This week's Women's Football Show is a very special one, as we celebrate Carly and the team WINNING the National League Cup with a 3-1 victory over Stoke at the Bescot Stadium. Two goals from Charlie Wellings, and another from Mel Johnson sealed the win and brought some silverware back to the City Ground. Rich Ferraro is joined by Adam to talk about the game, the team selection and the big players on the day - obviously the goalscorers demand attention, but Carly Davies' tactics were important in unleashing the attacking potential whilst keeping it solid at the back. We'll be back at the end of the week with our Friday 5 show, incorporating the big news stories from Forest, and a preview of the men's FA Cup encounter against Brighton. Welcome to another episode of The F Word at Work! Today, I'm excited to welcome Mel Johnson, the founder of The Stork and I, to the podcast. Mel has been a regular speaker within our community and spoke at The F Word at Work Live summit and she has is part of our amazing community of speakers we bring into organisations to showcase the many routes to parenthood. In this episode, we continue our series on how to support colleagues through specific paths to parenthood. Mel shares valuable insights from her own journey as a solo mum and addresses the fears and challenges that arise in the workplace when navigating solo parenthood. Here's what we cover in our conversation: Mel discusses her experience entering solo parenthood and how the awareness around this topic in HR has evolved over the years. She reflects on the lack of understanding and support she encountered at the start of her journey. We dive into the various fears individuals face when revealing their solo parenthood journey to colleagues and managers, including concerns about judgment and the pressure to maintain career stability while managing personal choices. Mel emphasizes the importance of reframing societal perceptions of parenthood and challenges the traditional narrative that couples must be involved to create a family. She encourages a shift in language that empowers solo parents rather than evoking sympathy. We discuss the significance of building a strong support network as a solo parent and how to navigate conversations with colleagues about family structures that differ from the traditional norm. Mel highlights the unique challenges solo parents face in balancing work commitments with childcare responsibilities, particularly as some organizations revert to requiring in-office attendance. We explore strategies for managers and colleagues to create an inclusive environment that recognizes various family forms, ensuring open dialogues and understanding. The importance of continued dialogue about different paths to parenthood is emphasized, encouraging workplaces to acknowledge and adapt to the diverse experiences of their employees. Mel's insights serve as a crucial reminder of the need for understanding and empathy in workplace conversations about solo parenthood and family-building challenges. Welcome to Part Two of this bumper podcast episode which is sharing our Diversity and Inclusion in Fertility Round Table conversation which was held on Zoom on 8th November 2022 with the aim to help you understand how many different people are impacted by fertility challenges in a number of different ways and also to give you a better understanding of the how these communities who are impacted. We know that this affects 1 in 6 couples, 1 in 7 individuals and that the World Health Org defines infertility as a “disease of the reproductive system”. As you will hear, fertility treatment is also needed for social reasons, and as such is a necessary medical treatment to enable people to have a child, not a simple lifestyle choice as it is sometimes portrayed. Sometimes this is the only way for people to have a chance of a child, it's also important to be aware that it isn't a guarantee. Here we discuss what employers need to know about being inclusive of other less commonly known paths to parenthood, such as solo parenthood, donor conception, adoption and then moving on to Surrogacy. The assumption when we think about fertility treatment is IVF – and normally with two people involved. You will hear conversations with Mel Johnson, HR Professional and Founder of The Stork and the UK's first and only Solo Parenthood Coach and Nicole Narracott, Adoptive Parent and Senior Business Change Manager. We also discuss how organisations can usualise, be inclusive of and supportive of LGBTQ+ family building with discussions with Wes Johnson Ellis, Co-founder of TwoDads UK, My Surrogacy Journey and the Modern Family Show and Laura-Rose Thorogood, founder of LGBT Mummies Watch our FMAW 30 minute demo on our services to find out exactly how we'd support your organisation with our training and membership Find out more about our services here Follow us on Insta and hear what our community has to say Join us on Linked In Find us on Twitter

Every serious whitetail hunter knows about Mel Johnson's world record typical archery buck, scoring 204 1/2". Many of us older bowhunters can remember staring wide eyed at glossy images of Mel and the giant in the pages of Outdoor Life and bowhunting magazines long ago. But not to many people likely know much about Mel himself. Humble and very down to earth, Mel didn't seek the attention and fame that could have easily came along with taking such a magnificent animal. Mel was a father figure, mentor, and friend to our buddy Rick Snell, and this week Rick shares some of the memories he and Mel shared along the way, from the Midwest to Alaska. Super cool glimpse into the man so many of us know of, but not many of know about.

