Keeping everyone safe in 2020 yielded a new scare system concept at Dead City Haunted House in Salt Lake City Utah that was so effective, it will continue to be used long after the pandemic subsides. Owner Timothy Riggs conceived and engineered a new system for actors to operate props safely from a distance while above patrons. Nicknamed "The Puppeteers", each of these actors operated dozens of unique scares from a single bridge out of sight. The puppets movements were very startlingly scary and also a very cost-efficient use of actor staffing. Design methods are not expensive or complex and can be fabricated with the skill set of the average haunter. But we have managed to keep it going for 15 years and, with luck, you can too. To make that happen we had to make a lot of adjustments along the way. Though we made some good decisions in the beginning, we had a lot to learn. Now, we're offering you the chance to learn from our wise decisions and our mistakes alike to start your home haunt in a way that will keep it going for a long time to come. Dive Deep into the Theme with Industry Experts & Moderators Crafting Memorable First Impressions using the key elements of Elevation, Insight, Pride, and Connection is the touchstone for presentations at this year’s event. This is my non-haunt life. So how is it that we are 123 episodes in and we have not done this topic? Regardless, we're writing that wrong this week and going over the basics of copyright and haunting. Specifically, we're going to use the copyright-related slides from my talk Copyright & Trademark for Haunters that I've done at HAuNTcon as well as Halloween and Hauntfest.  So, strap yourselves in and see what we have to say on this issue, it's been a long time coming. HAuNTcon, the leading event for starting and growing haunted attractions, is a trade-only event that brings industry professionals together each year. Owned by Urban Expositions, the event provides a platform for sourcing, learning, and networking. The next event will be held in New Orleans, January 25-27, 2019. For more information, visit hauntcon.com Our experience at HAuNTcon 2018 in New Orleans, LA We could smell the cajun cuisine as we entered the heart of New Orleans. A bustling city full of ghost stories and a rich history dating back to 1718. Some parts of the landscape appear to be stuck in time due to the preservation of many of the buildings. Just like we had remembered... We have been to New Orleans several times, the last time being 2014, but never to a Haunted Attraction convention. This trip was going to be a little different for me. I had to think about travel logistics to the convention center, schedules, first-time vendor stuff, entertaining my wife (who opts out of many things Haunt related), meeting up with friends, staying safe in the French Quarter, the various food options, and maintaining enough energy for the 12 hour road trip back to Missouri on Sunday. Our expectations were exceeded in every way. It was easy to get to the convention with the Haunt Shuttle and the friendly Uber drivers. Once I found the check-in area and our vendor booth, the show floor was easy to navigate. The HAuNTcon management team were very organized and made sure we had everything we needed. The host hotel, Staybridge Suites, was located next to the Harrah's Casino (which my wife appreciated) and there were plenty of quality eateries close by and free breakfast. And it seemed the French Quarter was much cleaner than last time we visited. We also appreciated the over-the-top Costume Ball that had excellent finger foods, amazing entertainment & costumes, and FREE drinks until 11:00pm! This was the first year that the party was included with your general admission ticket. And those light-up ladies dancing on the stage!! WOW. Granted, the HAuNTcon 2018 product and vendor area is only a fraction of the size of the Halloween & Party Expo area, HAuNTcon really shines when it comes to their educational workshops and demonstrations that focus on practical advice you can implement in any haunt. And it's all included in the ticket. All-you-can-learn haunt education. Overall we had a great experience at HAuNTcon 2018 and plan on going back next January 25-27, 2019. This was the first year that the event was produced by Urban Expositions and they plan on expanding the event next year. Now that they have their first year under their belt, they can listen to the feedback of the attendees and continue to make HAuNTcon a yearly stop on every Haunter's list. If you're like us, you never get tired of stories from Haunt Season. We never get tired of talking about it. Here are the highlights from our experiences as Co-owner of the Dead Factory Haunted House (Brian Foreman) in Missouri and Manager of the Deadmonton Haunted House (Darryl Plunkie) in Canada.   Deadmonton Haunted House (Edmonton AB Canada) "The first haunted house I've been to! Waited in line for a few hours but worth it! Actors walked around while we were in line to scare us, so awesome. The haunted house was so well done! Scared me so much, jumped so much, laughed so much. Well done!! So much fun! Well worth the price and the wait!!" -Kayla Bourgoin "Wonderfully terrifying experience. Arrive early in the day to get a good place in line, unless you're willing to dish for speed passes. Crazy amounts of imagination go into this 45 minute plus experience. Try not to rush through, but be forewarned. . Do not walk to slowly either :/" -Kristine Lynn Bowman   Dead Factory Haunted House (Mexico, Missouri) "I’ve been through the super fancy haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights in Universal Studios - Orlando, and The Dead Factory blew those big budget houses away. The actors are superb, the scared are bone chilling, and you can feel the level of care that they put into their craft. This will most definitely become an annual tradition. A huge thanks to everyone who made this entertainment possible." -Charles Dallas Parrott "We just got done going through the house and I am still shaking. I ran out of there as fast as I could and I am not going to have a voice tomorrow! So much fun! You can tell these guys love what they do! This week on Haunt Weekly, we're doing things a bit differently. Rather than talking about haunted attractions we're talking about our fair city, New Orleans. Since many of you are coming down here for HAuNTcon, we wanted to do our part to make sure that you have the knowledge and info to be safe, have a good time and maybe know a few off-the-beaten path places that you can check out. So, if you're planning a trip to NOLA, hopefully some of these suggestions will give you a leg up on finding things to see or visit while you're here.  Also, we are still going to make ourselves available one evening for drinks on our side of the river along with an admittedly brief tour of our haunt (All 600 sq ft of it).  But on that note, for those of you planning your trip to New Orleans, here's what we are advising you do to stay safe and have fun! It's a simple fact of haunting, while everyone loves scaring the ever-loving hell out of the customers, there's a lot more that goes into a haunt than just putting on a costume and scaring people. So this begs a simple question: How many hats do you have to fill when building a haunt? We actually started thinking about this weeks ago during HAuNTcon as we talked about all of the roles that a head haunter has to fill. Whether it's architect, engineer, marketing expert or human resources. We're not saying that each job has to be done by a different person or that they all have to be the same person, but each task needs someone dedicated to. For example, if you don't have a costume designer, who do actors go to when they they need to know what to wear? So, in this episode we run down those crucial roles and, hopefully, get you to think about who is going to fill each set of shoes as we go along. This Episode Includes: A rundown of all of the "decision makers" you need in your hauntWhy each role is crucial to your hauntA discussion about which are best to combineAnd which are the best to delegate to othersAll in all, while this episode may not solve your human resources crisis, this still an episode that you do not want to miss!

