For this Musicals Magazine Podcast, Edward Seckerson meets Samantha Barks, who has travelled far since she and Rachel Tucker went head-to-head in a bid to win the role of Nancy in the reality TV show I'd Do Anything. Unforgettably, there was Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years where she and Jonathan Bailey lit up the then St James Theatre with their conspicuous talent. Then came Éponine in Les Misérables both onstage and onscreen, and a Broadway debut as the feisty Vivian in Pretty Woman. Edward Seckerson meets her in her dressing room at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane where Queens Elsa is about to put the freeze on for a lot of adoring little girls.
In this episode, we'll take you on a journey through a diverse line up of captivating shows, including the divine comedy of Sister Act to the poignant gay drama of Breeding, and from the unforgettable Opening Night to the world premiere of Wild About You. Plus, don't miss our exclusive behind-the-scenes interview with cast members Joel Harper-Jackson and Elizabeth Ayodele from the smash-hit Standing at the Sky's Edge.
Out Of Season:The band is back in town, but Michael, Chris, and Dev are no longer in their twenties. Returning to Ibiza and the hotel where it all began thirty years ago, Neil D'Souza's razor-sharp comedy, Out Of Season, explores the gulf between past aspirations and present realities. As they trip down memory lane, Holly and Amy arrive, down-to-earth enough to save our feckless heroes from humiliating themselves. Written by Neil D'Souza and directed by Alice Hamilton, this comedy picks apart how we come to terms with the past and face the future.Lady Windermere's Fan:Oscar Wilde's irreverent comedy, Lady Windermere's Fan, follows the young Lady Windermere as jealousy over her husband's apparent interest in a mysterious older woman threatens to ruin lives. Set in the upper-class English society of the late Victorian era, the play satirises the hypocrisy of outwardly strict moral rules. With Scarlett Archer as Lady Windermere, George Banks as Lord Windermere, and Olivia Hallinan as Mrs Erlynne, this production promises dazzling period costume, live foley, and an immersive experience.I Just Like You | a gay myth:Written and directed by Zachary Wilcox, I Just Like You | a gay myth explores the complexities of gay dating through the intimate story of Pat and Leo. Pat, searching for something deeper, and Leo, who's developed an allergy to intimacy, find themselves unable to resist each other. Following a sold-out Edinburgh run, this play, long-listed for prestigious awards, marks Wilcox's London debut and stars Chandler James and Conor Mainwaring. The Big Life:Set in 1950s London, The Big Life follows four men from the West Indies—Ferdy, Bernie, Dennis, and Lennie—who arrive with high expectations and aspirations. Eager to make successes of themselves, they decide to forswear wine and women for three years to focus on their future. However, the women they meet—Sybil, Mary, Zulieka, and Kathy—have different ideas. This joyful Ska musical, blending Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost with the Windrush generation, returns to the stage 20 years after its Stratford East premiere.Wild About You Interview:Darren interviews Brian Spector, producer of the brand new musical Wild About You in a concert premiere starring Eric McCormack, Rachel Tucker, and Oliver Tompsett.
EDWARD SECKERSON meets OLIVER TOMPSETT at London's Wonderville Bar & Café to chat over his ongoing journey from The Who's Tommy (title role) at Arts Ed and a veritable portfolio of rock/pop shows – Our House, Rock of Ages, We Will Rock You – to more legit fare like Fiyero in Wicked and his winning turn as Will Shakespeare in & Juliet. As we speak, he is preparing to launch a new show Wild About You (with a score by Broadway's Carole King, Chilina Kennedy) at London's Theatre, Royal Drury Lane, with a jaw-dropping cast including Eric McCormack and Rachel Tucker.

It’s time to talk about the show that put the UK on the Musical Theatre Map - ‘Oliver!’ It’s the story of the orphan boy who asked for more and was sent on a journey that would change his life forever. In this episode we talk all about Lionel Bart’s fascinating journey to writing the show, discuss the incredible movie adaptation and how it compares to the stage show, the incredible influence this musical had on other UK musicals in the future, and Jimi cracks Tommy, whatever that means… Support the Podcast ➤ Oliver! What do you think about the character portrayals of Fagin and Nancy? Let us know! You might know Rachel Tucker from her stint as Elphaba or starring in Come From Away, but did you know she got started by not winning the search for the next Nancy - ‘I’d Do Anything’? It would be obscene of us not to mention the ULTIMATE Oliver Twist adaptation - ‘Oliver and Co.’ What’s better, this or ‘Consider Yourself’? No I’m being serious, it has Bette Midler as a poodle. We return to our first ever interviewee. Over five years ago, I sat down with West End actor David Hunter to chat about his career and recorded it, even though we didn’t know at that point we’d even have a podcast. Those were different times, for sure. This week, we did an online call to talk about his return to the West End stage after nearly 10 months. “Songs for a New World” was the first musical to appear on a stage in London’s West End since lockdown and I was there to witness what was a triumphant return, to say the least. Along with his cast mates, Rachel John, Rachel Tucker, Cedric Neal and Shem Omari Jones - they brought the house down on a number of occasions...even before the curtain! Prior to graduation, Bowman toured with the hit musical Fame in China, and performed as Rizzo in Grease in Turkey. She was also a performer with the Young Columbians. Shortly following that, Bowman returned to the states as Lady of the Lake in the Spamalot national tour. Very shortly after the Spamalot tour and her move to New York City, Bowman was offered an ensemble role in Wicked, understudying Elphaba. Bowman left Wicked to take part in originating a new musical Kinky Boots in 2013, but Bowman left Kinky Boots shortly after its Broadway premiere to join the Evita national tour as Eva Peron in 2013. Almost immediately following the conclusion of the Evita tour in October 2014, Bowman was offered the starring role of Elphaba in Wicked, beginning December 16, 2014, replacing Christine Dwyer in the role. However, in late February, it was announced that due to an injury Bowman sustained, Christine Dwyer was brought back for a limited four-week engagement as Elphaba. Jennifer DiNoia was also brought back for a limited time, until Bowman returned to the show in early April. On August 18, 2015, it was announced that Bowman will be departing Wicked (musical) in mid-September, with Rachel Tucker replacing her. From April 30 – May 8, 2016, Bowman reprised her role as Eva Perón in the Vancouver Opera's production of Evita, replacing the previously announced Jenn Colella. As part of the celebrations for the 45th anniversary of the Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts, Bowman was a narrator in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Toby's Dinner Theatre. It was announced on May 7, 2019 that Bowman will play Elsa in the national tour of Frozen. As Three In A Bar hits it’s twenties now seemed like a good time to try out a spot of blind dating. Introduced to us by the fabulous Michelle Taylor-Cohen (see episode 8), this week’s guest is composer, arranger and lyricist Shane Cullinan.Shane chats about his ensemble Tonic Fold and some of their early gigs, including the first Nottingham Pride - entitled Pink Lace, a show following a naked man covered in ultraviolet baby teats and a vomiting flautist. Since then the gigs have got rather more glamorous and have led to collaborations with the likes of David McAlmont, Rachel Tucker and Kathy Burke. They discuss Shane’s critically acclaimed oratorio, The Pieta, a beautiful piece set in Manchester and depicting a mother’s devastation at the loss of her son to street crime. Shane talks about some of the techniques he employed in the process of writing and scoring this as well as writing the libretto.Seb and Verity ask Shane about working with Kathy Burke again, writing the music for her West End production of Lady Windermere’s Fan.
