Today we're highlighting two fireside chats from the Newcomer Banking Summit on March 14. First up is Mercury CEO Immad Akhund. He talked about how the Silicon Valley Bank crisis sent customers rushing to his digital banking service. He pitched a world where software — not human bankers — solve most of customers' problems. Akhund told me, “My experience with relationship banking was I need to send a wire and I literally cannot figure out to do it, please help me. Which to me never felt like a relationship, it felt very transactional and painful — and with Mercury you don't have to do that.” Mercury is limited by the fact that it is not a bank — it's a software company on top of banking partners — at a time when regulators are looking closely at how banks work with fintech partners. We concluded our summit with Jackie Reses — who was a top executive at Square before leaving to buy a bank. Reses is the CEO of Lead Bank, a regional Kansas City bank that still serves local customers but has built an onramp for financial technology companies to connect with the banking system.“The thing I saw at Square — which I consider to be a very strong, innovative fintech — is that owning a bank and operating a bank is a 10X delta in understanding compliance to working in a tech company,” Reses said. At Square, Reses said, she learned to “appreciate the complexity of what it takes to do this, so that we could learn how to serve our clients better and help them scale — but make sure we never put ourselves in the position to risk the relationship that we have operating with our regulators.”You can give the episodes a listen or watch them on YouTube. Also: The Future of Banking with Rho, Jiko, and RippleIn case you missed it, we've posted another panel with three fintech/banking leaders. Rho CEO Everett Cook, Jiko CEO Stephane Lintner, and Ripple President Monica Long are all trying to solve shortcomings in the legacy banking system, with different approaches. He graduated from Caltech with a PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics and holds degrees in Machine Learning and Computer Science from the Ecole Normale Superieure in France. Stephane Lintner is Co-Founder & CEO of Jiko, a new take on the money storage and transaction layer in banking, a.k.a. checking accounts and cash management. Jiko was founded in 2016 with the mission of providing consumers and businesses with direct access to spendable T-Bills, combining all the benefits of checking accounts with the safety and, depending on the economic cycle, yield of treasuries. Jiko has raised $89m according to Crunchbase, including $40m in October. Jiko offers accounts directly to consumers via an app and to corporates and platforms via API. Jiko owns and operates an OCC-chartered national bank, which it acquired in 2020, and a registered broker-dealer. In this conversation, Stephane and I discuss Jiko's concept and ultimate vision, the implications for the existing banking model, Jiko's successful bank acquisition, the relationship with adjacencies like stablecoins and CBDCs, and more. Thank you very much for joining us today. Please welcome, Stephane Lintner

The way the basic checking account is constructed has not changed in decades. Your money is kept on a bank’s balance sheet and the bank lends this money out and they make money on the spread. Get ready to contemplate the nature of reality this week with Julia and Victoria and special guest Reidlee Lynn as we read A Tale For the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki, the author’s award-winning third novel about two women on different continents in different times connected by a single story. Follow along as they discuss their theories on what happened to Nao, empathize with the characters’ struggle against existence, and marvel at Jiko the 104-year-old Buddhist nun. Also Julia manages to explain the concept of non-duality on the fly, so she’s pretty proud of that.

What is jiko sekinin? Thanks for asking!Jiko sekinin is a Japanese term which more or less translates as “individual responsibility”. It’s more than just an expression. It represents a culture or even ideology of duty and guilt in the Land of the Rising Sun. Rather than attracting pity, the likes of homeless people, the chronically ill and even hostages are considered responsible for what happens to them. What’s more, they are expected to simply accept their fate and deal with it.Is jiko sekinin a recent phenomenon? The values of independence and individual merit have long been rooted in Japanese history and culture. But Jiko Sekinin is actually a relatively recent phenomenon, dating back to around the mid-1990s. Experts have traced its origins back to the crippling recession of the late 90s and the rise of neoliberalism. At the time, government officials blamed the country’s economic problems on its social system, which was seen as overly generous and egalitarian. They believed the road to recovery should be based on jiko sekinin and efforts to achieve individual success. This would lead to a more competitive, creative and healthy society. Does anyone actually support the idea? Has the coronavirus pandemic made jiko sekinin more apparent in Japan or in other countries? