This November, as we remember our beloved dead and our liturgy begins to contemplate the end times, the stark reality of war is even more pronounced. In times, like these, “sometimes, the best thing you can do,” says Bruce Botha, S.J., “is acknowledge someone else's pain and say, ‘I can't imagine how you're feeling.'” Father Botha, a priest of the Southern Africa province of the Jesuits, has been in parish ministry for the last 15 years. He serves as the pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and chaplain for two universities in Johannesburg, South Africa. Previously, he worked at St. Martin de Porres, a Jesuit-run parish in Soweto, “a historic township,“ he says, which was “the epicenter of a lot of the anti-apartheid struggle.” The parish is a stone's throw from the world-famous Vilakazi Street, which he reminds, has “the homes of two Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in it: Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.” On “Preach” this week, host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., engages Bruce on the challenges of preaching in fearful, uncertain times of COVID and war, and at intimate moments of personal grief, like funerals. Clothes Less Traveled began as a small storefront on Huddleston Road. MaryAnn Cox and Joan Velsmid needed a place to sell the merchandise arriving at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The solution? Open up the first nonprofit thrift shop in Peachtree City, named “The Clothes Less Traveled” by Janet McGregor Dunn! Clothes Less Traveled expanded three times at the Huddleston location, but continued to outgrow the space. In 2006 we moved to our current location on Hwy 74. After a few years we expanded to a 25,000 square foot store selling quality donated goods at reasonable prices. Since opening, our goal has been the same: to empower change in our community by giving away our profits in the form of grants to local charities, as well as scholarships. Thanks to our generous donors, faithful volunteers, and loyal shoppers, we have been able to give away more than $7.5 million to over 100 local nonprofits! In reply Jesus said: "Tell John what you hear and see: the blind recover their sight, cripples walk, lepers are cured, and the poor have good news preached to them..." LK 3:10 Third Week of Advent O Jesus, I rejoice at the signs that say you are near. Your power is everywhere if I could see it. Yet my eyes often see only darkness and what has yet to be done. I believe in you, yet when I look around evil seems so strong and goodness so weak. If you have come, why is there still so much suffering and why do the poor still despair? Where are your miracles today? Your grace, O Lord, is more fruitful in my world than I imagine. I know your power is everywhere around me, if I could only see it. Show me today where the blind see and cripples walk. Make my vision sharper than it is. From Christmas Prayers and Customs: Christmas Classics, Edited by Rev. Victor Hoagland, C.P., The Regina Press New York. Passionist Missionaries 1997 A Prayer Before Reading Sacred Scripture: Lord, inspire us to read your Sacred Scriptures and to meditate upon them day and night. We beg you give us real understanding of what we need, that we in turn may put its precepts into practice. Yet we know that understanding and good intentions are worthless, unless rooted in your graceful love. So we ask that the words of Scripture may also be not just signs on a page, but channels of grace into our hearts. My spirit within has grown tired and you, my God, seem far away. How can I hear your voice today? Speak to my heart during this season of grace, as you spoke to your prophets and saints. Remind me again of the journey you call me to make and the work you would have me do. I am your servant, O Lord. Speak to me in this holy season and turn my eyes to watch for your coming. O Emmanuel, Jesus Christ, desire of every nation, Savior of all peoples, come and dwell among us. From Christmas Prayers and Customs: Christmas Classics, Edited by Rev. What would it mean to approach Advent with a sense of longing, rather than wanting or demanding? That's the question posed by Roc O'Connor S.J., of the famed St. Louis Jesuits. And the Christmas carol that seems to best encapsulate this holy longing is “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” It's one of the oldest carols in circulation, with a text that dates back to the 8th century. To uncover the story of this ancient hymn, we're joined by Cameron Upchurch, chapel organist and Director of Music at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Special thanks to the Ignatian Schola and to Salt of the Sound (and their record label Echoes Blue Music), for their recordings of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel;” to Frank Tuson for providing instrumental accompaniment to the Schola; and to Cameron Upchurch, Frank Tuson and Ricardo da Silva for vocals on this episode. Along with the uncertainty it brings, there are the day-to-day concerns of how to get back and forth to treatment or combatting the loneliness that can come with the disease. Hope Heals is a service offered by Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Westfield to provide help with some of those concerns. Cranford Radio spoke with Patricia Martin, director of Hope Heals, as well as Deacon Keith Gibbons, the assistant director, about what Hope Heals is all about.

There's a series of Star Wars books called From A Certain Point of View. Two have been released to date, each to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, respectively. Each book contains 40 short stories from 40 different authors assuming the perspective of 40 different, minor characters from those classic films. The whole idea is to give readers a new glimpse into an old story—to retell that classic tale “from a certain point of view.” The Ignatian Year—this anniversary celebration of St. Ignatius' conversion in which we find ourselves—invites us to “see all things new in Christ.” We're invited to contemplate St. Ignatius' story in new ways, to look upon his conversion and his legacy with the eyes of Christ—and then to turn that same gaze on ourselves, our own lives. How is Christ using Ignatius' story to inform and inspire our own? For those of you who have read St. Ignatius' autobiography, you know that the pages are full of minor characters—women and men who cross Ignatius' path ever so briefly and yet leave behind a profound impact. Here at the Jesuit Conference, we thought one way to consider Ignatius' story anew would be to explore the perspectives of these other characters: how they saw Ignatius, what they were thinking about as they encountered saint. It's still the story of St. Ignatius—from a certain point of view. And so, we invited authors to submit their stories. And today, I'm really excited to share the work of two authors—and my conversations with them. The first of our authors is Ryan Carroll, a PhD student in English and Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He is a longtime enthusiast of Ignatian spirituality, having first become involved through the Ignatian Spirituality Ministry at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. His story is titled, “The Pilgrim's Book,” and it's an extended meditation on the life of the book itself—the book that stirred Ignatius' own conversion. Our second author is John Dougherty, is a Catholic writer and campus minister with over a decade of experience in Jesuit education. His work has appeared in America Magazine and Millennial Journal. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and children. His story, “The Provincial and the Pilgrim,” puts us in the shoes of the Franciscan friar responsible for turning Ignatius away when the would-be saint sought to live and work in Jerusalem. Both stories are beautiful opportunities to pray with the story of St. Ignatius, to “see all things new in Christ.” You can read these stories at Jesuits.org/pilgrim-stories – or, click on the link in the notes.

Mark Husey, also a member of the Long Beach Chapter, wasn't expecting to be a guest on the LA AGO Podcast so soon, but his Labor Day post on Facebook entitled "Mark Husey's 668 Words on Labor Day" caught the attention of host Thompson Howell and changed that. Mark shares his reflections with Thompson about the Covid-19 pandemic, its impact on creative people of all types and the existential questions it has raised all while still keeping an eye out for those "silver lining" moments. You'll also hear Mark's "Origin Story" including his time growing up in rural Harford County, Maryland; his earliest memory of the organ and the Anglican choral tradition as heard through a black and white TV; how he got to play a pipe organ for the first time in Bel Air (no, not THAT Bel Air); his appreciation for his passionate public school music teachers; the significance of the book "Popes Through The Ages"; his thoughts on being an out, gay, Catholic musician; his time at St. Peter's Church in Columbia, SC and how Mark became a "YouTuber"; his fond memories of his most recent position at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in San Pedro, CA; and so much more!SPECIAL NOTE: We regret to share the news that previous LA AGO Podcast guest Emily Holzer has passed.
