Prayer 2021

Scripture of the Day:    Isaiah 37:14 “Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the Temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord.” The Place of Prayer Where do you pray to the Lord?  Go ahead and answer…I'll wait…. Where do you pray to the Lord?  Some people will say, “In my prayer closet.” Or “In my bedroom” or wherever… But those answers would be wrong. Maybe not wrong wrong, but let's just say INCOMPLETE. What do I mean by that? 1 Thesslonians 5:17, our theme verse for this year, says “Keep praying continually.” That means, at all times, in all situations, in all places. Notice that – at all times, in all situations and in all places. I told the story of Smith Wigglesworth, a mighty man of God, where someone asked him, “How long do you usually pray?”  He responded, “I don't pray more than 10 or 15 minutes.” That amazed the person who asked, but then Smith added, “But I rarely go more than 10 or 15 minutes without praying.”  AMEN! Did you get that? That does not mean that every 10 minutes or so, Smith Wigglesworth would drop to his knees in the middle of the street, blocking traffic and making a spectacle of himself while calling out to God. No. That is not what he meant and that is not the way we are to pray… What Smith Wigglesworth was trying to say, is that he would pray about EVERYTHING!  And he would seek the Lord's guidance in every decision he would make during the day. For example, now, I TRY to do this…but even Brother Bob is still in the developing process…OK.  But, I've gone into my dressing room to get ready to go preach at a church service or conference and I have to choose which suit I should wear. What shirt I should wear with the suit. What color tie to wear.  These are all things that Smith Wigglesworth is referring to.  PRAYING and ASKING for guidance in all things. You may be at the grocery store buying supplies for dinner that night. You went in there with a few things in mind, but then you see something else is on sale. You think, “Hmm. Maybe this would be a better dinner tonight..” What you are really asking is, “Will my family appreciate this for dinner tonight?” Well, what you SHOULD DO, is PRAY in that situation. “God, should I fix this for dinner tonight?” “Brother Bob, come on! God is far too busy answering real prayer requests to bother with what I should fix for dinner…”  Really?  You think God is not interested in what you put inside your body? Do you think God is not interested in what you are putting into the body of your kids?  Or your spouse? If you are like my wife – she take special interest in what goes into my body! Amen! That's why I've lost 65 pounds in the past two years. Glory to God. But if my wife cares that much about me – what makes you think God is not even more interested in what goes into my body! That does not mean you do not make any decisions unless you “hear” from God. Because if that is the case, the devil will try to insert himself into the equation. One way you could do that, using the example of the suit I was using earlier…would be, “God, I think I'll wear the blue suit, with the purple shirt and white tie tonight. What do you think?” And, as I'm starting to prepare those things, my wife may walk in and say, “No, wear the tan shirt tonight.”  If I had not called her into the room, she just “felt the need to walk in at that moment” – can you say that God did not put it on her heart to walk in at that exact moment? That is the type of thing I'm talking about. Amen! But, if you do not get into the habit of asking – then you will never develop the habit of LISTENING for God's answer. Amen! R & B Superstar Macy Gray was our guest on the Noon Hour on WKEi. Macy has recently formed a non-profit that offers financial and other kinds of support to families who have lost someone to police brutality. The MyGood Foundation was formed specifically to help pay for the burial fees and provide counseling services and financial aid to families devastated in the wake of police brutality incident. Much can be lost as people debate what can be done about incidents of police brutality and often lost in that debate are the needs of the families who've lost a loved one. That's what the MyGood Foundation was created for, to make sure the families are not forgotten. We also talked music, of course, with Macy having a new record coming in February and the long lasting legacy of her biggest hit, the Grammy winning "I Try."

