How do we stay steady when we need it most?In this episode of Gather At The Well, Lindsey explores what it means to hold fast — to your values, your purpose, and your inner knowing. Through grounding somatic practices, personal reflections, and the rhythms that keep her team at The Teaching Well aligned, she offers a framework for leading with clarity and care. This episode is full of tools to help you slow down, tune inward, and lead from a place of steadiness. You'll walk away with:
It's all about the things. We equate the Pentacles suit with the element of Earth and maybe winter. They refer to money, tangible items, and your home. Cast your mind forward, right to the end of your life. Are you:A. Riddled with disease, dependent on minimum wage workers at the local care facility (which you've paid for with your house, super and pension) eating Deb mashed potato out of a tray… or;B. Gorgeously wrinkled, surrounded by loving kids and grandkids you can still lift on your shoulders and hitting Nando's with your mates from Mahjong. If you chose option A, you're in luck. That's the way most of us will go. But if you're in camp B - you'll want to tune into today's episode of Next Of Kin. In it, biohacker and longevity strategist Nick Engerer and I discuss how to increase not just our lifespan but our healthspan (read: more yay, less tray), and the fact that we're spending a whole lot of our hard-earned cash on staying healthy and well. In fact, Forbes reckons the global health and wellness market is estimated to grow to a staggering US$13 trillion by 2031. So my question is, with a booming wellness market… why aren't we more well? Most people go straight to spending money to make changes. You've got the right motivation - you want to be healthier, you want to live longer, you want to make a change - great! But that change is not made by purchasing something. That's the biggest mistake people make. Nick EngererSo if, like me, you want to age as gracefully as an elderly ballerina - with skin that looks perpetually pulled into a bun and enough upper body strength to haul your own suitcase on your frequent travels - you're in for a treat. Oh, and all those skincare products you keep After Pay-ing? You might wanna rethink those. Sneak peek here… In the episode, we explore: * [02:00] The incredible opportunity of aging - chronological, biological, aesthetic aging and more (and why your appearance is an asset you want to take care of)* [04:30] Body says gym, hair says party! The Bondi-fication of women's aging* [07:13] Introducing the longevity mindset* [12:00] Shifting focus from lifespan to healthspan: how to live better for longer * [15:42] Say goodbye to health overwhelm and hello to your longevity strategy* [19:40] Your health dashboard. Need-to-know data and how to capture it* [24:15] Lost, miserable, exhausted - how journalling can help us track what's working, what isn't and even pipe down our inner critic * [29:00] Test and measure, test and measure. How you are (probably) already biohacking in your own life… * [32:00] Longevity technologies - how Nick and his company A Longer Life works out what products to try (and where we can all save our $)* [36:50] Questions to ask before you ‘add to cart' (asking for a friend who keeps getting served hormone-balancing menopause ads)

The best content creators on the planet have what Maven's Wes Kao calls a "Spiky Point of View." A spiky point of view can be the one thing that separates you from all the other content clutter out there. According to Wes: A spiky point of view can be debated. A spiky point of view isn't controversial for the sake of it. A spiky point of view teaches your audience something relevant they don't already know. A spiky point of view is rooted in evidence, but it doesn't have to be a proven fact or universal truth. A spiky point of view requires conviction. Now is a great time to find you spiky point of view. Done right, this is something you can build your business upon. In other words, if you are going to create something like a Blazing Saddles, you better be willing to beat up the old lady, punch a horse, and annihilate the fourth wall. This past Saturday was SBS (Small Business Saturday) in Trenton, NJ. Tracey and CJ discuss the value they bring to the table with Street StartUps and ReEntry Ventures. The guys are also gearing up for a very special graduation ceremony on Saturday, December 7 at Mercer County Community College located at 102 North Broad Street. The event starts at 10:00am and it's FREE! Homework: Find some entrepreneurs in your community, support them, and spread the word of its importance!
