A devotional on Zephaniah 1:7-9 7 Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord God: for the day of the Lord is at hand: for the Lord hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests. 8 And it shall come to pass in the day of the Lord's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king's children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel. 9 In the same day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit.
SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Here's another Top 5 band – I'm sure typical for people who came of age in the 1980s. Once again, I was introduced to U2 by a good high school friend of mine, and afterwards dug into their back catalog to devour everything I could. Like The Cure, like Joy Division/New Order, like The Jam, like PIL and so many others, U2 was post punk. Lots of definitions & subgenres for this, but for me the post punk I responded to most was rhythmic, ambient, crisp, sparse, melodic, emotional, both organic AND electronic, both pop AND experimental. U2 was another band that showed me what's possible. They had a reverence for what existed in the mid 1970s, and for what came before, but made their own rules about how to interpret all that and make it their own – which they did from the very beginning. It's fascinating to me to see how, even when an artist is not yet fully formed, their earliest incarnations are still “them”. You can 100% hear the uniqueness of their take on music, their personality & quirks. You can hear where they come from, and get a strong sense of where they ended up going. ALL of the later U2 elements are present in their early work – all the elements at the end of the first paragraph above. They would emphasize some & de-emphasize others. They'd get better at some and leave behind others. They'd bring in some new elements here & there. But in general they are still U2, in the same way the Stones are still the Stones. Just like how we're discovering together through my Song for Saturday retro posts that all the elements I have in my music have been present for decades. Life is ever-changing and ever-samey. So cool. When I was in college, my friend Ralph Colombino had a band that almost got signed. They did some originals, and a bunch of covers from the likes of The Who and U2. I co-produced a music night, which also featured me doing an original and a cover on keys – my only proficient instrument at the time other than my voice. Ralph's band played, and in their set was “I Will Follow”, one of my favorite songs from this album, from U2, and all-time. Their drummer did not bring his rug, or anything to keep his kit from sliding across the floor as he pounded the kick. So I volunteered on the spot to sit in front of the kick drum, hands on ears, and make sure they could get through their couple of songs unhindered. THAT's what I'd do for music. U2's influence is all over my work. Here's a song that a friend of mine immediately name checked U2 on, much to my delight: REC - “Little White Lies” - (from the album Distance To Empty) Favorites are: SIDE ONE tracks 1, 3/4 (they run together), 5; and SIDE TWO tracks 1, 3, 5. Christmas is over. The decorations are getting put away, the tree is down, and the carols have stopped. All that I planned for over the last several weeks is done - what now? Well, the mission of Jesus didn't stop at the manger, and the direction and purpose of my life needs to move forward as well. What direction will I go? Today on Real Estate REality Check we have with us someone who less than a decade ago took on a U2 like “I Will Follow” mindset when it came to his passion to make something out of nothing, notwithstanding that at the time, he then possessed the equivalent of the title of an Elvis Costello song called “Less Than Zero” when it came to his base of knowledge in the world of CRE. In spite of those challenges, he went on to build a “value-added tech driven data engine employing sophisticated algorithms and artificial intelligence” that some may describe as a “CRE data democracy.” He did (and I may add, continues to do) so by not only subconsciously embracing the song titles “Harder Better Stronger Faster” by Daft Punk and "It's in the Way That You Use It" by Eric Clapton, but also by heeding the wisdom of, among others, Jeff Bezos and his “Day 1” mindset, so as to minimize the chances of Reonomy meeting up with the business equivalent of the schoolyard bully who wants to take its lunch and give them a metaphorical wedgie, to that of Ben Franklin’s mantra of “Diligence is the mother of good luck,” and W.B. Yeats as well, who said “There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't yet met,” all of which he employed to ultimately co-found Reonomy (which, as a consequence of a networking play date, with props out to an old Grateful Dead tune and his co-founder, because “Mr. Charlie” told him so). I give to you my real estate brethren, from the streets of London, the one language shy of being a polyglot and the man who had the business he co-founded in college become the subject of a 60 Minutes segment, the truly fascinating CEO of Reonomy, my new friend Rich Sarkis.
There are times when we feel really close to God, when we seem to actually sense His presence around us. And there are times when we feel really distant from God as well. It's not that we completely lose our faith, but our connection to God feels routine and mundane and...well...stagnant. What do we do when we feel like our connection to God feels dull? What do we do when we feel stuck with a stagnant faith? ------------------------------------------------ 00:00 Welcome / Prayer 03:01 “I Will Call Upon the Lord” 04:14 “We Will Worship the Lamb of Glory” 05:52 “Faithful Love” 08:40 Communion 13:24 “I Will Follow” 16:20 Sermon 57:20 “Lord, I Need You” 01:00:43 Closing Comments / Prayer 01:03:30 “Restore My Soul”

This is the 6th sermon in our Lenten Series, "I Will." This is also Palm Sunday, so our topic is "I Will Follow." Following Jesus is what we are all about at Euless First United Methodist Church, so, on Palm Sunday, we ask, "If Jesus sent you into town for a colt, would you go?" Following sounds so simple, so straightforward, but most of us don't find actually following Jesus quite that easy. And yet, we refuse to let that stop us.

