Gimme Some Lovin': The Spencer Davis Story

A Breath of Fresh Air

Spencer Davis was a British rock musician and bandleader who became a major figure in the 1960s British Invasion, most notably as the founder of The Spencer Davis Group. Born in Swansea, Wales, Davis began his musical journey at a young age, inspired by American blues, jazz, and skiffle music. After moving to Birmingham to attend university, Davis immersed himself in the city's burgeoning music scene, forming the Rhythm and Blues Quartet in 1963, which quickly evolved into The Spencer Davis Group. The band's classic lineup—featuring Spencer Davis on guitar and vocals, Steve Winwood on keyboards and vocals, Muff Winwood on bass, and Pete York on drums—created a distinctive blend of R&B, blues, and rock. With Steve Winwood's soulful voice at the forefront, the band quickly found success with chart-topping hits like "Keep On Running," "Somebody Help Me," "Gimme Some Lovin'," and "I'm a Man." These tracks became iconic anthems of the era, solidifying their place in British rock history. The Spencer Davis Group was known for its energetic performances and blues-driven sound, and their influence extended across the Atlantic, helping to shape the sound of the British Invasion in the U.S. Davis's keen eye for talent was evident in his discovery of Steve Winwood, whose vocals and keyboard skills were integral to the group's success. While Steve Winwood's presence made the band famous, Davis was the guiding force, handling the management and direction of the group. When Winwood left in 1967 to form Traffic, The Spencer Davis Group underwent changes but continued to release music. Though the post-Winwood years didn't achieve the same level of success, Davis remained an active and passionate musician. He relocated to the U.S. in the late 1970s and became involved in various music projects, including collaborations with other musicians and solo work. He also became an advocate for preserving the legacy of 1960s rock music. Spencer Davis's contributions to rock extended beyond just his band's success. He played a crucial role in bringing American blues and R&B influences into the British mainstream, helping shape the direction of rock music in the 1960s. His ability to bridge these genres created a lasting impact on both sides of the Atlantic. Davis continued performing well into his later years, touring and reuniting with various iterations of The Spencer Davis Group. His career, spanning over six decades, is a testament to his enduring passion for music. Spencer Davis passed away in 2020 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of musicians. His influence on rock music, particularly the fusion of blues and rock, remains a cornerstone of his legacy. As the leader of one of the British Invasion's most iconic bands, Spencer Davis helped to define the sound of an era, and his contributions to music continue to resonate today. This week we're joined by Spencer's friend and bandmate, Ed Tree who is a highly respected American guitarist, producer, and songwriter known for his versatile work across genres like rock, Americana, country, and blues. He gained widespread recognition for his collaboration with British rock icon Spencer Davis, performing as Davis's guitarist and musical partner for many years. Tree's exceptional guitar skills and keen musical sensibilities made him an integral part of Davis's live performances, adding depth to the iconic sound of The Spencer Davis Group in its later iterations. Beyond his work with Spencer, Ed Tree has enjoyed a rich career as a session musician, playing with renowned artists such as Rita Coolidge, Juice Newton, and Al Stewart. He has also produced numerous albums, further solidifying his reputation in the music industry. As a songwriter, Tree has contributed to a wide array of projects, showcasing his talent for crafting songs that resonate across multiple genres. Ed honours his friend Spencer by sharing his story with us.