Okay, so today's another topic I have wanted to talk about for a long time: namely what do other people represent in our lives. I'm talking about the challenging ones in particular today...you know, the ones that seem to always be pushing the right buttons?! I realised there was a little bit of a pattern here in my own behaviour...I kept attracting the same problems, just through different people. It was only I realised it was my vibe, my mindset, my thoughts and actions that were keeping this pattern stuck...and so I was able to change it! In this episode I share how I TRY(!) to be curious about other people, keep an open mind and be open to learn from anyone. Literally anyone can be a teacher! This is not only more interesting (as you try to figure out why someone's in your life) but also you learn so much about yourself in the process. We had the pleasure of interviewing Anna Sofia over Zoom video! Through a pure perspective only an insider could possess, Anna Sofia chronicles these moments and so much more in her music. The 16-year-old Toronto singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist threads together narrative pop with the scope of a classic nineties teen flick and the unpredictability of 21st century genre-bending. Streamed over 2 million times independently as of 2019 and acclaimed by Ones To Watch, Lyrical Lemonade, and Complex who dubbed her, “a prodigious new talent,”she places listeners in the front row of her world on the introductory 2020 EP, Self Aware Bitch [Electric Feel/Republic Records], and her forthcoming full-length debut.“I write about what’s really happening to me,” she explains. “It’s girl drama, my friends liking guys, something that happened with me and a boy, house parties, and trying to just be myself. I didn’t hear a lot of other artists speaking this way about high school and growing up, so I wanted to tell my story.”She began working towards telling this story as a child. The budding songstress went from competitive dancing since three-years-old to singing at community events, in plays, and around the sleepy ski resort town of Blue Mountain she calls home. At the age of four, she started piano lessons before eventually picking up ukulele and guitar. Inspired by everyone from Queen and Elton John to Tyler, the Creator, Rex Orange County, and Mac DeMarco, she carefully crafted a signature style of her own rooted in traditional instrumentation a la guitar, drums, and bass.“Not all of the songs are love songs,” she says. “I’m writing about school life in a really personal way with authentic-sounding instruments.”In 2019, she began turning heads with the indie releases “Meaner Girl” and “I Try” before landing a deal with Republic Records. Now, she introduces Self Aware Bitch with the single “No Fun.” A shuffling beat and shimmery keys collide with an irresistible chant—“No fun, that’s the only fun I know”—backed by quirky, boisterous horns.“I went to a party, and the song pretty much explains everything that happened that night,” she goes on. “There were kids breaking windows and all of this crazy stuff going down. The story shifts to the next day when you just want to chill at home all super tired.”Meanwhile, “Self Aware Bitch” coasts along on hummable guitar punctuated by nostalgic vignettes of “people kissing in the stairwell,” “texting my momma,” and “lunch line down the block.”It culminates on the chant, “Just call me a self aware bitch, sorry, at least I’m being honest, surrounded by the gossip, at least I say it loud.”“I’m breaking with the trends,” she asserts. “There are so many people who want to change you. I’m not going to change for anyone. It’s about standing by who you are.”In the end, Anna’s story will relate, because she actually lives this…“I hope when people listen to me, they can get confidence in themselves,” she leaves off. “That’s why I’m writing the way I am. It makes me feel confident, and I want to share that.”We want to hear from you! To mark the 20th anniversary of her best-selling debut album, Macy Gray performs her smash hit I Try, and talks frankly to Kirsty about the challenges she faced after achieving fame and success. She also sings from her latest album, Ruby. Tomorrow hundreds of Morris dancers will gather outside the Houses of Parliament to protest against the cancellation of next year's early May bank holiday. Gordon Newton, director of the Rochester Sweeps Festival, explains why this decision has so upset traditional dancers, and the impact it will have on events such as the Jack-in-the-Green in Hastings and others, all over the country. After months of protests Essex county council has dropped plans to close 25 libraries. Instead, the council will now invest £3million into the service to make it “fit for the 21st century”. However plans remain in place to hand some branches over to community groups and the results of a public consultation will be made public tomorrow. To discuss what does make a library fit for the 21st century Kirsty is joined by Liz Miles; writer and Save Our Essex Library campaigner, Tim Coates; Former head of Waterstones bookshops and Councillor Susan Barker, Cabinet Member for Customer, Corporate, Culture and Communities. What is a blues? A genre? Musical form? A scale? It's all of those things and more because the blues is a fundamental musical structure with infinite possibilities for making musical statements. Which I find out here... One Saturday morning, several years ago I wrote a blues for solo piano that didn't really sound like a blues... Or did it? I Try to Write a Blues That Doesn't Really Sound Like A Blues...but only if You've Already Decided What A Blues Sounds Like The thing is this: you say "blues" and it comes with a lot of baggage, good or bad. But can you actually define what a blues is? Blues as A Respite from Blues? So that Saturday Morning Blues gave me the idea that I could write a set of blues that