Perry Williams is a retired NFL Player and two-time Super Bowl Champion. He's also a keynote speaker and the Director of Sports Management at Long Island University (LIU). On a team of stars, Perry Williams was an unsung hero and silent leader of the New York Giants Football team for 11 seasons (1983-1994). He was the starting right cornerback for one of the most storied and dynamic defenses in NFL history, culminating with two NFL Super Bowl Championships (1986-1987) and (1990-1991). Impressively, Perry holds the record for the most games played as a defensive back (corner) in the history of the Giants—a testament to his dedication and consistency.  Perry's greatest accomplishment as a New York Giant was not his all-pro honors or Super Bowl championships, but rather, that he was a benefactor and now a director of outreach programs for the New York Giants Degree Completion Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, which has since become the model adopted by the NFL and its member teams for the benefit of its players.  During his professional football career off-season, Perry earned a Criminal Justice/Sociology Bachelor of Arts degree from North Carolina State University and a Master of Public Administration degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. This is a feat that is virtually unheard of in the lucrative world of professional sports. Perry is a highly sought-after motivational speaker that has been invited to work with companies like Exxon/Mobil, Starbucks, IBM, UPS, and Verizon Wireless. He has lectured at hundreds of Schools, Colleges, and Universities as well as other respected organizations such as the United Way Foundation. Listen in for some great takeaways about Perry's journey as a two-time Super Bowl Champion and how preparing for life after football has allowed him to be a champion both on and off the field. Allowing artists to live out their creativity is vital to their art.  [22:00] Perry and Rain discuss forgiveness, redemption, and peace.  [25:03] Kindness over competition in art and why it's important.  [28:15] Impactful shows aren't decided by the number of the crowd, but the energy and passion and creative spin that the artist or band brings to the stage.  [37:50] Perry shares his creative process and involvement in events and projects. KEY TAKEAWAYS:  As artists, we just don't know how one little thing that we do creatively or that anyone does in our waking life affects someone else.  Strive for originality.  You don't want to be the 25th person copying a musical legend.  You want to create something original so that it really resonates with people.  A band can play for half a million people one night and fifty people the next night and still put on a unique and impactful show. BIO:   Over the last several decades, esteemed singer, songwriter, and philanthropist Perry Farrell has revolutionized alternative music, underground culture, and the modern festival experience. With the seminal alt-rock outfit Jane's Addiction Farrell created his own fusion of ‘70s psychedelia, metal, ‘80s new wave, punk, and proto-grunge; it established the band as the vanguard of what Farrell would hail as “the alternative nation.” The Farrell-fronted group earned an MTV Video Music Award for Best Alternative Video (“Been Caught Stealing”), cracked the top spot-on Billboard's “Alternative” chart, and defined a generation. As a style icon, Farrell's gender-fluid “nothing's shocking” persona made him an aesthetic lodestar of the moment and multiple generations to follow. He founded Lollapalooza in 1991, the most influential American music festival since Woodstock, and remains at the helm of the event 30 years later. But that was merely the beginning. The New York and Florida-raised, Los Angeles-based artist has become undoubtedly one of the most consequential artists on earth. Currently, Jane's Addiction is planning a return to action. Additionally, for the first time in nearly a quarter century, Porno for Pyros will be releasing new music.  But at the spiritual essence of his being Farrell is most dedicated to two things: his family and his philanthropic work. In 2001, he helped to free people in South Sudan from human bondage, raised money for the homeless in Los Angeles, and physically removed debris in the 9th Ward of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina; he's canvassed for charities helping to treat young people for addiction, and met with British Prime Minister Tony Blair to discuss climate change. Farrell's most emphatic hope is to help affect peace in the Middle East through the universal language of music and festivals. Ultimately, his art and work are a vessel to help both the individual and the collective world mend. Perry Farrell is a perpetual revolution. “Kratom feels like an opiate, you get strong feelings similar to opiates.'” -Perry Today, Ben and I are talking to Perry, a 24-year-old from Maryland and started smoking marijuana at age 16. He lost everything that he owned and had to drug and alcohol abuse in a short period of time. We talk with Perry about his experience with Kratom and how it negatively affected his life. Kratom and Kava Kratom is sourced from an Asian variety of pine trees and works the same as an opiate drug in your body. Kratom is addictive and you easily get hooked. Kava is a root herb from the Polynesian islands that is not addictive and is mostly used by people for relaxation and sleep. In many states, Kratom is illegal because of its addictive side effects. In low doses, Kratom is a stimulant. In higher doses, it's a sedative. Perry's Experience with Kratom After taking Kratom, Perry quickly realized that this legal street drug has very similar physical and mental effects to opiate drugs. He thought he had found the answer to his addiction issue and felt he would be able to continually use Kratom without negative side effects. What he soon learned is that he could build tolerance and that Kratom has the same effect as addictive drugs. Press play to learn more about his compelling view of cancer and discover: How Perry's understanding of cancer might explain why stage four cancers are almost always impossible to treat Why the neo-Darwinian view of evolution and the inability to accept the idea of cellular cognition are major roadblocks to finding a cure for cancer What consequences result from the resistance to change in the medical industry While the idea that cancer is a genetic disease resulting from random DNA damage which triggers endless cell proliferation may be true, Perry Marshall doesn't think it gets to the essence of what cancer really is. According to him, cancer is when the cells of the body lose their identity and begin evolving or speciating out of control. Marshall says that when the simple laws of physics and chemistry are insufficient to explain everything that happens in the biological world, it leaves a giant elephant in the room that no one knows how to deal with. And in part, this could be why so many scientists, researchers, and doctors still fail to consider anything other than a narrow and restricted definition of cancer, cellular life, and evolution. “I think there are a lot of people who just don't want to understand it, or if it raises questions that blow [their] mind, then [they] just don't want to think about it,” says Marshall. He discusses James Shapiro's paper titled, “All Living Cells Are Cognitive”, in which Shapiro argues that, quite literally, ALL cells have cognition; they can also get stressed out, and then they do, they begin manifesting different behaviors until reaching a tipping point when they forget who they are.  