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Subscribe and listen to this episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, GooglePlay, or iHeartRadio! Today, we are discussing your listener questions all about Walt Disney World! What are not-to-be-missed adult experiences at Walt Disney World? I discussed with Lou Mongello on WDW Radio Episode #557 the top 10 overlooked experiences for adults, inside and outside of Walt Disney World. Definitely check that out for great suggestions for adult experiences. One of my absolute favorite adult experiences at Walt Disney World is the Wanyama Safari. This wonderful experience at Animal Kingdom Lodge includes an intimate tour of the savannas and a delicious Jiko dinner. I wrote a detailed review of the Wanyama Safari here. Special dining is another great adult experience. I discuss dinner at EPCOT’s Takumi-Tei and Le Cellier. Backstage tours are a fun adult experience. There are many to choose from around all the Walt Disney World parks, each offering a different topic and view of behind-the-scenes activities. You can read about all the tour offerings here. What free activities can I do solo at Walt Disney World? Outside of the parks, there are several fun activities that I think are enjoyable to do solo. Animal Kingdom Lodge offers a culinary tour of the two Jambo House restaurants, Jiko and Boma. You can go to Disney Springs to take in the entertainment, do some window shopping, and enjoy some free samples. Take a boat ride from Disney Springs to resorts, or enjoy boat rides in other areas of Walt Disney World. Or go high on the Skyliner between EPCOT and Disney Hollywood Studios, and stop at a resort to explore. Inside the parks, enjoy the PlayDisney app for games and special effects throughout the parks. Play the interactive game, Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. Enjoy free entertainment in all the parks. At EPCOT, enjoy free performances at the amphitheater outside the American Adventure pavilion. What Walt Disney World restaurants are good for large groups? I highly recommend making advanced dining reservations for large groups whenever possible. Some of my favorite restaurants for large groups include Trails End at Wilderness Lodge, Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Biergarten in EPCOT’s Germany pavilion, Ale & Compass at the Yacht Club, Boatwright’s Dining Hall at Port Orleans Riverside, ‘Ohana at the Polynesian Village Resort, The Boathouse at Disney Springs, Jaleo at Disney Springs, Il Mulino at Walt Disney World Swan Hotel, and Todd English’s bluezoo at Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel. What quick service restaurants do you suggest? Dawn had a couple of questions about quick service restaurants, when she visits the parks in late August 2020. Her first question was which restaurant to go to near Spaceship Earth for a quick grab and go, before she and her family leave EPCOT and head to the Magic Kingdom. I recommended Sunshine Seasons in The Land pavilion, or to take the monorail to a resort before going to the Magic Kingdom. Dawn’s second question was about recommendations for the best quick service restaurants to use quick service dining plan credits. Recommendations included: Magic Kingdom: Be Our Guest or Columbia Harbour House. EPCOT: Sunshine Seasons, Pizza al Taglio (Italy), and Regal Eagle Smokehouse (American Adventure). Disney Hollywood Studios: ABC Commissary in hot weather, or Woody’s Lunch Box in cooler weather. Animal Kingdom: Flame Tree BBQ, Harambe Market, and Satu’li Canteen. Resorts: Contempo Cafe at the Contemporary Resort, Landscape of Flavors at Art of Animation Resort, The Mara at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Pepper Market at Coronado Springs, and Geyser Point at Wilderness Lodge. Disney Springs: D-Luxe Burger, Daily Poutine. Thank you for listening! I hope you found these listener questions and answers helpful for your future Disney trips or for some fun Disney daydreaming. There is not a bus option home from Epcot to the Contemporary. At the end of the night after Illuminations the line for the monorail is nuts, and that will still require a transfer at the TTC (also nuts). To avoid that mess, you can take a bus to the Wilderness Lodge and then wait just a moment and get on one of the busses dropping off from Hollywood studios or Animal Kingdom. They are shared with the Contemporary, which is the next stop. If staying at Bay Lake Tower, the bus stop is much closer than the monorail stop, too!” You might also consider exiting Epcot via the International Gateway, taking a bus from Beach Club to Magic Kingdom, and walking to Bay Lake Tower. Discussion of Cannabis-focused AI and the Jiko Automated Pre-roll Infusion Robot with serial entrepreneur Nohtal Partansky, Co-Founder and CEO of Sorting Robotics.Nohtal is also the Co-Founder and CEO of Rise Co-Packing, the premier automation-first co-packer for trimming, pre-rolls, & turn-key cannabis brand needs, and Inventor of Jiko Joints, the first robotically infused badder cannabis pre-rolls currently available in 15 dispensaries across California.Nohtal Partansky, Co-Founder and CEO of Sorting Robotics, an industrial cannabis-focused AI and computer vision technologies company, is a serial entrepreneur and former NASA-JPL engineer. During his time at NASA-JPL, Nohtal was assigned to a project called the Mars Oxygen In Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE), and the mission to develop a device that can take in the atmosphere of Mars and produce oxygen for people to breathe was successfully accomplished. After leaving NASA-JPL, Nohtal immediately founded Sorting Robotics with his two co-founders, Cassio Dos Santos Jr. and Sean Lawlor. In 4 short years, Nohtal has led Sorting Robotics in building new innovative equipment for cannabis manufacturers and vertically integrated brands. While building Sorting Robotics, Nohtal witnessed first hand how the lack of automation in the cannabis industry creates inefficiencies that degrade the smooth operation of the value chain and diminish profit margins. Today, Sorting Robotics is solving those problems with AI-driven machines deployed across multiple states and in Canada. Nohtal is also the Co-Founder and CEO of Rise Co-Packing, the premier automation-first co-packer for trimming, pre-rolls, & turn-key cannabis brand needs, and Inventor of Jiko Joints, the first robotically infused badder cannabis pre-rolls currently available in 15 dispensaries across California.