Homework: Find a way to do one thing to contribute to open source without writing any code!Henry Zhu's transition from a programing role to a more managerial role as Babel's maintainer has been hard. As programmers, we tend to value our work based on the number of commits or pushing features. When you are a manager, you're not writing much code anymore. There's still an expectation that maintainers should be writing code. Still, maintainers also have to triage and merge things, release process, onboard, market, write documentation, test, make videos, and give talks. Because of all this, a maintainer's time is best spent figuring out how to get more people involved with a project. To get people interested, the maintainer has to do the job of showing people what's possible. You have to be involved in the community, and you have to like it. At a fundamental level, open-source is about service, serving other people in the community, giving back, and not expecting anything in return.Transcript"Henry Zhu Chats With Kent About The Responsibilities Of A Maintainer" TranscriptResourcesAll Contributors SourceMaintainers AnonymousChesterton's fenceHenry ZhuTwitterGithubWebsiteKent C. In this episode, we show you how to turn your fear into health, wealth, and happiness. If you want something you’ve never had before, you have to do something you’ve never done before. That means suffering and taking risks. Building a positive relationship with suffering is one of the most important life skills you can master. Suffering is the true training ground of self-transcendence. With our guest Akshay Nanavati we show you how to choose your struggle and build meaningful suffering into your life. Akshay Nanavati is a Marine Corps Veteran, speaker, adventurer, entrepreneur and author of "Fearvana: The Revolutionary Science of How to Turn Fear into Health, Wealth and Happiness." He is also the founder of the nonprofit, the Fearvana Foundation. His work has been featured in Forbes, Psychology Today, entrepreneur.com, CNN, Huffington Post, Military Times, FOX 5 NY, ABC, NBC and other media outlets around the globe. From drug addiction to marine corps Bootcamp - to hunting for bombs in Iraq - how Akshay learned to deal with fear The toughest battle Akshay had to fight was coming home - dealing with PTSD and suicidal thoughts We live in a world that demonizes stress, anxiety, fear, pain and suffering - and yet in the psychology and neuroscience research shows us that our emotions are normal and inevitable We don’t live in a world of life-threatening risks anymore, and so our brain creates these risks No emotions are good or bad - we assign and create the meaning via our beliefs Humans are meaning-making machines - we naturally create meaning out of everything What you are labeling yourself can powerfully shape your experiences. Typical behaviors like “depression” “PTSD” etc are just brain patterns, and they can be re-written using “Top-Down Neuroplasticity” Don’t wait for the fear to go away, act despite the fear.. or once you learn to train yourself.. BECAUSE of the fear Building a positive relationship to suffering is the single most important skill to master. “Hebbs Law” - neurons that fire together, wire together There is a war in your brain for neuronal real estate - use it or lose it. Should you try to SEEK Suffering instead of AVOID suffering? "There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” - Dr. Carl Jung “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” - Dr. Carl Jung Visualize yourself in the process of going through the struggle, the suffering, the tough part of your goals - not the easy parts at the end. There is tremendous beauty in pushing through and into your fears. Everything worthwhile is hard, and you have to train yourself to fall in love with suffering. Fall in love with the process. You cannot get better at something without doing it. Exercise is a “miracle grow for your brain.” If you could put all the benefits of exercise into a pill, it would be the best selling pill of all time. If you want something you’ve never had before, you have to do something you’ve never done before. That means suffering and taking a risk. If you don’t proactively search out a proactive worthy challenge - something to struggle and suffer for in your life - then suffering will find you anyway. Don’t follow your passion, find your "worthy struggle." You don’t discover a passion you develop a passion. You have to put yourself in uncomfortable situations to develop your passion. You only evolve when you suffer. That’s why lottery winners typically lose their winnings. When you struggle for it, you become a different person. Homework: Find one little thing to test yourself. Do a little thing to push yourself outside your comfort zone. Don’t just do it, come back and reflect on it. Journal about it.
Physical therapy; many of you have had it after an injury or surgery. Typically, your doctor prescribes it and your insurance dictates who you can see and how many sessions you may have. What you really want, or need isn’t necessarily factored in. Kristin Thomas, Physical Therapist and owner of Core Wellness and Physical Therapy, believes in a different, more holistic approach focused on becoming aware of the interconnectedness of the different parts of the body.Patients come to her for help after being injured or when a minor condition has finally deteriorated into a painful problem that impacts their functionality. During hour-long sessions she conducts a thorough assessment of their injury or condition and looks at how pain is impacting their entire body. The area you are experiencing pain is just the tip of the iceberg. By evaluating your whole body, she figures out what is the “Boss” or main issue that has escalated into your current problems. If there are head to toe issues, she looks at posture. Then she starts treatment with the “Boss” and moves on to other areas as needed. You don’t have to have had surgery, been in an accident or had a recent injury to utilize physical therapy. Starting treatment when you have small issues can keep things from turning into big issues.Myofascial release:The body is connected on a cellular level by fascia. “It is that tough, connective tissue that runs throughout your entire body and surrounds and infuses every part of your body including your bones, arteries, spinal cord, nerves, organs and cells. It has no beginning and no end, so if one part of it tightens, it can cause pain in another part of the body”.Practicing myofascial release on specific areas of the fascia can “open up” or relieve issues in other parts of the body, lessening or eliminating pain and restoring movement.Dry needling:Dry needling is a technique where “specially trained physical therapists insert a thin filament needle into the muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point to break up restrictions that could be causing the pain and limiting your motion”. It is not the same as acupuncture despite the fact that it also involves inserting needles.Process for relief of pain.