Whether steeped in history or conjured from fantasy, these cinematic castles and palaces have left a lasting impression on audiences.1. The Imperial Palace – The Last Emperor (1987)The Forbidden City in Beijing serves as the breathtaking backdrop for Bernardo Bertolucci's historical masterpiece. Its grandeur reflects the isolation and opulence of the young emperor's life. 2. Hogwarts – Harry Potter Series (2001-2011)A magical castle rather than a traditional palace, but let's be honest—Hogwarts is as grand and majestic as any royal residence.3. The Grand Budapest Hotel – The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)Though fictional, its lavish design and color palette make it one of the most memorable cinematic palaces. (Ed: is it though?)4. The Castle in the Sky – Castle in the Sky (1986)Studio Ghibli's floating fortress, Laputa, is an awe-inspiring mix of magic, history, and mystery. It serves as both a relic of the past and a symbol of lost power, perfectly embodying the themes of the film.5. The Palace of Agrabah – Aladdin (1992 & 2019)Disney's shimmering golden palace, home to the Sultan and Princess Jasmine, captures the magic and adventure of the Arabian Nights. Its lavish domes and sprawling gardens make it one of the most iconic palaces in animation.Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Princess Mononoke is an epic that blends mythology, environmental themes, and breathtaking animation into a powerful tale of conflict and coexistence. The story follows Ashitaka, a young prince cursed by a demon after defending his village. Seeking a cure, he embarks on a journey that leads him to a battle between humans, led by the ambitious Lady Eboshi, and the spirits of the forest, including the fierce warrior Princess Mononoke (San). While darker and more mature than some of Ghibli's other films, Princess Mononoke is a masterpiece that older kids and adults can appreciate for its depth and emotional weight. For younger viewers, Sofia the First offers a charming introduction to the world of princesses and magic, wrapped in fun adventures and valuable life lessons.Sofia, an ordinary girl, becomes royalty overnight when her mother marries the king. As she navigates palace life, she learns about kindness, responsibility, and courage—often with the help of magical amulets and familiar Disney princesses. From grand palaces to mystical forests, this episode celebrates the magic and wonder of cinema's most enchanting worlds. So grab your crown, saddle up your wolf, and join us for a royal adventure!

Science fiction literature has a rich and fascinating history, spanning centuries and influencing countless minds. Let's embark on a journey through its key moments:Early Precursors:1726: “Gulliver's Travels” by Jonathan Swift: This satirical travel narrative is considered a precursor to modern science fiction. Lemuel Gulliver encounters utopian and dystopian societies during his voyages, including the flying island of Laputa, where scientists conduct experiments with no practical benefit1.1818: “Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus” by Mary Shelley: Shelley's cautionary tale of Victor Frankenstein's monstrous experiment is a warning against unchecked scientific ambition. It challenges the expansion of science without moral context, shocking readers in the deeply religious pre-Victorian era1.Exploration and Adventure:1870: “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” by Jules Verne: Verne's adventure novel introduces Captain Nemo and his undersea adventures on the Nautilus. It inspires real scientific development, including ideas for diving equipment and submarines. Verne's work becomes a forerunner of technology drawing inspiration from science fiction1.Time Travel and Evolution:Late 19th Century: Amid technological advancements (steam engines, telephones, electricity), H.G. Wells introduces the concept of time travel in “The Time Machine”. This novella fuses science journalism with popular romance, anticipating humanity's evolution and the end of our species1.Golden Age and Beyond:1950s: The Golden Age of science fiction sees prolific writers like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert A. Heinlein. Their works elevate science fiction to serious literature2.New Wave: Emerging in the mid-20th century, the New Wave genre incorporates innovative ideas, themes, and styles. It challenges conventions and expands the boundaries of science fiction3.Modern Landscape:Science fiction continues to thrive across mediums—books, movies, and television. Authors explore post-apocalyptic scenarios, alien encounters, robotics, and environmental crises.Today, science fiction remains a powerful lens through which we examine our world, imagine the future, and grapple with ethical dilemmas. In summary, science fiction literature has evolved from satirical beginnings to a genre that shapes our understanding of science, society, and our own humanity.

Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's second Countdown miniseries on 2023, a podcast first focusing entirely on the works of Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki: the Miyazaki Countdown. To honor one of the living legends of animation, the countdown crew of Scott, Scott, and Jay will watch all 11 of Miyazaki's films to-date, rewinding all the way back to his directorial origins with 1979's action-adventure heist thriller LUPIN III: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO, all the way to his then-final film, 2013's biographical epic romance drama, THE WIND RISES. Join us each week over the next 11 weeks, as we build up to what is Miyazaki's self-proclaimed now-final film (we'll see...), the fantasy epic, THE BOY AND THE HERON. In Part 3 of the Miyazaki Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay discuss Hayao Miyazaki's first official Studio Ghibli film: the 1986 fantasy adventure anime film, CASTLE IN THE SKY. Written and directed by the Japanese master, CASTLE IN THE SKY immediately thrusts viewers into the action, as a gang of air pirates led by a woman named Dola infiltrate a government airship carrying a prisoner aboard named Sheeta. Dola's gang incapacitates Sheeta's handler, a government operative named Muska, but in an attempt to escape capture, Sheeta falls off the side of the airship. In midair, however, the precious crystal Dola's gang was attempting to steal activates and slows Sheeta's fall, until she gently lands in the arms of Pazu, a young local miner, who takes her to his home for her to rest and recover. The next day, as Sheeta and Pazu get to know each other and their shared connection to a mysterious floating city in the sky called Laputa, Dola's gang arrives at their doorstep and pursues them, with the military in toe, led by Muska. It's a race to recapture Sheeta and find out exactly what her mysterious crystal's powers are and whether they ultimately lead to the fabled castle in the sky. The countdown crew share their thoughts on Miyazaki's third outing, how he continues to set a standard for the genres he explores, and the particular magic of his template for fantasy-adventure.
Kim and Elwood continue their re-evaluation of the filmography of Hayao Miyazaki with Castle In The Sky in which Sheeta an orphan abducted by the government agent Muska might hold the key to finding Laputa the mythical castle in the sky as she teams up Pazu and a group of sky pirates to find it.
In addition to being an Anglican priest, Jonathan Swift had a special gift for satire. "Satire," he wrote “is a sort of glass wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind reception it meets with in the world, and that so very few are offended with it.” Writing amid the scientific and technological advancements of the early 1700s, Swift was less than convinced that the progress was actually progress and in Gulliver's Travels he included a voyage to the flying island of Laputa where science and technology come under his satirical gaze. Dr. Tiffany Schubert gave this introduction to Gulliver's adventures on Laputa.