purposely avoided reference to standard blues cliches, even though I love the standard blues cliches, but still stayed more or less in the 12-bar blues form. Why do this? To see what was there, to see what would happen. So listen on. The main track here is that first "New Blues" (as I've come to call them) I wrote that Saturday morning 11 years ago. PART ONE Scott and Paul give a shout-out to their latest Patreon supporter before revealing their respective Top 5 favorite live albums of all time - a topic suggested by Songcraft listener Bob Hunt! PART TWO - 15:17 mark Scott and Paul call up Gary (with a slightly wonky phone connection) to get the lowdown on how a chance meeting at a French castle led to writing more than two dozen songs with a Beatle; why he thinks growing up on show tunes made him a better country writer; how attending the Woodstock festival changed his life; the poignant true story of his father's death that unexpectedly became a hit song; how he accidentally got Faith Hill a record deal; the Tim McGraw hit he wrote that got shelved for 7 years because his publisher hated it; why he says all songs are love songs; and how he went from country hitmaker to collaborating with Carole King, Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx, Desmond Child, and the American Idol team. ABOUT GARY BURR Gary Burr first found songwriting success when Juice Newton scored a Top 10 pop hit with “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me.” The floodgates soon opened on a remarkable string of Top 5 country hits, including “That’s My Job” for Conway Twitty, “Watch Me” for Lorrie Morgan, “Sure Love” for Hal Ketchum, “One Night a Day” for Garth Brooks, “I Try to Think About Elvis” for Patty Loveless, “Till You Love Me” for Reba McEntire, “Can’t Be Really Gone” for Tim McGraw, “To Be Loved By You” for Wynonna, “On the Side of Angels” for LeeAnn Rimes, “Out of My Bones” for Randy Travis, and many others. Burr eventually returned to his early pop success, scoring a hit with “Nobody Wants to Be Lonely,” which Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera took to the top of the Latin charts. Additionally, he wrote Kelly Clarkson’s first hit, “Before Your Love,” which was the best-selling single the year it was released. He also wrote Clay Aiken’s “This is the Night,” which hit #1 the following year. Burr has collaborated with Carole King, both as a songwriter and as a member of her touring band. Similarly, he has worked as a backing musician with Ringo Starr and has co-written more than two dozen songs with Ringo that have appeared on the former Beatle’s albums in recent years. Burr and his wife, singer/songwriter Georgia Middleman, are currently in a band with Kenny Loggins called Blue Sky Riders. In addition to those mentioned, Burr’s songs have been recorded by Neil Diamond, Billy Ray Cyrus, Don Williams, Ricky Skaggs, Faith Hill, Lisa Loeb, Keith Urban, Kenny Rogers, Night Ranger, George Jones, Joe Cocker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lady Antebellum, and others. Gary was twice named Songwriter of the Year by the Nashville Songwriters Association, has been named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Funk D'Void is a DJ and producer who has been at the forefront of the global electronic music scene since the mid-90s. He started Djing at around the tender age of 15, running two under-18 clubs himself – a perfect start to his career. Knowing his vocation to music from an early age after being brought up by his professional pianist mother, Lars never had any doubt as to where his future would lie. House music changed his life, the early Chicago sound specifically, and hearing the certain sounds during his childhood stirred something inside him; the 808 drum machine used on Marvin Gaye's “Sexual Healing” secured his fascination with these electronic sounds – the turning point over to the Detroit techno sound was almost a spiritual moment as it forged his unique sound that would follow over the coming years – visceral, soulful and without compromise. After a string of hits over the years (“Jack Me Off”, “Bad Coffee” “Emotional Content”) plus some killer remixes for the likes of Underworld, New Order and Kevin Saunderson, he is probably best known for the end-of-nighter 'Diabla' which bridged house and techno (and was flogged by everyone from Danny Howells to Sven Vath). And if you look carefully, recently you’ll also spy the name ‘L. Sandberg’ in the liner notes of releases by "newcomer" Francois Dubois, whose “Blood” and “I Try” were huge underground hits of 2006 and 2007 respectively. Much in demand DJ and critically acclaimed producer, his Djing style is everything you expect a true music lover’s taste to be: he is comfortable and adept at moving any dancefloor, the proof being that he is one of the busiest Djs on the circuit today, and has been for the last decade. You only have to ask today’s heroes and legends what they think of the talented Scotsman: “ Amid the sea of average disc jockeys there are a few gems that really do deserve your attention, Lars Sandberg ( Funk D’Void ) is one one of them , consistently breaking new ground and delivering quality, the man is a legend in my house, and should be in yours” NICK WARREN "Lars is phenomenal - an incredibly sound DJ, as well as being one of my favourite producers of the last ten years." DANNY HOWELLS "Moving the dancefloor from the 90's to the 21st century, basements to festivals, Funk D’Void is right up there with the very best. He's provided the soundtrack to nights that have become legend. Always distinctive - grooves with soul that rock it. He lives it, loves it and makes the T-shirt. Vive Le Deep" ANDY CATO (GROOVE ARMADA) "One of the most forward thinking DJ producers of the last ten years. An inspiration to me in the way i think about music, and make it." NIC FANCIULLI “Funk D’Void...quality music all the way.