This week on Haunt weekly, we make our triumphant return from HAuNTcon and present our thorough recap including a breakdown of the classes we attended and some of the highlights of what we learned. As a result, this episode has a little bit of everything going on. Expect to learn a bit about haunt marketing, makeup tips, fireproofing, fire code compliance, haunt design and much, much more. It's a jam-packed episode that even ran a few minutes long (sorry about that) but it's hard to condense three days of learning into just one hour. If you're interested in the talk I gave, Copyright and Tradmark for Haunters, I have the slides, video and handout on my site here. If there's interest, we'll make our notes available as a Google Doc though neither of us have notes from talks that had robust handouts. This week's episode includes: Overview of What HAuNTcon IsDiscussion of Pre-HAuNTcon Visit to the InsanitariumBlow-by-Blow of the Classes We AttendedWrap-up and Final Thoughts All in all it was a great conference and it made for one of the more exciting podcasts we've done!

This week on Haunt Weekly, we are at HAuNTcon. However, since the conference is ongoing you'll have to wait until next week for our wrap up and other wonderful content. However, we aren't ones to disappoint, we have a great show this week as we bring on what we hope will be our semi-regular guest, Kyle.  Kyle is, without a doubt, one of the most experienced and talented haunt actors we've met. With seven years of experience he's done everything from our home haunt, to charity haunts, to mega haunts. He's worked nearly every kind of scare and played nearly every kind of character and he's done it all over the country. So when we have some actor-heavy topics, he's the guy we're calling in for back up and this week it's about the basics of distract and startle, how to get customers to let down their guard so you can share the !@#$ out of them. This week's episode includes: The Basics of Distract and StartleHow to Use Lighting and LayoutSeveral Example ScaresLots of Great War Stories All in all, this is a fun and informative episode that you do not want to miss!

"The Proof in the Painting" is a tale that originated somewhere in Europe--we haven't been able to trace its exact origin, so if you have any information on that point, please let us know. The title is our own creation, and it is of course a play on the old saying, "The proof of the pudding is in the eating", because the story illustrates how the best way of judging success may not be the most obvious. We're coming to you from Fox Lake, Illinois, where Kimberly rejoins us after returning from two weeks in Reno. Dennis and Zephyr, meanwhile, have returned to the Chicago area from the Detroit area, where Dennis took a little trip to Windsor, Ontario, and Zephyr spent three packed days (and nights) at HauntCon 2007.Haunted Attraction Convention HauntCon is the annual convention and tradeshow for the haunted attraction industry, of which Zephyr is an enthusiastic accomplice. He's worked at a number of noted (or notorious) haunted houses, even dragging mom and dad into the act a couple of years ago in Salem, MA; he also designs his own haunts, of course. This event featured an exhibition of the latest props and gizmos, movie screenings, seminars and a costume ball that featured vampires, ghouls and demons milling about in the hotel lobby among the (hopefully) amused business travelers. Zephyr also participated in a tour of the world's largest (and possibly other kinds of -est) haunted house, the four-story Erebus in Pontiac. Happy Listening,Dennis (the rich man), Kimberly (Agnatha) and Zephyr (Theocles)
