The Bad Boy of Science: Particle Physics meets Science Communications

This month, our guest is Dr Sam Gregson, better known as YouTube's Bad Boy of Science. Formerly a Cavendish particle physicist working on the LHCb experiment at CERN, Sam found that he enjoyed finding ways to engage non-specialist audiences with fundamental physics more than submitting himself to peer-review and moved into science communication. The founder of LHComedy, CERN's first ever comedy show, he now runs science education shows that have played in venues as diverse as the Royal Institution and The Green Man Festival. His Hunting the Higgs talk was recently performed for hundreds of school students here at the Cavendish, and has been seen by tens of thousands around the world. Alongside this, he blogs, podcasts, and regularly posts videos to YouTube covering current scientific stories and in-depth breakdowns of complex particle physics. Today, we'll talk about what drove him to look for the most fundamental building blocks of the universe, why he now subjects himself to audiences of teenagers, and how he feels particle physics research can make a better case for itself… Stay with us!Useful linksCheck Sam's website The Bad Boy of Science and his YouTube channel: Welcome to the Bad Boy of Science YT channel! To learn more about the LHCb experiment, check the CERN website: LHCb |CERNLHComedy, CERN's 1st ever comedy show founded by Sam in 2013 , is still available online: LHComedyShare and join the conversationHelp us get better by taking our quick survey. Extraordinary Creatives
Bringing Large Scale Public Art to Life with Artist Producer Lexi Zelda Stevens and Artists Megan Broadmeadow & Angela Davies

Extraordinary Creatives

Ceri brings together three artists who transformed the Green Man Festival into a magical artistic playground. Lexi Zelda Stevens, Megan Broadmeadow, and Angela Davies share their experiences of creating ambitious installations in challenging outdoor environments. From holographic fans in the woods to midnight performances on rafts, they reveal the intricate dance of artistic vision, technical expertise, and weather management. The trio and Ceri give practical advice and inspiration about producing large scale public art and talk about the importance of building strong support teams. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lexi believes the key to successful festival art programming is having meticulous contingency plans while giving artists complete creative freedom to lead their vision Megan discovered that having triple the expected technical support proved crucial when personal emergencies arose during installation of her holographic installation Transforming her gallery work for an outdoor festival context opened up new possibilities for Angela's performance and audience engagement. Producing festival art requires creating a calm, supportive environment amid chaos, focusing on safety while letting artists maintain creative control. Festival audiences interact with art differently than gallery visitors - some prefer to simply observe, while others want to understand the technical details. Angela realised that staging work next to water created unexpected opportunities for reflection, both literally and metaphorically, in her practice. Lexi's experience showed her that the best commissioned work comes from trusting artists who haven't worked outdoors before rather than playing it safe. Through her midnight performance, Angela discovered that festivals can create intimate, quiet moments of connection even within a busy event environment. BEST MOMENTS "Being a producer is kind of like saying sorry and thank you a lot. And maybe I hear you as well in there." "Don't work alone. You're going to need some friends. You're going to need support. Use people's expertise." "I was laying on this body of water where the film was projecting kind of beyond me... it was quite magical." "Creating imagery that transcends the festival... and forgetting that you're even at a festival, that was really powerful." "Just dream big" "Don't try and make the art. My role is very clear in that I'm leading on safety and passing over audience experience." "The opportunity to make something potentially super large scale that sat next to this body of water, this pond, on the estate... it was really incredible." rWotD Episode 2738: The Peth Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Friday, 1 November 2024 is The Peth. The Peth (English language: The Thing) are a Welsh rock music supergroup band formed in Cardiff in 2008 by Super Furry Animals drummer Dafydd Ieuan as "an excuse to spend large chunks of his time in a recording studio" while other members of the Super Furry Animals were busy with solo projects. Ieuan asked actor, and former Super Furry Animals lead singer, Rhys Ifans to provide vocals for several tracks he had written, and recruited eight other people for the group, including Super Furry Animals bassist Guto Pryce, Meilyr Gwynedd, Osian Gwynedd, Mick Hilton, Dic Ben and Kris Jenkins. Ben was in an early incarnation of the Super Furry Animals along with Ifans, while Jenkins frequently plays percussion for the Super Furries and has appeared on all the group's albums since 2001's Rings Around the World as well as contributing to the 1999 single "Northern Lites".The group played their first concerts in 2008 in low-key venues in Wales before gigging in London and performing at that year's Green Man Festival. Debut album The Golden Mile was released in August 2008 to mixed reviews. The record's title refers to "the mile between the group's studio and the Grangetown region of Cardiff". A second album, Crystal Peth has been recorded but has yet to be released. In 2009 The Peth supported Oasis at a concert in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:17 UTC on Friday, 1 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Peth on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Stephen.