This weeks Back Trails episode is chocked full of adventure and connections to history! Rick Snell grew up in Illinois, but spent over half of his life in Alaska. While there, Rick squeezed in a lot of bowhunting and along the way became the first bowhunter to take all of the big game species in Alaska including many grizzly bears, and he used recurves of his own making. Over the years, Rick also made lots of connections to some of the pioneers of modern bowhunting. Our friend Mike Mitten got us in touch with Rick to talk about all the bowhunting he'd done in the last frontier. But along the way we learned about his connections with Mel Johnson, Fred Bear, Glenn St.Charles, Jay Massey, Ed Bilderback and the Valiant Maid, just to name a few! This was a really fun episode to record and we thought it was only fitting to release this one as a Back Trails! Hope you enjoy it!

Mel Johnson plays "the Hermit," an old man who lives in a cave and tells mysterious and thrilling stories. Aired on October 29, 1944.
On this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to The Solo Motherhood Coach, Mel Johnson. Mel is a solo mum to her 4 year old daughter, Daisy, who was conceived using IVF and donor conception. Following her own journey into solo motherhood, and passionate about empowering women to fully understand their options on the path to parenthood, Mel created The Stork & I. Through The Stork & I, Mel provides a platform and community for women embarking on this path to parenthood. As a qualified coach, with over 10 years coaching experience, Mel supports single women considering solo parenthood as well as offering support for every stage of the process. She provides one to one and group coaching, and she also launched The Stork & I podcast in 2020, as well as a membership community for solo parents, Thriving Solo. Mel also documents 'a day in the life' of a solo mum on The Stork & I Instagram, to give a balanced insight into what daily life is like.In this conversation, Mel and I discuss her time living in Budapest when she decided to embark upon her solo motherhood journey; how she was always crystal clear about the fact that she wanted to have a baby - partner or no partner; and how, at the age of 36, she decided to take things into her own hands rather than wait for a partner. We also discuss the five real options when it comes to having a baby on your own; how it's almost impossible to be your best dating self when you've got the pressure of a baby at the forefront of your mind; the differences between IUI and IVF; and the steps that Mel had to go through in order to conceive Daisy. Mel and I also chat about how she chose a sperm donor; the financial implications of both IVF and IUI, as well as the financial implications of childcare once you have a baby; and the societal narrative around solo parenting. The Stork & I website: https://thestorkandi.com/Follow Mel on Instagram: @the_stork_and_i Link to Mel's podcast on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-stork-and-i/id1519111127Link to Mel's podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7FiJKxOdNTVIcGaHSBf71JJoin my private Facebook Group: Join my private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1870817913309222/?ref=shareFollow me on Instagram: @spinsterhoodreimaginedFollow me on Twitter: @LucyMeggesonEmail me: lucymeggeson@gmail.com
Lucy lives in South Wales with her two fur babies. She made the decision to become a SMBC (solo mum by choice) in early 2021, after the breakdown of her relationship. She's had four rounds of IUI using donor sperm - two of which were successful but one sadly ended in a missed miscarriage just before Christmas 2021 and the other ended in a chemical pregnancy in February 2022. She is now mid way through her first IVF cycle now (June 2022). The loss of her pregnancies hit her harder than she ever thought possible and it was the first time on her path to motherhood that she ever truly felt alone, with no partner to support her in the darkest hours. She started her anonymous instagram account (@smbc_to_be) in August 2021 to document her journey. She has found it to be a huge source of hope, support and kindness through the best and worst of times. She is honest and open about all aspects of her TTC journey and really hopes that it helps someone on a similar path. If anyone wants to reach out with questions at any stage of their SMBC journey, she'd be really happy to help. The main source of support for her has been the Solo Mothers By Choice UK Facebook group. There is also The Stork and I Mum Tribe Facebook Group and 'The Stork and I' podcasts, hosted by Mel Johnson. For other amazing SMBC accounts for people to