Episode 2480 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich welcomes Dr. Zöe Harcombe and they discuss calling out researchers for skewing the numbers for breast cancer screening, HPV, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/04/skewing-the-numbers-dr-zoe-harcombe-episode-2480 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Skewing the Numbers Dr. Harcome addresses health and wellness claims and debunks them when necessary. (3:00) One of the more recent articles was centered around red meat causing T2 diabetes. Another article claims intermittent fasting will cause cardiac death. (4:15) She shares a recent experience at a conference and addresses intermittent fasting. (7:00) She points out the details and explains how information was gathered. The headline is based on 31 people; however, the starting numbers of the study were significantly higher. This means that the entire study only used 1.5% of the information gathered. The report is then based on skewing the numbers. The next headline has to do with breast cancer screening. (27:00) There are very specific instances where highly extensive treatment may not have been necessary for some women. (33:00) The problem with this is that chemotherapy is toxic as well. Things like having the BRCA1 gene are not included in this, and shouldn't be; that is a different circumstance. HPV discussion: What is the current information about HPV? (39:00) Back to the breast cancer screening, Dr. Harcombe shares more information. (45:00) She shares how she personally approaches screening. They chat a bit about Princess Kate of the British Royal family and her recent hospital stay. (55:00) Belly Reduction Dr. Harcombe touches on a report about kimchi. (1:00:00 ) The claim says it can reduce "beer belly," but the standards of obesity are much different in Korea than they are in the West. A "beer belly" in Korea is a 32" waist. You also need to see who funds the studies—as usual, follow the money. Also, places like Harvard push an agenda; funding doesn't happen unless your study follows the agenda. (1:05:00) The system creates the narrative. (1:06:00) Dr. Harcombe shares what it takes to get research published; it's difficult, especially since her studies tend to go against the narrative. Episode 2408 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Dr. Zoe Harcombe and they discuss diabetes and meat, poor research, a need for a bottom-up revolution, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2023/11/a-bottom-up-revolution-with-dr-zoe-harcombe-episode-2408 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - A Bottom-up Revolution Dr. Zoe Harcombe has been on the episode before, and Vinnie recalls a quote she had discussed. (2:00) People who had gone through bariatric surgery and who had lost weight would rather have almost any other affliction rather than be morbidly obese again. Vinnie asks Zoe about the claim that meat causes T2 diabetes. (9:00) The idea that meat, which humans have been eating for millennia is causing a modern-day disease (T2D) is absurd. (11:00) Harvard School of Public Health is consistently putting out misinformation based on survey studies. They chat about why they are so inaccurate. Vinnie talks about how some of his consults go. (20:00) He shares with Zoe how he came to make “Beyond Impossible”. (26:45) It was inspired by a deep dive into “reimagined” frankenfood products. He reached out to prominent vegan doctors to get their input, but he was refused by them. Dr. Harcombe reveals that she used to be vegetarian and understands why people do it. (31:00) She mentions the book by Lierre Keith, “”. Vinnie asks her about her experience being vegetarian and vegan. (33:30) She realized that the health problems she was having were prompted by a lack of animal products in her diet. What Is the Endgame? Vinnie asks what is the endgame for doctors like Walter Willet and others. (48:45) Zoe discusses the importance of ruminants and topsoil in the food supply. If we continue on the path of veganism, we will destroy the planet's ability to grow crops naturally. Vinnie asks Zoe what is next in her research. (55:20) She clarifies the recent research claim that red meat causes diabetes. People like Walter Willet most likely send such studies for peer review to those who are most likely to agree with him. (1:01:00) She's written to Walter Willet personally and he refused to answer her questions. Vinnie asks if he and others' attempts to spread reliable health knowledge are futile. (1:06:00) Dr. Harcombe says there needs to be a bottom-up revolution of getting knowledge out. He also worries about how meat is being made more expensive and some people have to resort to cheap foods like pasta and rice to feed their families. (1:10:00) They both give suggestions regarding affordable meat options. Vinnie shares an update to his website that you'll want to check out: a VIP section! Go to for more information. The Truth About Red Meat and Its Relation to Diabetes In this insightful conversation, Dr. Harcombe dives deep into a controversial study that claimed a connection between red meat and diabetes. She criticizes the study's methodology, citing the lack of adjustment for grain and sugar intake, and the misleading classification of red meat. Harcombe also discusses what she sees as inherent bias in academia and research institutions, which can lead to skewed findings fueled by industrial influence. Ultimately, she encourages listeners to favor simpler, heritage foods over processed options, and to be critical of media headlines regarding nutrition. 