdx.com, there’s a file by Rubén Margenent from KGEI.On July 31, 1994, KGEI, the Voice of Friendship was coming off the air for good. But a little earlier, in 1991, they had broadcast programs tailored for DXers. The station only broadcasts on Saturdays.AUDIO No. 1Religious station Lutheran World Federation, or Voice of Gospel, was picked up from the transmitters in Issoudun, France, between 1830 and 1900 on 15315 KHZ; with 500 KW, and programs in Fulfulde language.Another interesting broadcaster is Radio ERGO, for Somalia, via transmitters in Dhabayya, United Arab Emirates. The station could be picked up between 1200 and 1300 on 17485 KHZ with 250 KW for Eastern Africa. They broadcast 7 days a week.AUDIO No. 2We continue with Africa. In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Bill Sycalik about running the parks. Bill is a plant-based ultramarathon runner and the founder of the National Parks Marathon Project, his full-time effort to run a self-directed, self-managed, self-measured 26.2 miles in all 59 U.S. National Parks. He’s on a mission to bring people together and experience nature through running the parks. Until May of 2016, Bill was living the typical stressful corporate life as a management consultant in New York City. When he read about the 100th anniversary of the U.S. National Park Service, Bill thought what better way to experience the parks than covering 26.2 miles in each one. He saw an opportunity to extract himself from the office, promote the National Parks and encourage people to get out and move in nature. Bill recognizes the value of a plant based diet for high athletic performance but now understands that it is not only what you eat which leads to optimum results in your life. Doing something fulfilling, managing stress, taking breaks and spending time in nature are all equally important. Bill wants to serve as an example to those who might feel trapped by their job, location, or lifestyle including diet, that it is possible to make a change. Since June 2016 he’s completed 32 trail marathons averaging one every seven days in some of the most beautiful natural places in the world. One of his goals is for someone from the local running community to accompany him on some or all of each run. So far people have joined him at 12 of the parks. We talk to Bill about the deep meaning behind running the parks and finding purpose in life. He offers his insight on making the decision and planning to create experience in your life when you want to do something outside of normal expectations. Bill still has some running and planning to do and you can join him for a run to show your support.   In this episode we discuss: Taking a break Leaving corporate Limiting beliefs How to know when you’re ready Making decisions The parks Challenges Planning First Aid Running with others Nutrition Change   Links to things we mentioned: – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 15% off your order by using the code “PlantTrainers” at checkout Bill Sycalik: , , , , – on Generosity.com – on Strava National NBC News: Food Addiction – From Addict To Athlete with Dave Wiskowski – – A Great National Parks Resource   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Mary Lou Fusi Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives!   We hope you enjoyed this podcast! Jared is happily married to his best friend, Michelle, with whom he is the co-director and co-producer of Red Light Green Light.  Together they have traveled to over 40 countries and have spoken in over 100 cities around North America. Jared's writing has appeared in Huffington Post, Converge, Esquire, and Relevant Magazine, and he writes regularly at JaredBrock.com. Jared's Life Story Born in the royal city of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, on the same birthday as Benjamin Franklin, Jared was raised by a Culligan man/youth pastor and homemaker/life coach. Jared was permanently kicked out of Sunday school in the fifth grade. He met the love of his life in the seventh grade, and kissed her that summer at a Newsboys concert. His eighth grade teacher claimed that he would either “be a prisoner or a pastor.” Jared came to faith in Jesus at the age of 17, and was baptized at a Christian camp the following summer. Jared skipped 56 days of his last semester of high school and graduated from real estate college before he finished high school. He worked as a realtor, then as a used car salesman, but eventually got tired of selling people things they didn't need. He spent 3 years as a youth pastor, which was more than enough. Jared and Michelle decided to simplify their lives- they took the 100 Things Challenge and volunteered at intentional communities and eco-villages as they backpacked through all 7 countries in Central America. Upon returning to Canada, Jared interned on Vancouver Island at