Noah Labhart ‘05 joins us today to talk about his on-demand marketplace for manufacturing labor, Veryable Incorporated. Noah breaks down challenges, opportunities, and solutions he sees within the industry, and tells us maybe the biggest BHAG we've heard on the show. We appreciate Noah for dropping his wisdom on this week's episode, and we encourage you to check out his podcast, Code Story! Thanks and Gig ‘em! If you enjoyed today's episode, please take a moment to leave us a 5-star review and connect with Chris and Greg on LinkedIn! About: Veryable's mission is to revitalize the American manufacturing sector by allowing businesses to “variablize” labor costs in small increments. This lets them increase costs only as their output increases, which will empower businesses to scale while maintaining a lower and more constant cost structure. We aim to achieve this through our technology, which enables us to transform an antiquated and inefficient labor market into a real-time marketplace for labor. This will put more people to work and relieve the burden on producers, improving overall productivity and enabling organic growth. 87. Visibility Can Be Fun There is a myth that exists that I used to believe for a long time, and I have heard others share with me as well. Visibility is extra work…it's hard to do…I don't have time for it. All those thoughts will be true if that is what you believe. However, what if you looked at visibility in a different way? What if you thought about gaining visibility as something that is easy to do…that it doesn't add extra time and that it could actually be fun and playful? Fun can have a positive impact on your personal brand authenticity. When you inject fun and creativity into your personal brand, you are showcasing your personality and values in a unique way. This can help you establish a more authentic and genuine image that people can trust and rely on. Fun can also help you connect with your team, peers and management on a deeper level, which can help you build stronger relationships with them. I invite you to stay open to this new possibility and way of thinking as you listen to today's episode! In this episode: Quotes and insights from an article called "Why Do We Stop Playing?" How are organizations looking at play as form of generating ideas and building an innovative culture. What if you could overcome impostor syndrome through play? Examples of how play can create more employee engagement. Tips and ideas to unleash more play for you in your leadership and in your organization. Inject more fun into your personal brand and leadership. See the impact that fun and playfulness can have on your visibility. Look for opportunities to leverage more fun into your team and workplace. "When you're holding regular meetings when there's nothing really to talk about, that you're just talking about when we're going to get the yard mowed and when we're going to get that tree trimmed and when we're going to get that, you know, those financial things that we don't need to get done. When you're holding conversations like this on a regular basis, it's easier to talk about difficult things because your brain has become used to the feeling of difficult things and your body doesn't run away from it." - Ron Lee Episode 46: A heart to Hart Conversation Are you feeling lost in the maze of marriage? Ron and Lexie open up the conversation and embark on a discussion about a godly and successful relationship. We dive deep into the principles of love that focus on protection, trust, hope, and perseverance discussed in 1 Corinthians 13. This discussion includes how your attitude towards issues can make or break your union. Instead of pointing fingers at each other, learn to introspect and identify what needs to change within yourself. This discussion includes a talk about how empathy is likened to driving a standard automobile. In this Podcast: Why is it crucial to engage in open and honest conversations in a marriage? What is the significance of having unconditional positive regard and empathy in a relationship? How do past experiences and learned behaviors influence how individuals manage conflict? The people's upbringing, childhood experiences, and observations of their parents' behavior during conflict shape their own approach to conflict resolution. The individuals often operate based on what they have learned and experienced, and this can influence their reactions and behaviors in conflict situations. Therefore, understanding these past experiences and learned behaviors is crucial in order to effectively navigate and resolve conflicts in relationships. Why is it significant to grasp the concept of feeling with your partner and understanding their perspective? Empathy is important in a relationship because it involves putting yourself in your partner's place, understanding their story, and feeling with them. It is about listening to their feelings and experiences without making it about yourself. Engaging in the practice