Why are some animals cute, cuddly, adorable – and some are slimy, creepy and downright weird? This edition of Crowdscience, recorded in front of a live audience, comes to you directly from the world-famous Green Man Festival in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Cymru (Wales). The programme recording was powered entirely by hydrogen. Our inbox has been bursting at the seams with questions about creepy crawlies, deep sea beasties, cheeky monkeys, endangered species and animals of all shapes and sizes. So, we rounded up a panel of experts to get some answers! Surrounded by 25,000 people trudging merrily through the mud, pelted with torrential rain, underscored by the warm hum of revelry, the BBC's Marnie Chesterton speaks with Dr David Jones from the Natural History Museum, an expert on creepy crawlies and someone who spends a considerable amount of time thinking about earthworms, ants, and termites. Also joining us is Jess Savage, a researcher from the Institute of Zoology in London who's an expert on ocean-dwelling animals and the impact of plastic pollution. Finally, we have Simon Watt, a biologist, comedian and founder of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. Join us for this very special edition of Crowdscience, in partnership with Green Man Festival, where we bring the experts closer to you than ever before. Interview with Oscar Lang

We had the pleasure of interviewing Oscar Lang over Zoom video!Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Oscar Lang has released his sophomore album Look Now via Dirty Hit. Deeply personal and sonically elevated, Look Now features some of Oscar's most confessional and inspired songwriting yet. Teeming with emotional intimacy, Look Now feels as if it was lifted directly from the pages of Oscar's personal journal. The 10-track collection features his newest single “Leave Me Alone,” which is both melodically sweet and infinitely relatable in its sentiment that sometimes you just want to be by yourself. A stand-out track on the album, the song describes the universally felt urge to self-isolate after a long night out. Quintessentially Oscar in its pop-fusion sound and piano-driven accompaniment, the confessional track is another example of his expert lyrical storytelling and knack for peeling back the curtain for a peek into his mind.Earlier this year, Oscar provided a powerful introduction to his new musical chapter with his soaring, symphony-soaked lead single “A Song About Me” which recalls past love over a landscape of resounding instrumentals, received airplay on BBC Radio 1, and appeared on major editorial playlists across Spotify and Apple Music. He followed up this momentous opening with the release of subsequent singles “One Foot First,” an introspective, melancholic release of emotion that dives into loss through an empathetic lens, and “Everything Unspoken" which draws strength from Oscar's own experiences with social anxiety and further establishes the album's emotive nature. Exploring darker themes, while still maintaining a relatively light and melodic essence, his most recent single “On God,” haunting in tone and deeply personal, offers a glimpse into Oscar's own journey through grief and how he continues to persevere. With a sound influenced by the piano-driven ballads of icons like Elton John, Paul McCartney and Billy Joel, Look Now calls upon classic Beatles songwriting through the prism of Animal Collective and Mac DeMarco. After a break-up that left him heartbroken, Oscar channeled his emotions into his songwriting as a means of catharsis and therapeutic healing. Using the creative process as his lifeline, Oscar grapples with universal themes of personal loss and longing—drawing from his own experience with a broken heart and the lingering pain of losing his mother as a child. The result is a collection of songs that showcase his masterful honesty as a writer and soulful artistry as a musician.Maintaining a rapid momentum as he continues his takeover of the indie-pop scene, Oscar will be embarking on a headline tour of the UK this August and includes performances at major European festivals including Green Man Festival in Wales and Waves Festival in Vienna.Known for his signature sunshine lo-fi pop and unassuming, sharp songwriting, Oscar has had a momentous rise in recent years following the release of his debut album Chew The Scenery which features stand-out tracks such as “Yeah!,” “21st Century Hobby,” and “Stuck.” The critically lauded release, which quickly added to his over 100 million streams, received major praise from outlets such as SPIN, FADER, The Line Of Best Fit, NME, CLASH, The Guardian, Ones To Watch, The Sunday Times, and more. The stunning debut easily built upon the success of his early viral hits “She Likes Another Boy” and “The Moon Song” and early production work, most notably working on indie pop icon beabadoobee's breakout hit “Coffee.”We want to hear from you! River health has captured the public imagination, particularly as overspills from sewers have been getting more attention in the media. But the condition of a river is so much more complicated than what flows into it from our water treatment systems. Agriculture, roads, how we use our drains, what we buy and even the medicines and drugs we take can all have an impact on our rivers and the plants and animals that call them home. So how are UK rivers doing? And what needs to happen to help those waterways that are drowning in pollution? Joining the BBC's Marnie Chesterton on stage at Green Man Festival in Wales to discuss all this is: Dave Johnston, team leader of environmental reporting at Natural Resources Wales, whose responsibility it is to monitor Welsh rivers. Joanne Cable, head of organisms and environment division at Cardiff University, whose focus is on biodiversity and what we at home can do to support our rivers. Simon Evans, chief executive of The Wye and Usk Foundation, who runs citizen science projects to support these two rivers local to the festival. The government has confirmed that it plans to extend the ‘right to buy' policy to people living in properties owned by housing associations. In rural areas, housing associations often play an important role in providing affordable rental accommodation. We look at the impact this change in policy could have on rural communities. Hay meadows were once a common sight in the countryside, but there are very few of them left now. Not only are they beautiful and a valuable habitat, but farmers can also get grants to manage, restore or even create them from scratch. All this week on Farming Today we're discussing land use and today we hear how the Welsh government has bought up a farm near Brecon for it to be run by the organisers of the Green Man Festival. Local people are concerned about what that means for the future of the farm. Presented by Caz Graham and produced for BBC Audio by Caitlin Hobbs