follow, we suggest people have a look through the accounts she follows on Instagram. --------------------------------Thanks for listening to the podcast. Spoils were shared at the RHPC in a 1-1 Easter Sunday battle between our beloved Vixens and Coventry United, who are scrapping hard for their FAWC lives. In an entertaining game filled with incident and action, D-M, Nat & Shahan salute the welcome return of Mel Johnson to the starting XI. Lia Cataldo's hard-working wing back play gets a special mention, and we pick over our current issues with ball retention, especially in midfield areas. There were also quite a few dodgy decisions from the officials, in particular the failure to call a blatant offside in the lead-up to Coventry's equaliser. That said, we give Coventry their dues: they dug in and deserved their goal, and the point. Given the challenges Coventry have faced this season - the brutal threat of liquidation, announced days before Xmas, followed by the injustice of their points deduction - their refusal to be beaten is inspiring. We wish them all the best for the remaining games. Oh, and apologies for the slight hiss in the background of this recording - we had some technical issues that will be fully resolved next time around. Happy 4-0th episode to the Bristol City Vixencast! We are celebrating in style, with a quick off the mark victory against Crystal Palace at a vociferous RHPC. D-M, Nat & Shahan discuss Bristol City's return to pre-Christmas form, with classy goals from Abi Harrison, Chloe Bull and a whipped in windy classic from an Aimee Palmer corner. We reflect on great performances from Gwen Davies & Naomi Layzell, and wonder why Mel Johnson can't buy a goal. 4-0 flatters the visitors, whose keeper Emily Orman repeatedly kept the City shooters out. The good feelings are back but there's a tricky set of away fixtures to come. Durham on 13 February, then the rearranged London City Lionesses fixture on 27 February. After that it's down to the Dripping Pan to see season 21/22's familiar faces Lewes, on 6 March. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, though. We should enjoy this moment, City fans, because the team smashed it today. Truly. Why don't you try umpiring!Well, Mel went on to become one of Australia's finest test umpires. An era when the game was played hard with massive personalities like the Chappell brothers, Dennis Lillee, Javed Miandad and the might of the West Indies. This is a candid chat with Mel about what happened on the field and off. Women's Football Weekend served up a treat for City Women fans, old and new. Our team convincingly dispatched of Blackburn Rovers in front of a record crowd at Ashton Gate Stadium. In reality, we could have scored more. Mel Johnson and Ava Kuyken both hit the bar, and countless other chances were foiled by good saves and wasteful finishing. Lauren Smith will know there's more work to do if Bristol are to become a clinical, all conquering team. D-M, Nat & Shahan dive into a fantastic squad performance which saw first team debuts for Gwen Davies, Lily Greenslade and Maddi Wilde. Flo Allen excelled in the first half, linking up well with Aggie Beever-Jones. Beever-Jones was magnificent, especially as the game wore on. She bagged her first home goal of the season with a deft angled strike, late in the second half. Abi Harrison scored yet again, putting in a captain's performance that continues to inspire. City Women have found their groove this season, but it's clear there's still room to grow. Our next big challenge is to become as formidable away as we are at home. With this talented bunch, who are gaining in confidence with every match, surely this is only a matter of time. Solo parenthood is increasingly becoming an option for many, and Mel is a wonderful guide and supporter for anyone considering solo parenting by choice. She has her own experience of the challenges and realities of deciding to parent as a single mum and now leads amazing communities to bring others the support, insights and friendships she wished she'd had from the start. Here's what is included in this episode: The different places from which a journey into solo parenthood can start, and how it can feel like you're the first person to ever make this choice. Why it's so important to have clarity and leave comparison behind, and how society can make this challenging. How it's essential to have a support network or Mum Tribe, and how Mel loves to connect people through “solo mum matchmaking”. The importance of questioning and reframing beliefs around the fairy tales of marriage and parenting we've been brought up with. Goals 'n Ghouls! Yes! Bristol City served up a pulsating 5-1 