of empathy can help couples navigate difficult conversations and create a safe space for understanding and connection. Most people believe that you either “have depression” or you don't. That if you get diagnosed with depression or anxiety, it's like a permanent trait that you have - and that all you can do is learn to cope with it. I don't think about depression or anxiety that way. I think of it on a scale- when your symptoms are severe they interfere with your life in a big way, when your symptoms are mild, or when your symptoms go away, it doesn't interfere with your life anymore. Depression and Anxiety disorders can actually be resolved when we chip away at them. Thinking this way gives us agency, power to change our own lives. Looking for affordable online counseling? As expat moms, we are in a unique position to live all over the world in the midst of other cultures. This comes with some amazing benefits of exposure and significant relationships with people of many cultures and colors—this is one of the research-supported ways to promote anti-racism. If we have close personal relationships with people who are different from us we can lose our inaccurate bias'. However, being an expat and living in another culture also introduces new bias'. Expat children have difficult experiences abroad that can cause bias' in a very real and personal way. Without deliberate mothering, these experiences can cause our children to associate an entire culture with a bad experience they had. We need mothers who are actively training the minds of their children to be anti-racist so we can build a more fair society and we can all enjoy and learn from the diversity of each other. I hope this podcast will give you some helpful tools to raise Anti-racist kids as I discuss this topic with Rosemay Webster. Pausing to not miss out on what God is teaching/leading. Pausing before we intervene on our kids' behalf. Do you remember commercial breaks? They were built-in pauses, breaks from the drama or sitcom. With DVR's or streaming services we can easily skip or minimize the pauses. But what if “pause” is what your everyday really needs? Not a week-long, pick your favorite vacation spot pause, but a quick moment to stop and say, “God, where are you leading? What are you saying?” or “Help me today because I don't have what it takes to make it through the day.” Kirsten Watson is a busy woman - a wife, a mom to seven, an author and podcast host - but all those responsibilities only lead her to pause more. Whether it's in the moments just after her alarm goes off, or in the middle of after-school stories, she challenges us to slow down and first ask God for the help we need, and then to see where he is at work. She encourages us to practice discernment for what is most helpful in our kids' sanctification - either stepping in or stepping back. She invites us to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit available to us if we will only ask. I wish I knew this when I first became a pharmacist… If I had the opportunity to go back in time to 10 years ago and have a conversation with my former self and say “Hey—THIS is what you have to know. THIS is what's going to help you avoid the painful moments of regret—THIS is what's going to catapult your career and set you up for the most successful I KNOW YOU WILL BE.” There would be a few key things I would share. I can't go back in time, but I CAN use this time you're giving me by sharing exactly what those things are. What if all of your planning…is what's blocking you from realizing your dreams? What if the harder you try…the farther away you get from fulfillment? What if what you've ignored and scoffed at has been the answer to what you truly wanted this whole time? What if the idea to SURRENDER…is not a last resort…but a…FIRST resort? I'm not talking about giving up—I'm talking about SURRENDER, and there is a HUGE difference, as today's guest and author of the book The Magic of Surrender, Kute Blackson, will share. Kute's impact has been recognized by modern-day influencers including Jack Canfield, Larry King, Les Brown, and recognized by Inc magazine as ‘The Mindfulness Guru Billionaires Go To For Advice'. Are you a "people pleaser"? Constantly adopting other peoples' feelings to show that you care...and feeling LOST trying to show empathy? In building a personal brand, your pharmacy career, and leadership skill overall, empathy can be misunderstood as adopting others' feelings and working to make everyone happy. That, as we know, never works. So then, what is it? After practicing full-time as a community pharmacist over the last 10 years, I have found 3 main reasons why this is essential to integrate into your pharmacy, and I share each with you in this episode! In Part 3 of our series on Emotional Intelligence, we dive into the skill of authentic empathy: how to consider colleagues' and patients' feelings while making a judgment call as a pharmacist. Emotions riddle our daily lives, and range just about