-Start with physical therapy. Build your strength back up, get flexible and open your fascial system. That may not be the complete answer, but it is a good first step. If they can get things opened up it can help with rehab later.-Evaluate: Are things are getting better? If not try an orthopedic doctor or chiropractor.-Evaluate your posture and habitual movements so surgery, if needed, will help. Surgery alone isn’t enough if you don’t change bad habits.-Watch for small things before they become big things.Journal Questions:Have you had any past injuries worth investigating?Do you have anything that currently bothers you… be it a nuisance or debilitating? What are you feelings about trying physical therapy? What are your barriers to getting an appointment on the calendar?Homework:Find a quiet place where you can tune into your body and become aware of what it is trying to tell you. Relax and breath slowly. Notice which areas are tight or uncomfortable. Breath and put intention into the areas that are bothering you to calm them down. Regularly practice awareness to stay tuned into your body.Goal setting will always be part of your homework. Once a week write down your focus or goals for the week. Every Friday reassess them, tweak them or change them to fit your needs. Have you ever started eating a certain way or training a certain way only to be derailed because you didn’t think you were doing it right? If a training plan has specific times and amounts and you miss one or two, do you give it up and go back to your couch. If a particular diet plan seems perfect, except that it says you have to eat brussels sprouts and you can have no chocolate, do you give it up and eat whatever you want? We tend to think that we have to do things perfectly or not at all.Today’s podcast introduces someone who defies that belief. She is an amazing, inspiring woman who is always fighting to be the best version of herself; pulling others along on her journey, to also be the best that they can be! Best of all, she is my mom! She is my constant cheerleader and forever positivity coach (not that I knew that growing up). She always taught me that if I was ever in a situation where I wasn’t happy… then change my situation. She believes that diet and fitness plans are a starting point. It is ok to tweak things to our liking or our needs if it is the difference between sticking with it or falling away. She found an eating plan that was giving her the results she wanted but was so strict she wouldn’t keep it up. Once she changed parts of it to fit who she was, while still keeping the core benefits, she found a “plan” that worked for her and was sustainable. But she wanted a label that described her so she rewrote the original one to fit her. Meet my mom, Kathy, a ”Wine loving Vegan with seafood exceptions”!Being healthy, without taking medications was the “Why” behind her food choices. Although thankful that medication is available if it is necessary for your health, she hoped to get the same benefits through an eating plan to avoid the many side effects of medicines. Her determination has proven effective for her and the benefits have spread to family and friends as they try her new recipes and join in making some of the small changes they learn.Homework:Find a new, healthy recipe that satisfies your needs and that you family likes. Write it down. Next week find another one and write it down too. Do this for several months and you will have a go-to list of favorites that you can count on, whenever you don’t know what to make.Goal setting will always be part of your homework. Once a week write down your focus or goals for the week. Every Friday reassess them, tweak them or change them to fit your needs. Scripture: Matthew 5:1-5 Homework: Find your power. Claim your power. Then, keep it under control. All month, we are reclaiming the power to dream. As we are all part of Thad's, practice completing the phrase, "I dream Thad's will..." in a way that seeks the kingdom first. What is your dream? Have a great week!
Scripture: Mark 9:33-50 Homework: Find rest in your week. Make it a dedicated time when you can set aside any distractions and live into the restorative potential of solitude.
Organic Organic is not a new thing. It's not a marketing buzz word. It turns out it's a really strict thing to use the word. It's regulated by governments that have set up rules about what a product can't have, must have and it can't cheat. It's a long road to get a product labeled as organic and once it's labeled this way it's inspected to make sure it actually really is what it's supposed to be. Homework: Find an organic beer or other product and try it out. Hosts: John Foster and Motor Guests: Ronald Silberstein and Brenden Dobel from Thirsty Bear in San Francisco. Belgium 101 Belgium is a wonderful place for beer. There are many styles from that country. Many of which are not always accessible to the American style beer drinker from a palette point of view. Belgium beers don't follow marketing trends that "large beer factories" making labels that look uninviting. Homework: Find a Lambic of some sort like a lindemans Pêche, Pomme, or Framboise. Notice the sour quality. Don't forget a trippel. Or find a Belgium beer of some sort. Special guests: Steve who is half of Steve and Justine. Surviving a Beer Festival 7/08/07 Beer festivals are a fun way to learn about different beers. A fest can be a lot of fun but it takes some preparation on your part to get the most out of them. Before you show up do a quick internet search so you know the details of the event. Be sure to drink water, eat food, wear sun screen and have a plan to get home. You feel obligated to drink the beer that you don't like. Don't follow the crowd. Taste to remember. Take notes about the beers you are drinking. Get the shirt if it's cool. Leave glassware behind. Take lots of pictures. Hi Gene. Homework: Find a festival and go to it. Bonus home work! Volunteer to help pour beer at your local festival. Even more homework: Throw your own beer festival in your back yard. Thanks for listening! Ali Fisher, editor at Tor Books and member of the podcast Rude Tales of Magic, joins us for a three-part series on editing. First up: length! How do you edit your work—whether it's a book or a short story or a novella? Maybe you wrote a draft during NaNoWriMo, maybe you didn't-- either way, we want to help you figure out how to make your writing the perfect length. Homework: Find two scenes next to each other from your writing. Remove the scene break and write bridging text between the two of them instead. Then, find a different scene that has that bridging text, and cut it into two different scenes so that you are removing it and creating new signposts. See what this does to length and your perception of the pacing.