New Life Church, and was mentored by Christian author Mark Buchanan. In between all this, Jared and Michelle started Hope for the Sold, after hearing Gary Haugen speak at the Catalyst Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Together they produced Red Light Green Light, which has been seen in over 100 cities around North America. While filming undercover in the red light districts of Amsterdam, Jared discovered his great need for prayer, and so embarked upon a 37,000 mile prayer pilgrimage around the globe. He chronicles his journey in a newly-released Tyndale book entitled A Year of Living Prayerfully. Jared spends his time writing, reading, speaking, and traveling. He also eats and sleeps with remarkable regularity. The Brocks have been married for six years, and together they've traveled to over 40 countries. They live in a 1975 Airstream Sovereign Land Yacht six months each year, and spend the other six months on the road. They don't have any children yet, but Jared would like to adopt at least a baker's dozen. Michelle does not. Episode 179

Episode 004: How Todd Wagner (and Mark Cuban) Sold Broadcast.com To Yahoo! For $5.7 Billion Todd Wagner is one of the reasons I started this podcast.  I wished I had recorded the original conversation I had with Todd last year.  Fortunately, he was willing to come on and share so much of his incredible story with us all here on The Learning Leader Show.  Todd is an amazing person.  One of the nicest, most humble people I’ve ever met… You would think that someone who became a billionaire based purely on their own hard work would have an ego… That is not the case with Todd.  He is such a giving person.  I feel very fortunately to now call him a friend. “You’re either going to buy us or you’re going to have to compete with us.” – Todd Wagner negotiating with executives at Yahoo! Welcome to Episode 004 with the CEO of Chideo and former CEO of Broadcast.com, Todd Wagner Subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher Radio.  The Learning Leader Show “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” – John Wooden  Some Questions I Ask: What was it like negotiating with Yahoo!? What was it like when you became a billionaire after the sale to Yahoo!? Describe to us what it’s like to work with Mark Cuban Why is the sales process important? Why did you start Chideo? What specific things can people do to get outside of their comfort zone? In This Episode, You Will Learn: The two questions he asks every entrepreneur he meets What it was like to pitch “Chideo” to President Bill Clinton Specifics behind leaping outside of your comfort zone and the importance of it The importance of loyalty to others What it’s like to work with Mark Cuban His original goals when he was growing his business How he and his Broadcast.com team celebrated How he is working on balance in his life (but it’s hard) Much, much more “Mark is a brother to me.” – Todd Wagner describing his relationship with Mark Cuban Continue Learning Go to Chideo Read about Todd in Forbes   Go to: Todd Wagner Foundation You may also like these episodes: Episode 001: How to become a master connector with Jayson Gaignard from MasterMind Talks Episode 003: How to take over and set bigger goals with Chris Brogan Episode 003: The incredibly interesting story of Maurice Clarett and how he built a 6 figure income after spending 4 years in prison Episode 009: The Creative Leader’s Guide to making money by thinking outside of the Box with Jason Zook (SurfrApp)   Did you enjoy the podcast? Having the ability to record with Todd was incredibly special to me.  I am very fortunate to have met him and learned so much from him.  I loved this episode.  Who do you know that needs to hear this?  Send them to The Learning Leader Show! Bio: In 1995, Todd joined fellow Indiana alumnus Mark Cuban to launch AudioNet, which broadcast live sporting events and radio stations over the Internet.  As CEO of AudioNet, Todd grew the company to employ some 300 people and expanded its offerings to include corporate events and business services.  In 1998, the company’s name was changed to Broadcast.com, and under the stewardship of Wagner and Cuban, went public.  The Broadcast.com IPO set an opening-day record, with shares climbing 249% from an offering price of $18 to closing price of $62.75.  In 1999, Broadcast.com was sold to Yahoo! For $5.7 billion.  Wagner continued to lead the business as a division of Yahoo! Until May 2000, when he declined an offer to become Yahoo!’s Chief Operating Officer to focus on other interests. Todd has since created Chideo with the goal of raising hundreds of millions of dollars for charities.  It is an interactive broadcast network featuring exclusive content by celebrities who want to promote their favorite charities or nonprofits.   Episode edited by the great J Scott Donnell