as much as the path of a roller coaster. That does not make us “weak”--just human! What can make us appear super human is the control or regulation of the normal emotions we experience. Just in a single day, we can feel sad, happy, angry, excited, fearful—the list is endless! Having these feelings is normal—being a prisoner to them is where they can wreak havoc in living an enjoyable life. Most personal brands fail—they start off excited, motivated, and full of wonderful expectation. And that's part of why they fail. There are, however, those few personal brands that DOMINATE their niche, drive real results and outcomes for the people they exist to serve, and are genuine influencers evidenced by the lives they improve, not the likes they elicit. So…WHAT IS THE DEAL?! What are these brands doing that empower them to go the distance, outlast their competition when their space seemed oversaturated? WARNING: That's exactly what I share in a super deep dive of #realtalk on this week's episode of The Fit Pharmacist Healthcare Podcast. I will not waste your time with what is trending—I will only dispense the timeless truth that you may not want to hear, but need to hear. Your destiny of greatness depends on it! When it comes to building a personal brand, are you looking to love the brand…or to ‘love the skin you're in'? That's exactly what we will cover in this week's podcast episode, interviewing a pharmacist who took her unique passion, merged them with her unique skills, used them to serve her audience, and in turn created company from ground zero that is now doing over $10K sales—A DAY. Allyson Brennan is a pharmacist with 13 years' experience specializing in Neurology and is now a hospital Clinical Pharmacy Manager in Nashville, TN. She received a B.S. in Psychology minor in chemistry/biology as an undergraduate from Millsaps College and then went on to receive her B.S in Pharmaceutical Sciences and her PharmD. from The University of Mississippi. This year, Allyson founded and created her own natural skincare company called Emogene & Co. focusing on effective natural skincare and the science behind purposeful ingredients. She created this company after noticing the skincare industry producing products full of toxic and ineffective filler ingredients. As a child, she was inspired by her grandmother, Emogene, who had a remedy for every skin issue or ailment. Throughout her professional career as a pharmacist, she noticed how she was drawn to medicinal chemistry and how specific molecules affected organs in the body. After becoming a mother, she began to focus on what molecules are available straight from the Earth to provide nutrition for our largest organ, our skin. In less than a year, Allyson has grown her company organically, filled over 5,000 individual orders and is also available in 11 locations including dermatology clinics and medical spas, all while continuing to work full-time in Pharmacy Administration during the day. Racism is alive and well. Hatred, anger, and injustice seem to be the theme of 2020 that the world can't seem to escape. BUT. What if I told you that you have the most effective weapon to fight the aforementioned atrocities? The weapon is also one of the most powerful brands anyone can ever encounter, and it goes hand-in-hand with one of the most difficult—yet most freeing—actions you can ever take in your life. I am talking about love and forgiveness. It's easier to love someone who loves you back. It's a simpler process to forgive someone when there is mutual reconciliation. But what about when there is injustice that is multi-generational? This week's podcast was an event I heard live from two serendipitous individuals who were linked from their ancestors, and had their lives completely turned upside down from the story they share in what you are about to hear in this episode. It has changed their lives so much, that this story was turned into a book, The Dream King, and serves as the platform that is their life-calling to travel the world to share the ultimate personal brand of love and forgiveness in one of the most touching and unbelievable stories you will hear on this platform. This is one you will want to really listen closely to—and take note of the choice we all have that can shape the destiny of our lives. “I just need to get more motivation!” is one of the most common desires I hear from pharmacy students AND pharmacists when they realize they are not living their ideal life or have their dream job. It's safe to say you will not create your best work or put your best self forward when you feel sad, uninspired, or overwhelmed. When you're not creating your best work, it can negatively affect the quality of your personal brand, which is the most powerful competitive edge you can create for your career. Knowing this, we are always looking for ways to pep ourselves up and have more “good days”. Many of us are seeking a boost or wave of inspiration outside of ourselves, and while those do come from