Halloween victory against Sheffield United at the Robins High Performance Centre. The Vixens fell behind early but hit back with two goals in quick succession. Abi Harrison scored with yet another cultured finish and captain Aimee Palmer blasted City ahead. Palmer then bagged her second of the game - City's third - straight in from a corner at the start of the second half. Chloe Bull headed home on her league debut; Mel Johnson capped off a strong afternoon by scoring our fifth. The goal tally is impressive but, in truth, there were sparkling performances all across the pitch. This is a City side bristling with confidence, belief and ability. It was a performance we all knew they were capable of but have, so far this season, not delivered. The momentum is ours - onward to Coventry next Monday. Let's keep pushing, believing, winning. This week we are talking about Solo Motherhood with Mel Johnson and Genevieve Roberts, both former guests of the podcast so check out the links to those conversations at the end. Travelling as a solo mum. We last spoke to Gen - in Barbados as she'd gone to review a single mum package. Mel travels with Daisy and has been to Bali, Budapest, done lots around the UK to see friends but she needs it to feel like a holiday, so goes away with people or to see people. We talked about their decision to become a single Mum. Mel talked about how it took her 3 years to get there, and she spoke about the decision to let go of the fairy tale and how she had to think about the time. She wanted to be in a romcom! Now she has rewritten her story - she wants loads of people around her and has now bought a house near her family and has people coming and going g and how it doesn't matter one isn't a partner Gen talked about how funny it is looking back on it, now it is your life - she explained how she had her fertility checked, having had a miscarriage about 18 months previously, and assumed it would all be OK. However, her results weren't good so she quickly made the decision to have treatment and was pregnant within 6 months. Choosing a sperm donor Mel had two options from her clinic, so she found the process relatively easy. Mel coaches lots of women who have excel spreadsheets to choose their donors. Mel did speak to her family about it but she had already chosen. Mel says she tells people all the time how you have to view choosing a sperm donor very differently to how you went about dating online Gen has more choices and actually enlisted her Italian flatmate to get involved. She said it did feel a bit like a dating website, which made it feel weird. You aren't looking for a Dad you are looking for someone to pass on their genetics. The decision to have 1 or two children Gen talks about how she was incredibly fortunate to have both and how having a strong sibling relationship with her brother, she felt very open to the idea of siblings from the start. Mel talks about how her fairytale was two children, yet the practicalities are a challenge as she would love more children. She does has an embryo still left and she can't come to terms with the fact that she isn't going to have another child. She talks about how she doesn't think she could manage with two and that realistically it would make her life really difficult and she is wary of getting caught in the loop of ‘if she was in a relationship she would have tried for a second'. Gen explains how having the two kids has meant she hasn't been able to sort out toys for two years whereas Mel is a very tidy person and how it impacts her mental health if she doesn't have a tidy house. But you can't do everything - like she doesn't bath Daisy every night Tips From the minute you start to consider solo mothers hood - start saving, even if it's an inkling of an idea as it's really expensive. The treatment and then you are the only provider so get your finances in order. A lot of solo mums are strong women and you need to explore being a bit more vulnerable women and you need to feel OK to ask for help. Mel instinctively said no to an offer of help whilst struggling with a heavy piece of furniture in the Ikea carpark! Previously Gen was a people pleaser and now she says she is more focused. She talks about being more confident and also the importance of working out your priorities Have support as back up and have a plan b. Fears Mel has coached more than 200 women and the themes she hears are that you will never meet anyone and you are signing up to be single The impact on the child. The loneliness and whether you will emotionally be able to manage. The biggest thing is letting go of the... See https://acast.com/privacy (acast.com/privacy) for privacy and opt-out information.