If you've listened to music, let's say in the last 30 years, then you're likely familiar with my guest today, but not in the way you may think. Gary Burr is a legendary songwriter and vocalist who is behind hit songs for artists like Kelly Clarkson, Kenny Chesney, Lady A, The Oak Ridge Boys, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Juice Newton, Christine Aguilera, Garth Brooks, Lynne Skynrd, Carole King, and Ringo Starr…and seriously…that's the tip of the iceberg here. He's had 14 #1 hits in total (so far), 24 top 10s, and 32 top 40 hits to his name - a master of the 4-minute story arc known as a song.  But, while I could talk to him for years about his songwriting career, I reached out to him about something else — his foray into fiction. On July 5th, 2024, Gary is releasing his first novel called, Reunion - A Rock-n-Roll Fairy Tale and it is his take on the question…"What if?" What if John Lennon wasn't assassinated? Could they ever come together again and play as a band? And, as a reader, can you let your imagination even go there?  I talk to Gary about the process of writing a fairy tale novel. How is it different (or similar) to writing songs? How did he take four of the most famous people in history and script an alternative story? Why tackle someone like the Beatles? Did he know from the outset how it would end? And, most importantly — what does Ringo (who Gary has worked with for the past 20 years) think of this fairy tale? We often think about “what ifs” in our own lives and it is a fascinating idea to explore. Beth Nielsen Chapman is a songwriter's songwriter. She began writing before she had any idea that it could be a career; it was just something that came naturally to her. When she first started out, there was no way to possibly imagine just how important songs would become in her journey - both professionally and personally. Here she talks about that journey, which includes writing songs for Martina McBride, Willie Nelson, Tanya Tucker, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Crystal Gayle, Juice Newton, Bette Midler, and most famously co-writing Faith Hill's hit song “This Kiss”. She has released sixteen albums as a solo artist as well. Along the way, she also talks about processing grief and loss through music (and making music through grief). We spoke only weeks after her second husband, Bob passed away. Her first husband, Ernest, died in 1994. She also tells the stories behind many of her hit songs, and lays out her philosophy of creativity and craft, including what it means to “write from the center of your truth,” channeling humanity's “collective wisdom” and what it means to have “investment without attachment” in songwriting. Beth's most recent album, Crazy Town came out in 2022. www.third-story.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story www.patreon-com/thirdstorypodcast

There was a time when country was very comfortable near the top of the pop charts, and after 1981, you'd be hard pressed country and the pop charts commingling again. "Queen of Hearts" is a perfect example from that era, and it is one of those songs that can lodge right into a young 80s kid's subconcious and then reappear decades later to keep bringing joy. It's a big moment for our podcast: Frank is finally able to say "lover" comfortably and Bill is finally able to describe the "clickity click click clack" that he hears in this tune. *Editor's note: we're pretty sure those are hand-claps, but if Bill and Frank want to call it strumming, so be it. She paints, draws, illustrates children's books, sculpts, photographs and makes this super cool jewelry that's featured on her website, drumjewels.com.  Teri knew she wanted to be a drummer from when she was six, when she created her first drum set to jam with Earth, Wind & Fire. Teri started playing in the drum corps in 7th grade and played through Jr. High and high school that lead her to working professionally as a set drummer starting from age 14. She soon started touring with a family band called The Marcy Brothers, who were signed to Warner Brothers Records and opened for major acts including George Strait, Eddie Rabbit, Johnny Cash, The Oak Ridge Boys, Juice Newton, Roy Clarke.. These experiences led Teri to tour the world with American pop singer, David Cassidy  from 2003-2017 known for acting in the iconic 70's sitcom the Partridge Family as well as his successful solo music career.  In our conversation, Teri offers real gems of wisdom when she says, “to direct your energy and focus… to stay on the best path individually for yourself and getting clear through music, nature and artistic pursuits. Official Hot Country Podcast Website: http://www.hotcountrypodcast.com   Chris McKay interviews Billboard, CMA, ACM, and Grammy award winner Gary Morris. Gary is a singer-songwriter with over 25 charted singles. Gary is also a star of television, movies and the broadway stage.   From WIKIPEDIA -  Although his credits include more than twenty-five other chart singles on the Billboard country charts, "The Wind Beneath My Wings" including five No. 1 hits. He has also released nine studio albums, mostly in the country pop vein, with his 1983 album Why Lady Why having earned a gold certification from the RIAA. "Headed for a Heartache" that song reached No. 8 on the country chart in late 1981. Two follow-up singles Why Lady Why focused more on ballads. One of the album's four singles was "Wind Beneath My Wings,"[1] which showcased Morris' soaring tenor. Written by Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar, the song about heroes — which Morris recorded as a ballad — became one of the earliest hit versions of the song; a better-known version by Bette Midler would top the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989. The Why Lady Why album also featured the ballad "The Love She Found in Me,""Velvet Chains" and the up-tempoed title track as singles; all of them peaked in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Also during this time, Morris recorded a duet with Lynn Anderson called "You're Welcome to Tonight,"  After two more top 10 hits in 1984 — "Between Two Fires" and "Second Hand Heart" — Morris scored his first No. 1 country hit in March 1985 with "Baby Bye Bye." During what was his most prolific hit-making part of his career, Morris had three more solo No. 1 hits during the next two years: "I'll Never Stop Loving You," "100% Chance of Rain" and "Leave Me Lonely." He also recorded a chart-topping duet with Crystal Gayle, "Makin' Up For Lost Time (The Dallas Lovers Song)." Although he rarely saw any success outside country music, many of Morris' hit songs were in the pop-country vein during the height of his career. Morris had two more hits in 1987: the solo "Plain Brown Wrapper" and another duet with Gayle called "Another World." The latter song was used for many years as the theme for the NBC soap opera.[1] After that, Morris' success on the country charts began to fade, as tastes switched once again to neo-traditional country music. Morris later opened a music publishing office in Nashville, with one of his employees being future star Faith Hill. In early 2008, Morris released two gospel albums. His most recent CD is called, Faith and Freedom, dedicated to the military troops. Gary Morris performed two songs featured on Juice Newton's album Duets: Friends & Memories, which was released in October 2010. Morris took a break from touring to pursue a serious acting career. One of his first big roles was in the Broadway production of Les Misérables, as Jean Valjean. The full symphonic recording of Les Misérables is a platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning album and features Morris' vocals throughout in the role of Valjean, including his version of the song "Bring Him Home." Morris has also appeared in a production of Puccini's opera La Boheme with fellow country/pop singer Linda Ronstadt. In the 1980s, he did a stint on The Colbys as blind country music singer Wayne Masterson, signed to Dominique Deveraux's label. On the show, he sang "Try Gettin' Over You" from his Anything Goes release. In the 1990s, he spent a great deal of time working on music projects, such as the PBS special concert production, in Moscow, Russia, in the Tretyakov Gallery. He returned to country music in the 1990s, performing in concerts and as a record producer. Morris hosted and also produced the Nashville network's The North American Sportsman. In 1992, he appeared in an episode of Designing Women as Julia's surgeon. RECENT TEXAN BY THE GRACE OF GOD Gary's new album “Sense of Pride” released on Sept. 14 to all major online retailers including iTunes, Amazon Music, Google Play, Spotify and more. Co-produced by Morris and Michael Bonagura (Baillie & The Boys), the album features nine songs, eight of which are written or co-written by Morris, one song – “The Moment” – was co-written by Kathie Baillie and Michael Bonagura. “Sense of Pride” is Morris' 13th album ````````````````````````````````````````````` https://www.facebook.com/hotcountrypodcast https://www.hotcountrypodcast.com  https://www.facebook.com/OfficialChrisMcKay