In 2017, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for her film 13thHer latest film, out now, is the 2018 fantasy film A Wrinkle in Time, which has a mega cast of Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Oprah, and had a budget exceeding $100 million. She is amazing. I hope you love this episode as much as I do.Some of the favourite quotes from the episode:“I didn’t pick up a camera until I was 32 years old.”“I had made 13th and I had made Selma, and that was really dark subject matter, and just to make something about lightness and joy and black girls flying, and designing talking flowers, brought me joy.”“What do we treat each other so poorly? How broken are we?”“I reject the word workaholic. I work all the time but I love what i do, and to not do it would make me less happy.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In episode 74, Brenton and Bryant have a chat with Jon Guerra. With a penchant for thought-provoking lyrics, innovative instrumentation and pleading vocals regularly wrapped around an entrancing, worshipful undercurrent, Jon Guerra is steadily being recognized as one of today’s most gifted, intellectual and groundbreaking singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalists. But just because he’s meeting the world at large with Little Songs(Essential Records) doesn’t mean the Chicagoan (raised in Wheaton, a salt-of-the-earth Midwestern small town) is a newcomer to his craft. While diligently studying Bob Dylan, Rich Mullins, Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright, along with influential poets Emily Dickinson and George Herbert, plus novelist Marilynne Robinson, Guerra essentially spent his entire artistic journey switching between local band and solo life. He’s been courted by mainstream labels, opened for the likes of .fun, and even served as a jingle writer for massive companies like Comcast, Chase Bank and Allstate Insurance. By 2013, the artist of many associations also became a member of Vertical Church Band, the worship band from Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago, where he continues to serve when not on tour. “I was invited to write songs with Vertical Church Band, and I went on one of their writer’s retreats, though I’d never done anything like that before,” recalls Guerra of the eventual road that led to Little Songs. “I’d done faith-based music - not corporate worship in the way we understand it today - but I figured ‘well, I’m here, I want to help and I’ll try my best.’ It was on that trip that I wrote ‘I Will Follow,’ which first came out as a single on my Glass EP last year and is also on Little Songs. My church really took to that song, and I thought, ‘maybe I can do this. Maybe I can write songs in a way that makes sense to me, while being helpful for people in my church.’” Like many of his groundbreaking muses, Guerra brings intelligence, passion and originality to every angle of Little Songs, which shows just as many shades of a timeless troubadour as someone with a truly revolutionary approach to congregational contexts. It’s no wonder he’s attracted a sizable listener base within and without the church community, while becoming a recurring favorite for the folks at Relevant Magazine and its massive audience of those thirsting for spiritual authenticity. “The most personal songs are the most worshipful. For this record, that’s just where it went,” he confirms. “All of these 11 songs are my best effort at being a songwriter, at pleasing God, at giving something that I think is going to be useful to my friends and family in their journey of faith, and something that will be useful to churches on a Sunday morning as they’re trying to engage with God as a faith community.” Continues Guerra: “For me, art is hewn from my heart, from my personal experience and what happens in those moments of solitude. Every song is written from a very private place, and then it’s also consumed in a very private place, generally speaking. People have their headphones in, people are in their cars and it’s like deep calls to deep in that regard. Some of these songs are written in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. Some of them are written with very dear friends when we’re talking about something and we feel like a song needs to be sung about that subject in a way it hasn’t been before.” While Little Songs is replete with examples, perhaps the lead single “Nothing Better” is an ideal place to start. Listeners are sure to marvel at Guerra’s vocal gymnastics spanning several different octaves, his unexpected yet suave blend of acoustics and synths, plus plenty of deliciously catchy hooks. “Pop music so beautifully captures a moment. ‘Nothing Better’ speaks of those very acute moments when we experience the love of God with complete liberation and freedom. The song is meant to capture the joy and exuberance that comes in those moments.” More than any other track on the ambitious album, the ethereal and delicate “Every Little Song” seems to best summarize Guerra’s visions for the collection and it’s clearly no coincidence to find it ranking amongst his personal favorites. “It completely encapsulates everything that I think this record ought to be about. There’s no consistent theme or concept, but every song is an offering and every song is an attempt at writing faith-based material in a way that stays true to the faith and true to my sense of art. And I just love singing it. It’s a fun finger-picking pattern, and I love the melody.” Thus far, everyone from capacity crowds in cozy clubs to arena-sized audiences on The Rock & Worship Roadshow (alongside Crowder, Matt Maher and more) are agreeing wholeheartedly as Guerra previews Little Songs, which is slated for national release in April. And that’s only the beginning of what’s sure to be a fruitful touring cycle that also includes a summer stretch with fellow Roadshow alum/label mate Maher. However, no matter what the platform, the tunesmith simply seeks to enlighten both Christ followers and seekers alike with creativity and spiritual connectivity at every turn. “My general goal is the ministry of art, if that’s possible,” Guerra lets out with a little laugh. “For a long time, art and ministry have been at odds, but I don’t think that needs to be the case. I think artists can love their neighbor as they love themselves, while keeping their finger on the pulse of what makes a good song and what makes good art. Hopefully I can say beautiful things, sing beautifully and then let the beauty do its work.” Find out more about Jon at www.jonguerramusic.com ⏪ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Growing up in rural Nebraska tends to make one’s musical interest lean a certain way. But even at a young age, Byron knew there was more to music than what he heard on the local country western radio stations. It was in junior high that Byron DJ’d his first dance with his cousin. Even then his eclectic taste in music came out (Star Wars Theme by Meco anyone?). After moving to San Francisco, Byron stated taking in the sights and sounds of such parties as MASS and CLUB UNIVERSE, all having a huge impact on him. Byron has developed the philosophy of keep the crowd moving and make sure they leave with a smile. His mix of equal parts upbeat house, anthems, and progressive sounds (with a splash of disco and trance) has earned him a faithful following. "If you don’t leave with a smile on your face and maybe a little sweaty, I haven’t done my job.” There is nothing better than leaving a club thinking “that was fun!” Byron wants you to think that same way. “Just come in, dance your ass off for a few hours and have a memorable time. Drop off your worries at the door. They'll be waiting for you when you leave. Until then, you belong to me!” ----- Track Listings: 1. Life Saviour - Green Children (7th Heaven Club Mix) 2.