Rachael Gibbons discusses class, social mobility and Imposter Syndrome. In a talk recorded at the Green Man Festival in mid-Wales, Rachael discusses her experiences as a working-class woman. She asks what social mobility means when you find it difficult to fit in at grammar school or university, while at home your friends do different things and you're no longer part of their circle. She tells stories about her imposter syndrome, and how she overcame it. But at the heart of her talk is another syndrome - the so-called 'Jonah Complex', where you're afraid of your own success. Rachael recognises this not just in herself, but in many of her working class friends, she reveals: a fear that success will alienate you from what and who you know and love. Producer: Giles Edwards

The Lilac Time special with Stephen Duffy in conversation The Lilac Time is a British alternative folk-rock band that was originally formed in Herefordshire, England by Stephen Duffy, his brother Nick Duffy and their friend Michael Weston in 1986. The band's name was taken from a line in the Nick Drake song "River Man". Since its formation, The Lilac Time has gone through various line-up changes, with the Duffy brothers as mainstays. The band's activity has intertwined with Stephen Duffy's solo and songwriting career. The Duffy brothers and Michael Weston had recorded music that would become the band's self-titled debut, which was first released on Swordfish Records in 1987. Michael Giri and Fraser Kent joined when the band went on tour. The group signed to Fontana, which reissued the band's first album in remixed form in 1988. The group went on to release the albums Paradise Circus in 1989, and & Love For All in 1990, the latter of which was produced by Andy Partridge and John Leckie. The Lilac Time was dropped by Fontana then briefly signed to Creation Records, where the band was subsequently managed by label head Alan McGee. The band's sole release on Creation was Astronauts, in 1990. The Duffy brothers' cousin, noted-session musician Cara Tivey, contributed organ and piano to the album. The band later regrouped with Claire Worrall and Melvin Duffy (no relation to the brothers) and recorded Looking For A Day In The Night with producer Stephen Street for spinART Records in 1999. They then released Lilac 6 on Cooking Vinyl in 2001, followed by Keep Going, which was released in 2003 under the name "Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time" on Folk Modern. Runout Groove was released on 22 October 2007 on Bogus Frontage. The band played the 2007 Green Man Festival and the Queen Elizabeth Hall as a six-piece. The band's gig at the Green Man Festival serves as the backdrop to the film "Memory & Desire — 30 Years in the Wilderness With Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time." The documentary was filmed over six years by Douglas Arrowsmith, who included new and vintage Lilac footage. The film is accompanied by a Universal Records album of the same name, which compiles songs from Duffy's thirty years of music making. The Queen Elizabeth Hall concert is to be released as a live recording. No Sad Songs was released on Tapete Records in April 2015. A new Lilac Time album, Return to Us is planned for release in late 2017.

Jo Bartlett in conversation - talking about life in music, The Buzz Club, It's Jo & Danny, Ultimate Records, The Green Man Festival and much much more https://indiethroughthelookingglass.com/about-2/ Quote from her website "I was in my first band at 14. I promoted my first gig at 17. I went on to promote loads of gigs at The Buzz Club in Aldershot, which I started with Danny Haganin 1985. I booked bands including The Stone Roses, Blur, The Manic Street Preachers, Suede, The Happy Mondays, Primal Scream, The Charlatans and lots more. Soon you’ll be able to see all the fliers, posters, live recordings and memories I’ve collected on this site. Danny and I were always in bands while we promoted those gigs. We were part of the C-86 movement, releasing a couple of 12″s on Dan Treacy’s Dreamworld Records. I worked in London as a press officer and plugger for independent label, Ultimate Records from 1991 – 96. Organising press trips to Japan, TV appearances, radio sessions and live reviews for lots of fantastic bands. Including this live tv appearance for Senser on ‘The Word’ – i’m in the crowd somewhere!"