00:00 Introduction 00:00 Understanding the Nutritional Headlines 00:24 The Hidden Agendas in Academia 01:17 The Global Push Away from Ancestral Foods 03:49 The Influence of Big Food and Pharma on Research 05:37 The Deterioration of Academic Research 06:25 Questioning the Nutritional Training of Researchers 07:03 Understanding the Hierarchy of Evidence 00:01 The Flaws in Population Studies 12:06 The Malicious Intent Behind the Study 15:52 Holding Institutions and Researchers Accountable 19:10 Conclusion and Final Thoughts --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/motivatedendeavors/message

What does the research support when it comes to our current nutritional guidelines? What about with regards to dietary fat and carbohydrate intake? Dr. Zoe Harcombe quickly discovered that our current dietary guidelines are outdated and not supported by science. Instead, the research is proving that just the opposite is true -- following a low-carb, high-fat diet is the key to better health. You’ll also learn how to stop overeating, what it takes to improve public health, and why she transitioned from being a vegetarian for 20 years. If you’re not familiar with Dr. Harcombe, she has a Ph.D. in public health nutrition and has authored six books, including, Why Do You Overeat?, The Obesity Epidemic, and Stop Counting Calories and Start Losing Weight. In this podcast episode, you’ll get to hear a condensed version of her top principles from several decades of research. ‘The only way to lose weight is to work with your body not against it, to provide it with the macronutrients it needs’ Dr. Shan is in conversation with Dr. Zoë Harcombe who provides a fascinating insight into the research and trials that have shaped policy and the evidence for the key advice to eat real food and choose foods that provide the nutrients we need. This episode explains the importance of macronutrients and the groups of nutrients that are vital for us to stay healthy and fit. KEY TAKEAWAYS • The only way to lose weight is to work with your body not against it. • Somewhere along the line, we misapplied the laws of thermodynamics to the body. • There is not a single law that states that energy in equals energy out. • Carbohydrates are good for energy, but not for much else. • You do not need any more carbohydrate than you require for energy in a day. This varies for individuals but can be as little as 500 calories a day. • The body can make carbohydrate if needed, through a process called gluconeogenesis. • Focusing on eating real food and choosing real food for the nutrients it provides will get most people to where they need to be. • It's not easy, but food diaries are the best way to work out what you can and can not eat. • The impact we can have with diet is even more dramatic than what we can achieve with medication. • Fibre may be a marker of health but is not a maker of health, there is a really big difference. • There are many things that make for fantastic gut flora and none of them has anything to do with fibre. • Gut Flora - If you want a fantastic gut flora – choose super healthy parents, be born naturally, be breastfed for as long as possible, have no antibiotics in childhood, eat good food healthy food and avoid junk food. BEST MOMENTS ‘Focusing on eating better and living your life doing as you please’ ‘Why are we drawn to carbohydrates, and in particular the combination of carbohydrates and fat which does not appear in nature except in nuts?’ ‘It was piecing all the bits together to understand what could be eaten and the combination’ ‘I can spot a carb addict in the street, the puffy face, the water retention the almost closed eyes’ ‘We are being told that the stuff that we can’t digest is what’s making us healthy’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Enduring Health Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Zoë Harcombe Dr. Zoë Harcombe is a researcher, author, blogger and public speaker in the field of diet and health. Vodafone. World’s 2nd largest mobile phone operator. When you’re in the business of connecting people, you have to practice what you preach. So who they gonna call? Employee Advocacy. Questions for Kimberley Harcombe of Vodafone UK: Tell us about Vodafone and what you do there. What prompted Vodafone to launch an employee advocacy program? What was the primary goal of the organisation? What type of content seems to resonate best with employees? What have been the main benefits for Vodafone and what have been some of the main benefits for employees? Has employee advocacy replaced internal communications such as an intranet and emails? If you started this program all over, what would you do differently? Have you found a correlation between employees who are active members of this program, do you see that they're more informed or engaged or generally more happy to work for Vodafone? What metrics do you use to measure success? Are you able to tie back any of these metrics to actual finance bottom-line ROI? What would be the one thing that's really surprised or delighted you the most about this program? What's next for employee advocacy at Vodafone and for employee advocacy in general, do you think?
