The (New) Joy of Gaming Podcast - Episode Twenty-Eight Xbox's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week - Redfall Impressions, Phil Spencer Interview, CMA Blocks Acquisition & More On this episode of The (New) Joy of Gaming Podcast, we discuss the biggest news story in gaming: Xbox's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps by Moon Studios continues the adventure begun with the beloved Ori and the Blind Forest. Will of the Wisps takes Ori on an emotional journey as he searches for his new friend, Ku. Gareth Coker, who also scored Blind Forest , told me that writing the score for Will of the Wisps gave him plenty of fresh ideas because of all of the new characters in the game. Gareth was part of development of Will of the Wisps since the game's beginning, which gave him plenty of time to finetune themes for each of the new characters. Gareth worked with some outstanding musicians, including Kristin Naigus, who plays 21 different wind instruments on the score, and vocalist Aeralie Brighton, whose voice was so memorable in Ori and the Blind Forest. The digital release of Gareth's soundtrack is over three hours long, and follows the story arc of the game. A vinyl release by IAM8Bit is planned as well, and because LPs hold fewer minutes of music, Gareth describes it as "composer's

In a show that was blissfully recorded in a time before all mass gatherings were cancelled for several months, we talk a lot about the impact of COVID-19 on gaming and sporting events, not realizing that just about everything would be canceled mid-week. Keep that in mind when listening! At the time of recording, E3 was still moving ahead with their June show. (Spoiler alert: this changed several days later!) However, they were working without one of their main partners for the rebrand of the show. The indie game The Long Dark was pulled from NVIDIA GeForce NOW, and the developer gave some insight as to why, which calls into question the role virtual machines play in gaming. Then we talk about the Final Fantasy VII Remake Demo, and what our favorite PS2 game and first DVD played on the PS2 were. Wash your hands.

C Andrew Rohrmann (aka SCNTFC) is a composer and sound designer based in Seattle, Washington. Starting his career writing music for advertising, he shortly moved into other forms of media; from television to film, and from film to video games. His work for TV and film include: "Wildlife Detectives" and "The Call of The Wolfman," while his music for video games include titles such as: Virtual Virtual Reality, Oxenfree, Peggle 2 and Mr. Robot: Exfiltration. One of his more recent video game projects is OLD MAN'S JOURNEY developed by Broken Rules based in Vienna, Austria.Old Man's Journey is a soul-searching adventure, tells a story of life, loss, and hope. Entrenched in a beautifully sunkissed and handcrafted world, the player embarks on a heartfelt journey interwoven with lighthearted and pressure-free puzzle solving. A visual narrative about life's precious moments, broken dreams, and changed plans, you uncover stories of the old man's life told through beautiful vignettes of his memories. The game was released in May of 2017 and is available for iOS devices, Android, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 and Steam. In this episode, serving as both composer and sound designer, SCNTFC talks about how he came to score this project, how he wanted to blur the lines between diegetic and non-diegetic music and sound, why he chose to record himself on instruments he wasn't the most proficient at playing. And how his music not only follows the titular old man, but ends up propelling him forward through the game's story.ANNOTATED TRACKS AND SEGMENTS03:03- How SCNTFC was hired for Old Man's Journey04:34- "Oceanside" - the music of the journey11:31 "Two Towers, Stonewall, The Bridge"OTHER TRACKS00:07 - "Carry Me Far"SOUNDTRACKThe original soundtrack was released on May 17, 2017.
