Today's show is the second in a mini-series on the changing face of business. On Friday's show we talked about how Google is keeping search traffic on the Google platform and is not sending organic search results to the source pages in the way it used to. Traffic to businesses is dramatically reduced. This will cause many businesses who relied largely upon organic search to either adapt to whatever will replace organic search, or they will face bankruptcy. This is also going to affect every aspect of retail. So much has been written about the retail apocalypse. There is no question that the footprint of traditional retail is changing. There is much less diversity in shopping experience today than when I was a teenager. In the US we had numerous department store chains including Bloomingdales, Macy's Sears, Kmart, Bergdorf Goodman, Filenes, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, JC Penny, Walmart Target Montgomery Ward, Ames, and countless others. Today, only a small fraction of those remain. We are all familiar with the e-commerce revolution and how Amazon and Walmart are increasingly dominating this space. Even major retailers including Home Depot and Best Buy have a larger online catalog with products that are only a couple of days away from your home. But the new revolution is in a form of shopping called social shopping. This has been in existence in China for more than 8 years and is still in experimental stages in the US on a limited basis with specific platforms. So what is social shopping? It is a method of e-commerce that integrates the social aspects of human interaction into the online shopping experience. It leverages social media platforms and online communities to facilitate the discovery, research, sharing, and purchasing of products and services. Think influencers. Today I would like to discuss the level of furniture that can be found in shops and department stores. It is a sensitive issue that is rarely brought up in public but remains a hot subject in the architecture and design communities. I have heard people describe it as ordinary, mediocre, poorly made, and less inspiring and innovative than it has been at any other time in history. It should not be forgotten that furniture design has always had a tremendous impact on the taste of the time.In the 20th century, manufacturers were motivated in producing avant-garde furniture, and this why it became available to consumers. The Primavera department store in Paris, for example, was the source for high end Art Deco furnishings in the 1920s. American department stores Macy's, Lord & Taylor, and Abraham Strauss offered the American public the most up to date and daring furniture available. During the mid-century years, it was Herman Miller and Knoll that were famously investing and responsible for the some of the iconic furniture of the century. The Japanese department store Takashimaya was the source for art furniture in the 1950s, and it is particularly memorable for the benchmark exhibition of French design curated by Charlotte Perriand. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was Bloomingdales that became the lead tastemaker by exhibiting chic, fantastical space age furniture, brilliantly curated.What really happened to furniture design and why the best of it is found only in galleries and museums, but not in shops?For this discussion I invited Sami Reiss. This week the Food and Beverage Stylist Chriscilla Browning. Chriscilla has blended her love of photography with a creative palette of culinary art establishing herself as a leading visionary in the designing and crafting of visual delights for advertising and editorial stages where beauty stimulates the senses with mouth watering creations. Chriscilla was born in Waynesboro, Virginia in 1973, the eldest of three girls, to Glenna Lyle, a homemaker and latterly a rural mail carrier, and David Miller, US Navy veteran turned electrician, safety inspector and explosives expert. Chriscilla grew up on the family farm where rural life grounded her while she developed an interest in fashion and illustrating. She was also an athlete in High School proving herself as a runner. Her interest in the finer art of photography took her to the American College in Atlanta from which she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts in 1994. After a period of waiting tables and bars, Chriscilla found work in a photographer's studio in Atlanta where she learned the tricks of the trade in styling food and dishes, and even beds for Bloomingdales. It was during this time that she met her husband and took a break in her career to have Skyler, the first of her two sons. Chriscilla has since built a lucrative business in food and beverage styling that leaves her little time for herself beyond exercising, which these days focuses on weight lifting. For New Yorkers, C.O. Bigelow is an institution. “There's something about the [Bigelow] apothecary that emotionally appeals to people,” Ian Ginsberg, president, pharmacist and third generation owner of C.O. Bigelow, told Glossy. “Everybody, no matter how young or old you are, has some memory about going to the apothecary and the pharmacist telling you what to do. That's where I started [when I joined the family business four decades ago]. I started focusing on what happens when you walk in the door.” Opened in 1838, C.O. Bigelow is a mainstay in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City and touted as the city's oldest apothecary. To wit: The original Kiehl's apothecary opened 14 years later in 1851. C.O. Bigelow is known as a go-to for well-heeled New Yorkers, NYU students, tourists and neighborhood locals. Its lore includes customers like Sarah Jessica Parker and the late Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, who purchased her iconic headbands in the shop, according to C.O. Bigelow. “It's not always about what you buy, it's about how you feel when you're there,” said Ginsberg. “I always say we have to be in the want business, not the need business. The minute we're in the need business, we're dead.” His family has built more than a pharmacy and retail. The company also has an eponymous beauty brand made in partnership with Bath & Body Works, formerly Limited Brands. The products range from makeup to body care and currently sell in the Greenwich store as well as through Bath & Body Works, Bloomingdale's and Revolve, among other retailers. The company also sells its wares direct to consumers. They include the namesake beauty line and the diverse curation found in store. Its stores offers luxury brands like Westman Atelier and Augustinus Bader, prestige offerings from RMS Beauty and Caudalie, and masstige products like Avene and Bioderma. “You can't just put stuff on shelves anymore,” Ginsberg said. “Anybody can find unique things and put them on shelves, but it's about making people feel good -- that's more important now than ever before. People talk about experiential retail, but our experimental retail is just person-to-person communication, helping people, explaining things to them and answering questions and showing them how to use things in whatever category it is. That's the secret sauce.” The company also owns a distribution company called Bigelow Trading that imports and distributes small brands into the U.S., for its own retail and others. Marvis toothpaste is among those brands. In addition, Bigelow Trading has a thriving hotel amenities business that works across hospitality brands like Aman, Nobu Hotel and Soho Grand Hotel, among others. But perhaps the most surprising thing about C.O. Bigelow is the role of the pharmacy in the overall business. “People sometimes say to me, ‘You have this great beauty business because you have this strong pharmacy business,” Ginsberg said. “But they have it all wrong. [The pharmacy business is supported by the beauty business].” As previously reported by Glossy, 2024 was a bad year for American drugstores, and 2025 could end up even worse. Just last year, CVS closed 586 locations, Rite Aid closed 408 stores, and Walgreens closed 259 locations, which has created “drugstore deserts” across the U.S. As a pharmacist and third-generation pharmacy owner, Ginsberg also shared his perspective on a buzzy topic in the industry: pharmacy benefit managers, which act as middlemen between drug companies and consumers. PBMs are currently under investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for alleged pricing abuse, according to reporting by Reuters in January, Paired with razor-sharp drug margins, pharmacist staffing shortages and more issues native to pharmacies, the industry is struggling. Ginsberg joined the Glossy Beauty Podcast to discuss the company's secret sauce behind its thriving brick-and-mortar business and the role beauty retails plays in it.

The largest remaining tenant in San Francisco's largest mall just called it quits. Bloomingdale's which is owned by Macy's announce it will be closing its doors in March. The store, which occupies 330,000 square feet in the beleaguered San Francisco Centre, is slated to close at the end of March. Bloomingdale's is by far the mall's largest remaining tenant, and it is closing the brand's second-biggest store after its New York flagship... Bloomingdale's, which opened in 2006 in the former Westfield mall, is the second anchor tenant to bail on the 1.5 million-square-foot property at Fifth and Market streets. Nordstrom's flagship store closed in 2023 after 35 years in business... The closure of Bloomingdale's deals another setback to the struggling San Francisco Centre mall, which is about half vacant after an exodus of retailers since the pandemic.