The sonic territory covered in the latest RFUS is pretty remarkable, as we could only do with Melanie Shrawder who worked for the Songlines radio promo company for 14 years & prior to that KUT in Austin, TX and WYEP in her native Pittsburgh.  We started out talking Pirates & Steelers & Penguins, went straight into her love of Phil Collins & Genesis, touched on her youthful appreciation of everything from Journey to Juice Newton (bolstered by the Columbia House & BMG Record Clubs). We talked about her tenure booking acts like Spoon & Gary Clark Jr. for their 1st radio sessions, booking Blackalicious for a live session (which they graciously kept FCC clean!), great SXSW memories (including the late, great Rock Hall of Famer Ian McLagan) and then moving on to the promo world, helping the likes of Arcade Fire, The Avett Brothers, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, My Morning Jacket, Chance The Rapper and yes, Spoon, reach bigger national audiences through the radio airwaves.  There of course was mention of her all-time favorite Stevie Wonder, and we talked about the diversity challenges the AAA format faces.  We also discussed our mutual long-term appreciation of Pearl Jam & it all comes full circle with a new PJ side project that features Stone Gossard & acclaimed singer/songwriter Mason Jennings, who spent much of his youth in Pittsburgh.  Plus a couple other new things Melanie has been digging lately at the end (full songs in Anchor version only). And earmuff alert: there is some strong language sprinkled in, but hey it's a podcast!

Opening Monologue. Senator Al Franken, self-described "Giant of the Senate," is accused of sexual harassment by former model Leeann Tweeden. Establishment machinations against Roy Moore are temporarily derailed by the news, which happens to include photographic evidence. Some say Franken has apologized, but we're not so sure. We listen to an emotional interview from Ms. Tweeden and sample some speeches from Franken on the floor of the Senate. Should he resign? How sound are the predictable Establishment defenses of Franken? Meanwhile, we contemplate the heavy duty "Bad Karma" of the Left, which seems intent on stepping on every rake in sight. Unintended consequences of the forces of hate? How many more shall thus bite the dust? Also, we offer an NFL kneeling update with the hot new Neal McCoy song "Take a Knee My Ass." Plus, our tribute to the departed country singer Mel Tillis.