And the result? Cancer. “Whether you're watching football players chase each other around the football field, or your dog chase a rabbit , or a YouTube video of white blood cells chasing germs, it all kind of looks the same…it is the same intentional behavior happening on radically different scales...” he says. In this episode, Esmie and Perry Maughmer discuss: How Perry learned to become self-sufficient at a young age. He took care of his sister with cerebral palsy and growing up in a small town.  Challenges of his adulthood: Job stability, fitting in, and showing empathy. The qualities of a good leader: Humility, emotional awareness, stewardship, showing others love and care. Challenges leaders must overcome: difficult conversations, controlling emotions, showing empathy and compassion. How great leaders grow and keep employees growing by learning more and teaching is okay to fail because you can grow after failure. Referrals and why good organizations do not struggle to hire good employees.   The right way to communicate with employees. Key Takeaways:  Success begins with caring for others. A true leader leaves things and situations better than how they were before. Great leaders teach others how to lead in whatever they do. They are compassionate and know how to love others, We can control our emotions by giving ourselves time to feel and acknowledge the feeling before we respond. Don't try to become a leader; get to know yourself and become the best version of who you truly are. Learn the benefits of failure to avoid being scared to try new things. A great business attracts great employees because people love to work for the company.  Face to face communication is best for sensitive or really important work conversations. People try to become someone else when they should become their best selves. Perry Maughmer Bio:I am focused on reinvigorating souls of relentless leaders because great work is never finished. I work best with malcontents and contrarians who strive to overcome their own bullshit in order to achieve meaningful goals. “I think everybody has the potential within them to be a leader if they so choose it. We have to dedicate the time and the effort along with the energy to doing it.” –Perry Maughmer     Contact Perry: Website Linkedin FacebookContact Esmie: Linkedin Facebook Instagram Youtube Subscribe & Review in iTunes Did you subscribe to my podcast? On today’s episode of Just the Tips, we have a guest who has been a mentor to me, someone who has been very instrumental in changing my thinking in terms of not just marketing but entrepreneurship in general. Perry Marshall is an accomplished and sought-after business coach who has been featured in Forbes and Inc. He’s also the author of the essential Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords. But today we’re talking with him about the biggest impact he’s made on not just internet marketing, but even NASA: the 80/20 rule for productivity. This is a can’t-miss episode of Just the Tips. How Perry drank the Kool-Aid but didn’t drown in it Perry discovered his love of entrepreneurship not by becoming an entrepreneur, but by becoming an engineer. In high school he got really into repairing and installing stereos and car stereos, and so the entrepreneur side just became the way he could do the thing that he loved. From there he hopped on the Amway train, and as he says drank the Kool-Aid. It took him a while to resurface, but when he did, he realized he wanted to do something on his own. Of course, once he went off on his own he ended up becoming a massive success and a huge influence on countless entrepreneurs, but you’ll have to listen to this week’s Just the Tips to get the whole story. Getting in early on direct-response marketing online Perry got his first job in internet marketing in 1997, before the Internet really took off. But he was able to figure out something that nobody really had up until that point: Direct-response marketing online was not that different from direct-mail marketing and sales, which he had already done. And so he gets a job with this company and starts working on their website and starts generating a healthy number of leads, even at the dawn of the Internet age. And then one night, not too long after he was fired from another job, his boss came over to ask Perry how they could keep him at the company. So Perry figured out something early on, and then grew it from there. So on this week’s Just the Tips you’re getting the best advice from literally a primary source on online marketing. You better understand what you bring to the table as a salesperson Perry tells this great story on this week’s Just the Tips about how he walked into a meeting at his work, and introduced himself as an electrical engineer, and his boss corrected him and said, “No, Perry is in sales, but sometimes forgets what his job is.” And that interaction led to a light bulb going off in Perry’s head. If you don’t know what type of salesperson or marketer you are, then you are going to get shoehorned into a type of marketing by someone else. And that led Perry to create a “Marketing DNA” test, which helps salespeople understand who they are and what their unique selling proposition (UPS) is. 80/20 and gaining leverage Perry’s 80/20 rule says simply that 20% of what you do produces 80% of results (4x leverage), whereas 80% of what you do produces 20% (1/4x), and so the difference is enormous. As Perry says, 80/20 is a very counterintuitive process. What it teaches you is how to understand where you need to put in your effort, and when you need to quit something. Perry dishes all sorts of fascinating stories that illustrate the 80/20 rule on this week’s episode of Just the Tips, even (sssshh) when to fire your customers. Don’t miss it.
