One of the shows Mickey-Jo recently saw during his recent two week trip to New York was SUFFS, the brand new Musical currently playing at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway. This is Mickey-Jo's ★★★★★ review of the musical. Suffs, the six-time Tony Award-nominated musical from Shaina Taub about the lives and legacies of unsung changemakers in the women's suffrage movement of 1920, is marching onto Broadway with producers Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai. Just about century ago, the Nineteenth Amendment secured the voting rights of some women, largely thanks to key figures of the women's suffrage movement: Inez Milholland, Ida B. Wells, and Alice Paul, to name a few. However, this movement was not without its faults. With an honest, 21st-century lens, the Suffs musical examines both the crucial building blocks and the cracks in the foundation of the women's suffrage movement through the women that pioneered it. With a book and score by fast-rising composer Shaina Taub (also known for collaborating with Elton John on The Devil Wears Prada musical), Suffs off Broadway brings forth an exciting new voice in musical theatre. Taub now makes her Broadway debut after winning the 2014 recipient of the esteemed Jonathan Larson Award and earning acclaim with her work composing and starring in the Public's Twelfth Night and As You Like It musical adaptations. Tony Award nominee and two-time Obie Award winner Leigh Silverman (Violet) directs Suffs on Broadway. Alongside Taub in the cast is Tony Award winner Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn. Rounding out the company are Hawley Gould as the Alternate for Alice Paul, Jaygee Macapugay as Mollie Hay, and Laila Drew as Phyllis Terrell/Robin. The ensemble will feature Dana Costello as well as Jenna Bainbridge, Monica Tulia Ramirez, and Ada Westfall making their Broadway debuts. The cast will also include Christine Heesun Hwang, Kirsten Scott , Housso Semon , and D'Kaylah Unique Whitley. • 00:00 | introduction 02:14 | overview / synopsis 07:02 | the material 15:38 | performances • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. This is the first full Christmas song that Joe has ever written. He loves New York City, he loves a cocktail, but he REALLY loves Christmas (the holiday garbage, not the religious stuff). Much to Jen's dismay, this song is not secretly about Bernie Madoff. The tune is sung by Grace McLean, who elevates it in an "unreal way" that straddles the line between humility and insanity. http://BPN.fm/Album to get the music. Learn more about your ad choices. Grace McLean is a musical theatre star who has performed in several different stand out productions. McLean made her Broadway debut in Natasha Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812. After performing in two versions of the show prior to its broadway run, she was able to bring the show to life The Great White Way. One of her co-stars in the show happened to be music sensation, Josh Groban. McLean was also able to take part in the reading for the Tony-winning musical, Hadestown. Although she didn't get to bring the show to Broadway, she got the chance to see what the show was all about in the early stages of the production. As her first show back post-COVID, Grace performed in Row a new musical at the Williamstown Theatre Festival alongside Season 1 guest, Micaela Diamond. McLean had quite the adventure getting to be part of a show that took place on the water as well having some surprise wildlife join her on stage during the show at the most unexpected moments. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jayme-starr/support

This episode of Let Me Ascertain you is the first of three culled from “The Way They Live,” the final performance of the Civilians’ season-long residency at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “The Way They Live” was written by Micharne Cloughley, based on interviews Civilians associates and members of the company’s Field Research Team conducted with curators, artists and visitors in the Met’s American Wing between 2014 and 2015.This episode includes monologues and songs crafted from interviews about three artworks in the wing. First up, actor Jennifer Morris portrays a curator discussing the Tiffany Magnolia Vase. Then, Cindy Chung performs the song “What He Saw,” by Maggie-Kate Coleman and Erato Kremida, about one visitor’s conflicted reaction to the vase.Next, Irene Lucio portrays the Wing’s new Latin America curator, who discusses special objects in the Wing and introduces composer Rona Siddiqui’s song “To Sleep with the Dogs,” performed by Jordan Barbour and Sarah Farrell. Finally, Jennifer Morris returns as a curator to discuss the 19th century painting “Moving Day,” which depicts the chaos that historically occurred on May 1st, when leases in New York City all expired and the entire city would move at once. This context sets the scene for Lady Rizo and Yair Evnine’s song “Crowded Solo,” performed here by Evnine and Monica Salazar. To hear more of these podcasts, subscribe to Let Me Ascertain You here on Soundcloud, or on iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/let-m…cast/id477971690“The Way They Lived” was performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 15 and 16, 2015. JBN selects highlights from three songwriting women interviewed earlier this season: Grace McLean, Janet Krupin, and Kate Steinberg. Song Presentation: "How To Sleep Alone", music by Joel B. New, lyrics by Heidi Heilig, performed by Visha Vaidya.