time to time, what if I told you there was a way to create your own motivation, any time you wanted, INSTANTLY? Using a resource only you are the most familiar with: yourself? In this episode, I share the 5 scientifically-backed biohacks you can use to snap yourself out of feeling inundated and into feeling inspired. “Do what you love, and you'll never have to work a day in your life” = the biggest load of crap that can wreak havoc not only on your progress, but the quality of your mental health. Why? As pharmacists, we tend to be Type-A driven, make-a-list-and-check-it-twice type of folk. If you're pursuing a career, or building your personal brand, and come to find out how much work it actually requires yet you believe that quote…imagine the second-guessing that can go on: “Am I doing the right thing?” “Am I even qualified / cut out / to do this?” “Am I good enough to make this happen?” It's good to check in with your progress and have healthy conversations about professional growth and development…but unless you are intentionally implementing the 4 formulas I share in this episode of the REFILLED podcast mini-series, you may be at risk for diverting your best intentions toward self-depreciation. You hear me talk a lot about self-care…yet stress continues to run rampant not just in pharmacy, but the global community of healthcare. It's not from a lack of action, but perhaps our focus is off—what if we shifted from only looking at self-care…to diving deeper into SOUL care? One woman is leading this path by sharing her story that began as a refugee from Ukraine. What happened to George Floyd was beyond wrong. This isn't something that happened “back in my grandparents' day”—this happened in OUR day. 2020. And it's inexcusable. This affects far more than pharmacy, and if you turn a blind eye to what's going on, you're not only doing the profession a disservice—you're doing a disservice to your patients. And if we can't serve them to the reality of the world we all live in: what's the point? It's not about rioting—it's about something far deeper than that, and it's unfortunately our current reality. This is not some one-time occurrence: this is every day, you just might not see or hear about it. What you see right now, what you are experiencing—the fear, uncertainty, hatred—this is the daily life every single minority has to deal with on a daily basis, and it is SICK. It is WRONG. It is NOT OK. This is the reality of our broken world, and I am not saying this as a way of saying “I get it” or “I understand what you're going through”—I do not. There's no way, because I am not a minority. There's absolutely no way I can even begin to know what it's like to even have a day of what you go through, and I will never pretend to say “I know”. I am NOT an expert nor claim to have “the answer”, but who I AM is a Christian. I AM a child of God. I AM your brother. Part-time Christians cannot defeat full-time devils. The enemy is NOT a person, the enemy is hate, the divine will of Satan. The antidote to hate is LOVE. Racism is NOT OK—it's not something to ignore or “give a pass” to. It's not love, it's hate, and doing nothing or keeping silent helps nobody. I am not condoning any type of reaction except for this: if you see something, say something. “One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” "The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these.” —Mark 12:28-31 I filmed the following in downtown Pittsburgh, PA on Fifth Avenue where protestors gathered. I discuss the implications this has for our profession, our patients, and our community as healthcare providers. Resource to Stand Out in Your Pharmacy Career: 1. In pharmacy, we talk a lot about “health”—in particular, there is one facet that is not only essential in all pharmacy practice settings, but can actually be a unique niche of specialization: mental health. That's why in this episode, we are going to dive deep into the role of being a psychiatric pharmacist with our guest, Abbey Krysiak, PharmD, BCPP, who currently serves as an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the LECOM School of Pharmacy for the past 9 years. She graduated from the LECOM School of Pharmacy in 2010 and completed a PGY1 residency at Millcreek Community Hospital/LECOM. Following residency, she practiced as a clinical pharmacist on the geriatric behavioral health unit at Millcreek Community Hospital and this is where she currently practices as a psychiatric pharmacist. Following residency, she pursued her board certification in psychiatric pharmacy, and believes this solidified her area of expertise and helped distinguish her role as a clinical pharmacist in this area. She also is a full-time faculty member, with responsibilities including teaching the psychiatric curriculum as well as drug information. Dr. Krysiak is also involved with the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) and has established a student chapter at her campus. Resources Mentioned in this Podcast: 1.