Honoured to share three women, Nicole Val, Jocelyn Bell and Mel Johnson at different stages of their journey into becoming mothers with the help of science, by themselves. I wanted to respond to news that an NHS body has banned single women from accessing IVF stating research which included phrases like 'single mothers are a burden on society' and " sole woman is unable to bring out the best outcomes for the child.” I hope by sharing a snapshot from a different perspective...i.e one from those actually doing it; we can start to appreciate how incredibly strong, capable and absolutely fantastic these sorts of women are. In our final conversation with historian Mel Johnson, we will discuss early Mormon pioneer John Pierce Hawley's conversion to the RLDS Church. Find out how shocked his congregation was when he announced it to them! https://youtu.be/6TUUKWDnpcU Mel: In early 1870, John has come to the conclusion that he wants to join with the RLDS Church. John Larson, a RLDS missionary, over near Mountain Meadows/Hamblin area, reads in the Herald, the RLDS newspaper out of Illinois, that (1) John Pierce Hawley has written a letter to Joseph Smith, III, saying that “I rejoice in the doctrines of Joseph Smith, Jr, as did my father, and I wish to join with the RLDS Church.” Larson reads that, and he's a former LDS elder out of New Harmony on the other side of Pine Valley Mountain out near Fort Hamilton on the road to Cedar City. He reads this, and he comes galloping over to Pine Valley and Grass Valley, and John writes, "I was convinced that he was as crazy as people thought he was, but I became convinced also that he had the authority to baptize." So, he baptized John and his family, George and his family, and then John, as first counselor... GT: Is this his fourth baptism now? Mel: There will be a total of seven. GT: Seven, oh my gosh. Mel: He stands up in Pine Valley Ward, as the first counselor and preaches his farewell sermon to a very startled audience. Only one historian of Pine Valley will write about John, one of William Snow's, granddaughters, I believe, says, "And John Hawley, the first counselor apostatized." That's the full story. Yet they were among the first settlers, Presiding Elder, held the second anointing and the second endowment, quite a guy. Erastus Snow heard. He comes galloping up from St. George, won't let John talk because he's too vile of an apostate. He lectures the two Hawley brothers for three hours. Then he asked George if he has anything. George says no. Then Erastus Snow rides away. John and George bundle everything up, and they travel up to Salt Lake to catch the train to western Iowa. Check out our conversation…. After Mormon pioneer John P. Hawley rejected polygamy, he rejected the LDS Church and joined the RLDS Church.
We're continuing our conversation with Mel Johnson and we'll finish out the Wightites settlement in Texas. What happened to them? https://youtu.be/ix4oFxboQQ8 Mel 49:24 After 1853 they take about a year to get down to their final colony place, down in Bandera, Texas, in Bandera County. It is West of San Antonio about 55 miles. Bandera is a typical Texas western town and county. The Frontier Times Museum is located there. I am the staff historian for the Frontier Times Museum. They have a good Mormon exhibit there and there they were for four years. That is where the colony finally dissolved, and more than half of the Wightites stayed in Bandera and their descendants are there today. Mel 50:21 They became cattlemen, they became storekeepers, they became farmers. They owned lots and built houses in Bandera. Some are still there. An 1865 RLDS revival mission came to Bandera, Texas after the Civil War, and all of the Banderites supported the Confederacy, so did the Mormons, they were very militant, very anti-union. GT 50:54 Because of states' rights because the Mormons wanted to practice polygamy and they thought that was the... Mel 50:59 And the government, the federal government had not protected them in Missouri or Illinois. GT 51:04 Right. Mel 51:06 And 40 of them were baptized into the RLDS church, and they had an active chapel there in Bandera for 120 years. For any of you watching and listening, I'm going to put in a plug for 2021 John Whitmer Historical Conference is going to be held in Fredericksburg, Texas. I am trying to get the leadership to organize tours down to Bandera and up to Burnet County into the cemetery. GT 51:42 What's the nearest airport to Fredericksburg? Mel 51:44 San Antonio. So there you have it! Are you going to check out the JWHA meetings? Check out our conversation…. Many of the Wightites joined the Reorganization. Don't miss our other episodes with Mel!