Called “electrifying” by The Huffington Post and “spectacular” by the New York Times, Grace McLean (gracemclean.com) is a multi-hyphenate actress-composer-singer-writer-teacher on the rise. In addition to performing in Off-Broadway hits like NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 and BEDBUGS!!!, Grace also makes time for her acclaimed original music, both as a solo artist and with her band, Grace McLean & Them Apples. Manhattan User's Guide writes, "this pop and jazz singer writes seriously infectious melodies with seriously antic lyrics. Her voice can raise the roof, or she can slide off a note and break your heart." In 2015, she will be performing in the world premiere of the Michael Mayer-helmed musical BROOKLYNITE at The Vineyard Theater, and her band will open the Lincoln Center American Songbook series with a free concert on January 21st, 2015. Song Presentation: "My Breadline Christmas Song" from Joel B. New's MACKENZIE & THE MISSING BOY (joelbnew.com). Accompanied by Daniel Kim on guitar. Recorded live at Michiko Studios in New York on 12/15/14.
We are in the thick of exploring our competing sex and death drives, and that interesting space where the two overlap and even coalesce. In this episode, we are searching for the "white light," that surreal experience that can really open happen in sex or death, when we glimpse the soul. First up is actor Parker Drown performing Trevor, an NYC “rent boy,” followed by Jeanine Serralles performing Kelli Dunham, a writer/performer with the tag line “Everyone’s Favorite Ex-Nun, Genderqueer, Nerd Comic.” Learn more about Kelli’s fascinating story at kellidunham.com. To close out this podcast, we welcome back Grace McLean, whose layered vocals you may remember from our Sex Variants series. Grace’s original song, “Where is the White Light,” was inspired by an interview we did with Veronica, an energy healer. We’re kicking off a new series here at Let Me Ascertain You. These podcasts are taken from our live shows performed at Joe's Pub here in New York City, and our most recent show was called Sex Variants 1941. As you may know, our shows are typically inspired by interviews we do ourselves but for this one we are borrowing our inspiration from a medical study entitled Sex Variants: a study of homosexual patterns. The book is a collection of case studies conducted by Dr. George W. Henry of Cornell University. Dr. Henry interviewed over 200 people about the sex lives, their childhoods, their family history - pretty much no stone was left unturned. There are also some really amazing drawings of the subjects’ genitalia, though only those of the female subjects. It’s unclear as to why that is exactly. We are bringing it all back to life in this podcast series. Dr. Henry provided his written analysis of each case study, starting off with his general impressions. So throughout this series you’ll hear actor Trey Lyford quoting from Dr. Henry’s impressions. Starting off here with his thoughts on Molly N, followed by a performance of her personal history by the actor Nina Hellman. After Nina, you’ll hear Molly N.’s words turned into song by Grace McLean in her song "(not) Normal." Then, Brandon Miller performs an excerpt from the case study of Louis E. And we’ll wrap up with a song written by Tim Acito inspired by Noel W. The song which is titled "I Have Had the Earth" is sung by Brandon Davidson accompanied by Tim. If you haven’t yet, please subscribe here on iTunes to hear upcoming episodes in this "Sex Variants" series. You can find us on Twitter and on Facebook – like us we’ll like you back. Until next time!
